View 2 RepliesSo I am on my way home after an honest 8, and I make it a mile down the road and goose the old girl a little off a stop light. Well next thing I know we have smoke rolling out under the hood, well it turns out the "smoke" was r134 refrigerant. The guy that recharged it said that the compressor failed and that its common with retrofits because 134a runs at a higher pressure.
Now I don't need a/c, and I might just leave it as is, but it would be nice to have the old girl working 100%. It also turns out that the front seal of the transmission is leaking, I am debating whether or not to just have the transmission rebuilt. it shifts fine but its gotta come out anyway. Its a 700r4 and the trans guy recommends stronger 3-4 clutches and a shift kit to make the holding pressure higher.
Last summer the car would randomly overheat and we would switch the heater on and the temp needle would nose dive into normal range in 30 seconds. It made me think that maybe it wasn't really overheating.
This summer its started again. It gets almost into the red within minutes of driving it. There have been times where I turned and the needle went from almost the red zone to the normal range. Making me think its not overheating, but that nagging feeling tells me I need to know for sure.
The car will overheat within a few minutes. There were no visible leaks. I replaced upper and lower radiator hoses and refilled lost fluids. Driving it the first time, the upper radiator hose popped off and overheated. I initially thought it was the clamp being faulty so I bought a new clamp. Installed new clamp. Same thing. Same hose popped off again. Put it back on and its leaking fluid around the hose some how.
I know the lower hose has a coil in it to prevent collapse, should the upper too (haven't seen it collapse)? Why might it be leaking around the hose?
Next is the thermostat. That will be replaced this weekend. I'm pretty confident that it isn't the engine block cracked or a bad head gasket.
How should I remedy this hose issue and what course of action should I go for next? Water pump?
I am having an issue with my transmission. Mine will not accelerate when in reverse, at all. When I take off in overdrive, the car revs up really high until about 30mph and then finally shifts and seems to drive normal at about 45-65mph,after that the car revs really high up to about 70mph (then i slow down). No problems with gear 1 and 2.
View 1 RepliesI recently noticed that my car A/C was not blowing cold AT ALL. I checked under the hood and noticed that I didn't even get a "click" when someone turned the A/C on. Like a dweeb, I went out and paid $28 bucks for a replacement A/C Cutoff Switch (the round thing that gets seated in the oil in the compressor). I didn't first check the power to the switch like I should have (doh!). There is no power going through the wires to the switch and just a few microvolts of change on the meter when I turn the A/C on and off. So, no power to the compressor = no A/C. The problem is, I can't figure out where the damn wires go and there is no obvious fuse or relay that controls the power to the compressor.
-How much power should be going to the compressor?
-Where the power source is for the two wires (I think one is dark blue and the other light blue)?
-What fuse/relay controls the power to that switch?
-What are the next steps in repairing this issue?
I checked every fuse in the fusebox in the side of the dash and they are all good.
I'm using a compressor clutch kit to try and pull off the compressor clutch plate from my '96 LT1. Using the tools I got the clutch plate almost all the way off but then it stalled. I've broken every one of the remover screws trying to get it off the last bit. I'm considering picking up a 3 jaw puller to get the job done.
View 5 RepliesI got a caprice 94 l99 it was driving perfect. i was on my way home then it started to put put then the engine cut. gave it like 3 mins it started drove 1 block started to put then the engine cut. now doesnt start at all just cranks the gas gauge says it has 1/4 tank of gas.

