Golf/GTI VI :: 2012 - Cranks Up And Then Sputters Out - Keep Getting Waning Messages

May 12, 2012

Well, after owning 4 other VW's, this one has left me "stranded". I bought my 2012 Autobahn GTI back in September and it had been absolutely problem free up until now. I have the APR flash and Carbonio intake as my only modifications for reference.

I drove over to my girlfriend's house yesterday around 5:30pm, had no issues or anything up until this point. I get into my car around 10:30pm, ready to go home and push the starter. The car cranks up, then sputters out. This has actually happened once or twice before when I pushed the starter too quickly, so I chalked it up to that. I push the starter again, I get a click, and then nothing. A ton of warning lights come on, I get a couple warning messages come up, one about an error with the ESC, and one about the adaptive lighting system. The car's fan turns on, as if the car was running.

I try to start the car a few more times without any luck, and keep getting the same warning messages. I then got out of the car, locked the doors and let the car go to sleep. I wait 15 minutes and try starting the car again, still can't start. At this point I'm pretty much ready to throw in the towel, but I decided to disconnect the battery for a few minutes, hoping that when I reconnect I'll be able to start it. It still didn't work. At this point I know I'm going to have to take it to the dealer, so I try to put the car back into stock mode. I couldn't even do that.

I ended up having to call roadside assistance. To add to my frustration, I requested a flat bed and instead a front-wheel lift one came. I had my car towed to the dealer, had my gf follow the tow truck to the dealer and filled out the night drop off form and left my key.

This morning I call the service department, trying to inquire about my car and the service adviser tells me "your car has severe electrical issues and we are not going to be able to diagnose them today." He asked me if I had any performance software on the car, and I tell him that this is my 5th VW that I've owned, and that every one has had the same APR software on it. I had my car flashed back in September or October, and that I've never had an issue with it with any car. The service adviser then tells me that this is going to have to go to his manager to write off on it if they determine this is caused by my flash or not.

Now I'm stuck without a car, at least through Monday. I asked for a service loaner and they told me they had none and that since they are closed on Sunday, the soonest I might be able to get one is Monday. I just started a new job and have no vacation time saved up, so the timing of this is certainly not ideal. I know that I assumed responsibility by getting the flash, but I've got my fingers and toes crossed that they don't point the blame on the flash and make me pay out of pocket for this.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Cranks Up Fine But Sputters To A Start

My 03 GTI 1.8 is having start issues. It cranks up fine, but it sputters to a start. It doesn't idle high and fall down to the 850 mark like normal, it just lugs itself into low idle. I have to then throttle it until it stops sputtering and I have a smooth rev. Then after that, the car runs fine. I can stop it and start it up again fine when it's warmed up. I have checked multiple things already.

-The Ignition coils are in excellent condition

-Spark plugs are normal, but not exactly perfect

-Fuel pump works fine

-Battery was tested and is clean and good

-Throttle Body is clean (at least to the eye, Im cleaning it next)

-Oil was changed when I changed the sensor along with filter.

I should mention I changed the crankshaft position sensor a month ago. The block at least from under the car is filthy, but I don't know if that affects anything.

I had a check engine light, so I got its codes read (I'm out rn, but when I get home I can show you) and decided to just take it to a shop. When I took it, the light went away, decided to start as normal, and the shop just charged a huge fee for the diagnostic and nothing was fixed. I really need to know what to do with this, I daily it every day and its starting to bother me a lot now.

Sonata NF (2006-10) :: Cranks Sometimes Longer Than Normal And Sputters A Bit Before Fully Starting

I have a 2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS 4 Cylinder with roughly 100k miles. The car runs great, shifts great, drives smooth. The only issue I have is starting the vehicle. When turning the key the car cranks sometimes longer than normal and sputters a bit before fully starting. I feel somewhat of a jolt like the engine is firing but its not what I call smooth. The other day it cranked longer than normal started for 1/2 a second then died and I had to turn the key again to start. I have already replaced the spark plugs and air filters. A while back we had the fuel filter/pump replaced but I'm not sure what else to do considering that the car runs fine otherwise. I read something about an EGR valve and maybe it's a vacuum hose?...

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Occasional Hard Start / Engine Cranks Strong But Fails To Catch And Then Sputters

My truck's been having an occasional hard start, meaning the engine cranks strong but it fails to catch and then sputters. The 2nd start attempt usually fires up with no issues and then runs perfectly otherwise.

MPG's haven't changed, fuel filter was changed 15K ago. Air filter is clean. Plugs were changed about 10K ago. I always use Shell/Chevron gas. MAF sensor looked clean when I took it out so I didn't do anything to it.

This is starting to happen more frequently, maybe once every few weeks and I get a feeling it's the start of something. I've found myself waiting a few seconds for the fuel pressure gauge to come up before turning the key to start reliably. In the past, I could simply flick the key and it fires up the first time.

