In the 2004-2008 forum there's a lot of topics concerning the camshaft phaser knocking/ticking issue but I don't see much in this forum. Was that issue taken care of by 2009 or do some still have the problem?
View 1 RepliesI have a 2007 F-150 4x4 5.4L. I recently had a problem with my engine. It had the knocking noise thats known for the 5.4. My issue is i replaced the engine (it had 275,000 miles and was a work truck before i bought it) As well as all the timing components including the hydraulic tensioners, new phasers, new guides, new solenoid, and a new camshaft positioning sensor and it still isnt fixed.
View 3 RepliesIt seems that my 09 F150 has developed a troubling noise... I'm looking for any cam phaser. I'm at 116,712mi. 5.4L motor of course.
On cold start, I hear about 2 seconds of "clatter" - sounds like something is "loose" on top of the motor. At hot idle, I hear the classic "diesel" idle, indicative of the cam phaser issue. In gear, the rattle intensifies and is very noticeable around 1000RPM.
Other than the noises, the truck runs great - like new.

Under hood, under hood close up, driver's wheel well, interior, then interior in gear. You'll need to crank the volume to hear the last two.
Best I can tell, this is not an exhaust manifold issue. So, what say you? Cam phasers?
I have a 2010 Ford F150 Lariat with 111000 miles on it and now I have a ticking noise under acceleration only and after reading some stuff on here that makes me believe that it is the cam phasers. The question I have is what kind of damage can this cause? Is this something that I can continue running with and does the noise get worse and if so how much worse?

View 4 RepliesI have a 2010 f150 crew cab with the 5.4 and I've noticed a ticking noise when I drove through town the other day. I got home put the truck in park and the ticking went away but when I put it in drive, held the brake and gave a little gas it came back even though I was not moving at all. What could this be?

View 14 RepliesI just bought a 2010 F150 XLT XTR SuperCab 4X4 with a 4.6L 3V engine. I had a 2003 5.4L and a 2004 V10 before and this new engine seems to be nosier then the older ones I've had. It's a ticking/fluttering type noise I here when I'm standing outside the truck while it is idling. Is it normal for these newer 3V engines to make this noise? My wife has a 2009 Hyundai Santefe and it makes a similar noise just not as loud. Does the 5.4L make a similar noise also?
View 12 Replies2012 F150 6.2L V8... I am at a loss and I know that loud knocking is not a good sign. Two days ago my truck's low oil pressure light started coming on and off, so I pulled over and immediately turned my truck off. I called a friend at a Ford dealership and he asked a mechanic what I should do. He said it could be something as simple as low oil, bad oil sending unit or maybe something serious. So, he said check my oil level if low top it off and see if that fixes the problem. It was low and I topped it off, but the light kept doing the same thing.
Here's my dilemma; my truck wasn't making ANY noises (knocking, whining, etc...), 2 days later which was yesterday I was en route to get new oil/oil filter changed and 24 miles later I'm in a turning Lane and it dies! Will not start, but it tried, so I did not try anymore. I was able to get it into a parking lot and left it for about 4 hours and went to check on it and it started right up and that is when the knocking noise started. I turned it off and checked the oil and the level reads full...
Just had my 2010 F150 in for a loud knocking noise when the truck has warmed up in drive and rpm up to about 800. I can't hear the noise when I disconnect the passenger side vtc selonoid. The Tech who worked on it has recommended replacing the motor. His troubleshooting on the ticket says he removed the coil from the number 4 cylinder and the noise he hears goes away. I just can't see that the motor is bad.

