I have smoke coming out of rear passenger tire. Also it's making noise like rubbing sound, sometimes it squeaks loud when taking off and coming to a stop. How to fix and what to look for?
View 14 RepliesI have a 99 F150 4x4 (5.4) 173k miles. I bought the truck from family about 6 months ago and from time to time if you stepped on the brake pedal to hard (not locking up, but pretty hard) it would feel like the passenger rear tire would lock up. He said that there was an issue with the automatic adjuster on that side. Here lately the ABS light on the dash has been coming on every couple of days, of course on the next restart it's off. Could these two issues be related?
View 3 RepliesI'm losing coolant have, excessive white smoke coming from the exhaust, and rough idle. Doesn't over heat or even try to overheat. The oil fill cap looks brownish white. It drives fine other than extremely rough idle. I know how to check a blown head gasket with the combustion gas test.
From what I've read blown head gaskets on 4.6 fords are fairly uncommon but a blown intake gasket is fairly common. How can I tell the difference?
Obviously its not a good thing, but this seems a little severe for a truck that hasnt had any issues prior. The truck is a 1998 F150 4.6 and was running just fine until POP!! A puff of grey smoke coming from the throttle body and followed by (obviously) a rough idle. So basically, I know that any metal fragments were directly sucked into the intake and based on the size of the chipped area (roughly 1.5cm). I am wondering what type of internal damage this would (or already has) caused.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2003 Honda Civic coupe that is making a interesting noise. When making a hard left turn with some speed, an intermittant rubbing noise is coming from the rear right tire and wheel. I cannot duplicate that noise turng right at any speed.
One more fact, the right rear and left front tires lose 5-10 psi of air a week. They were filled yesterday, so they should be around 30 psi still (door sticker recommendation). New tires put on last summer by previous owner- not sure if they were losing air at that rate before the new treads or not.
I plan on buying a used wheels to replace current ones to hopefully remedy the losing air situation!
Was having some clunking sounds coming from the rear end on the old F150. Bro in law said it was lack of gear lube and the rear diff grinding from the start. Wasn't the issue. U - joints are shot and causing the issue. My question is I marked the drive shashshaft and flange with a sharpie but it rubbed off on the flange from free spinning the rear end seeing if the issue was there. From the drive shashshaft to the rear diff flange does the flange need to be marked or no? I did scribe with a nail the transfer case and marked the drive shaft with sharpie. So is the flange being marked important or just the bracket with the u-joint? Would've used soap stone but don't have any on hand.
View 5 RepliesI have a 1998 F-250 LD 4x4 with 462,000 km. I have been hearing for some time quite a drone coming from the rear axle. I am guessing the wheel bearings are due, as both front ones have been replaced, but never the rear. More about the noise, I hear it come to life as I gain speed. The faster, the louder. If I decelerate the noise is still present, but volume significantly decreases. Should I change the oil and friction modifier and see if there's an improvement or go ahead and change both bearings too?
View 7 RepliesI just had my van inspected and tires rotated...van sits for a few days then travels 20 miles and am now smelling something burning and smoke is coming out from front right tire. Other discussions say calipers/pads and that's ok BUT my question is since my van only has @24,000 on it, did the mechanic do something when he rotated my tires? I am a senior citizen and only use my van once a week.
View 6 RepliesMy father's 1997 F150 with the 4.6 two wheel drive, has me stumped again. I have a lot of mechanic knowledge but this one has got me wondering whats going on. Here is the run down. When you are driving down the road, it rides just fine and makes no noises from 0-20 MPH, after about 25 to 35 mph it makes like a metal on metal noise that is coming from the rear, and forces the truck to slow down, when you try to accelerate through this problem it has a bad bang and it wont allow you to speed up anymore, it does not seem like a brake issue (but I could be wrong) since it does not actually pull to one side or the other.
It seems like an equal force trying to stop the truck. I have heard rear ends that were going out and they make clunk noises or whirring noises etc, but its still some what driveable. I have checked the rear end oil and it does have oil in it, and its probably about an inch from the full level (but that shouldnt cause this issue im sure). My father wants a definite answer before we start tearing this thing apart to try and fix it. Since its mostly used to take trash off, and also get the kids down the dirt road to the bus stop.
Our 2002 Ford Windstar has 78k miles. On 6/2/15 we had the brakes replaced. Soon after I noticed a ticking/clicking noise that sounded like it was coming from the right rear tire. It only happened when I braked and then only happened sometimes. It didn't seem to matter if the car was cold or had been running awhile, if I was on flat ground or on a hill, or if I had been going fast or slow. I couldn't predict when it happened. The car always stopped okay. So I took it back to the repair shop, and they made an adjustment and it was quiet. Two days later it started again, so I took it back. They machined the rear drums and the noise was gone. Five days later I hit a rough patch of pavement and when I braked the noise started again. Back to the shop. They had one of the mechanics ride with me. No noise of course. They said to bring it back when it makes the noise. Well, it has made the noise, but only a few times and I can't predict when it will happen. The car runs fine and brakes fine. I trust this repair shop. They've worked on the car in the past.

