I have a 01 1.8T and I'm looking for a little more rumble and idle noise currently my set up is a 3 inch downpipe cat less and a resanator delete into a stock muffler with modified tips, I had the downturn cut out and ran it straight out the back. Anyways my question is what muffler would you recommend that gives a nice idle and aggressive acceleration with my current set up ( the 3 inch downpipe and res delete).
View 3 RepliesI've searched but can't find what my problem is , ON idle when clutch is not depressed loud ticking noise , but when I push the clutch in it goes away . Also the ticking noise will get louder if I accelerate . ONLY Im first gear will I hear a loud grinding noise which means I have to quickly switch into second . Sound similar to something being dragged along a fence . Again the grinding sound I'm first will only happen if I'm giving it gas. Car has 325,000 km . Something with the transmission ?
View 1 RepliesI swapped transmissions in an 01 vr6 glx automatic car. The car will start and run perfectly until it reaches operating temperature. Once it hits 190 f it shuts down and will only start again if u wait a few minutes. It has me stumped. I have unpluged the coolant temp sensor, and Have checked for vacuum leaks and loose connections but no luck.

View 4 Replies2007 Grand Caravan 3.8L 100K mi. New noise chirp-chirp-chirp Sometimes an intermittent rumble at idle seems to be in synch with the serpentine belt especially when the A/C is engaged. I changed the serpentine belt which did not look bad and did not emit the noise. Noise seems strongest at the alternator when I use a stethescope. I noticed the pulley seems a little loose with the belt removed, but the bolt is tight. This alternator has an overrunning alternator decoupler (OAD) pulley so maybe the loosness is normal. The bearings seem smooth when I spin it with the belt off, and it charges fine. Just the noise is bothersome. Do I need to change out the alternator or just the OAD pulley?
View 2 RepliesJust bought a 2.0l 2001 golf four door. the previous owner had the car for only a short time. They claimed the CEL came on and the code was for the MAF. He cleaned it and when I test drove the car there was no light or sign of any issues with how the car ran. Today while figuring out why the alarm kept going off(battery died in key fob and i replaced them), it began idling rough. It had just started to rain as well. From what i could find from older thread is it could still be the MAF, TCV/ISV, or O2 sensor. Is there any good way to diagnose without a vag-com cable. Mine wont update its firmware and i'm screwed at the moment in terms of gathering info on the problem.
View 9 RepliesI have a 01 vw bora 1.8t and recently I let it sit for one day and now it has trouble starting when it's cold and when it does start it has a very rough idle and often stalls out of you try and press the gas. Once it has warmed up she runs fine. My check engine light is on but I have no way to take her down to a shop to get the codes read. What is wrong with my car? One of my friends told me it could be a cool pack or a sensor.
View 1 RepliesI have a problem I can't seem to figure out. My car has a misfire at idle. It has stumbled every once in a while at idle before while at Red lights. Now it does it all the time. Check engine light is on and I got 5 codes. P0300, p0301, p0302, p0303, p0340, and p0012. The last two are for cam position sensor. I took it outo and looked at it. Looks fine. I reinstalled it and hand cranked the motor with a meter hooked up and I am reading about 10 volts when it senses the metal ring going around. So I think that is good. I sprayed brake cleaner on all the hoses to see if the motor reved to hopefully find a vacuum leak. Nothing. I also noticed today that my cooling fans or my ac don't work. Now I have another issue to deal with. I checked all my plugs and wiring and coils also.
View 1 RepliesI took delivery of my GTI last Friday and I'm loving the car so far. Coming from a 2001 Miata LS, this car is so much smoother and quiet. I especially love the engine and the sound it makes, or lack thereof. It's barely noticeable until I stomp on the gas and then there's a lovely ... growl? rumble? I'm trying to think of how to describe the sound to friends who cannot hear it firsthand.
BTW, I haven't noticed the dreaded turbo wastegate rattle between 2-3K RPMs so, no, it's not that.
I purchased a 2001 Jetta and it ran alright for a few days then all these problems started arising. The engine would not idle correctly and then a week later my EPC light started coming on. After all of that I have replaced the Throttle body ( Bosch) the MAF ( after market) and gas pedal ( after market). It ran fine for a day and then same issues. I had a mechanic relearn the throttle which had the Engine light go away for about a day. Now all the issues have came back. Here are the main problems.
1. Randomly lose throttle ( up hill, down hill, highway does not matter)
2. I randomly get stuck in park and cannot shift at all.
This is extremely troublesome since every time I lose throttle i have to put the car in park, shut her off and turn her back on to be able to drive. I keep getting the Throttle and MAF codes. I also checked on the recalled parts and they have already been replaced. I have read many reasons as to what would cause this but even the mechanic doesn't even know and I cant pay for him to check the electric. Also when driving if it is raining my car will not start or when it does it chugs. I was running through a puddle and after the water splashed the car basically would no longer run.
2001 VW Jetta 1.8t automatic.
Transmission has a hard time going into 1st and reverse. Also some times hits hard going into third. I have a CEL for a vehicle speed sensor? Was wondering if it's not the VSS but maybe one of the other tranny sensors?
Separate question. Same car has a rough idle issue. Occasionally stalls but intermittently runs normal always has a low idle around 600 rpm. I have a code for an injector on cylinder three.
VSS code : P0725 - engine speed sensor circuit malfunction
Injector code : P0203 - injector circuit open cyl 3
I got my 2.0 turbo project up and running. no CEL but i did have a bad o2 code but it was erased and didn't come back.
Not only is it rough idle and smoking out the exhaust but i am also getting smoke out of my catch can vent.
The smoke looks black coming out of the tailpipe but little blue after it gets out a ways from the car. Where to look??
I did just replace a piston and install a head gasket spacer. I don't know if that could be causing it some and it will go away with some driving or what?
I have not taken it out on the road as I have some brake work to finish. so mostly it idled.

