I presently drive a 1996 GEO PRISM. My airbag light stays on while driving, cuts off when engine is turned off. Apparently I have a short somewhere.Which means that the codes can not be reset.

Recently, I replaced a steering box in this vehicle. After the job was done, I noticed the "AIR BAG" light stayed on continuously. Is this just a coincidence?
I have a 1996 Geo Metro LSI 1.3L, automatic trans.
ISSUE #1
The airbag light will not go off. I replaced the air bag control module under the shifter console and the front impact sensor near the hood latch. No effect. What is my next step? I was thinking of replacing the steering column sensor/module.

Note: I also replace the ECU to no avail. I did this because the check engine light keeps coming on. I clear the code, but "low emission threshhold) code keep returing. Does this mean my catalytic converter is gone, or could it be the O2 sensors?
Got an air bag code 41. Comes on and flashes the code a number of times, then goes off for the rest of the ride. It is a 96 Arerostar, XLT, 4LV6. From what I read it is a short someplace. Where are the crash sensors and how do you check them for "shorts"? I don't understand much about the whole system.
View 12 RepliesI have a 1996 Geo Prizm, with about 126K miles. I bought it last May, at around 120,000 miles and had no problems with it until recently, other than some minor issues with the power steering in November. In November, it started making a squeaking or grinding noise whenever I went around a sharp turn. It turned out that the power steering fluid was slightly low, so I added more and that was the end of that problem. But I also found out that the previous owner had put the wrong kind of power steering fluid in. Starting about 2 weeks ago, the car started making a squeaking or squealing noise. There would be no squeaking when I started the car, but then it would start when I turned. It is only audible when the engine is idling, and I'm not sure if it is squealing at other times, too.
I figured it was probably one of the belts, probably the power steering belt. However, I checked it and it seemed to be tight enough and did not appear cracked or glazed. A friend of mine who knows much more about cars than I do also checked the power steering, alternator, and A/C compressor pumps for me, and he said they seemed fine. About the same time the squeaking started, I noticed the car seemed to be burning a lot more fuel than usual. I have filled up the gas tank twice since then. Typically, throughout this winter, the car has gotten 33-36 miles per gallon. But on the last tank, it only got 25 MPG and it got 29 MPG on the tank before that. There has been no change in my driving habits to explain this. The engine also sounds slightly rough when it is idling, almost like a diesel engine, but no louder than the car usually sounds. My friend who checked the belts listened to it when it was idling, and he thought he heard a slight knocking sound, which I heard too.
I noticed no decline in performance: the car accelerates just as quickly as ever, and performs the way it always has. The power steering seems to function just fine, despite the squeaking. I thought that perhaps there was something wrong with the timing belt, and that might explain both the squeaking and the increased fuel burn. But I looked online at a few websites, and it sounds like timing belts usually don't show any symptoms when they are wearing out, they usually just fail without much warning. Also, when I bought the car, the previous owner said the timing belt was replaced at around 90K, so it should be fine for a while. I am at a loss as to what might be wrong with the car. I wonder if the squeaking and the increased fuel burn are caused by the same problem, or if there might be separate problems causing each.
I pulled the wrong fuse, and now my air bag light is flashing a 5 2 pattern, and then stays on continuously.
it's a 96 OBD II - so I don't think I can do the "short the 2 pin gray connector" trick, or can I?
I pulled the right kick plate, and see the AIR BAG module, etc the fuel inheria switch mounted on the firewall, but no sign of that 2 prong plug....
so, how does one reset or clear this 52 code - I know that it was a result of me pulling that fuse, as the light was perfect before, and no issues.
I googled this topic, and still can't seemed to find this... will I need to take it to a dealer to have them flash the Air Bag Code?
The warning light on the dash of my '96 ranger 4.0, auto with 233k miles started coming on. The only thing I have done recently was to replace my battery. Just trying to figure it out.
View 7 RepliesLast night, my 2008 Prius was hit from the rear. The bumper was damaged as well as a few starches on the hatch. However the latch for the hatch was move forward so the hatch no longer latches. Also during the collision, my daughter's heavy backpack was throw against the back of the passenger seat with enough force to hurt her back.
The airbag warning light remains on along with the dash indicator saying the airbag is off. Does mean all the airbags are disabled? Can this be reset? The car will be professionally repaired but I still need to drive it until I can get it repaired.
Every time I start the truck, the Passenger Side Airbag light is on, which is saying the airbag is turned "OFF." I have to push the button to turn the light off, which turns the airbag "ON." How do I reset this to where the airbag is "ON" until I turn it "OFF?"
View 8 RepliesIt was driving me crazy that the red triangle warning light (master warning light) flashed for only a split second, once per day, two days in a row.
I drive 100 miles per day. My 2004 Prius has 136K miles.
It turned out to be low motor oil level, 1.75 quarts low.
My car is burning about one quart every 5K miles which probably is within the normal range for a 136K car.
I just pulled error code B1944 from my 96 Explorer. It says

I found the airbag diagnostic module (in passenger cowl area) and checked for loosed wire, nothing found. Where the loose ground wire is located? I checked under the seat (didn't do a through job, but looked).
The ABS light on my Chevy Prizm 98 comes on when I start the car and then turns off in a few seconds. The last few days the light does not go off the entire time the car is running. The light does not flash it just stays on. It's never done this before. Does this mean I have an issue with my brakes? I replaced the front brakes last year but I'm fearing/dreading rear brake replacement. I have no signs that they need to be replaced but am wondering if the ABS light is telling me I'm reaching the rear brake replacement day.

