I have been on 1800 mg a day of gabapentin for about 9 months due to a back problem. In this time I have put on over 2 stone and have now got the point where I've had enough. I went to my doctor on Tuesday and she has advised me to reduce my daily amount by 300 mg and then after a week, reduce by a further 300mg. This seems a lot quicker than others have done it although I'm desperate to get off these asap.
View 19 RepliesAfter 3 years of taking this medication I am ready to come off. My doctor told me not to stop cold turkey due to seizure risk. And sounds like he think I could do it in a week's time.
Hoping someone here has had some experience with coming off of this medication. It truly helped before my surgery this summer.
I don't love the side effects.
been taking this medication since September 2011 as i was having back surgery in the December.. looking back on it all now i have been severely depressed but haven't realised until now... i want to come off them without a visit to my doctor & was wondering if anyone knows the safest way to do this
View 6 RepliesI have only been taking it for less than 3 weeks and only managed to get to 300mg a day but the side effects are awful. I have now found out what is causing my nerve pain in back and leg ( my L5S1 disc has collapsed trapping nerves) and GP says that I would need a very high dose of gabapentin to ease this nerve pain so I might as well come off it ( waiting to see neurosurgeon). Today I dropped down to 200mg ( 100mg morning and then I was going to take other one before bed). I would normally have taken another one at 5pm. This evening I have had a bad headache around my eyes. like shooting pains. I have now taken the second 100mg tablet to see if this stops the pains.
My Gp said " oh you can just stop taking it after such a short time" but I said I have read it gives back withdrawal if stopped suddenly and he didn't disagree!
So could the headache be withdrawal?
After no advice from GP I was thinking of dropping to 200mg a day for a week then 100mg a day for a week then 100mg every other day until I stop - does this sound good?
I have been taking 15mg of mirtazapine for 6 months for sleep problems and anxiety.
It has helped me sleep and feel more relaxed. But have struggled with word retrieval and foggy head. I decided to come off it and have been on 7.5 mg for 4 weeks, I have been doing ok but the last three days have had problems sleep waking after 3 hours and my anxiety feels like it coming back! Is this just withdrawal or am I going back my old ways?
Can anyone advise me? I had my first PS op last June '09. I am still experiencing pain when sitting for any length of time - whether in office for the day - or on car journey. I have not had recurrence of actual opening of the wound itself (altho it took a long time to close) and no abscess' - but the discomfort frightens me that it could be coming back! My GP tells me to wait and see for a while!
View 2 RepliesI have been taking 1800mg of Gabapentin (600 3 times daily) for less than a year now to help with my nerve pain. It was working well however in the last few weeks, I have noticed that shooting pains and the pins needles sensations have started to return. Is it possible I've built up a tolerance to gabapentin? I wanted to check in here first before going to my Dr to see if anyone else had had the same experience.
View 4 RepliesI have been dealing with angina for a year now and it has been controlled with medication called Ranexa, but over the past three weeks my systems have came back and they are severe and more often! I have to keep nitro with me at all times now cause I am have at least four to five attacks a day. I am scared to drive due to this. There has been no change in my medication so I do not understand what's going on. I contacted my heart dr and all he said was I needed to exercise more. I mean I get that and I'm not a lot over weight but I could lose five to ten pounds. So does anyone have any suggestions? I'm afraid I'm going to die of a heart attack cause the pain is going down my arm and now sometimes up my neck and jaw!
View 1 RepliesAbout 2 week's ago I took 2 perc within a night and the next day I got sick, I thought from the pills, but than I was nauseous and have been for the most part ever since. My left side mid to lower back started hurting approx a week ago and it's gotten much worse last night and now I'm having pain in my upper right abdomen as if the pain moved. I'm on muscle relaxers for my back already but it's not affecting/helping my new pain though and the new pain doesn't feel the same. I was just curious if anyone had any idea what it might be, some say kidneys but does that pain or can it move from my back to my abdomen?

View 1 RepliesTwo days ago I was in the gym exercising my shoulders and whilst I was lifting weights, I moved my back whilst seated and I heard a 'click' sound in my back, followed by pain in that area of my lower middle back. I immediately stopped exercising and haven't gone to the gym since.
I don't know what I was thinking by moving my back like that, but since it happened there is a lot less pain and it feels like the pain may be totally gone in the next 48-72 hours hopefully.
On the night of the injury I found it hard to turn onto my side when in bed, but now I can do it without any problems. Now I can only feel some pain when I turn my upper body to the left or right or if I try to stretch my lower back.
Would anyone be able to give me some advice such as what type of injury I have or whether this may have a long term effect? Is it a very positive sign that the pain is decreasing each day?