I have a 2001 accent. I have noticed recently that there is a noise coming from the rear of the car. This is a rumble type noise which changes as I speed up or slow down ( It sounds as if it is something to do with the tyres)! I have changed the rear hub assembly and had the wheels aligned but the noise is still present. I have checked the suspension (by pushing down the back of the car) and it appears to be acceptable. Where this noise may be emanating from?
View 4 RepliesI own a 2001 Jetta 1.8t with Gti front end. So I was driving downtown the other day and I bottomed out really hard and cracked my oil pan. I didn't realize it was cracked and leaking so I drove it home, drove fine with no issues at all. When I got home I parked it and went inside and in the morning I came out and tuned it on for maybe ten seconds. It made a really loud ticking sound that was constant and oil pressure was almost all the way down. So I shut it off and looked and saw the oil pan. I fixed the oil pan yesterday and started it up and it sounded really good and drives fine. But I've been hearing a pretty decently loud ticking sound when everything's up to temp and warmed up. The ticking is only at an idle and it drives like it use to just sounds bad at an idle. Some people think it's my oil pump and tensioner, some people thing I ruined the turbo and possibly internals.
View 4 RepliesI can't figure out what this popping noise is that is coming from under the car (towards the back, not from engine). Its infrequent and I only notice it at idle. If I had to guess it would be exhaust related, but that still doesn't sound right. What could it be? See the video below for the sound I am talking about.

When in Idle the car starts to make a ticking noise and tends to get louder the longer it sits. On top of this the idle does seem louder than when I first got the car like a constant purring noise if that makes sense. I am only able to hear the ticking while in idle, but the purring noise is continuous even while driving. I'm not sure what the problem could be but have the necessary funds to make some repairs on my car though not tons.
My car currently has approximately 128,500 miles on the engine. I'd like to keep this car running for a long time.

I just got a VR6 Jetta 2001. Everything was fine until I didn't drive the car for like 2 days and it started doing this noise at start up. The noise disappears after a minute or so. What it could be ?

I recently replaced my driver side axle due to the inner CV joint boot being ripped. Its a 2001 Jetta VR6 with 173,000 miles on it and I have been driving it with a ripped boot for about a year and finally decided to replace the whole axle last night. I replaced it with an aftermarket axle (was on a budget) and the job was fairly easy. Since I did it late at night I was too tired to take it for a test drive so I waited until today. When I was driving it all was well until I took a right turn and I could hear a very distinct clicking sound coming from the driver side wheel well, it is constant throughout the turn.
The noise is only present when taking turns above 20mph and it sometimes even occurs when driving in a straight line. Take note that I have not had an alignment done yet since I had replaced the axle. The car is lowered about 2 inches on Raceland coil-overs that are pretty old and I think they are shot. But like I said the car has NEVER made this sound until I just recently replaced the axle. I am at a loss of what it could be and I am trying to sell the car currently so I would like to get this problem sorted out as soon as possible!
So I got my Haldex fluid and DSG fluid changed two weeks ago. When I picked the car up I noticed a vibration when I was making tight turns. Last week I called the dealer and told them. They said to drive it a bit more to see if it works it self out. But now after getting back from H2Oi, it still is doing it but not as bad.
Its a vibration you can feel and a rumble you can hear when making a tight turn at slow speed. Like turning into a parking space or turning at a stop sign. What would this be? I searched but couldn't find an exact answer.
