Ford Escape / Hybrid :: 2001 XLT V6 - Cold Start And Stutter / Codes Read P0171 And P0174

Nov 15, 2013

I got a 2001 Escape XLT (V6) a couple of months ago. Its in great condition, only 82k miles on it too. It had the notorious door handle issues which I have had fixed. It also had the wet weather stuttering problem, which I had fixed by having all 6 spark plugs replaced (Motorcraft OEM plugs), the back 3 coils replaced, upper intake gaskets replaced, Valve cover gasket replaced, PCV valve replaced (motorcraft).

It runs great when its warm, the problem I am having is when its cold outside and the engine is cold, it starts up fine but idles like crap and if its really cold outside, it starts and dies 3 or 4 times before it can even get to the crappy, stuttering idle. I have to intermittently feed it gas to keep the cold idle going long enough (3 or 4 minutes) before I can drive it. Once the engine is warm it drives like a champ. The only warm engine issue, is occasionally after driving it and putting it in park, the engine will rev up to 2000, 3000+ rpms, and just keep going up until I shut the engine off.

The codes read P0171 and P0174, which are lean on bank 1 and bank 2. It had also thrown a misfire on cyl 6 but once I cleared that it hasn't come back, just the lean codes are still present.

From what Ive been reading, this can be a number of issues, ranging from the IAC valve, EGR valve, MAF or the lower intake gaskets. I'm very much a rookie when it comes to car mechanics, but I think I can handle changing the IAC, EGR and MAF since they are all on top of the engine. However I don't know if I could handle the lower intake gaskets. Ironically, the gaskets are the cheapest part, but the most labor if I paid someone else to do it.

If I replace the EGR, do I also need to replace the EGR Modulator as well? Looking for brand names that are best bang for the buck when it comes to these other parts I have mentioned?

Ford - Explorer :: 2001 - Too Lean Codes P0171 And P0174

Working on my son's 2001 sport trac. 200K miles but it has always been a great running truck.

I have two CEL codes:

P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1)
P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2)

I have found several issues so far, but have yet to get rid of these pesky codes.

So far I have changed:

- Intake Gasket - I had coolant loss which replacing this gasket fixed.
- PCV Valve and Hose - valve was damaged and the hose leaked.
- EGR Valve - Valve was leaking
- Fuel Filter
- Mass Airflow Sensor

The engine does appear to be running much smoother now, but the lean codes remain.

Ford - Expedition :: 1999 - Error Codes P0171 And P0174

I have a 1999 Ford Expedition with 163,000 miles.The vehicle registers a service code of P0171 and/or P0174, lean mixture.The vehicle starts fine, but may stall or hesitate when first started or at red lights.While driving, there is no issue.

I just replaced the MAF sensor and the EGR sensor, but no change in the condition.In 2007 or 50K miles ago, the oxygen sensors were replaced. What could be the problem or solution?

Ford - Explorer :: 2003 - Lean Codes P0171 And P0174

2003 Sport Trac. My car was not starting, told my fuel pump, replaced twice and nothing. Found out about inertia switch and changed it, now car runs.

Before this switch blew out my car was running perfectly, no check engine, nothing. Now i have changed my fuel pump twice and put a brand new fuel filter in and soon after i get lean codes P0171 and P0174. My fuel pressure is 60psi at idle and drops to 0 after about 30 seconds when the car is shut off.

A lot of my intake is new since i did have a vacuum leak before, so i do not suspect that is it, especially since this happened after the new fuel pump. I am completely stuck as to what i should do. And i get hesitation when trying to accelerate sometimes

Ford Escape / Hybrid :: 2001 - Code P0303 And P0171 / Cylinder 3 Miss And Lean Condition Bank1

Brought home tonight a 2001 Ford Escape 3.0L 24 Valve V6. Bought it from a mechanic who's customer didn't want to put any more money into it. Has 185000 miles on it and it throwing the P0303 & P0171 codes. Cylinder 3 miss and Lean condition bank1.

Mechanic thinks it is a valve seat in the cylinder head next to the fire wall. Before I start replacing the cylinder heads with new remanufactured heads I plan on doing a compression test and leak down test.?

