Hearing weird noises at car start-up from the engine?
My 13' Elantra Sedan has around 3K on it and a weird noise comes from the engine at start-up.
Sometimes it goes away quickly and sometimes it will linger for a while.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Start Car (reproduceable with A/C on & off)
2) Wait for wind-up whine (starts out low, then speeds up, then stops) -

Listen to first six seconds. My sound file has the noise for a slightly longer period.
My car started doing this about a week after purchase. It's been consistently doing this every morning. In high elevation, colder climate the sound is louder and longer. Car's been to service 4 times. Service Trip summary:
1) Returned as cannot reproduce
2) Replaced Starter (even though sound happens After start)
3) Replace belt tensioner
4) Service stop, tech said he would contact his rep - rep said no fix "it's normal- related to component in timing chain". (Huh?)
Service tech said he's heard a few of the 2012 Elantra's with this noise.
So I had my first oil change this past weekend at the dealer. I just noticed that the engine whine during my AM start-up is gone. They must have done something else to my car besides the oil change.

This only happens when the car is cold(not weather) and after a few minutes the noise is gone. I have aftermarket lowering springs on the car, do you think that caused the problem?(I'm thinking no)...
View 4 RepliesSo I've noticed this alarming engine rattle when I first start car as if there is no oil? It only lasts a few seconds! Was it diagnosed with Hyundai? Maybe a quirk of the motor, but seems like over time would cause excessive wear on engine?
View 14 RepliesMy 2012 with 5300 miles on it (oil change at 4400 miles) is now making a pretty significant lower end knocking noise at WARM STARTUP, as in when the car sits for about 10 minutes when I go into the store. It lasts for about two seconds, but it's significant and it's loud. It seems to have started about 500 miles ago and I can't say it was due to the oil change. Oil level is full and clean - I check it every weekend, even on a new car. Could this be a timing chain noise? Don't know. All I do know for certain is that this is very irritating and embarrassing for a new car. People around my car when I start it look at me like and seem to say "Really?"
Cold startup on my car is actually surprisingly quiet, compared to my Nissan Frontier V6.
Our "new" 2010 RX is our second Lexus with fobs & push-button start. When I push the start button to start the engine, I first hear a one-second "BZZT" noise from behind the instrument cluster, then the engine starts. This happens every time I start the engine, but I've never heard a noise like that in our 2008 ES350. So I wonder if this is normal? Hearing this odd buzz noise just before your engine fires up?
View 6 RepliesMy 2010 Prius V just past the 24000km mark. I have a buzzing noise coming from the engine bay during startup. It happens when the interior fan is on. You can hear it clearly after you start the car, during the silence of the "boot up", before the ICE kicks in. I can't be sure if it continues to buzz after that because the sound of the ICE drowns it out. However, If I shut off the fan during the boot up, the buzz disappears. Finally, if I leave the fan off and start the car, there is no buzz.
During a recent oil change, a hybrid technician claims that this is normal. It used to happen infrequently but now it is consistent, so if it was normal, I should have heard it when the car was new.
I just bought a 2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS (Canadian model) with 44k km. When I first test drove the car, the dealer (Honda) had the car warmed up and ready to go. As a result, I didn't notice the loud engine or anything. All I noticed is the engine was louder on acceleration versus my 2008 accord. I already bought the car but today I asked to test drive the car again (I'm excited) and noticed a loud ticking on startup? I asked the Honda dealer what was wrong and they simply said Hyundais are louder than Hondas. My 2008 accord has a ticking engine already but Honda is rebuilding the engine. This car is ticking louder than my 2008 accord. However, the car does quiet down when the engine is warm.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2012 Elantra with about 47,000 miles, and I've noticed that the oil pressure light comes on for about 2-3 seconds at startup. It never comes on while idling or driving, and the car runs like a champ. I checked the oil level, and it's good, and I get regular oil changes.

