I am experiencing a weird noise coming from my 1.8T AWP engine. Its kind of a buzzing, and it gets louder with higher revs. Unfortunately its hard to hear while driving as I have an exhaust on it, but in a confined space you can hear it clearly.

Got that same whining noise, gets louder as the rev goes higher etc... so i turn the car off come back a little while later and its still making that noise. It doesn't really sound like a belt noise,
It was the power steering fluid, thought it was low. I haven't checked that yet...
How to get rid of that stupid buzzing noise from the exhaust every time it shifts in higher RPM, It freaking sounds like a Honda and it is driving my crazy. I did the Exhaust flap mod but it didn't go away.
View 24 RepliesJust to give a quick background, I recently had a transmission issue which I'm still getting sorted out. Mech is ordering me a re-manned valve body. Was getting codes on all solenoids. This was after having the trans go into limp mode. I don't know if this noise has something to do with that or not though I doubt it. I have the youtube link below with the actual sound. I sat the phone on the windshield with the hood popped so the sound is pretty loud. It's not nearly as noticeable inside the car. In fact I've never noticed it before so it may have been there all along or it just recently happened. As you can hear, right at about 1500rpm is the noise. Once I get above or below that the noise reduces. I also have another softer rattle sound at about 2300 RPM or so which I'm 95% sure is the shifter rod brushing which I plan to replace soon, that one is louder when it's cold or the engine is pulling hard uphill or something. But I'm mainly worried about the louder noise at 1500rpm.
What does this sound like it could be?
As much as this transmission stuff is costing to sort out, the last thing I need is another expensive repair.

I noticed last night that my cars turbo had a much louder whining noise when I accelerate. There is no blow off, doesn't sound like much air coming in and also there is not very much boost being put out at all. I've come to think that it may be a loose seal or gasket along the way but I'm sure hoping it isn't a pooched turbo... I don't have a boost gauge so checking boost pressure isn't an option right now. Just noticed from putting foot down but no boost.
View 1 RepliesI have an 03 GTI, and recently the engine has been very loud at speeds over 25mph. There isn't any rattling, ticking or chugging sounds. It just sounds like my rpm is at 7000, when it's actually 2000.

I have an '08 Civic Mugen and recently replaced my HID's. Soon after I noticed a buzzing noise that gets louder as I accelerate.
View 2 RepliesI bought a new 2014 Elantra last Monday. Around 100 miles (Wednesday) I noticed it was making a ticking noise when accelerating. The sound gets louder at higher RPMs and goes away when I get off of the accelerator. You can't hear it over the radio but it's embarrassing when my passengers do. It almost sounds like a puff of air escaping or something, similar to a go-kart engine lol.
Anyways, I took it to the dealer Thursday and they drove it and said the noise was normal during the engines break-in period and if it persists after 15k to bring it back and they would see if there was something that needed tightening.
My car is making a sort of whining noise; it sounds like some sort of tire noise, but I checked the tires and don't see anything that could be problematic. My husband checked to see if anything was rubbing, and doesn't find anything. The car is quiet when it is not moving, and the noise gets somewhat louder and slightly higher-pitched as I accelerate. It almost seems like the noise changed on a different road surface, but again, I don't see anything different with the tires. The car has about 140-150,000 on it. The noise has only been noticeable for a couple of weeks. No other problems, no change in steering or handling. No incident that I can think of that could have been a catalyst.

