Lumbar Puncture :: Coital Headache For Weeks

Mar 23, 2014

At the end of January I suffered a severe coital headache. For the two weeks after the coital headache I was experiencing a nasty numbing headache and eventually ended up in the hospital. I had a CT done which came back showing no bleed on the brain. I had 2 LP's as they screwed the first one up! I was also not told to lay flat for 24 hours or drink caffeine, terrible! The LP results were clear, a few days later I had a terrible post LP headache, it's now late march and I STILL have the headaches! At the end of February I saw a specialist who performed a CT angiogram to check again for an aneurysm, which was clear! I was told to wait for a couple of weeks to see if the headaches would clear up. Well, they haven't! Pain is worse after my head has been leaning forward and get back pain at the base of my spine! I get a saw achey pain behind my eyes as well occasionally.

Many thanks!

Very High Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension - 16 Lumbar Puncture In 2 Years

I was diagnosed in October 2006, after been admitted to Hospital with suspected Meningitis. They did a Lumbar Puncture, and the CSF pressure was very high, I was shipped out to a Hospital in Sheffield - Away from Uni, and even further away from family.

It was confirmed I had BIH.

Ever since, I've had to have Lumbar Punctures every 6-8 weeks, with the CSF always way too high. I was put on Diamox too, which didn't do anything at all. I'm now on Topiramate (Topamax), which also doesn't work for me.

I thought it was just people around me deliberately not understanding how painful and disabling it is, but after reading your experiences, it seems not many people understand.

Woke up this morning in pain (like most days), with dodgy vision and loss of coordination, so time for another LP!

Headache :: Tension Headache/prednisolone

I'm 27y,male,weight 44kg. I've started to have headache after having a very tough semester at college 2 months back and it become worse 2 weeks back when i visited a neurologist who diagnosed me with "tension headache".

He prescribed me a cortisone injection in addition to 9 days of prednisolone (3 days 60mg, 3 days 40mg, 3 days 20mg).

The tension headache has gone, however, I still have headache on the sides of my head and behind my eyes, some pressure in my ears sometimes.

During my prednisolone course,I had severe depression, mood changes, anxiety (i couldn't sleep), sweating & lose of appetite. (I didn't have any history with these weird side effects)

Now, it's day 6 after stopping the prednisolone and i still have some depression/worried but i think i'm getting better day after the other.

My questions:

1. How long does it take for Prednisolone to clear out from my system?

2. Since tension headache has gone, why am I'm still having headache (sides of head, behind eyes & sometimes pressure in ears).

Sciatica :: Lumbar Discectomy? Pros And Cons

I'm a 29 year old father of two and a plumber by trade. I have suffered with two herniated discs for two and a half years and am now suffering quite badly and trying to stay in work. I have gone through physiotherapy and have had a nerve root injection with no avail. I have received my letter to go for a pre op health check etc for a lumbar discectomy. After reading other stories on here etc I'd like to try and shed some light on is this worth having or not?

Gabapentin For Lumbar Discs, Nerve Pain?

for nerve pain in lower back/hip and leg. MRI in a few days. Known herniated lumbar discs, nerve pain new for past 6 weeks.

I cannot take morphine or derivatives due to it making me feel like I can't breathe so the anti epilepsy drugs are next try.

Dr gave me 300mg capsules but having taken one today I have asked to be given 100mg capsules and I will increase very very slowly. The side effects with one 300mg capsule was spectacular and I could not cope with this again let alone increasing the dose but can only hope that starting very low and only increasing very slowly I can tolerate

My question is, is it possible that just one 300mg tablet taken for the first time give pain relief as I am sure it did with me. Now its wearing off the pain is worse.  My Dr said that it takes up to 2 weeks for pain relief.

