I am currently having a clunking noise coming from the front driver's side when accelerating from a stop or decelerating to a stop. It seems to happen only at low speeds and only on the driver's side. No strange vibrations or noise when turning or when going over bumps. I am thinking strut mounts or possibly trans mount.
View 24 RepliesRecently my car has had a hollow clunking noise and it seems to be coming from the drivers front side. It doesn't really make the noise if I hit a pothole or something in the road. It does it when I'm driving down a bumpy road or sometimes even a smooth road. I thought it was my top strut mounts and bearings. I replaced them and the noise went away for about 2 weeks but it seems to be back. I was thinking maybe sway bar bushings? Could my new parts I just installed be bad already?
View 3 RepliesClunking happening when accelerating and braking, but is not noticeable if I shift without too much kick between 1st and 2nd. Clunking is heard right under my feet and sounds like its dead center in the car. Some slight metal scraping sound can be heard like a bolt is loose (none found).
Replaced: Tie rod assembly, both axles, doggone mount, struts, strut mounts, strut bearings, sway bar bushings.
At low speed driving and hitting a small bump I hear a clunking noise in the front on both sides. But when driving at faster speeds and hitting a bump it makes no noise at all. I can't seem to figure out what it is.
View 5 RepliesI am trying to find origin of clunking noise, but it is difficult to do as there is no visual signs and no excessive movements in any components.
Little bit of details and video. Noise occurs when moving rapidly steering wheel on stationary car with running engine. Not noticeable when at speed. Wheel is not vibrating and cv joints not clicking. Very tiny free movement in steering wheel about 1mm, but I am not sure if that is related maybe a completely different issue there. Mot tester make an advisory note that steering system slightly rough, but its not that useful to find an issue.

I've been having a problem with a popping/clicking sound coming from my front end for some time now. 2 days ago I replaced the top strut mounts thinking they were worn and this was the source of my problem, however, the noise persists.I have raised the car and have tried to physically move the wheels, up, down, left, right, but I get no play in any direction.
When the sound happens: If I go over small bumps in the road, or depressions, or speed bumps at slow speed I hear what sounds like a metal on metal sound, but muffled, not a clang, but a pop sound. I can induce it by stepping hard on the brakes, as the car lurches forward I get the sound. After stopping, when the weight moves back again I get the sound again.HOWEVER, I do NOT get the sound from acceleration. I have tried putting on the parking break and trying to take off, but I don't get the sound. The sound is their wether or not I'm in gear.
What could this sound be? My possibilities include:T ie-Rods, Axles, Transmission (loose bolts), broken engine mounts, loose subframe, or perhaps my control arm bushings (but they were replaced with poly bushings about 30k miles ago)
I just had my stock clutch replaced with a South Bend Stage II, of the most recent generation.
It's making a weird noise, and sounds pretty bad... kinda like a rough TDI. It makes the sound when in gear, either accelerating or decelerating. There isn't any noise to speak of at idle.

Ok so im going to try my best to explain this. Last week my passenger side motor mount broke the bolt snapped off and my engine fell on the ground and cracked the oil pan, too make a long story short someone put the wrong bolt in it and I fixed it with the right bolt. When the engine fell and the pan cracked i immediately shut the car off and coasted to the side of the road. I checked all bolts on the car to see if anything was loose but nothing was. But now when i start to take off i hear a clunk from the front end and i do not know what it is or could be. It is not the axles there is two brand new ones in it and have been checked. What it could be?