I've heard on some forums that this could be a bearing? Is it advisable for me to replace the entire clutch or just this bearing?
Either way, I assume I'll have to pull the clutch for which I think I'll need two special tools:
(1) clutch holder tool to break nut loose.
(2) pulley puller.
I have a 92 caprice 5.7. Vehicle had suddenly stopped ... Providing fuel to the tbi. I immediately checked relays etc all were good. Then I figured it had to be the pump because I didn't hear the whirl of the pump with the key forward engine not cranking. I replaced the fuel pump. Still same problem no fuel. I found the 20 amp fuse blown that sits next to the 2 relays. I replace the fuse then the fuel pump got energized as I cranked the engine it almost started but then the fuse blew again. I have a short in the circuit I believe. I don't have a wiring diagram,what else is on the fuel pump circuit so I can have a direction to start in to find a probable bad wire.
View 3 RepliesI have an 02' 2.0 Jetta Wagon, and the A/C is having some issues. Since I know close to nothing about A/C systems, I took it in to a few places to have it looked at. I've had the whole system Evac'd and recharged, and have had the low pressure fitting replaced (apparently there was a slight leak there), and the system is still not working.
The A/C worked fine when I first purchased the car a few months ago. Shortly after my 800 mile trek from Oregon, back to home, the A/C started to only work intermittently. The compressor would engage, then disengage, repeat...It seemed like a bad idea to keep trying to use it in its sad state so I stopped using it altogether. As I said, I had the system emptied and recharged, but it still only works intermittently. It sort of follows a pattern where upon start up it works longer, and switches on and off at shorter intervals, until it doesn't engage at all.
There are no strange noises from the compressor, and when it was hooked up to the machine, it proved to be performing its function well.
I have charged system 134 ... Compressor works at start up until warm, then light flashes and compressor disengages. No noise and gets cold until motor gets heated.
View 5 RepliesClutch for the AC Compressor will not disengage even with the AC off. The only way I can daily the car is if I disconnect the power from the AC Compressor at the compressor itself. Seems the AC compressor has a constant draw if it is plugged in.
Plugged = dead battery...
Unplugged = good battery...
I'm getting ready to rip the damn thing off the engine and calling it a day, but that would defeat the purpose of me buying a new compressor.
Just noticed yesterday that the compressor clutch does not disengage while the air conditioner is on. It is 2005 V6 Sonata Elite. All the other cars I have ever owned had compressor clutches that cycle. Internet searches indicate that there might be air conditioners with only a low-pressure switch.
View 2 RepliesJust put my car in for it's first year's service(20,000 km). I made an observation to the service tech that during warm weather, there is a noticeable rattling whirring sound.
During testing, they were able to compare my car with another and confirmed the noise to be from the air-con compressor.
The A/C in my truck stopped working last year, and this year I intend to fix it. I believe the problem is with the compressor clutch because it was making noise as it would engage or disengage. It was making this noise for a good year or so, and then one day the noise stopped and I have no A/C. So I am only assuming its the clutch.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2009 VW Tiguan SE with about 85K on it. Yesterday driving to work the alternator/ac belt broke, after replacing the belt the AC compressor will not turn on. The AC was running fine up until the belt broke, so far I have checked all the fuses and the codes, no bad fuses and no codes. I read in the manual about a compressor shaft overload protection but it doesn't go into detail what this is or how to reset it. I could imagine that since the belt broke while the AC was on the system could think there is an issue with the compressor and shut it off but I can't figure out what to check or how to reset it. The AC system was checked a few months ago and has been producing cold air so I don't think there is a coolant level issue.

View 3 RepliesI have a 2013 Prius with few miles. It seems like the air conditioner compressor makes a very loud humming noise. It's a little annoying inside, but outside it is really loud. I know it is running off an electric motor and I expect that to make some noise, but this seems excessive. Is this normal? Also, the compressor keeps running all the time. I thought they were supposed to cycle on and off. It seems like all air conditioning compressors do this to conserve energy, even a house air conditioning unit.
View 19 Repliesl have a 2000 model accent and the air conditioner compressor clutch is not engaging . you press the 'AC 'button and the indicator comes on when a fan speed is selected which l am sure is the correct operation.l checked for 12 volts at the coil terminals of the relay and there is no 12 volts.l shorted the switch contacts of AC relay and the compressor did engage so the wiring from the relay base to the the compressor clutch is ok. l also checked the contacts of the 'AC' switch itself and it seems to be ok. l haven't had much luck with sorting out the wiring from the switch to the relay as l do not have a wiring diagram.

What should be the approximate cost of the parts and labor to replace? Is it normal to have died after 8 years? It was a reconditioned one.
I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma, 5 speed manual pickup.
Occasionally I use the air conditioner. I'll be driving along and it's working fine but then it stops putting out cold air. I pulled into the mechanic one day and confirmed that when it is not putting out cold air, the compressor still seems to be running.
If I go into a store for about 15 minutes and then come out again, it works again. What might be happening?
