Camry :: Whine Or Growling Sound Noticeable At 50 Mph

Sep 15, 2014

2003 xle v6 auto... 105,000 approx... Seems to be developing a noise, which I hope is not the transaxle. It is a bit like a "whine" or "growling" sound, can't quite place it. Driving around at slower speeds with windows open, cannot really hear anything.

Up at 50 MPH or more it is noticeable and, unfortunately, seems to be getting louder. Does not seem to vary with speed. Don't think it is some weird wind noise.

I did do the poor man's trans flush about 6 months ago (drain pan, fill + 1 quart, disconnect hose, run a quart out, add quart, repeat until clean comes out) and it has been happy. Also did timing belt/idlers/wp a couple months ago. Did not see a way to change the diff. Seem to be a drain, but no fill, so I left it.

My suspects are - wheel bearing(s), cv/axle, transaxle. oh, tires, I guess.

Ford Transmission :: Gear Whine During Acceleration More Noticeable Near 50 MPH

Been having loads of fun with my Excursion. I've completely gone through the rear axle, new Yukon 4.30 ring and pinion and "ALL" new Timken bearings. I set the pinion at 30 inch pounds preload. Back lash is 13 thousands. But now I have a gear whine during acceleration. Slight at first but more noticeable near 50mph. Coasting or decel is quite. But just barely touch the gas pedal and it starts to whine.

I know that the backlash spec is published as 6-10 but other sources state 12-15 thousands. So that's why it's set at 13. Gear pattern looked great to me. In fact most changes I tried had little effect. So is it just normal for a gear set to whine until broken in?? Should I reset the backlash down. I only have about 40 miles on it. But would like to fix before it's wrecks something.

Ford Excursion :: Growling Sound When Let Off Go Pedal

2 weeks ago I had some poorly installed spring shims start to slip out, the last day I drove the truck before parking it to wait on parts to arrive I started to hear this sound as I let off the go pedal. New shims were installed yesterday but I still have this sound. I had never heard it before the day mentioned above. It only lasts for a second or so and only when letting off the gas at above 30 mph, at very low speeds and let off gas no sound. Here is the link to a really short video, hopefully you can clearly hear the sound twice in the clip, I am doing 40 mph and feathering off the gas. Phone is laying in cargo area so there is no picture, just sound. What is that sound?

Honda - Accord :: Growling Sound Comes From Transmission Once Car Reaches 40 MPH

I have 1992 Honda Accord, LX. Automatic. 108K miles. There is a "growling" sound that comes from the transmission once the car reaches 40 miles per hour. This sound increases and decreases with the speed of the car. The car shifts fine. Does not buck. The transmission fluid most likely needs to be changed considering the mileage, and I'm not aware if it was ever changed considering I am not the original owner. I have been told a few things are possible causes. Changing the fluid may work. (Questionable) There is a sensor that can cause this. And lastly, it needs to be rebuilt.

Lexus RX 2010-15 :: Noticeable Sound Between 30 And 40 Mph

I've been trying to trace a whirring sound since purchasing my 2010 RX350 this summer. I've tried two sets of Michelin tires, Primacy and Latitude HP, which I thought was the source of my sound.

But what are the chances of two sets of tires making the exact same sound

The sound is most noticeable between 30 and 40 mph on smooth roads and is like a "playing card against bicycle spokes' only much softer (if you are old enough to remember that).

Currently I'm thinking gear mesh noise from the front transfer case or maybe there is a sensor for the anti-lock brakes or traction control that reads a toothed 'gear' for measuring tire speeds that may be mis-adjusted.

Camry :: 2007 LE Growling Noise From Rear Right Wheel

I have 2007 Camry LE with about 88K miles on it. I get the growling noise from the read right wheel, particularly when turning right. I can very clearly hear it inside. Interestingly, this happens only first couple of times after I pull it off from parking.

I recently had the brakes and rotors replaced but the noise did not start coming until a couple of weeks later. I suspected it must have something to do with tires so I got them rotated. But that didn't stop the noise.

Initially, when I first heard the noise about 2 months back, it was very seldom but now it's almost everyday. When I got the tires rotated, I was told that I needed the rear wheels aligned. (But if it's due to alignment issue, shouldn't be coming from both wheels?)

Recently my 2000 F350 7.3 crew cab has been making a growling/vibration sound by the glove box at idle. Seems to disappear at speed/higher RPM.

Any thoughts on what might be loose at firewall passenger side area?

Camry :: 2011 - Low Pitched Hum From Front Of Car Noticeable Between 35 And 40 MPH

For Camry owners with a possible diagnosis for a bad front wheel bearing. About a week ago, I started to hear a low pitched hum from the front of the car, noticeable at first between 35 and 40MPH. Above 40 MPH, the sound kind of mixed with road noise, so it was difficult for me to determine if the sound got louder, etc.

This sound was reduced as the car was braking and disappeared completely when stopped at a light or parked in neutral.

I did not notice any change in the noise when turning left or right, but this observation MAY NOT have been accurate since I do not make many turns at 35-40 mph.

Took the car into the dealership and they diagnosed a bad front wheel bearing, which they had to order. Since this is a 2011 Camry with only 11,000 miles on it, it is a warranty repair.

Subaru - Suspension :: 2002 - Rattling Sound Noticeable At Low Speeds

I have 124,000 miles on my 2002 subaru impreza outback sport and this car runs very well and has been maintained well however the last couple weeks I have noticed a slight rattling sound toward the right front side of the car almost as if there were pebbles inside the wheel covers when the car is driven at low speed and I begin to accelerate. It also sounds as if the rattling could also be coming from the exhaust also as if it were loose fitting but the tailpipe is on the left looking from the rear of the car. Another possibility I thought of was the fender was loose or the tire was rubbing against the wheel well or something. It is one of those small annoying sounds that does not seem to warrant bringing in to a mechanic yet but I am curious about what that is.