I have a 2004.5 Jetta GLI 1.8T. 96K miles.
The sound just started a couple of weeks ago and is becoming more prominent. On cold starts (like in the morning or after sitting for a while), the front right of the car makes a repeated clicking/ clunking sound while in neutral. However, the second I apply any gas, the sound goes away. Only when my engine is idling at around 700-800 rpms does it make the sound. After driving the car around for about 10 minutes or so ("warming up"), the sound eventually goes away and comes back on the next cold start.
Yesterday, my ABS light came on and never went away. I have no idea if there's any relation. May be a separate issue. I've tried searching for a diagnosis with no luck. Thoughts on what I might be hearing?
when i accelerate or let off the peddle I hear and aloud thug or dull bang. I've checked and greased all the u joints. Disconnected the carrier bearing and separated the drive shaft and greased it up. Still get the noise I have very little play in the carrier bearing but I don't think that's the problem. It sounds to me like might be at the transmission. What do y'all think it is?
View 2 RepliesI noticed a clunking noise in the rear of my car (drivers side more specifically). After doing some investigating, I noticed that the bushing in the rear shock absorber is completely shot. It is practically falling out and this is what is causing my noise. My question is, is it possible to be able to just replace the bushing in the shock? If not, I assume I could just replace the rear shocks without having to get a whole new set of coilovers? Can I replace the rear shocks with a different aftermarket brand or do I have to stick with raceland?
View 7 RepliesI have the most terrible clunking/rubbing sound on my right passenger side, especially when I'm turning left. When I drive straight it sounds like the wheel is hopping even when going over minuscule imperfections in the road. I also get a terrible rub when going over speed bumps or into grooves and dips in the road.
I've searched and searched but cannot come up with a answer towards rectifying the issue. My car hasn't been lowered; I'm running the stop 337 suspension. I've replaced the following within the past two years:
-control arm bushings
-ball joints
-tie rod ends
-upper strut bushings and bearings
-passenger side axle
-dog bone mount
-engine mount
-tranny mount
Most recently:
-front struts
-sway bar end-links
-driver's side axle
It seems to like everything should be solid considering I've done all of this crap. I don't understand why I'm having this issue and why it sounds like it is getting worse and worse.
Just installed raxle on my driver side. All clicking sounds are fixed but I noticed if I take right turns sometimes you can hear a constant clunking sound coming from the driver side wheel. It doesn't happen all the time, you kinda have to turn and hit a certain angle of the steering wheel. Also, only happens when driving low, if I raise the car just a little bit its gone. Never had issues with my oem axle binding so Im not sure how exactly does the binding sound?
View 24 RepliesI drive a 2013 4 door gti. Car has 4k miles. Just last weekend myself and my buddies threw my coils in. FK Silverline X plus'. I am not sure on the measurement from fender to ground but I am a finger gap in the front, and fingertips in the rear. After throwing my coils in on saturday, I had an alignment and the rear camber adjusted. Just today, sunday, while driving home I heard a weird clunking/knocking noise. Previously I drove a mk4 and I know the sound of sway bar on axle and this is not the sound. Its coming from the passenger side front.. and I can sort of feel it through my clutch and brake. After pulling the car over I checked everything I could. wheels are all tight, struts seem fine. The noise occurs continuously even on smooth roads. The knocking/popping is pretty loud and can be heard in cabin. My buddy had mentioned the guys the aligned my car might have forgot to tighten something so I am heading back to the shop first thing in the morning.
View 3 RepliesA clunk sound coming from the front end. Drivers side and Passenger side. Not really a metal on metal sound. The problem started after coilover install. The sound occurs while braking and accelerating over bumps. So what I've replaced:
-Strut Mounts and Bearings
-Lower control arm bushings (R32 bushings)
-Drivers Side CV axle
What I've checked:
-Tie rod ends have no play
-Ball joints have no play.
-I have no sway bar, so not the sway bar bushings.
-Its not the axle hitting the frame.
Could possibly be the dog bone mount but when I installed the 1' motor mounts I saw no issue but could possibly be the bushing. feel the clunk in my foot as well.
MK4 2000 Jetta 2.0 5speed With Raceland Ultimo Coilovers (Junk)
Today I was driving on the freeway and a noticed my cars exhaust burbles way more than it used to, like it used to do it at around 1500 rpm when I am decelerating or between shifts, now it always does it when I decelerate like there is no smooth decelerating sound I used to have its just all crackle and burble, I do have an exhaust leak but I've had it since I did my down pipe and it was fine before, I've ordered an oem one and ill slap it on when im doing my fmic install, i did replace all coilpacks yesterday so maybe I did it wrong if its even possible to do that wrong. And also my windshield has so many nicks in it like it looks like a lot of dirt on the windshield, it looks like it'll wipe off but it doesn't there's no cracks just tiny dings all over the windshield.
View 5 RepliesWhen accelerating from a stop, I get a clunking sound from the front end. I took some pics of the sway bar and I think it maybe loose. There is a gap between the bolt between the bar. Is this normal, or can I tighten it with the X on the ground or does it have to be up on a lift to properly tighten?
View 14 RepliesMy 2004 Golf GTI VR6 6-speed manual makes a louder than usual decelerating noise while in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears. If I give it gas it doesn't make any noise but once I take my foot off the pedal it makes a louder than usual decelerating noise. It sounds almost as if something is maybe grinding but I'm not sure what it is. One mechanic said it may just need to be serviced (new transmission fluid). I've read some forums saying it may be the bearings or maybe need a new transmission. The car runs fine otherwise and there aren't any problems shifting up, it shifts really smooth. '
Its only when I downshift that I hear the noise. The noise is the same no matter if I'm turning or going straight and and it's in neutral, there ISN'T noise. It's only while in 4th, 3rd, or 2nd while decelerating. Even if this is a common problem with VW's how do I fix it?! The previous owner said it's been the same way since he's had it and it has NOT gotten worse and his mechanic said it was nothing detrimental to the car so he left it that way. The GTI has 130K miles on it and runs strong, that's the only problem it really has. I'm not sure when the transmission fluid was last changed so that could be a possibility. Going to possibly try that in a few days and see what happens.
So i have been noticing a lugging/clunking sound when accelerating from turning.
I say it sounds like that because its almost like when a noob driving is trying to shift and stalls for not giving enough gas. but this is comming from the back and for the longest i thought it was due to the ESP kicking in but i been driving quite calm lately due to blow shocks.
I wish I could get a sound clip but its only when driving. Is that normal? Prolly not but hear something when it engages? I am on a OEM haldex controller atm.
I started noticing the noise about a week ago, When i seem to let of the gas or even once in a wail push on the gas Hear a "CLICK" noise, this is not when pressing the brakes at all only when letting off pedal?
I am thinking it could be transmission, but have read it could be a few thing, From the brake pads to CV joint to trow out bearing, Axles, Lightened flywheel, Motor mounts, etc. But i am unsure where to start, Its and O2M 6spd tranny in my 20th, with lsd installed, lightened flywheel, VFmotormounts...
I started to notice a slight vibration coming from my front end on the drivers side last week and now is pretty loud. It increases with acceleration, fades slightly when turning left, and goes away almost entirely when turning right. Tie rods seem fine. The inner and outer cv boots are torn but have been that way for some time.
