Looks like the 1-2 shift fork failed on my 337. This is the 2nd time this has happened to my car in under 100,000 miles of driving (I'm the original owner). The last time was about 3 years ago and the shop I was going to found a used transmission for me. Just curious, how common this happens to our 6-speeds.
View 4 RepliesWell, like the title says, The trans is stuck in third gear, with no other gears, or neutral or reverse. The car is slightly modified 02 GTI 337. APR Chip, Forge TIP, Full 3" exhaust, Greddy FMIC. I definitely drive the car, and had been beating up on it on the highway for a little on my way in to work, then on the way home, down shifted to pass someone, dropped it third, passed them, went to shift to fourth, Shifter moved, felt like it engaged "a gear" and then then i let off the clutch and it was still in third.
I also noticed that unless, I press the clutch in the, the car stays in this gear, even when the shifter is in neutral. I looked at the linkage, and it appears to be functioning. I did some reading around the Vortex and it seems like this might be a shift fork problem. Also, if the trans will be apart, what items should be upgraded?
My 20th Ann. GTI randomly would not go into first or second (they move into place but are just limp there and not catching into the gear) I was told for replacement of new 6-speed transmission and they did not offer any alternatives beside replacing it completely.
I know there is a thread talking about this but I read about the shift fork, or a piece of the shift fork that breaks and this problem fits my exact description. Not much info on what I can do, or at least not specified. What is any cost effective way to get my gears back without completely replacing the transmission? Is there anything I can do to just replace a broken part or are there any alternatives?
Trying to find if any updates to this problem. Just broke a second fork yesterday- only issue I've seen is to simply replace with the same brass fork.
View 10 RepliesI am having this failure in my engine that is making me crazy while I am driving. Yesterday i took my car to a shop to see what was it. my MAF was gone ( I replaced it ) and the failure still going on. The mechanic connected his computer in my car and we went for a ride. HE told me cylinder 1 misfire.
This is what i did.
-change spark-plugs position (failure still)
-change coilpack (failure still)
What can i do ?
-clean injectors
-check for any carbon in valves
So my son's car started to sound like a diesel at idle - a good precursor to timing belt tensioner failure and belt slip, as that happened last night.
When we pulled the belt cover off and turned the dampener pulley by hand the belt was spinning on the bottom gear. When turning the engine over, there was no mechanical noises to indicate valves making contact. Did we get lucky or are the valves just bent out of the way?
How can you tell the valves are bent without taking the head off?
I have a 20th ae Gti. When i bought the car it has installed a EIP Short Shifter and it was working fine, But... Yesterday i cant shift to reverse. So i decide to take a look since that was the first time that i have a problem with that, i thought that was something wrong with the Short Shifter so i decide to see how to install the Short Shifter so i can Re do it all by my self and now i cant Find any gear, No reverse, no 1st no 2d not even neutral.
View 2 RepliesSo i went to start up my car after about an hour of not driving , (previously working fine) and I am not able to shift into reverse 1st or 2nd , ive been looking around and i guess the options are linkage, gear selectors, gear box or tranny.... Its a 337 so its a 6 speed . don't know if that makes a difference
View 2 RepliesYesterday I went to shift from 2nd to 3rd real easy going like 25mph and i couldn't shift out of second. I could wiggle the shifter up and down but barely side to side. Even when moving it up and down it didn't feel like it was engaged in any gear although it was apparent I was stuck in second. Clutch feels normal and still grabs well.
So after driving only in second all the way to my uncles shop I sit at school waiting to see where i can pour more money into the GTI. Its a 20th ae totally stock tranny, I don't know a whole lot about transmissions but possibly the linkage got messed up? I didnt hit any big bumps or anything before it happened.
How to remove the OEM "golf ball" shifter on a 20th AE? I tried everything but it still won't budge. Is there a trick to removing it? Is it a tight press fit or does it screw on?
I have the latest edition of the Bentley repair manual and it does not cover this shifter knob.
I was looking through the DIY and I couldn't find one that just removes the knob it self. I know its all the same steps to remove everything but everyone just swapped the boot and everything. I want to keep my boot and just change the knob to a solid glass ball.

View 9 RepliesI had my shift fork and 1 and 2 gear synchros replaced. Whenever i shift into second it doesnt feel as smooth as first. when i hold the clutch longer and put it into second it feels smoother.

He says that 6th grinds when you go into it, it has no problem getting in but it makes a noise when you shift in, best guess is that its a synchro problem. This would not bother me so much if this wasn't an 8 year old limited edition sporty hatchback with a transmission unique to the standard gti.
So, I just installed a ESE cold air intake on my gli...and when i shift it sounds like air is coming out of the intake. make sense? is this normal? Also, how high is the risk of a hydrolock?
View 15 RepliesSo the other day was driving my car... And he said reverse quit working. I'm nowhere near my car right now, but it sounds like the same thing that it had done for me a few times. Basically, the gear shift won't go into the slot for reverse, and even first is hard to get into sometimes. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't... My car's a 337 with an O2M transmission.
View 3 RepliesSometimes (most of the time), when I shift from first to second, its either hard to do or it "pops" into gear. There's not like a grinding gear but it sounds like it is hitting something as it goes into gear. If I go 1st to 2nd while stopped, it goes in nice and smooth. It sort of feels like how you can't shift into 1st while you are moving slowly, you have to push on it a bit and then it finally pops in.
View 8 RepliesPulling into work today and backing into my parking spot, a fellow employee noticed something odd about my front wheels, so he hopped in my car so I could see the issue.
From a dead stop accelerating forward, the front wheels shift a few inches to the rear, and same thing when backing up from a dead stop they shift to the front. Both sides are doing this evenly. I haven't thrown it on the lift yet but I was thinking a possibly bad dogbone mount. The car has 133K on it and the bone has never been touched.
It all started after it being cold outside it's hard to shift into second gear when i first start up the car, and then after a couple shifts like that i get a notchy shift. after a while of driving it all disappears.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2002 1.8 Turbo VW GTI. Lately I've noticed that the car would hesitate slightly when slowing down. It would go up to at least 5000 RPM's or higher before it shifted over. The hesitation when slowing down and accelerating tend to happen when I drive. What to do, I went to the vw company they said if i want to change the transmission would cost me ~6k$ and f*ck me twice if if am paying 6k on a 2002 car.
