I just had my tork converter and flex plate replaced on my 2002 Explorer XLT, it has the v8 with 5 speed auto trans. My question is this : on the bottom of the bell housing under the tork converter is a round hole aprox 1 1/2 or 2 inches in diameter. Should there be a plug or cover of some sore to keed dirt and debri from getting in ?

I think a coil may have gone bad,,found a LOT of anti-freeze down in the spark plug hole.
Have replaced the intake but now need to fix the roughness.
Is there any easy way to check each coil? Or should I be checing something else?
The other day my 2002 Sport Trac with 4.0 started to miss badly. It has only about 90,000 miles on it. It started to do this suddenly from one turn of the key to the next. It also makes a weird noice that sounds as if its coming from the intake area that can be described as a "chuffing" sound thats in time with the engine. The intake also gets very warm to the touch. We have since stopped driving it. I sprayed carb cleaner all around where the intake meets the head with no change in rpm. I also checked the plastic hose that goes behind the engine to the pcv valve and its ok.
View 10 RepliesMy 2002 Explorer is having a problem. It started running rough suddenly and when I had it checked the # 6 coil pack on the spark plug was bad. We replaced it and it still ran rough. Found fluid on top of spark plug. At first thought it was oil due to the color but later figured out it was antifreeze. We do have a cracked thermostat housing that we tried to seal up a few months ago. Doesn't seem to be coming from there. This is my only reliable transportation.
View 4 RepliesI am working on my grandmother's 2002 explorer and it is stuck in 4wd. I have unhooked the plug that goes to transfer case and also took out the 4wd fuses and still stuck in 4wd. From what I have read on here that the electromagnet inside tc usually fails and does not engage or if the control fails unhooking it will make it so the front drive shaft is disengaged. So since my problem is still there after that it has to be the tc itself and should I replace tc or put a new clutch in it. Also can i take the driveshaft out it looks like behind the coupling is a slipyoke so the coupling would fall out.
View 7 RepliesHow I could take my ford explorer 2002 in to the shop to replace the radiator and come out with transmission fluid leaking. The mechanic said it is some kind of hose but it wasn't leaking before and after I drive I can see it dripping out. I'm just not sure if they messed up something. Unfortunately my husband is overseas and cannot check it.
View 3 RepliesOur 2002 Explorer E.B., V6 4wd 153,000 miles, when cold only in winter months the transmission is slow to go into gear, forward or reverse, takes 10 or 15 seconds to catch into gear. If you warm the car up for 5 minutes or so it is ok no problem. In warm weather it does not do this. Transmission shifts normally and runs great other than this. I changed tranny fluid and filter with Mercon V about 12 months ago. Could it be the solenoid pack or something else.

Successfully installed an engine block heater ! when I was under there I noticed an opening in the plastic that covers bottom of the motor compartment It was under what looks like the transmission on the driver side of the car . I was working through the access door to the oil filter of course. Is there supposed to be two doors under the car and one just is not been replaced ?
View 4 RepliesMy '02 Explorer transmission is giving me a little trouble. The vehicle has 240,000 miles, but the transmission has been rebuilt several miles ago. I recently had the fluid changed, and I had them add a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix, which I have had good luck with in the past. Most of the time, the transmission behaves normally.
Occasionally however, when I come to a stop after driving for a while, the transmission stops pulling, like it has shifted into neutral. Sometimes it will re-engage after a couple seconds, and sometimes I try to hurry it along by shifting to Park, then back to Drive and it will go. If I am on an incline, and the vehicle does this, it will actually roll down the hill.
Hopefully there is a simple fix because this thing is too close to the end of its life to require a hefty repair investment! Maybe a switch or a sensor. I'd love to tell you that I checked the fluid level, but Ford forgot to put a transmission dipstick on it.....
I've just bought a used 2002 Explorer Sport Trac (Automatic) 120k+ odo and what I've noticed whenever I shift from Park to Reverse or to Drive it takes about 3 seconds before I feel a slight jerk moving forward before I can step on the accelerator for the vehicle to move backwards or forwards but if I step on the accelerator right after shifting to any gear except Neutral it won't run immediately as if the clutch is disengaged and after about 3 seconds it will suddenly engage. Is this normal or is there something wrong with the transmission?