I don't know what is causing this but I bought a 2012 elantra last week (500 miles on it so far). Yesterday when I went to start my car the clicker wasn't opening or locking the doors so I had to use my key to open the door. When I got in my car would start but was "stuck" in park and I couldn't shift past park (yes I had my foot on the brake). After about 10 minutes it just randomly worked... Today I was driving to work stopped to get gas and as I was stopping I realized I couldn't shift passed neutral to put in park (I could go back and forth between drive and neutral). While this was going on my windows would not go up or down. Again after 10 minutes the problem seemed to fix itself. What could be causing this?
View 12 RepliesSo i'm only a week and a half into owning my Elantra, 800km on it and today when i started the engine i noticed a clicking/rattling sound, like the noise when someone sticks a piece of paper into a fan. Anyway it's quite minimal and you could hear it louder when you accelerate. I never noticed it before, even when i test drove the vehicle.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2012 Elantra sedan and I have a ticking noise coming from the engine.......I have had the noise since new.......but it was very faint.......it has gotten worse with time........I had mentioned this to the dealership when it was new but they said it was normal engine noise! It sounds like the older cars used to sound when there was a valve clearance problem.....but with the advent of overhead cams.....I'm not sure what the problem is.........78,000km on engine!
View 8 RepliesMy car has 63 000 km and engine is making loud knocking noise all the time. Dealer took a quick look and he asked head office. Now he wants to run some tests to see which valve is bad. He's hesitating between repairing or replacing the engine. I'm really disappointed of Hyundai quality. I really hope that I get new engine instead of poor repair job.
View 17 RepliesMy girlfriend owns a 2012 Elantra limited with approximately 20k miles on it. Two weeks ago she asked me to listen to it, because it was making a clicking noise. We've had sub zero temps here in Wisconsin, so I assumed it was the normal cold start up noise.
I quickly realized it was something much worse. It sounded like the timing chain was making noise. We took it to the dealer ASAP. They tore into it and said that the timing chain tensioner had failed. Now ten days later they called and notified us that the engine was still making noise after the tensioner had been replaced and the oil pan is full of metal shavings. It sounds like they will be replacing the engine.
I saw some other threads lately other people having startup problems thought i would post mines as well. Mines sometimes would startup then rattle alot/Car shakes and spit excessive smoke from tail pipe. Then sometimes it would startup up at all, No crank No Check Engine Light either

I have noticed that when the car was in park today right after I started her I heard a semi loud tapping noise coming from the engine... It slowed down when I turned the wheels or played with the brakes... As I went into drive the noise went away after about 20 feet of driving..
What this could be? Is it normal... Just bought the car last week with 45K miles on it and just want to make sure if it is a normal noise or not or whether I should bring her into the dealer.
2013 Elantra manual. 60,xxxkm, owned from new, purchased in August 2013. Oil changes always done within 5-7000km. Was 2000km over my oil change due date when this happened (haven't had time to get it done, been driving my motorcycle mostly). Driving around today I dropped my wife off, then I heard a quiet ticking noise under very light acceleration.
The noise would go away under normal acceleration, no noise while revving, and no noise while engine braking. The noise got worse after about 5km. I was in traffic and engaged the clutch into first gear, the car stalled violently. Turning the key results in a click, then nothing. In 1st gear the car will not roll forward. In reverse the car will not roll back. It still rolls in neutral. Had it towed to my local Hyundai dealer and got a rental. Waiting on the results.
Never saw a drop of oil on the ground while parked, and never smelt any oil burning. I run between 87 and 91 octane, whichever is available. I have the extended 160,000km 8yr warranty, hopefully this is covered as I still owe about 15g's on the car.
You know the ticking noise that is normal for our engines? Well, below 25 degrees F, it is the most worst noise ever. It sounds like the valve train is going to explode. Just keep in mind I've driven many cars. The ticking noise shouldn't be outrageously loud.
But my main problem that is worrying me is this WHOMP-WHOMP-WHOMP noise. The higher the RPM the faster the noise. Doesn't matter if the car is moving or not and I know it's coming from the engine. I hope it's not related to the loud ticking. It only happens for approximately 5 minutes. After that, there's no WHOMP sound and the ticking goes back to normal sound levels.
I own a 2002 Elantra with 75000 miles.
This just happened recently this winter. After a cold startup I hear a constant hissing noise (for lack of better word) coming from under the hood for about 5 minutes .
This is NOT the kind of sharp noise that you would hear from a loose power steering belt but it is definitely coming from that area (towards the passenger side close to power steering belt/alternator), though I could not pinpoint the exact location.
Everything seems to be working fine and after about 5 minutes it goes away. I am not missing any fluids and don't experience any other symptoms.