Ford Excursion :: Check Engine Light Illuminated For Codes P0171 And P0174

Coming home from spring break towing the TT, the Check Engine light illuminates. Seems to be sputtering at idle, but otherwise OK, so we continued home.

Scanner lists the P0171 and P0174 codes. Ok, where to begin? based on internet info, started by cleaning the MAF sensor and throttle body. When I pulled apart the intake, noticed that the grommet which feeds the MAF in the air intake had become separated letting air bypass the MAF. Hence the reason for the codes.

If you get these codes, check the grommet for the wires feeding the MAF in the air intake to make sure it hasn't become separated from the intake. No more codes.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Engine Service Light - Codes P0171 And P0174

2001 F150 5.4L Triton Motor. Everything seemed o.k. then got the Engine Service Light. Checked with reader and above codes only appeared. Read numerous articles/videos and pulled the PCV hose/boot assembly and replaced the whole thing with oem part. Visually checked for disconnected tubing = none found. After this and with the new hose assembly in place I performed a reset. With the scanner still connected restarted engine and read values: ST FTRM1&2 = -.08~+2.3, both oxygen sensor voltages are varying and the LT FTRM1&2 hang around +26 and +28.

From what I understand the ST seems o.k. but the long term is WAY OUT OF WHACK. Started it up again and took carb cleaner spray and covered all the connections I could see = no change in engine rpm. No cracks in the air cleaner body. Big plug to the MAF was inserted and plugging the hole. I am thinking of making a smoke "machine" and trying that or removing the hoses from the throttle body and plugging the holes in the throttle body and see if that clears them up. IF it does then connect one by one and keep checking the values. Lot more work but I am at a loss.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - SES Light Came On - Showing Codes P0171 / P0174

2002 F150 - 5.4 ... So just bought this truck about a month an a half ago. No problems but the other day the SES came on. It is showing P0171 and P0174. And P0000 (almost forgot that one) was told that's generic though. Haven't really noticed a difference in the way it's running. Has been extremely cold here in WV but the only thing I can notice (or think I notice) is the gas mileage has gone down a little. After reading some on this forum I'm looking for a vacuum leak correct?

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 4x4 Doesn't Engage - Codes P0171 And P0174 When Switch To 4LO

Just recently replaced the driver side 4wd actuator. When testing the system to see if it was working, I noticed that in 2wd everything seemed to be in order (wheel spun without the half shaft, no grinding noises on test drive, seemed good to go).

However, when I switched to 4hi, the dash light "4HI" would come on but the wheel still spun freely without the half shaft. When the truck was off, the wheel and half shaft spun together as they should when vacuum is released from the actuator. When I switched to 4lo, the dash light did not come on and the check engine light came on. Pulling codes revealed P0171 and P0174.

Could these codes be caused by a bad solenoid? Is the solenoid not switching the vacuum off and that's my issue? Are there other possibilities?

Camry :: 2008 LE V6 - CEL And Codes P0174 P0171

I just did an oil change at my vocational school on my grandpas car, 2008 LE V6. On the way back it threw a CEL. Codes are listed in the title. Now googling those codes i found info on other car manufacturers i.e ford, dodge etc.. But i found nothing in regards to a gen 6 camry. It seems like this code has something to do with the engine running lean. Bank 1 and bank 2. What could cause these codes and what could be a possible remedy. P0174 and P0171 were both pending and setting a cel don't know if maybe they were pending before i did the oil change.

Ford - Explorer :: 2003 - P0171 And P0174 Codes - Rubber Elbow Begin To Collapse

2003 Ford Explorer, with P0171 and P0174 codes, common problem, as I have read. I pulled the cover over the engine off, and I immediately found the likely problem. There is a hose/connection that runs from the valve cover on the right side, about 6 inches behind the oil fill tube across and looks like it comes into the Carb. Where it turns to come into the carb is a rubber elbow. This elbow has a hole in it. Temporarily I have used electrical tape, but when I run the vehicle, I see the elbow begin to collapse. I believe the elbow is getting weak with age, plus the hole/tear doesn't work. Anyway, what i the part number, or what this is called. Hoping Advance Auto, or Napa will have it, just don't know what it is called, and can't figure out the part number. Otherwise I will pull it off tomorrow and take to advance and see if they can match it.