I was doing a yoga pose (a torso twist hold which is where you lay on your back bring both legs up in the air then bring them down with your knees/legs tucked and torso twisted on opposite side) when I accidently dropped mid twist too quickly and hurt my lower back, the pain on a scale of 1-10 is about a 2-3, so a dull aching. Its localized and does not radiate down my thighs/legs or up to my neck. There's no shooting/stabbing pains and It also doesn't burn, or tingle (numbness). Could this be just a stretched/sprained back issue or a pinched nerve?. It also isn't tender to the touch at all.

but suddenly 20 days back i got back pain after my routine exercises and my MRI report says following:
1. L4-L5 disc reveals minimal diffuse bulge abutting the thecal sac without any nerve root compression.
2. B/L mild facet arthropathy is seen at L4/L5 and L3/L4 levels with tiny anterior paradiscal osteophytes at these level.
3. L5 vertebra us sacralised with rudimentary L5-S1 disc.
I was diagnosed with hypo this past november but i started feeling sick in september of 2011 when i was 17, im 19 now and my life has changed drastically due to this! My hair was falling out at a rapid rate, i was gaining weight even though i barely eat and had some really bad mood swings! Went to the doc and prescribed me levothyroxine 50mg it has been 9months since im on this medication, my levels are back to normal but i still feel as though nothing has changed, my hair is falling out i'm almost bald, its really hard to lose weight and according to my mom i have become unbearable! How long does it take to see actual progress with levothyroxine? does your hair grow back at all? will i ever feel better? i just want my life back :'( I had take a year off university because of this and i need to know if anything is gonna change! I'm sorry for the long note i'm just fed up and frustrated, thank you for your time i really appreciate it :D
View 5 RepliesI am 29 and Female. I have been under a great deal of stress lately. I have been having some minor health problems that cause my mind to go to that dark place. I am having very irregular periods and GERD/Gallbladder issues. Also, I am planning a wedding and my mother was just diagnosed with Lung cancer about 2 weeks ago.
My upper back across the "meaty" part of my shoulders has been so tight and painful. If my fiance rubs them, he finds all kinds of trigger points that are so painful to the touch I can't breathe. In the middle of my upper back I feel a sharp pain sometimes. My neck muscles are tight as well as the tops of my arms down to my elbows. On occasion my fingers tingle.
As of the past 2 days I feel a pressure on my chest right below my collar bone. If I yawn I can feel my throat muscles get sore. The very top of my sternum is tender to the touch. It almost feels bruised.
I did a little bit of research and it seems that all of these problems are connected. The scalene muscle group can cause all of these problems. I am going to see a massage therapist on thursday. Hopefully I get some relief.
Another bit of info, I have a desk job. I am at a computer for 10 hours a day. I work 60 + hours a week. I had a chest CT scan with contrast in July and it came back clear. ( unrelated incident ) So I believe I can rule out anything major. The scan is only 3 months old.
My question is; has anyone else experienced this? If so, what did you do to ease your symptoms? I have tried muscle rub so far. Doesn't help much...I am going to ice the areas today and see if that helps.
I have a pain in between my diaphragm which leads through to my upper back, I have had for approximately 3 months but getting worse, if I lie on my stomach it hurts in both front and back. I have read all sorts of things that it might be from hernia to liver/kidney problem and gallstones... I did have a small incident where I strained myself trying to hold a motorbike up from falling down and I guess I have had the problem from then on, if I stretch out sometimes I will hear a click which radiates from the front to the back, if I push in my diaphragm it hurts. I live in a third world country so and worried about going to doctor.

I am experiencing some symptoms I would if I were to be pregnant but I'm not sure if it's a side effect or what my chances are getting pregnant back to back packages. I do have nuvaring in place right now.
View 1 RepliesI've had horrible back pain for over a year now due to a herniated disc at L5/S1 and a bulge at L4/L5. It's gotten better at various times during the interim, but I've never been able to bodybuilder/workout again. I usually do not have sciatica (only severe back pain) but every time I re-aggravate it I do get sciatica that shoots into my right heel. I visited my neurosurgeon and he told me he does not think I would be a candidate for a microdiscectomy because my primary symptom is not sciatica - but I want some second opinions. Did a microdiscectomy help your back pain from the herniation and not just the sciatica?
View 8 RepliesIn March I started taking my birth control again after being off of it for two months. I was going on vacation in April and I didn't want to be on my period. So, I started my next birth control pack during the placebo week of April which started March 30th to avoid getting my period that week. I still ended up getting my period anyway. Well my placebo week for the second pack was the week of April 20th I never got my period and the week of April 27th was technically suppose to be the real week I got my period since my period never skipped with me taking my birth control pack back to back and it still hasn't shown. Is it possible it hasn't shown because of me taking my birth control packs back to back has thrown it off?
As of now I am still taking my birth control like normal. I started my third pack the week of April 27th.
Also, I am not pregnant because even with me still being on birth control I always use condoms. So, no worry about that.
I'm 18 and i was diagnosed with scoliosis at a young age. I wore a brace to correct the curvature for about 2-3 years. The brace would put pressure on my hips and after some time I would have pain in my lower back, down my buttocks, down the back of
the leg and into the toes. It's sharp and searing and sometimes there's tingling and numbness. Could this be sciatica caused by the brace? Is it possible that it pinched the nerves and caused permanent damage? All I know is that it is extremely painful and hard to get to go away..
