I've got a strange sound coming from the front axle. I want to rule out/in that it may be my auto lock hubs. Can I slide the hubs out and drive around? I dont see any problem I won't be offroad, just some miles to test it.
View 1 RepliesMy father in law has an 04 EX with the 5.4. It has a weird sound coming from the front passenger side. He listened to the jiffy lube kid who told him it was the brakes. I pulled one side completely apart tonight and the brakes are fine. We took it for a drive so I could hear the noise. It is coming from the passenger side up front. It is intermittent.
Doesn't matter if we hit a bump or pot hole. It sounds like a cat being run over. It will either last for a few seconds or just really quick. I crawled underneath and could not find anything loose. The first time I heard it I thought it was a shock. But the second time it was way too long to be a shock. And they are only a year old.
Secondly, it has a cat, and two mufflers..... Is this normal?
I am having a whistling noise coming from my front axle... It only happens when the hubs are locked and in 4WD when hubs are unlocked and in 4wd there is no whistling noise... I know they are vacuum operated for the auto hubs... We just got a good snow fall the past few days and have had to have the lockers locked to stay straight... Also can I keep the hubs locked and cruise and 55 to 60 mph ? or is it not good for the locking hubs...
View 2 RepliesI have had a Clicking noise on my 2000 x 4x4 since 6 months coming from the front right side tire noticeable over rough roads or over bumps and I went on a journey starting with ford dealer to almost all well recognized service centers and every body says your front suspension is ok and no one seems to know where it is coming from. I thought it was my hub bearing since it fails almost every year but when I was changing the bearing, I noticed a big Excessive play in axle.

Also I noticed oil mixed with grease the grease is prawny with a reddish sort of color or that is some thing else.

Any way after replacing the hub Bearing with a used one and butting every thing together I went on a test drive. Noticed that the vehicle drive line is not right the car seems to wonder and the noise still there so i didn't get far i came right back and park my x then a funny burned oil smell was present.
Is it some thing i did wrong or is it bad situation gone worst ?

Curious, how does the 4x4 engage in the new F-150's? When I put the truck in 4WD I can here the click sound coming from the front axle, where as it comes from the t-case on my Ranger. Just wondering how it's set-up.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2004 F150, 5.4L V8. A few years back I was in an accident when someone slammed into the front of my truck. The right front wheel & tire took the brunt of the accident. I thought the repair shop had everything back to normal until recently I occasionally have a grinding sound coming from the right front side, seems to be related to the axle. It doesn't do it all the time just at random while I'm driving. The only solution I can find is to pull over or slow my speed to a crawl. Once I slow down enough or turn my wheel one way or the other its like something SLAMS back into place. I had it looked at by a local mechanic and they couldn't find anything wrong. Could it be something in my right front axle?
View 7 RepliesI have 1999 F350 7.3 Crew Cab 4WD. I took it on a 4 hours trip towing a trailer to haul a small tractor on it. after 3 hours of driving, I started hearing grinding and metal chewing sound coming from the front axle or close the wheel hubs. It was awful, terrible, ... you name it!!! I had to continue or I will lose the tractor I paid for already. The sound was coming for 1-2 seconds each 500 feet or so. It never stopped or changed. I pulled over to see what's going on and found the following:
1. Left shock is leaking badly
2. Right locking hub is gone (not sure if the truck had one before). I bought this truck last year, but I never had to use 4x4 and I know the 4x4 motor by the transfer case is missing and the nipple on the transfer case is set to the 2wd position so the front drive-shaft does not turn.
I took the front shock off and continued to drive without it, the noise did not go away.
I pulled over again and this time I noticed that the dust cover on each end of the front axle is missing too. I have never worked on these axles before, but I jacked one side, and sure enough, gear oil was leaking from the other side. I took the plug off the front differential and stuck my finger in it. I felt a creamy brown-greenish stuff in the differential. The consistency is like mayonnaise or thin peanut butter. I put the plug back on and went to pick up the tractor because I did not want to miss it fooling around with the truck on the highway.
The truck made it there and back (almost 5 hours total after the break down). The sound never stopped every 500 to 1000 ft.
After getting home safely, I took the other locking hub off, and took it for a test drive. I did not hear the noise, but now my right brakes are locking.
I took of the wheels and saw that the retaining snap ring (C clip) for the front axle on the right side came off by hand. I took the washers behind it off. Took the calipers and brackets off. I have never done front axle rebuild. I am not sure what has been damaged and what's still good.
Right of the bat, I know, at least, I need 2 shocks, one brake caliper and pads.
My questions are:
1. Is it possible to take the front axles off on both sides and make it 2wd for now until I have the money to rebuild the axle?
2. Could I use the same hubs? or they are most likely damaged and how to tell?
3. How to tell if the differential is damaged/needs rebuilding?
4. How to tell if the axles/spindles are damaged?
5. Is there a step by step tutorial to rebuild the axle with all seals, bearings, ...etc? How hard is the job for a hobbyist? I do most of my repairs myself, and I was lucky at 36 years old, I never had to rebuild a differential.
6. What else I might have damaged in the process of driving it that long with the noise? How do I tell if I did?
We've noticed an audible knocking that sounds to be coming from the front drivers side. It only happens at speed (over 30) and doesn't seem to be engine related. I can feel it under my resting foot while driving. I know this is vague but I think it may be enough to get started on figuring this out.
View 14 RepliesSo , on my 2002 Ex 4x4 v10 I have a creaking noise coming from what sounds like under the front passenger floor board. My mother said she actually could feel a vibration in the floor when it made the sound today going to lunch. I cannot feel it on my side or the steering wheel. It is intermittent at various speeds and not any more or less prevalent when turning either direction.
Does not seem to interfere in anyway with steering or handling, just driving me nuts. Truck just had new brakes, rotors, and tires installed. Vehicle is new to me, picked it up yesterday. Did not notice it on test drive or 60 mile ride home, but now that I am aware of it , it is driving me nuts. Headed on a long 2 week trip this weekend.
Noticed some spotting in front of the house, and saw some leaking coming from the driver side near the axle. I'm guessing it's the axle seal leaking. I recently switched in to 4x4 about a week ago, shortly after that I noticed the leak. I have a trip to San Antonio coming up in the middle of Feb, about a 650 mile round trip. Can I continue with the plans and get it fixed afterwards?
View 2 RepliesI had the rear axle seals replaced less than 1000 miles ago. Now the axle is getting whiny. First I thought maybe that the tires made noise but now I'm pretty convinced it comes from the axle.
With a seal replacement, what do they do that might impact the axle - over tighten the bearings?
I also had the rear diff fluid replaced - perhaps they put in the wrong stuff...
Should I replace fluid and see if that stops or should I simply take it to the dealer and let them deal with it?
its a 2000 limited 4x4, must have been in the snow a lot because it was from up north and is pretty rusty on the underside. my dad and i have tried everything to get these caps off but nothing will work. lots of pb blaster, hammering, even cutting the one of the four joints and trying to wedge something from the inside. If we cant get it could a shop do it? and how much might they charge?
View 9 RepliesWell the old ball ball joints are out, new ones are in and now I'm working on removing gear assembly so I can change the inner axle seals. I've been trying to get it out. It haven't had much luck. I've loosened the cap bolts, prayed, pulled, hit, and still no luck. The only thing I've been successful at is screwing up the first few threads of the bolt holes for the passenger side cap. Tomorrow I'll be getting a tap and chasing the threads to clean them up. Hope I haven't screwed it up too bad. How to get the gear assembly out?