The vehicle did not pull, drag, or show any sign of tire problems, and when I checked the pressure on all four tires the next morning they were fine.
View 13 RepliesSo I was leaving work when my car starting beeping and the coolant low light flashed. I shut the car off and popped the hood to find my coolant level almost to the bottom of the reservior. I figured I would just keep an eye on the temp as I drove home and it stayed right at 190 just like from day one. I took it to the dealer and they told me the water pump was leaking. I just turned 4k miles on the way there!! What gives? He said it was not uncommon for the pump to start a leak, but was pretty uncommon to leak so soon. He said it is probably due to a bad cast of the pump. I really like this car and I hope it is not a sign of things to come.
View 14 RepliesI parked my 2010 gti at work this morning, walked away, hit the lock button, and noticed a red light on the drivers door that flashed rapidly then kept on blinking steadily indefinitely. i never noticed that before! so... what is that? the alarm? this may be REALLY dumb, but I did not know this car had an alarm!

At 10:30pm last night, I picked my wife and bro-in-law up from the Logan airport, and on the way to drop BIL at his house, I saw a brief whisp of steam/smoke rise from the passenger side hood/wheel-well when idling at a top-light. I exclaimed that the car was smoking, but BOTH my wife and BIL insisted that we had been stopped over a steam grate. (In 70 degree weather? I puzzled, but since BOTH said that had been the case...).
A few minutes later, the check-engine light flashed (three times, I think) and then went off. I drive with an OBD ScanTool attached on the dash, so I immediately switched it to scan the codes, but it reported "clear" / no codes! Either immediately before or immediately after, the car lost accelerating power for 1 or 2 seconds (at most), but then resumed normal driving. No other dash lights were on, though I did not look at the temp gauge.
I am a former chef and professional cook, and have a VERY sensitive sense of smell-- there was NONE; I watched attentively, and the absence of further smoke/steam seemed to support the unseasonal steam-grate hypothesis. I had also picked up the car within the last 24 hours from THE HONDA DEALERSHIP, who I had asked to look everything over to ensure another 6 months of problem-free driving. (I rejected their offer of a $249.00 "triple flush" of transmission, brakes, and pwr steering.) We have otherwise had zero problems with the transmission or cooling-- the car is old, but maintained reasonably well and driven less that 5000 mi / year. Boston driving, but not aggressive or 19 years old!
No further thought, as all seemed okay except for the brief "blip", and pregnant wife, brother-in-law, two dogs, and I all wanted to get home.Drove the 2ish miles to our apartment, with no further blips. At a stoplight about 3 blocks from home, a LOT of smoke/steam started coming out from the hood. Still no lights or OBD codes! At that point, I pulled over within 5 seconds, and noticed that the temp was pinned or nearly so (If there is supposed to be a light on the gauges, I had it all the way dimmed). Looking under the hood, the spray pattern on the hood insulator made it easy to find the split in one of the hoses connected just under the distributor (about 1.25in OD; I'm guessing coolant or transmission, based on the symptoms??).
While waiting for a tow-truck (since I wasn't even sure if it would do any damage to drive the remaining blocks to my driveway), and after things had a chance to cool a bit, my wife restarted the engine for a second so I could check if any additional fluid came out of that split, but none did. Once the temp was back down towards the low end in 20ish minutes, I drove the car about one block so I could stop blocking traffic-- it drove fine, and the temp didn't visibly rise in that 200 yards. Still, the CEL was not on (or flashing) during startup or while running, and there were NO OBD CODES.
Check engine light flashed for a very brief period, car ran very rough, and then check engine light (exhaust system malfunction) stayed lit. Took to dealer this AM and service advisor asked that I bring it back on Monday morning (loaner promised) but in the meantime, I could continue driving it unless the engine light started flashing. Car is now running okay, but last night it seemed to be running on only 6 or 7 cylinders. Only 93 or 94 octane gas is used and I've owned enough German cars to know how the gas cap should be tightened. Seemed like an oxygen sensor malfunction last night but now I'm not certain.

View 9 RepliesThe O/d light flashed on then off, a few miles later my 06 v6 all wheel drive just coasted to a stop, no noise or anything else. The engine light is on. The trans oil does not smell burnt. The park works but absolutely nothing for the other gears. I drained the tran fluid, 1 gallon came out. Put back in one gallon of new but it is way high on dipstick, the pump seems to not circulate the oil. My car only has 75k on it. What to do next?

Got out of the car (2007) and locked it with the remote. The alarm light flashed quickly multiple times, almost like something was wrong, door not closed tight, etc. The doors locked, but it would not give me the audible beep that it normally does. Went around and opened and closed all doors and trunk to make sure they were closed tight, and they were.
I was driving my car when suddenly I felt a huge shudder and my engine light flashed on. I turned a corner to head into a parking lot and as I accelerated my car seemed to be jerking like it was cutting out. I parked and tried revving it and it sounds all deep and gurgly not smooth. What could be wrong and is it safe to drive the 5 miles back to my house.