Back Issues :: Lumbar Pain And Sciatica

Nine months ago I hurt my back with an improper lift. Unlike several other back sprains, this one won't go away. Low back pain, and bilateral sciatica. Mostly dull pain, but shooting pain down legs when I bend backwards, or step into a hole that jars my back. Doctors have to play by the insurance company rules, so they treat with meds, then Phys Therapy, then guessing, and before you know it you have been hurting for 9 months. So I had an MRI that revealed a herniated disc with central canal stenosis and 2 other bulging discs.

How does one choose the method of treatment, or the type of medical pro. If you go to a surgeon, he wants to cut, to a chiro, he wants to crack and twist, you get the point. I'm being stoic about the pain, because I am concerned about side effects and drug dependency, but it's time to get this fixed and get on with my life. I would like to think that the body is equipped to heal itself. But, maybe not.

Had Lumbar Microdiscectomy - Bottom Of My Foot Is Numb

I just had a lumbar microdiscectomy yesterday on the L5-S1 disc. Right after I woke up and got up to walk in hospital I noticed the bottom of my right foot feels asleep. I never had this problems before. The reason why I had the surgery was from sciatic pain down my right leg going into my calf. I have had back problems with a herniated disc for 2.5 years. My latest flare up was sciatic pain for 3 months straight, I had a spinal injection, was in physical therapy, on pain meds and had no relief. I finally made the decision to go through with the surgery. My leg pain is completely gone, back incision hurts, but my main concern is the bottom of my foot is numb. Has anyone had this problem? I called the spine surgeon this morning and waiting for his call back. I was unable to speak with him after surgery because I was his 4th surgery of the day, he spoke with my husband when I was in recovery.

Spinal Surgery :: Post Lumbar Laminectomy

I am a 50 year old female who had lumbar laminectomy at L3/4 eight weeks ago for lumbar stenosis and spondylolisthesis. The surgeon also performed a dynamic stabilisation at this level. As I understand it, this involves the insertion of a flexible and rod and screws, similar to fusion but allowing more flexion at this level while at the same time preventing the vertebra from slipping. Prior to surgery, I was unable to walk or stand for more than 5 - 10 minutes without becoming uncomfortable because of weakness in my legs and a tight cramping sensation in my buttocks. Surgery has relieved me of these symptoms, but I now have aching in my lower back, groins and hips when standing or walking for more than 5 - 10 minutes. I wasn't given any physio follow-up after discharge from hospital, but have had a couple of sessions with a private physiotherapist. She seems to think that these pains are due to the ligaments and muscles having to stretch as my spine as been realigned and my pelvis is now tilted forwards instead of backwards as it was before. Has anyone else experienced similar pains and if so, how long did it take for them to resolve? I am also very stiff first thing in the morning and when getting up from a sitting position. I do not have any pain when sitting or lying down.

Disc Prolapse :: Anyone Gone Through Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion?

Is there anyone on the site who has had a Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion done.

I'm a little apprehensive about this op but I cannot stand the pain anymore, I'm now having problems peeing. God I can't believe I have to wait 4/5 months for this op and that's on the Urgent List.

Nobody understands when you tell them how much pain you're having, I'm so glad that I found this site as most people can sympathise with me.

Sorry for whining but I don't know how much longer I can cope with this Severe Pain & Numbness in my back and left leg and foot.

Lumbar Synovial Cyst Removed - Recovery Time?

I had a laminectomy with removal of a synovial cyst exactly 17 days now and feel wonderful. Last weeks follow up visit actually was an eye opener because i found out I was doing too much, like bending for example, and I am really suppose to take it easy so the scar tissue can form a strong bond.
My cyst was large and sitting on the nerve root. As soon as it was removed the compressed nerve popped right back up, all good news.

I am wondering how soon before i can start doing other things besides resting and walking. I understand the golf is not happening for at least another 6 weeks and that's ok, but can I swim or when can i ride a bike?

I have basically no pain aside from a little muscle spasms.

Lumbar Synovial Cyst Causing My Back Pain?