View 2 RepliesI fit yesterday my ProComp Leaf Springs 22415 in the back of my Ex. It took about 3hours with a couple of beers to get the work done. Are those springs huge and heavy.
I will change the front springs in about 2 weeks, but we figured out, that we will need there 4 longer Semi-rounded U-Bolts, because the leaf package is about an 1/2-3/4 inch thicker than the OEM-springs. My OEM are a 2Leaf Springs and those ProComps 22410 are 5 Leafs.
I have an 04 Limited, 6.0 PSD, 4x4 which I need to replace the front inner axle seals, the right side is leaking out the shaft. I have watched a couple of YouTube videos on how it is done but would like to get some first hand knowledge and recommendations.
First, how important is it to check the backlash before beginning the removal of the gear assembly? Do I need to remove the pinion gear as well or just the gear assembly?
How difficult is it to get everything back on place once the seals are replaced? I have not done this type of repair before and am concerned I might miss something.
I am planning to replace all the ball joints at this time also, this was the primary reason for this maintenance in the first place.
I have noticed a few drips coming from the rear axle input shaft where the drive shaft connects. It has only done it once and there is no residue on the trailer hitch so I know it didn't dump everything on the road. If change this seal, how difficult is it and do you have any information which might make it easier.

View 2 RepliesIts been awhile since I have been on. Everything has been running great for me until I found my passenger side front axle leaking fluid. I'm sure something has been posted on here but I have limited access to internet right now and need to know what I am getting into to change the seals. From what I have found there is an inner seal in the pumpkin and then an outer seal and dust cover. Are both of these easy to change? Are there any special tools needed? Do I need to remove the gears in the pumpkin? If so, is this difficult and any special tools required for this?
Mine is a 2001 V10-6.8, 4x4 no mods at this point.
I have a 2000 ford excursion limited when i drive a loud clunking noise comes from the front end, so i pulled the front passenger tire off and realized what looks like the axle bearing behind the hub assembly is rattling around. What part is that. I am going to post a picture tomorrow in the day light.

Btw: it's a 1996 Aerostar 3.0L
