I picked up a 2004 F150 a few weeks ago. It has the limited slip 3.73 rear end. During acceleration on turning, I'm feeling quite a bit of chatter out of the rear end. I've read the TSB on it, and I'm wondering how much it'll cost to get the clutchpacks replaced in the rear differential.

View 7 Replies I finally upgraded from my 1998 F150 5.4 to a 2008 F150 Lariat supercrew 4x4 5.4 3v with 83k miles. I've had the truck about a week and have already noticed an issue. During light to moderate acceleration, I notice a slight hiccup in the 30-40 mph range. This "hiccup" is best described as a quarter second dead spot in the throttle. At times, I have noticed an additional hiccup between 20-30 mph that does the same thing. Occasionally, I will also feel a slight vibration on take off. It's important to note that if I accelerate at a quicker pace or really get on it, I can't feel the issue. I have also had a tough time replicating the issue when I deactivated overdrive. Not to say it wouldn't do it, but I really couldn't tell if it was doing it. Also, I've noticed that when I really get on it, It takes maybe a second to catch before accelerating. (From what I've read, that's common for 5.4s though, just thought I'd note it)
I have had spark plug and coil pack issues out of my 1998 model, but they felt different than what this truck is doing. Is it possible that this is the same issue but is manifesting itself differently? I briefly spoke with my mechanic and he seems to think it sounds like a torque converter issue. He checked for codes and none were showing or pending in the computer. Transmission shifts good. Fluid is a pinkish orange color, and there are no metal shavings on the oil dipstick. I started to notice the truck would sometimes shift a little hard into 4th. I took the truck by my mechanic and he rode with me. I was able to replicate the original issue. He told me it felt like something in the transmission. He said that my fluid smelled a little burned to him, but it was still a pinkish orange color. He said he would service the transmission and adjust the bands. The truck has 83k miles so I'm not too worried about a major transmission problem. He said he was fairly certain the servicing would correct the issue. I'm also going to have him put a new set of coils and plugs on as well. Am I missing anything?
Just rejoined this Ford gang after years absence. Used to own "The Muny Pit", a '79 F-150 4WD monster with a '69 429... constantly breaking something. Anyway, where to look on my '08 F-150 XLT 4WD with a 5.4, 83,000 miles. Searched the search bar for my title and found a post on an '00 Expedition describing similar issue than mine... for about 6 months now when I accelerate either from stop or a crawl; forward or reverse; more so when turning, but does do it wheels straight.
Upon initial acceleration I have this horrendous rumble / shudder in the truck, like the grinding metal bearing sound/feeling felt when the pinion bearing went out on my '79 (only felt it seconds before the 9" rear pumpkin exploded). Once rolling it stops. I have checked all wheel bearings.. I have check all the suspension joints... everything looks fine, no obvious issues. The only suspension mod I've done is a 1.5" leveling kit when brand new. On the Expedition two replys suggested changing the transmission/transfer case fluids claiming it cured their vehicles.
This spring I installed a Ford OEM limited slip unit in my 05 F 150. Recently I notice a brief, intermittent shudder when turning right or left from a stop sign. Does not do it all the time. I don't notice this any other time. The Valvoline synthetic oil I used said the Ford additive was not needed. Is this the "nature of the beast", should I be concerned, should I put the additive in anyway?

Based on what I read online and the fact that I pulled a code for a #1 cyl misfire, I assumed that i just need to change the plugs, and I am trying to scheduule that now.
I just read another post about the TC not locking up due to needing the filter and fluid changed and a way to fix that would be to take OD off and see if it still does it.
When I drive with the od off, it does not do it but i am now confused since i got the one code for a misfire.
I am having a minor problem with my 05 F150 Lariat. Under light acceleration going up a slight grade the truck sometimes shudders (vibrates?). If I let off the gas or accelerate slightly it stops. At first I thought it was a feedback loop with the electronic throttle so I had the dealer reflash the computer but that didn't fix it. I've noticed that it happens right about the time the torque converter locks (looking at the tach) and I'm sure it has something to do with torque converter locking up and then disengaging continuously. Funny thing, it seems to happen frequently on the same hill at the same speed. What was done to fix it?

View 4 RepliesThe X has 107K on the clock. I have a 6 quart after market aluminum diff cover installed with Royal Purple 75W-140 synthetic gear oil and no limited slip additive in the gear oil. When I make a left or right turn, I get this vibration like the limited slip clutch pack is engaging then disengaging. It is not a thump or thud but just a subtle vibration. I don't hear any noise but I just feel the vibration. It happens either going forward or backing during a turn and is more noticeable when pulling a load and turning. Going straight down the road I hear no noise and feel no vibration. I thought I would ask before I pulled the diff cover off.
View 5 RepliesOk so I was going to just swap the whole rear end from drum to disk but it looked to be too much difficult;t. So the rear I have has 278,000 miles in it and its starting to make noise we were thinking about swapping the gear from the disk to the drum because the disk rear has 140,000 miles on it. Both have a limited slip. And 3.55 gears but i was thinking about getting 3.73.... So my question is can I swap in 3.73 gears into a rear end with the limited slip from one with 3.55 gears? Or do I need to buy a different limited slip?

View 6 RepliesI recently changed the rear diff fluid on my 1999 F250 Super Duty (180k) It was due plus I was getting some chattering when making turns from a stop. The Diff fluid had about 60k miles on it and seemed to be a little low even though I don't see any leaks. I paid to have it done last time so I can't say what kind of a job they did.
I used Motorcraft diff fluid and 8oz of friction modifier. Two weeks later and about 500 miles, today I noticed on two occasions when turning a moaning sound coming from the rear of the truck. Could this be a sign of too much friction modifier and the cluthes are slipping or is something else going on?
I have 142k miles on my 2005 RX330 AWD. This week I can feel the transmission slip/shudder when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear.
My local transmission guy is pretty reasonable but like most salesmen he's going to say rebuild it the entire transmission in lou of something less invasive.
I am getting ready to do my both differentials and need to know if I have limited slip or not on the rear, what is the best way to tell?

View 1 RepliesI bought my f 350 new from the dealer and have had many of the problems associated with this truck. Now I have a severe shudder while under acceleration when i either let off the gas or increase speed the shudder goes away. My dealer thinks it is injectors but I have little faith. Shudder seems to be rpm consistent and seems to be in the front end. oh yea it idles great and runs great except at that specific range.

View 2 RepliesAbout 6 months ago I bought a '08 GS 350 CPO. Love the car but after a month or two of ownership, on light acceleration 3rd and 4th gears will shudder. The whole car will buck and shake, but if I give it more gas it will smooth out. Doesn't seem to be the engine, I suspect more the transmission. Of course I took it in and they "could not reproduce the problem"... Is this just a normal characteristic of the car?

I recently had to replace the front passenger side Drive axle. That was a piece of cake. However, since then the car has developed a shudder when it comes to stop (felt like the shudder on acceleration that was fixed by the dealer with a reflash). Suddenly it got so bad that it stalls when put into gear with the brake on. It feels like it is not coming out of converter lockup.
When I drained the fluid I replaced it with Valvoline Import multi-vehicle full synthetic (it says it is spiII). I latter added another half quart of Castrol transmax import multi-vehicle (also spIII). Did I screw up my trans? Will a flush work? Or do I just need to replace the trans and torque converter?
I have a 2004 V8 standard suspension Touareg and when I make a turn and turn the wheel all the way to either the right or the left the Touareg feels like the front wheels are skipping and I can feel a shuddering vibration from the steering wheel. I have the Pirellis on it.