Symptom: when driving, occasionally there is what I can only describe as a fairly loud (but not overwhelming - radio easily drowns it out) hissing+buzzing noise. It's a bit like listening to a small plastic gear grind at a very high speed with a bit of a hissing as a backdrop. It only happens occasionally, and I haven't identified any glaring rhyme or reason to when it happens.
What I can say is I've observed it around shifts on fairly strong acceleration, I've observed it climbing long hills, and I've observed it when cruising ~60mph on the freeway. It SEEMS like it is sensitive to the gas pedal - when I hear it, if I depress the pedal more and accelerate I tend to move beyond it, but if I let the pedal off and decelerate (thinking of the 60 mph freeway case here) I can bring the sound back. And if I continue to decelerate we move past the noise.
So, I can't really tell if it is RPMs, or speed, or engine load, or...
A little about my history with the car: I bought it only 2,000 miles ago, so I can't say much about what is "normal" or has been going on for how long.
A little about the transmission - I know they have a very bad rep. I had the trans fluid changed with the correct type right after purchase. It generally shifts ok. There are occasional delays going from reverse into D, and sometimes shifts on acceleration are less elegant than you'd hope, but it seems to generally function as a 4-speed transmission ought to.
This noise is something failing, and given that seems to relate in some way to speeds/loads/possibly shifts I hope this isn't a sign the transmission is going to suddenly give out.
I let my friend drive my 1999.5 2.0L Jetta (Automatic). He attempted a drift around a cultist, when he started the drift the car made it's usual noise. But after the sharp turn and acceleration, the car made a higher pitch noise. It was definitely noticeable. When driving back home the car performed all the same, accelerated and turned as per usual. But the noise still remains. I don't know what is causing it to make the noise, maybe the Transmission? I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to cars so that's why I came here.
View 23 RepliesI have a 2002 Jetta GLS 2.0 4-speed automatic, 151,xxx miles... I have only owned it a couple of thousand miles, so I can't offer much on what is "normal"...
The issue I am having is as follows: I sometimes get a strange buzzing/hissing noise that sounds like it is coming from the engine compartment ~45 degrees to my right while driving. It's very hard to describe - the best I can say is it sounds a bit like a little plastic gear is spinning/grinding at high rpms, yielding a buzzing noise, and there is a hissing-like sound as a backdrop.
The sound happens only occasionally (but seems to be happening much more frequently, which is worrisome). I have heard the sound in different driving scenarios, so I can't say "it only happens when...". However, it DOES seem to be sensitive to throttle and driving conditions in some way. I have heard it while a shift is taking place, I have heard it under load on a long incline, and I tend to hear it right around 60mph. Interestingly, in the 60mph example, can make the sound go away by accelerating past 65, or by decelerating down to ~50... it seems like there is some kind of transition taking place at 60 that fosters the sound?
The transmission is generally functional - I had the fluid changed right after buying it (with the correct fluid), and it generally shifts ok. It does have some of the quirky behavior the transmission is known for: occasionally hesitates to go from R to D, sometimes shifts while driving are less subtle than they should be. But I'd say as a whole it operates as a 4-speed transmission would be expected to.
However, since this strange noise is getting worse, and seems to be related to shifts/load/andor speed in some way... I am worried about trans health. What to check? Because it is intermittent, and doesn't exist at idle and rarely appears when going around the block good luck getting a mechanic to observe it...
A months or so ago, after turning off my car I noticed a loud buzzing noise coming from the drivers-side lower firewall area. I cranked the car up and the buzzing stopped immediately. The problem began as intermittent but now within 2 minutes of turning my car the buzzing noise always starts, and runs my battery dead! I have taken my car to 2 local shops that have good reputations and they both began guessing and throwing parts at the problem to no avail my last resort is a dealership but it is 100 miles away and I'm not sure if they would do any better. I feel like this is something simple that an expert should have no problem diagnosing.
I have been searching around the internet and never seem to find someone with the exact same problem - until today!