Chevrolet - Tracker :: CEL Flickers Along With P0171 And P0174 Codes

My 2002 Chevy Tracker recently has been running poorly after consuming a 1/4 tank of gas. The check engine light comes on the scan tool reports P0171 and P0174 bank 1 and 2 lean(it's a 2.5 liter V-6). If I remove and replace the gas cap it runs better but not perfect. Once I use another 1/4 tank the symptoms return. I have noticed the cap is hard to remove lately. This has been going on for two weeks It's been to 2 garages one of them told me my catalytic converters are plugged up and wanted 2500 to fix .

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1999 B4000 - Random Stalls / P0171 And P0174 Error Codes Come Up

I have a 1999 B4000 V6 4.0L with 78K miles on it. I recently had P0171 and P0174 error codes come up. I replaced the MAF sensor and have not had the codes return but now the truck will basically stalls out when sitting at a stop light. It does not do it all the time just randomly. It has never done it when engine is cool but only once up to temp. The idle is smooth at cold engine but begins to get rougher once warmed up (nothing too bad just noticeable). I cleaned the IAC with MAF cleaner but no joy. I reseated all plug cables at the coil but no change. RPM around 600-700 then fluctuates up a bit then truck will stall quickly( I usually cannot put other foot on gas in time to get it to increase RPM before it dies)....

Suzuki - Verona :: 2005 - Fixing Codes P0171 And P0174

My Suzuki has been in and out of maybe 5 shops in attempts to fix engine codes P0171 (system lean) and P0174 (bank 1 rich). None of them have successfully done so. I tried to take it into a dealer, but I was informed that diagnostic would take several hours (maybe $1000), and that the fix may be another ~$1500-2000, even though I have already replaced many parts related to these codes.

The dealer advised me to give up on the car, as the repairs could easily exceed the value of the car. I don't really care about that, I just need a reliable car that works.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 1999 - Check Engine Light Codes P0171 And P0174 Lean On Bank 1 / 2

I have a 99 f150 with the 4.2l v6 with a 5 speed 173000 miles. I picked it up not to long ago. When I first got it it had both the P0171 & P0174 lean on bank 1&2 it was also siting for a while. I replaced the fuel filter which was filled with black fuel, also changed the PCV valve, cleaned the MAF sensor, and changed the oil. I cleared the code, drove it for a little bit and the light came back on after 20 miles.

I then proceeded to replace the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets. Upon doing that i noticed that i was missing one of the linkages for the IMRC. I went to the junkyard and pulled off another linkage rod off the same motor. ordered new plastic clips, put the IMRC on cleaned everything up and began putting it back together. I also cleaned the Injectors while i had them out as well and put in new spark plugs and wires.

Put everything back together. code was cleared since the battery was disconnected. drove it and then the engine light came back on again. this time it was only the p0174. so i then both the upstream and downstream O2 sensors on bank 2, reset the code and it came back on again. I'm lost.

GMC - Sierra :: 2000 - RPMs Drop Rapidly - Codes P0174 / P0171

I have a 2000 GMC sierra 1500 5.3 L V8. Recently I have noticed that when I first start my truck, especially if it's a cold start, it doesn't seem to be running right. It sounds almost as if it's not getting enough fuel to me but I'm not sure. It will first run really good, and then it will drop in RPM's pretty rapidly and almost sound as if it was about to die, which it has died a couple of times in the past from this problem.

Once I give it some gas it seems as if it comes back to life, but if I happen to stop at a red light or stop sign pretty soon after driving, I will encounter the same problem, where it sounds as if it may be about to die. After I get going though, the problem disappears and the truck runs great. I decided to pull the codes finally today, and code P0174 and code P0171 popped up. I have looked at the vacuum hoses and they all seem to be in good shape, but like I said earlier, I could be wrong.