I have sever back pain and haven't been able to work since August. I am unable to stand, sit or walk for long periods of time. It hurts to sneeze, cough, bend or pick anything up. The pain is constant, stabbing at times and it feels like I have a rock in my spine. They have done facet and epidural injections. I take an anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxer and Norco (3 times a day). They tried to put me on Neurontin but it made me too sick. I have had every test done imaginable and basically what I have is degenerative disk disease with mild broad-base bulge. Bilateral facet arthropathy and ligamentum flavum hypertrophy. Indentation of the thecal sac in L4-L5. L5-S1 bilateral arthropathy. L3-L4 bilateral ligamentum flavum hypertrophy and a left nerve sleeve cyst (synovial cyst).

My surgeon wants to do a foraminotomy because I have radiculopathy on L4-L5 and then do a spinal cord stimulator for the pain. He isn't worried about the cyst...said it isn't the reason for my sever back pain. From what I have been reading, all of my symptoms sound like its the cyst causing at least some of the pain. Am I wrong to second guess his opinion? I just don't want to have these surgeries done and then later down the road turn around and have to have the cyst removed.

Lumbar Synovial Cyst Removal - Clamp Vs Fusion?

I'm scheduled for surgery next month to remove a synovial cyst in my lower spine. The pain is present only when standing and walking for long periods, but debilitating when it occurs. I've read so much on this site, I thought I would get some of your views.

My neurosurgeon plans to do a laminectomy to reach the cyst which he says is quite large. We debated about whether a fusion is necessary to prevent the cyst from recurring. There is a difference of opinion among surgeons. Two that I've had review my X-rays say I have some degeneration in the disk and should have a fusion. A third says to take the risk and avoid the fusion. Eventually my surgeon convinced me I should have this done in order to return to an active life vs sitting on the couch. He does minimally invasive surgery and does not use a cage or pedicle (sp?) screws as he believes they put too much stress on other disks. Instead he showed me a very simple clamp he has used successfully. Has anyone heard of this - alternative?

Pain Difference Between Lumbar Disc And Facet Issues?

Can someone tell me from their experience what the usual differences are between pain feeling when you have lumbar disc issues & pain feeling when you have lumbar facet pain?

Are there any significant markers at all? I have looked on web in detail and i just keep finding contrasting information.

Have lumbar problems but no one seems to be able to work out if pain is from disc issues or facets.

Recovery Time? Lumbar 4-5 Laminectomy With Synovial Cyst Removal

i am having a posterior lumbar 4-5 laminectomy with synovial cyst removal on August 27,2015. I have a 5 day trip to Germany planned 6 &1/2 weeks later.

I now know the recovery to be longer than the one week I had thought. I know it is at least 6 weeks, after my pre surgery intake with the wonderful nurse I have. Does anyone have feedback about a 8 hour plane ride to Europe with only 6 weeks recovery time? Thanks

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis? Pain In My Hips - Difficulty Climbing Stairs

I've been suffering with pains in my hips, causing problems with walking and standing. On a bad day the stairs are difficult to climb. This has been going on for about a year now. In the last 6 months or so I have developed a sciatic like pain, only happening when standing up and walking to far. The last few days it's been getting worse and I now have pins and needles in my legs and feet. Sometimes both legs but mostly my left. The sciatic pain is only ever in the left side of my buttock. When I try to stand, I am simply unable to put any weight onto my left leg for a while. I'm 31 years old and a mother to 4 plus work. The doctors keep brushing me off because of my age but I'm sure what I am experiencing isn't right.

Urinary Incontinence :: Lumbar Spine Surgery - Edema Ankle Foot - Lasix

I have urinary incontinence which presented itself following surgery on lumbar spine back in 1992 and now I also have extremely swollen legs and feet due to the fluid retention. My doctor prescribed Lasix and so now I am having to deal with pants-wetting "accidents" which are so frustrating, but because of my physical disabilities these "accidents" are unfortunately unavoidable. I've thought about stopping the Lasix but have been advised against it by several healthcare professionals. They have all told me that if I don't take the Lasix, the fluid will not only be in my feet/legs but will also get to my heart and cause fatal consequences
