I have a vibration coming from the rear. I put new tires on yesterday. Still it vibrates. I'm on the verge of doing a complete driveshaft overhaul very soon. The u_joints look a little worn but I can't feel any slop. I have watched a few videos on the slip yoke. How do you fix the slip yoke.

View 14 RepliesBrought the truck home the other night after having the 4:88's and locker installed. At about 65mph plus I have a severe vibration that sounds like it's coming from the front. It's bad enough I can feel it in the floorboards.
After some research I'm thinking the drive shafts need to be balanced due to the increased speed they are now running at. The u joints are good and I trust the installer did a good job putting the gears in.
Factory gears were 3:73's. 7" of lift on 37's. Any other parts other than the drive shafts?
Since I bought this '05 Ex, I have had a driveline vibration. Not bad mind you... just barely noticeable when I let off the gas going 50+ mph. I had my local Ford dealer change the Ujoints and it worked a little.
I just installed Firestone Air Bags on the rear axle. I put 20 lbs. of pressure in them and it raised the rear exactly 1 inch (I measured before and after). After the air bags were in and pressurized and the rear lifted 1 inch, I took it for a drive. WOW! The driveline vibration is completely gone. Smooth as glass.
Question that I need opinions on from those who have more experience with an Ex than I do: Did my rear springs sag enough to cause a driveline vibration? And did the lifting of 1 inch put it BACK to stock height so that the driveline is now correct?
When I bought the truck it had some crap tires on it and the deal was that they had to put tires on it for me. I just picked it up and notice that I have a vibration at 40mph it then goes away by 45 then it comes back at 60 then gone by 65. The vibration feels like it is come from the rear.
View 3 RepliesI had the rear axle seals replaced less than 1000 miles ago. Now the axle is getting whiny. First I thought maybe that the tires made noise but now I'm pretty convinced it comes from the axle.
With a seal replacement, what do they do that might impact the axle - over tighten the bearings?
I also had the rear diff fluid replaced - perhaps they put in the wrong stuff...
Should I replace fluid and see if that stops or should I simply take it to the dealer and let them deal with it?
2003 in sig. when going around corners slow I can feel and hear a chatter or vibration coming from what I think is the rear end. I am running amsoil 75/140 in it and added some friction modifier. Do my clutches are shot and making noise or do I need to add more friction modifier ?
View 7 RepliesA couple of weeks ago I heard what sounded like a loose heat shield, coming from under the Ex. It went away, but then came back a few days ago. I got underneath and looked at all the welds on heat shields and for anything that seemed loose, I found nothing. Yesterday it started sounding like a card in bicycle spokes, coming from the right rear. This afternoon I pulled the wheel off along with the brake caliper and disc. What I found was that one of the springs on the parking brake shoes had broke and has been ground up in the drum. I didn't take any pictures, but thought if others hear that sound it's something you may want to check.