She drove it home then when I got home the light was off and all seemed ok. I am taking it to have the codes read and hoping that my mechanics scanner picks up a code.
View 2 RepliesI had an 02 Explorer for years now and absolutely love it. It has almost 170,000 miles on it and is definitely showing its age. There's alot of rust underneath and ive been replacing things as they break. For about a year now I've been dealing with the transmission leaking fluid. This vehicle doesn't have a transmission dipstick and has to be filled from underneath. When I have the transmission full of fluid it works perfectly until recently. Now, when I go up a hill the transmission goes into an almost neutral state.
The R.P.M's will go up past 4000 and I'll have to stop. It doesn't misfire or bog down, just acts as if the tranny is in neutral. Sometimes I just sit there for a minute and its fine, other times I haven't been as lucky. In one instance I had to sit there for about 20 minutes, in another I disconnected the battery to reset everything, and on another instance it would stall out the moment I put it in gear. I know it's a little low on fluid and will be getting it filled again soon. I plan on possibly getting a new transmission this winter, but gotta keep it going till then.
Have 146k on an 05 SuperCrew, 4.6 V8, it's like my right arm! Don't know what I'd do without it. The other night, at interstate speed, something "popped" and the check engine light came on and it started missing. Left it at the mechanic's overnight, he swapped coil packs with no change, pulled the #6 plug and found it wet with antifreeze. No water in oil, no overheating, no other signs of head or gasket failure.......I'm tempted to put some stop-leak in it and change the plug.......

Trying to get my trailer plug to work. Don't have a owners manual. Looked in fuse box, fuses 104 , 114 , 107 and 118 are missing?
Need to know what they are? Also look for fuse numbers that have anything to do with trailer plug.
This a 02 with 5.4, had codes po306, pulled and checked sparkplug had moisture in it. Fixed that ran ok for a little bit then started again, no codes now and smells a little like rotten egg.

View 6 RepliesI have looked through a ton of threads to see if I can find one similar to my problem but have not. I have stock setup but had a dealer installed anti-theft device. The first time it would not crank, it was like the the anti-theft plug was missing so I checked out the key, tried the spare and finally removed it all together. I checked all the fuses and swapped the Starter relay for another of the same part number.
I later sifted it into neutral assuming it was the P/N Switch and it started. This continued intermittent for several days but then Neutral wouldn't work. I got under the truck and pushed on the actuator rod for the transmission and it started again for a few days. If finally failed again and I had time to buy a replacement switch.
Once installed I verified I had back up lights in reverse but still no crank. I have since pulled off the starter and had it verified as good. Is there more to setting/adjusting the neutral switch or is there something I am missing before I tow it in?
I have a vacuum line missing on the top of intake its a 98 explorer 4.0 sohc. I don't know where it goes...
View 2 RepliesI'm converting the automatic in my 94 explorer to a M5OD-R1 five speed transmission. I got the manual wire harness from the donor truck and it plugs into the existing connectors, but it's missing a connector for the evap canister. Should I just use the automatic harness and modify it to bypass the clutch safety switch and wire a switch for backup lights? Or use the manual harness and wire the evap canister to the ecm? I'm not much of an electrician, just trying to find the correct way to do this so the truck runs good.

Sometimes when I start my explorer it will idle down and die immediately, I restart and it will idle about 400-600 really rough, sounds like it is missing. When I drive it it is jerky and the acceleration is sluggish but after I get it up to about 20 mph it clears out and then drives and idles fine until I shut it down. Plus these things only happen about every third time (on average) that I drive it. Lastly it's not giving me any codes. What this could be?
View 2 Repliesi have a 98 buick century has around 180000 miles and it ran perfect, then two days ago i changed my spark plugs b/c they were 2+years old i got NGK Vpower and gapped them to .06. i had to roll the engine forward when i got to the back 3 plugs. so anyways after all pugs were changed i took it for a drive it was running fine, then i noticed when i got on the highway when i had to accelerate it missed a few times then on down the road it would go fine until i had to give it a little gas.
It jerks a little bit and it sounds like shit. But it idles alright and light acceleration thru town is fine. i also had it tested at autozone and i got a bunch of stuff about vacuum something and 02 sensor but nothing about misfire or coil pack malfunctioning. all the vacuum tubes on the engine are all sealed that i can see. and like i said it ran perfect before hand so i know its nothing internal. i just cant figure what happened.