I see posts talking about the fuel pump module above the spare tire. What are symptoms of that going bad? Any pending codes that might be stored?

I'm about to get myself a scanner since I need one sooner or later. Which specific PID's to check while debugging this?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2001 F350 Hard To Start / Cranks For A While / Sputters And Dies

2001 F350 7.3 ... Below 35 degrees, truck is hard to start. Cranks for a while, sputters, dies. Repeat a couple times, finally starts running rough, surging and loping for 10-15 seconds before it settles down and runs smoothly. Recently had all glow plugs replaced. Next cold start didn't show much improvement (not as bad as sometimes, but wasn't very cold either).

Surfing here and other forums, I see suggestions about letting glow plugs heat longer after WTS light goes out. Some suggest as long as 60 seconds. In the past, I have tried waiting a little while longer after light goes out, or turning key off/on and letting it cycle again. But I've never really timed how long I was waiting.

We're having a warm spell right now, so I can't do much testing. But yesterday morning was about 30. I timed the WTS light and it went out after 10 seconds. I waited another 20 seconds.. about 30 seconds total. Starting seemed a little better than usual, and there was about 1 second of roughness before it settled down.

I need to do more cold weather testing to be sure, but it does seem like it might be better to wait longer than I have been.

On the other end of the scale, I saw a comment that glow plug cycle is dependent on oil temp, and they don't come on at all if oil temp is above 40. Is this correct? If so, is there any good reason to wait to start in warm weather? I'm usually pretty diligent about waiting for the light regardless of weather, but the truck doesn't seem to object if I get impatient and start it sooner in warm weather. If the glow plugs aren't even on, why wait?

Should I just totally ignore the light, and wait for some interval (or not at all) based on a semi-educated guess about how much glow plug time might be necessary for the current temp?

Camry 2012+ :: Disable Messages (Phone Connection Successful) When Using Backup Camera

How to disable those really useful messages like "phone connection successful" when using the backup camera?

Being sarcastic but I think those messages are actually a safety hazard when using the back up camera since they just pop a take up a lot of screen real estate that I would rather see used to see if I'm about to hit some car or pedestrian.

Camry 2012+ :: 2015 XLE Hybrid And IPhone 6 Plus - Voice Activated System To SEND Text Messages

I just upgraded my 2010 Camry XLE to the 2015 XLE Hybrid this weekend. Couple of issues... How to get the voice activated system to SEND text messages? I can receive and view them through the car display, but can't get them to respond. I get through all the prompts and then upon sending it stops and says it's not supported.

Second, what I need to get for my iPhone 6 Plus in order to use the built in Qi wireless charger that came with my car? Also, where can I get whatever it is I need to attach to my phone?

Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2012 F350 - DEF Error Messages / Shutter And Knocking Noise

Just bought a 2012 F350 6.7 4x4 in the beginning of March. After about 500 miles the "Exhaust Fluid System Fault - In 50 miles, speed limited to 50 mph" message displayed. So first thing that occurred to me was maybe it was low on DEF, so I added approximate 1.5 gallons as it had some already in there. I also called the dealer who said "well it just needs to be driven on the highway" hmmm, that sounded weird but I did it anyways. After that I started the truck and the message was gone. I thought that fixed it. - Nope, at about 1480 miles I got the same error message again.

So after getting the message again I just kept driving and the message went away. I thought ok. Yeah right! Now in the past few weeks I have been noticing that the truck almost wants to stall and begins to shudder when going over a slight incline and shifting from 5th to 6th at about 45mph. When I accelerate it makes a knocking noise. If I let off the accelerator, let it slow down, it downshifts into 5th and I then accelerate and it goes away.

And today... I decided to go for a nice ride. After about 10 minutes of driving I get the ole "Exhaust Fluid System Fault" error again. Crap! Again, I keep driving and after another 15min - I get that shutter and knocking noise. Anyway I drove until the the truck displayed "Speed limited to 50mph on next restart. I just kept driving and the error message mysteriously disappeared again.

Tiguan :: 2012 2.0 TDi Misfire And Sputters Then Stalls On Startup

I have recently purchased a 2012 facelift Tiguan diesel and it has a running fault. When starting the engine, 50% of the time it starts fine, 50% of the time it starts with a "misfire" and sputters for a short while (5-6 seconds) then stalls. If you Rev it a bit while it is sputtering then it clears the sputter and doesn't stall. It doesn't matter if it's hot or cold. Once it's running fine then the misfire never returns until you shut off the engine and then try to restart. The start stop also fails to cut in and I'm wondering if this could be linked. It had a new battery and alternator fitted a few months ago but a non start stop battery was fitted. This has now been changed for the correct battery but both problems still persist.