I was told roof rack so i removed cleaned and resealed all bolts around wholes with silicone. Rain today an still have water coming in? See rite on edge of headliner gets wet. How hard is it to remove headliner? Maybe not all way out but could drop enough to see whats going on in rear compartment. Its a 2002 xlt...
View 12 RepliesI have a clunking sound coming from the rear of my X when I stop and take off. The sound does not happen until the vehicle has been driven for a few miles. After it has been driven, I will get one clunk when I stop. When I take off I will get one clunk as the vehicle starts to accelerate, and another clunk as I give it a little more gas. What could be the cause of this? I do not get the sound when I shift from park to drive, or drive to reverse.
View 14 RepliesI was running a small errand today, about 10 miles round trip. When I started out, I heard a small 'clunk' sound coming from the rearend. When I was on the return trip and making my last stop, the 'clunk' sound had become quite louder as I accelerated, and could really feel it. When I got home, I took a look and was expecting to see maybe a sway bar link detached or the bushing worn.
I did not expect to see two lug nuts completely gone, including the stud, as well as the holes in the rim no longer round. Big gouges in the rim around the remaining lug nuts, about to be sheared off! The other side had two missing lug nuts, however, the rim is still intact. What would cause such horrific damage? I am lucky that I was not driving on the freeway at 80 mph! This is my 2002 Excursion 4x4.
2000 Excursion V10 4x4. I'm getting a popping noise coming from the rear end when I apply the brakes and come to a complete stop and when I release the brakes to take off. It only happens the moment it comes to a complete stop and the moment it takes off. Not when I'm putting it in forward or reverse or accelerating or decelerating. U joints are fine. I was laying under the truck poking around the other day and when I roll it back and forth in park the few inches it'll go, when it comes to the end of it's travel the axle wraps a little and it seems like the transfer case output shaft flange is moving in and out of the transfer case and causing the noise. I'm assuming there is a snap ring holding the output bearing in place. I didn't have time to drop the driveshaft but am planning on it this weekend to see if it still does it when I roll it and to inspect the transfer case. I need to check to make sure the driveshaft splines are not seized up but they seem to have a little free play to them.
View 2 RepliesOur excursion usually sits unless we are towing or need to haul a group of people. The past three days my wife has been using it as a commuter. Yesterday she told me that two times at start-up she has heard a loud clunk/thump sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. At first she thought it was happening when she engaged the brake to put it in drive. Today she called me and told me the sound came just after start-up while the vehicle was warming up before the brake was applied. What this could be? I wish I would have observed it so I could give more details.
View 2 RepliesI have noticed a few drips coming from the rear axle input shaft where the drive shaft connects. It has only done it once and there is no residue on the trailer hitch so I know it didn't dump everything on the road. If change this seal, how difficult is it and do you have any information which might make it easier.
View 14 RepliesAfter putting my front end back together except new springs, new shocks, and new track bar, just to give everyone a little history of what I've done to it. I've had it for 8 months and maybe put 1000 miles if that because of working out of town a lot and the front end torn apart. I've noticed a louder roar coming from the rear end when taking my foot off the accelerator without pressing the brake. It feels like the tow button is engaged, but isnt. I have no issues with handling besides knowing it still needs alignment. I'm taking it to the dealership tomorrow for a 4 wheel alignment. It sounds and feels like I'm riding on mud terrain tires.
View 14 RepliesPulled off of the freeway on my way home from a superbowl party and felt some vibrating coming from my rear passenger tire. It's snowing pretty heavily here in the Minneapolis area so I thought it was just snow packed into my rim throwing off the balance. I pull into my driveway and go to look at it and find it flat. TPS indicator light never came on.
Long story short, I'm taking the car in to a dealership in the morning to get a new tire, since it will be covered by my wheel tire protection plan that I got when I bought the car. Also will want them to take test my TPS and fix it when they see it doesn't work.
I just purchased a 2009 LS460l and noticed a really deep vibration coming from the rear of the vehicle. The vibrations occur when I am at a complete stop and attempt to accelerate the vehicle turning to the left or right. Initially, I thought the tires were rubbing (18inch wheels), but after taking it to my local Lexus dealership they seemed confident the vibrations were occurring because my center differential needed to be flushed a refilled with 3 quarts of new fluid (they claimed the fluid was filthy) which is ~$150/quart. The car has brand new tires and all of which were just balanced/aligned.

A few mechanics said it was a worn bearing and I may want to get that fixed in near future. Well here it is 2011, I can't stand the sound anymore and am concerned what other damage (if any) I may have put on my car.
View 4 RepliesVibration coming from either the roof rack or rear of the vehicle? I seem to get it in cold weather sometimes or when I accelerate from between 40 and about 60 mph. I have checked to see if the roof rack needs tightening but it looks good. Of course, every time I bring in for service, guess what, they cannot replicate the sound.
View 8 RepliesI am noticing an audible vibration coming from the rear of my wife's 2004 Sienna van when applying the brakes. I have inspected and confirmed there are no fluid leaks,there is ample material left on all pads and the pads still fit snugly into the retention clips. Also, the pads and rotors show no sign of uneven wear. Front brakes were replaced in 2009.The van currently has ~63000 miles on it.

I had codes for misfires on #4 and #8. I replace the spark plugs and coil packs on all 10 cylinders and codes changed to P0354/P0358 - primary/secondary circuit. Wondering if that is contributing to it.
I did the full reset process on the PCM. Codes cleared throughout the entire process. But once I stopped and restarted truck, codes came back.
My thinking is to get a replacement PCM first. I haven't done a lot looking over the wires to #4,8 coil packs. cursory look they seem to be fine.
