My 05 Explorer has started making a like slightly jumping motion and thumping sound when I let off the gas. It seems to maybe happen when it wants to gear down but it I give it the slightest gas it quits. Do you check the ans fluid when it's hot or cold? I checked it hot and it ran out.

I have a 2003 Explorer 4.0l 4x4 auto. Yesterday day the passenger rear tire got a flat, so I put the full size spare on, and went about my business. About 2 miles up the road is a stop sign, so I start slowing down, and while slowing down I can hear a whining thumping sound from the front of the vehicle. It wasn't doing this before the flat, but right after I put the spare on it starts to do this. It only happens when slowing down, not under acceleration.
View 6 RepliesI recently did a brake job on an 02 Explorer, consisted of new pads and rotors (Rear). The Slide pins were fine and the piston was not frozen in the calipers.
Shortly after the Explorer will occasionally make this "thump...thump....thump..." feeling/sound.
It is not vibration.... it feels more like passing over small bumps in the road.
It is most consistent from 30-50mph, but I have felt it from 20-65.
It is more prominent on decel, but you can feel it on accel as well.
It makes no difference if you touch the brakes or not, or if you push the clutch in and/or take it out of gear.
Speed does not seem to effect the timing of the "thumps" it appears to be the same from 20-60mph. I'm at a loss...
I have been hearing a muffled thud or knocking noise often, especially when letting off of the accellerator when coming to a stop...almost sounds like some kind of bracket might be broken and some part is slapping against another. No particular consistency in the pattern of the sound...very strange. I had the car in for service to replace the stepper motor and the tech indicated he thought changing it would take care of it...it didn't.
View 3 RepliesI have 2005 Chevy Malibu that has been making slightly metallic thud noises while turning. The car does not need to be in motion, but will make the noise in both forward or reverse in both directions. The noise is gradually increasing in loudness. I have inspected the CV boots and verified that this car has electric power steering assist. The dealer would not look at it, stating that the "Malibu's do this". Additionally the service rep stated that "if he had it checked out they would not find anything anyway." This noise does not sound like anything that should be ignored and sounds like major failure / safety issue pending. I can find no consensus on what might be wrong?

She has 2005 explorer and says the brakes are making noise while she is rolling. noise stops when brake is applied. she thinks it is coming from the front. I said I would check it out. I've owned a few trucks but never messed with an explorer.

I have had the muffler checked and the CV joints and everything checks out okay. The noise does not change if the car is turning left or right. The noise is also, curiously, no louder with the windows open or closed.
View 4 RepliesMy friend has a 2005 Subaru Impreza RS (2.5 L) that just (today) started making what amounts to a clicking or thumping sound once the car reaches about 30 mph. I'm sure it does it at slower speeds, but I was unable to hear it. It is definitely in the front end. And seems to be coming from the drivers side. I asked if she had hit any large potholes recently, and the answer was no. Around three weeks ago she had studded snow tired mounted on the car. I don't think the tires are the issue. But perhaps the installation process may have played a part since the care was placed on a lift.
View 8 RepliesI have a 2014 IS 250 F Sport and in less than 500 miles, the car has this "LOUD" clunking/thumping noise coming from the rear when I pass a bump or uneven road. Brought it back to the dealership but the Lexus specialist/technicians said this noise is the characteristic of the vehicle which of course it cannot be a characteristic of the vehicle. This is not the 1st Lexus vehicle I own.
Also, navigation/radio shuts off while the car is in motion? Dashboard just turns dark (completely blackout) while the car is in motion??
I have a 2005 Camry XLE. Since past few months I have started hearing a strange grinding / thumping noise from the front passenger side wheel. It can be clearly heard at slow speed and almost sounds like the wheel is lopsided and is rubbing against something. As the car picks up speed, the frequency picks up and the sounds disappears eventually.
So, I figured it must have been because the car had hit a curb few months ago and must have bent the rim. I had the wheels looked at while getting rotation and balancing done and was told that there is no rim damage. The sound went down a little after rotating the wheels but is still there. The mechanic doesn't think that it is the bearing because the sound disappears after moderate speeds. So, trying to figure out what could be causing the noise?
I'm under the understanding that my 03 explorer AWD tranny level can't be checked. Is this true. Well anyway , went on a 1000 mile round trip. Left for work following morning and truck wouldn't shift to 2nd without letting off the gas. OD lite was flashing. Got to work. Left work and goes into 2nd fine but now it wont hit 3rd till I let off the gas. No OD lite flashing but now check engine lite is on. Watzz up. I would like to check the fluid....but see above.

Installed it and when I started the car there was no boost at all. I searched for any leaks and nothing. I get a code p132b.
View 7 Replies04 explorer, When traveling under throttle the thing runs smooth, when letting off accelerator, there's a rumble from, what seems like, the rear of the vehicle, when I press the accelerator, it almost "clunks" and acts fine once it's under acceleration again. Should I suspect my rear end gears going out, or something simple like a universal joint.

Also, grease from upper ball joints half-way down steering knuckle arm, so probably dry? Thinking of replacing everything up frt. incl. hub bearings while have all apart and be done w/ it. Notice in FSM that this means replacing both upper and lower control arms that come w/ bushings and ball joints installed. Parts very pricey even w/ discounts ( 27% at myLparts), somewhere around $3,500 +/-, incl. rr. shocks. Rather cry once and hopefully get get another 90K +/- mi. w/o problems. I've always gone w/ OEM parts in past and probably paid the price, but since I'm doing all the work, hopefully evens out in long run.

Then we heard a rattling noise. Sounded like it was near the front passenger tire. After about another 10 minutes, the check engine light went on and the cruise control was disabled. On our way home (after we stopped to ski), the rattling wasn't so loud, car seemed to be driving fine, but CEL is still on. deas what this might be? Is it safe to drive it about 15 miles to the closest AutoZone to get the code? Or straight to an independent shop?

View 2 RepliesHad drivegear springs installed about 7 months ago or so and recently the front started making a swoosh sound when going over bumps. Took it into the dealership and they told me they tightened some chassis bolts. So I take it home. Problem is still there. So I go back and let them know. I go for a ride along with the manager and he tells me the noise is normal. So now it's not a matter of it being covered under warranty but more of is it a problem at all?
I remember someone telling me it might of been the control arm bushings. I need rubber ones or something. How I should approach this so my car doesn't sound like a 1980's chevy.
I was driving the other day, and all of a sudden it started with this horrible knocking sound. I have never heard the sound before. I remember back in the day, with a 67 buick rivera, that if the oil got low, the engine would knock, and this kind of sounded the same, but more high pitched and clicky. I checked the oil first thing and there is plenty in there - in fact, I had just checked and put oil in it about two weeks before.
I have not always kept up with the oil changes, and sometimes the oil level was pretty low. My sons tell me that the sound seems to be coming from the top of the engine, and it's probably toast, a rod knock. I parked it, and figured i will get it looked at in a few months, when I'm better able to pay for diagnostics.
About a month ago my Touareg started making loud rumbling noises at highway speeds. It sounds and feels (it makes the whole truck vibrate) like you're driving on the "wake me up bumps" that are on the shoulder. Some times it last for 30 seconds and other times it goes on for the whole trip. It's driving me crazy; however the dealer can't reproduce the problem so they think I'm crazy. It doesn't do it all the time, however, the only common symptom is it happens at speeds above 65 mph. It has happened when it the car was cold and hot, cruise on and off and variable highway speeds. The transmission was replaced right after I received the car due to a malfunction, so the dealer doesn't think this could be a second faulty transmission.