Honda - Accord - Noises :: 1994 - Resonant Humming / Growling Sound Coming From Engine At 2000 Rpm

Sounds like I may have a problem that is not all that uncommon i have a 94 honda accord with 100k miles, runs great, handles great

Just last week I noticed a resonant humming / growling sound coming from the engine - it's very "vocal"it only occurs around 2000 rpm, and is more pronounced when decelerating there's no apparent loss of power or fuel efficiency the sound occurs with or without the transmission engaged and seems to be worse after the car has heated up a bit

Cat converter? Intake manifold?

Ford - Aviator :: 2003 - Noticeable Hissing Sound From Rear Of Engine Near PCV And EGR

I have the '03 Lincoln Aviator 4.6 DOHC. It has a noticeable knock/ping/chatter and somewhat sluggish acceleration. I notice the pcv hose was collapsed and shredded. I replaced the hose and valve, didn't change idle or acceleration and I still hear the hissing noise in the same region. I unplugged the egr valve and started the truck, the idle was the same as before I unplugged the valve. could a bad egr valve give a vacuum leak that is hard to detect? I tried testing for leaks by squirting starter fluid near the suspect areas, and I couldn't detect anything. Could a bad pcv valve be caused by a bad egr valve and/or vise versa?

Camry :: Road Noise Noticeable Starting At 30 Mph And Gets Louder With Speed

2008 SE V6 Convertible : I have noticed that the road noise has gotten significantly worse. I don't think it's the tires as they have been well inflated and still have about 80% tread left. The noise gets very noticeable starting at 30 mph and gets louder with speed, (by the time I reach 70MPH / 2.5K RPM its already VERY LOUD) and you can even feel the "grinding" vibration in the accelerator pedal and steering wheel. It seems to from the front. A kind of cycling hum (not constant; but broken like the tip of a helicopter blades). The noise does not change in turns; and it's not a loud clunking noise.

Camry :: 2005 - Noticeable Knocking After Timing Belt Change

I have a 2005 Toyota Camry with 120K miles that was bought used with 110K. The previous owner did not have the vehicle long and did not know if or when the timing belt had been replaced. I have read several blogs that recommend replacing the timing belt at 60 or 90K. To err on the conservative side I decided just to do it at 120K. Now my problem. Before the timing belt change there was a slight knocking from one of the cylinders. After the belt change the knocking is more pronounced. Q. How concerned should I be that the knocking is more noticeable? Could this be a by-product of the new belt and as it loosens the knocking will subside somewhat? OR, am I looking at valve job or worse?

Suburban :: 2000 - Vibration Noticeable At About 20 MPH / Audible Clicking Sound At Slow Speeds

I have a 2000 Suburban with about 170,000 miles on it. I'm getting an audible clicking sound at slow speeds which increases as the vehicle speeds up and also a fairly severe vibration which becomes noticeable at about 20 mph and becomes worse as the speed increases. I thought maybe driveshaft but things seem fairly tight. Also, this has gotten gradually worse over time.

Ok I figured out where the vibration was coming from...U joints in the front driveshaft are shot. Now I have another problem...I've removed the fwd u joint straps and according to the book, the driveshaft should simply slide to the rear into the transfer case so I can lower the fwd u joint but the problem is that the part of the shaft (which slides into and out of the transfer case) seems to be frozen/stuck. Do I simply beat on it with a hammer to break it loose or am I doing something wrong?

Camry :: 2003 V6 - Trans Makes A Very Noticeable Downshift Clunk On Stop

I have a 2003 Camry LE with 1MZ engine and U151 5 speed auto trans. 138,000 miles The problem is that the trans makes a very noticeable downshift clunk when stopping.

With light driving you can feel what seems to be a 2-1 downshift just before stopping. With aggressive driving and rapid stop the clunk is felt either when stopping or actually after the wheels stop turning depending on speed and hard braking. If you stop aggressively it actually feels like someone hit you from behind. It literally shakes the car.

TRANS FLUID is full and clean. There is no smell or burnt appearance. The trans tests good in forward and reverse stall tests. Neutral to drive/reverse engagement is also quick and firm.

Here is the fun part. The condition does not exist when cold. After the engine and trans warms up it starts happening. Also, after presenting the condition with a hot trans, I can shift it out of drive and into 3rd and have no problem at all no matter how I drive. To make things more interesting, I can erase the trans learned values with a scan tool and the trans shifts normally for a couple of days before the condition returns.

We are concerned that there may be damage done if this condition continues.

Camry :: 2011 LE - Sloppy Feel To Steering Most Noticeable At Freeway Speeds

2011 Camry LE with what I would call a mushy or sloppy feel to the steering. It is most noticeable at freeway speeds and requires an almost constant driver input to maintain the car in my lane with slight corrections back and forth right and left. This is fatiguing on long drives. It feels like there is too much power steering assist at higher speeds, although an independent mechanic said he didn't think it has variable assist power steering. There is no pulling in one direction. Alignment has been checked and it's ok, and tires are balanced and properly inflated.

Strong wind or large trucks passing me cause me to struggle to maintain the car in it's lane. Toyota dealer mechanics and the Toyota rep checked it and gave me the "drives as designed" answer and that there is nothing wrong with it. I had an independent mechanic look it over and he said there is nothing wrong and that there is nothing that can be done to change the feel of the steering. It is hydraulic steering and not the electronic power steering. I have test driven other Camrys as well as Corollas and other makes of cars and they all drive with a more sure feel to the steering and I just want my Camry to drive like that.