Golf/GTI VI :: Dash Flashes And Throw Half A Dozen Error Messages From ESP To ABS To AFS / Headlight

2010 GTI. Just got back from a business trip, hasn't been started for a week. Turn key, just clicks at me. Dash flashes and threw up half a dozen error messages from ESP to ABS to AFS/headlight. Battery seems fine. I, unfortunately, do not have a windows laptop handy currently so cannot hook up vag-com. Does this sound like a starter? ECU? I do have APR stage I and I was NOT able to access via the cruise control set function which has me worried that somehow it has engaged lock out mode? At this point, I appear to be headed for flatbed, dealer and major wallet damage.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2005 - Cold Start - Chokes / Sputters Like It Isn't Getting Enough Gas

So my new problem is cold engine starts If it's mildly cold out like 30-40 F or 0-10C and has been sitting awhile the car won't start on the first couple of tries. It tries to start but I guess chokes/sputters out like its not getting enough gas. Warm engine it starts instantly.

I put a bottle of gumout regane fuel system cleaner in the tank hoping its a dirty fuel system seeing it feels like it chokes out on gas during the cold start. I'm about half way done that tank and was going to add another bottle on the next tank.

I'm worried about the cold winter approaching and found out issue 8001 today that the oil pan heater is ripped off with broken wires and missing cover.

Hyundai - Elantra :: 2012 - Cranks But Drops Out When Going To Start

I have an 2012 Hyundai Elantra. I've been having an intermittent issue with startup. When I go to start the car it cranks and just when you'd expect it to start it just drops out. I'm not letting up off the key too early, this happens as I'm still turning the key. All the dash lights stay on. When I try it again it starts right up. I did mention it to the dealer last time it was in and they said they looked it up and discovered the cable to my starter was loose so they tightened it. Clearly that hasn't fixed the problem.

Golf/GTI VI :: 2011 - Fuel Starvation - Sputters And Lose Power On Turns

I use my 2011 GTI for track days and have done hundreds of laps with no issues. Yesterday, I got out on the track for the first session and almost immediately I got what has to be fuel starvation on long right-hand high speed turns. The car sputtered and lost power exiting the turn and would return to normal once it got going straight again. The only way I could avoid it was to feather the throttle, which of course doesn't do much for lap times. At that point the tank was about half full, so between sessions I filled it up. With the tank full, there was no problem, but it returned when the tank got down to about 3/4. I filled it up again, and once more it was fine for a while, but the problem returned, this time with about 7/8 of a tank, so I gave up. I drove home (about 100 miles) with no trouble at all.

I know that the fuel pick up is on the right side, so it makes sense that the problem would occur on long right-hand turns. Is it possible that the in-tank pump is getting weak, or that maybe something happened to the baffles in the tank? I have another track day in a month, so I need to get to the bottom of this.

Elantra MD (2010-15) :: 2012 Cranks But Won't Start - P Shows Up On Dash

So I'm not new to fixing this car but I'm now stuck. It is not the inhibitor switch, I had that replaced, and the car cranks so it is not the problem. In addition, the "P" shows up on the dash. Since the car cranks, its not the battery, it is showing 12.25V.

I am afraid it is the fuel pump. Looking for the specs for the fuel pump such as resistances/ voltages? Sometimes when it cranks, I believe it ignites for half a second and then dies. Then it cranks with no ignition, then it sounds like its dying, then it ignites every once in a while.

Similar to this: [URL] ..... but without the nastiness at 0:08 where they turn off the car mid crank.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 01 - Car Only Cranks, Won't Start

About a month ago I went to start my car and it started up and died and now it won't start at all. All it does is crank and crank and crank. My vagcom say j271 relay open circuit . so I replaced the 428 relay and it still doesn't start. I'm also not getting any epc or cel light with the key in the on position which is strange to me. But if I swap the 428 relay with the 100 relay right next to it I get all the dash lights like I'm suppose to but as soon as I try to start it the two lights go out and won't come back on until I pull the relay out and put it back in. I hate obd2 so much sometimes.

Golf V R32 :: 2008 - Cranks But Won't Start?

I have a 2008 r32 that was always 100% reliable until now. One owner, no wrecks, 90k miles, all services done by the dealer and the car is in perfect condition-except it won't start. I noticed symptoms a few weeks ago - a little longer cranking time to catch and then it slowly got worse. More tires at cranking until it would catch and run. Had it to the local dealer- 3 Rivers VW, they checked it out and said there were no codes -they said after talking to VW tech to disconnect the battery to "reset" the system.

It worked for two days and then it completely died- I think their "repair" ($200 in diagnostic time) was a waste. Two days later complete zero-cranks but won't start- flat bedded to dealer again this time they have the car for ten days! First they replace the ignition switch (said it was worn/loose) , then the battery ground strap in the trunk- said it showed to much resistance (4.5 ohms), they then called and said it still wasn't starting right-need to keep it for another day. Last they replaced a relay - part number 1KO-951-253. They declared it fixed! Car started for ONE day now nothing again. Searched - crank sensor, fuse, coil packs, etc- but no solid leads.