So I acquired a 2003 1.8t GTi a little bit ago and i'm loving it, but I want it to be louder and more aggressive. With that being said I've already searched the forums but could not find anything for my specific case. I bought the car with a 3 inch downpipe and Borla muffler installed so I would like to know what way I can modify the exhaust to be louder while keeping these components in tact!
View 8 RepliesI have a 2008 Kia Rondo. Recently we took a trpi. Halfway there, we started to hear a humming/buzzing sound (similar to that of a remote control airplane). It was the loudest when we would stop at a stop light/sign, but would stop when the car was put into park. The noise grew louder and louder as the drive went on. The noise was coming from the front region of the car, but couldn't decipher exactly where. We were able to hear it from the inside of the car as well as the outside. The noise stopped once we reached our destination, but then started back up again on the way back home. Once home, it stopped again and our auto shop couldn't find anything wrong with it. What it could be. Hasn't done it since we've been home. Wondering if driving through the mountains put stress on it. What could be making that noise?
View 4 RepliesSo, after driving my car around for maybe an hour without any warning lights, I turned my car off. I tried to turn it on 15 minutes later when it turned over twice, sounding much louder than usual, then nothing. Tried again and just a single click. So I fear the worst and check the oil which is low but still on the stick and the coolant is fine too. I thought maybe the battery was dead so I tried a jump and that won't turn the engine over either. I put a charged battery from another car in and nada. I tried turning cam gear and also the flywheel pulley with a cheater bar and it doesn't want to move. I'm totally screwed right? That same morning I fiddled with the purge valves for the evap system because of a trouble code which O got to disappear. The engine also sounded funny for like 2 days only during ignition. By funny, it seemed to be louder than normal but no horrible metallic sounds or anything. Is it possible for it just to seize like that for no apparent reason?
View 15 Replies.I know this post sounds odd but its true. My wife has a 2006 Kia Optima with 197,000 miles and NOTHING has gone wrong. Well almost nothing. We've only had to replace the water pump and windshield wiper motor. We have it the oil changed and fluids checked and topped off before the factory recommendation. We bought the car in 2008 with 15,000 miles. Most of her miles are highway, to and from work.
Now my question. Its starting to sound rough, like its getting louder at higher RPM's. The ride was never smooth but it feels like the suspension is wearing out a bit. Should I risk taking it to a shop, having them look at it and tell me 1,000 that need to be replaced or fixed, or do we just let it ride until the wheels fall off? I feel like the old "if it aint broke, don't fix it" saying applys here. I had a friend tell me I should have really had the timing belt replaced by now. So Im kind of at a loss.
I have a 2003 Jetta Gli with a VR6 manual transmission 6 speed. So the other night I am pulling into this store parking lot and all of a sudden my car is just rolling its still in gear and running but when i push on the gas it just revs the motor i thought i was in neutral for a second but I wasn't so I jump out and push it into a parking spot.
Car is running but when i put it into gear and let off the clutch it just revs. so i have i towed to my house it was late so i decided to look in the morning.
So I go out the next day its still the same only now when i let off the clutch it just dies. I'm not an auto mechanic expert by any means any car work i have done is just self taught as needed diving in and figuring it out myself.
I did do the Cv axle on the passenger side last year i bought the one from O' Reilly auto parts. I know its the cheap one and probably a no no. Could this be my cv axle? Did my clutch go out? It moves through all the gears except reverse when the clutch is depressed. Could it be my transmission?
So for the last few days, every now and then when I turn on the car it just revs/accelerates on its own. The rpms will be at about 2k and stay that way whether I'm in neutral or in gear. Then when I go to turn the car off and back on it again it doesn't start. It'll sound like it wants to turn but it doesn't until I let it rest for a few minutes and then it's back to normal.
View 7 RepliesI cant recall if these sounds were there when i first bought the car, probably because i have the radio on most times. I think the buzzing sounds were present in the last month at least.
After i start up my car and even after idling for a while, i hear a buzzing sound coming from the engine. It gets louder when I accelerate. When I let go of the gas, the buzzing sound lags for a few seconds and then quiets down a little bit, but still can hear it in the background.
I lifted the hood up to listen more closely. I am not totally sure, but i think i can also hear a faint hissing sound ( sounds like leaking air?). I cant pinpoint where it is, but its around the engine.
I also notice that when I am idle, the MPG number in the dashboard is dropping fairly quickly. Like 0.1 mpg every 20 seconds. This is new and started today. I last drove it 4 days ago and didn't notice it happening then and i watch the mpg very closely every time i drive. Could there possibly be some gas leak?
I have a 2005 GTI 1.8T with 203K miles, stock except for a MagnaFlow exhaust. My problem arose about a month ago. When I accelerate aggressively and shift from 4th gear to fifth at about 4K RPMs the engine will jump up to 5K RPMs. Happens while shifting from any gear when accelerating hard.
When I push down on the clutch and take my foot off the gas, I get a jump in RPMs. It's kind of like the boost in the turbo is not getting released. I replaced the stock diverter valve with a Forge DV with the splitter. Had no effect on my problem, but now I have that cool sound when I get off the gas.
Could this be the waste gate on the turbo not opening and releasing the boost when I get off the gas? I'm not very familiar with the intricacies of the Turbo functions and the diverter valve.