So I have the tick noise at rpm's 800-1000 at drive through, stops, etc. So I did research on it a few months ago and saw that it might be VCT's but should be able to drive. so I drove it waiting to save money and have it go to a shop. well this past weekend while coming home from work my oil light came on the pressure dropped to zero, I was on the highway so I drove about another mile to get off highway and once I got off my truck died. I had it towed to my house and I thought I blew my motor. So I started doing research here and found that the VCT's AND cam Phaser could be bad. so I replaced my VCT on driver side put it all back together it started and loud knock was gone. then after 5 mins it was back very loud knock!
So I shut it down and took apart the passenger side once I got the valve cover off I found the problem.... The bolt that holds the cam phaser in place snapped off and was riding along the camshaft. So I took that out and extracted remaining part of bolt. inspected my camshaft and it was really messed up. so I bought new Phaser and Camshaft. the camshaft just came in today and I am trying to put it back in. but the hole for the pin in the phaser doesn't line up and I cant spin the shaft to make it line up. should I spin the cam phaser? I marked the chain and the phaser is where it should be on chain, but with that bolt snapping off could that have thrown the timing off so my mark is no good? when I lay the camshaft in place it sits perfect and if I just move the phase over 2-3 links it will all fit together. Should I do that?
For 2009 and 2010 f150's with the 5.4L engine, this may apply to you.
About a month back I got some odd vibrations at start-up and while driving and the following codes:
P0345 - Camshaft Position Sensor, Bank 2 (drivers side), circulation error
P0349 - Camshaft position Sensor, Bank 2 (drivers side), circulation Interim.
These codes are common in the previous generation truck for various reasons. In my case, I started trying to troubleshoot with the easiest solutions first.
Checked the battery - fully charged.
Checked/played with the alternator connection and related wiring - looked good.
Checked the oil - it was down at the half mark on the dipstick, so toped it off with synthetic oil.
Cleared the codes, and now have been driving for a month, no issues, no codes!
If these codes come up for other folks, try the easiest on the list first, before bringing to the dealer... these codes can be really hard to solve, but sometimes we can get lucky.
I have a 2010 F150 with the 4.62v. I bought it new in March '11 and have used either MC 5w20 or Pennzoil 5w20 and MC filters, changing every 5k since new. When cold (30deg F or below) the right side has a loud ticking, until it has run for approx 1 minute. Since it is a 2v, cam phasers should not be a part of the problem. What the issue could be. It has just over 36k now, so the powertrain warranty should still be valid.
View 10 RepliesI've had this truck since new and now with 98k miles I just started to hear the dreaded engine ticking. I realize that it is probably the cam phaser's. I have plans to take it to the dealer to get the plugs changed (actually not bad at $225) and now I going to add the ticking noise to the list. How bad will I get killed for two new cam phaser's? Also, since this just started, am I doing any more damage by continuing to drive it? I probably won't be able to take it it for another month.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2000 F250 5.4 that has a ticking/knocking noise. After about 30-60 seconds of first starting the truck in the morning, the ticking/knocking noise appears. It sounds like its coming through the exhaust system and seems to be louder under the front passenger side wheel well. When I rev the engine up, it seems to go away. Does this engine have a cam phaser? Could it be timing chain slap?
View 11 RepliesI have a 2012 F150 5.0 I just bought a couple weeks ago. I have a metallic ticking sound when cold, you can hear it when it idles down, but once driven and hot it is more faint but still there. Its not the injectors, Ive checked that.
Ive seen it posted in various forums but no cause mentioned. Ive had it in to the dealership and they are waiting for Ford to get back to them on what to do but I fear they will say its normal. My friends 2013 doesn't do it at all.
Listen to whole video, wait until the camera was placed on tire and its idled down to hear it. Its louder in real life but not extreme loud.

View 4 RepliesI posted about this back when I bought it back in Feb. and I thought the problem worked itself out but its back. When the temperature drops below 55 degrees or so, coming from the passenger side of the engine there is a chugging or knocking sound, more so when RPMs are high.
I had no issues with it all summer, but now that the temperature is dropping I noticed its back. Is this something I should worry about? What could be causing this? I had the same engine in my 07 and it never did this.
I have a 2011 xlt crew cab with the 5.0 v8.I have noticed a knocking sound at idle, it happens when the engine is cold or at operating temp. It doesn't do it all the time but more often than not.