For about 3 weeks or so i have been having this squeaking noise similar to the noise you hear when your breaks are worn out and you need to replace them. It sounds like it is coming from the right rear tire, i have changed all breaks all the way around and today i finally changed the rear passenger caliper thinking that it was causing the noise but it is still there. I am also driving on my spare which happens to be the same size as my regular tires it just does not have the rim on it.
I also found out that prior to changing the rear passenger tire it was wobbling and i did not know till a friend pointed it out, the rim does have a really minor dent but i am not sure if that was causing it to wobble or if the wobble is what caused the noises to appear. I have been driving the car for about 3 months and it started 3 weeks ago. There is also a clicking noise that i hear but i cant point out if it is coming from that side of the car, i can only hear it when i am driving slow.
Also the squeaking comes and goes, it is not always there and when it is there and i apply the breaks it is still there. I have done some research and a lot of people have a similar problem but the noise will go away when they finally apply the breaks, my noise still remains even when breaks are applied. What it can be, i did a little more research and now i am thinking it can be the ujoints on the driveshaft?

My Explorer is a 1997 with the control trac 4x4 system. It's only purpose in life at the moment is to plow snow and its been doing that quite well. I typically leave it in 4lo all the time. Every once in a while, I will switch it to the other modes to ensure they are all working.
Today I was plowing and it looks like I'm getting nothing, or next to nothing to the front wheels. There is some shudder if the rear tires begin to spin, but the front never spin, or lock up. I can feel/hear the transfer case shift when I change modes between auto/4hi/4lo as I usually do, but the front wheels just are not doing their job. All three modes are not driving the front wheels.
The transmission was rebuilt a few years ago, and it's shifting fine. I'm suspecting the transfer case. Only my OD light is flashing, but it only does that once in a blue moon. I plugged my code reader in and it could not read those codes. I was able to clear the light though.
I've been noticing some (a lot) of oil on the inside of my rear tire. I went ahead and drained my diff fluid to check if the was any left and there was but I replaced it and cleaned the tire (hoping I just drove through something) and it's back again already. I don't know much about axles, what seal usually holds stuff back in there? What parts should I expect to replace other than the seal and any brake components effected? I noticed a creak/crunch coming from that area but seems to crunch with suspension articulation so not sure if it's related but I have the feeling it is.
View 14 RepliesNoticed something weird the other day I was driving into town and noticed it was getting hard to take off like the truck needed more power or like the ebrake was slightly on I get to my aunts house and notice that I can smell and feel heat coming off of the passenger side rear tire so I get closer and notice that the brake is locked up. what could cause this? and another weird thing about a year and half ago this same thing happened to my mother in law as she was driving the truck and me and my father in law replaced the brake caliper and replaced both rotors and pads on both rear tires and I used a good amount of grease on the slide pins so to keep the pins from seizing up. and now it locked up again what could cause this?
View 6 RepliesI just bought a 97 f150 4x4 4.6L v-8 and keep having problems. The check engine light came on saying that it is running too lean. The truck had been sitting for a while so I changed the air filter, maf, and pcv valve. After changing the pcv valve it is now blowing white smoke. What can be causing this to happen?
View 1 RepliesI have 1998 F150 has 305,000 miles on it and its my everyday car runs over a 105 miles a day. I have no oil leak not even a drop however it does burn oil but does not smoke I say about 3 quarts a month. I have been thinking about changing the engine and keeping it as my everyday use . My question how many more miles can I get out of it or should I just wait until she breaks down or change out engine and trany now. Its has the winsdor 4.6 engine. Also I will be changing the transmission as I never change transmission fluid!!
View 4 RepliesAfter tooling around town and a complete warm up cycle for the engine I encountered a problem. The situation is this.... Had to go around a slow poke....waited until traffic had cleared and nailed it. My truck belched out a boat-load of blue smoke from the tail pipe. Could not duplicate this on the return trip to the stealer (Dealer). Needles to say, I am worried about the health of the engine....(no codes popped, or anything else as I had a code reader hooked up) My truck did the blue cloud again with a rev up in park after a cool down but wouldn't do it again, but there was a strong smell of unburned fuel at the tail pipe.
4.6L, 2WD, Sport Package....
Alright so In January had head gaskets done on my truck and when I got it back it Dont have any low end power and I noticed it was using oil. If I let it idle 15 min or so and rev it up it blows out a bunch of blue smoke and smells like oil bad. Been trying to figure out whats going on. Ive only put about 800 miles on it since I got it back for the head gaskets And its burned at least 3 quarts of oil. Its going to the shop on Monday gonna start with compression check and go from there I'm Thinking Its valve seals or a bent valve. But machine shop surface and pressured checked the heads. Truck only has 146000 miles on it shouldn't be having these lined of problem. Its an 03 5.4.....

View 13 RepliesI have a '98 Expedition with 170k, 4WD, 5.4 and auto trans.
I drove me truck home about 15 miles and sat idled for 15 minutes while on the phone. The truck started running rough all of a sudden and then died. I tried to restart it and would crank over, but not ignite. I thought fuel pump, grabbed a can of starting fluid and eventually fired up, but was huffing white smoke. After about 3 minutes, it sat there and purred. No problem, right?....
I dropped it in reverse to back into the driveway, when I put it in drive.....nothing, no forward gears now..? It will start up and run now, but still no forward gears. I have a leaky heater core, but rarely have to add water......and no milkshake in the oil.
Pulled off of the freeway on my way home from a superbowl party and felt some vibrating coming from my rear passenger tire. It's snowing pretty heavily here in the Minneapolis area so I thought it was just snow packed into my rim throwing off the balance. I pull into my driveway and go to look at it and find it flat. TPS indicator light never came on.
Long story short, I'm taking the car in to a dealership in the morning to get a new tire, since it will be covered by my wheel tire protection plan that I got when I bought the car. Also will want them to take test my TPS and fix it when they see it doesn't work.
