Golf IV / Jetta IV :: RPMs Skyrocketing / Transmission Slipping - CEL Code P1296?

Dec 23, 2015

I have a 2002 Manual VW 1.8t Jetta, and searched everywhere on the net and couldnt find anything. The problem is my RPMs skyrocket very high, like up to 6500, wheteher I give it a little gas or try to speed up to get on the highway. It seems almost as if the car thinks it is not in gear, I get no power or gain no speed when this happens. And it happens in every gear, 1-5. This is the main problem I am trying to figure out what it is.

Now I got the code read for the CEL and is is a P1296 and I know that this code means that I have a bad coolant temperature sensor or possibly even a thermostat itself. I just bought a new temp sensor and plan to replace it tomorrow or the day after. I cannot imagine that this is what is causing the problem with my RPMs to skyrocket uncontrollably when accelerating.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Engine Light With Error Code P1296 Came On

I was cruising down the highway and my check engine light came on. I was a few minutes from a auto store and they said my code was p1296. I found out it is either the thermostat or the coolant temperature sensor. I wanna know where it is located in the engine bay. I have a 02 VW Jetta 1.8T.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2000 - P1296 Code / Hard Start And Rough Idle

Having trouble with my '00 Jetta 2.0 A/T w/ 98K miles. Had the water pump replaced @ a year ago (for the 2nd time, the 1st replacement died after <15K miles.) The car has had issues with rough idle when started, especially with a cold engine, since before the 2nd water pump. I've replaced the coil pack, thermostat, and coolant temperature sensor in the recent past in addition to the water pump & timing belt.

The gas mileage sucks, and when it's idling rough it doesn't "idle up", & will stall if the gas pedal is pressed with 30 secs. of starting. Otherwise it seems to run fine. The coolant temp. sensor was replaced after a CEL indicating it was bad. The CEL went off after it was replaced, but it's now throwing a P1296 Cooling System Malfunction. I have noticed the temperature gauge fluctuates instead of staying around the "middle" since the 2nd water pump replacement, and will run "colder" in colder weather. Since spring is here, the temp. gauge stays around "normal", or the middle.

Some research online says thermostat OR coolant temperature sensor. Since the gauge registers normal now, I'm leaning towards a bad temp. sensor...?

Does the hard start/rough idle and the cooling system malfunction CEL could be related?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 - Transmission Is Slipping At 20 Mph

2002 vw Jetta sportwagon automatic trans, 151k, no previous issue with the transmission like this. the new issue is that the transmission is slipping at 20mph. what I would guess is 2nd to 3rd (3rd-drive)gear, the transmission "slips" and over revs, I take my foot off the gas and it engages.

I have no more issue accelerating after that. it only happens at exactly (on the speedo) 20mph. hopefully it is only a transmission fluid issue.

As a sidenote. my car will periodically lose power when the engine is cold with no rhyme or reason. the car power drops (on a flat or an incline) for about 2sec then back to normal. its been happening for a year or so.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 1.8T - Automatic Transmission Slipping When At Running Temperature

I have a 2002 1.8T tiptronic with around 150k Kms. Recently, the transmission has started slipping, more so when at running temperature than when cold. It feels like when a certain amount of gas is applied is when it starts slipping. It can slip immediately after 3-4 and 4-5 with continued acceleration, or will constantly slip while in 5th if trying to drive at speeds greater than 90 km/h (with very gradual acceleration to that point).

Does this sound like a clutch wear issue requiring a new transmission, or more like a valve body issue?

Camry :: 2011 Transmission Slipping - RPMs Went Up

Here is what my 11 camry le/4 cy/34K-hwy miles does at highway speeds

- 65 to 70 take the foot off the gas and feels like a clunk, also happens at 35-40.

I have felt the slow down affect at 40 and it doesn't feel the same. Also, coming out of parking spot - the rpms went up but the car didn't go but suddenly jumped - like the tranny is slipping.

I took it in to the dealer X3, "camrys do that", reset the ECM, thinking of selling this thing - my Honda's have never given me any problems but they are much noisier but I can handle noise vs worrying the tranny will crap out on me in a few years.

Honda - Fit :: 2008 - Transmission Is Slipping Between 2000 And 25000 RPMs

I'm the original owner of a 2008 Honda Fit Sport, Manual Transmission it has 134k miles original clutch. It feels like the transmission is slipping between 2,000 and 2,5000 RPM in 3rd,4th, and 5th gear. If I set it on cruise control with the RPM's between 2k~2.5k the car runs smooth and normal, but if I disengage the cruise control and accelerate, the transmission feels like it's slipping between 2k~2.5k RPM. Once it goes above 2,500 RPM the car accelerates normally.

So is this the transmission, the clutch or the engine? The car has been running fine and it suddenly started doing on Friday, my initial thought was that it needed a new clutch, however, the clutch is engaging fine and the feel that the transmission is slipping only occurs in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear between 2k ~ 2.5k RPM

If the transmission is bad, how much does it cost to repair?

Passat (B6) :: Transmission Slipping / Engine Lost All Power / RPMs At 3k

So yesterday I was driving from a stoplight and for the second time in as many links, the car did something I've never experience and any of my vehicles before. It rev'd through 1-2-3 and on the 3-4 shift the rpms just held at 3k and it almost seemed the engine had lost all power or maybe I guess come to think of it seemed like the transmission was slipping. I know it had the TSB for the hard shifts which was for 1-2 and 3-4 if I remember right. I'm going to take it to the dealer but I know them by now that if I give them a general problem that isn't happening at that moment, then they'll say everything is working properly. Like I mentioned before, this is only the second time over the life of the car (45k miles) that this has been experience when I was in the car.

Passat (B5) :: CEL Code P1296 - Coolant Temp Sensor?

I was driving today when the CEL came on, I scanned the car which gave me 1 code: P1296.

I googled it and said it is possibly the coolant temp sensor?

The Engine temp was normal at 190' or just below even after quite a bit of driving today.

Would the problem just be the sensor or should I be looking for other problems as well?

The car is a 2002 B5.5 AWM 1.8T Tiptronic.

Passat (B5) :: P1296 CEL Code - Manufacturer Control Fuel Air Metering

My 02 Passat V6 is throwing this code. I have searched on this forum & the description for this problem is a coolant sensor problem...but my car doesn't exhibit this. The CEL I get is P1296 Manufacturer Control Fuel Air Metering. I ran it on the scan tool before & it threw a different code (which I forgot to write down) but it was basically something about a cylinder misfire...

Occasionally car is VERY difficult or impossible to start. Sometimes I have to wait an hour before retrying before I get it to start. When it does start it blows white smoke & has a VERY rich fuel smell. What could be causing this?

Prius (2004-09) :: Code P0A63 And Transmission Slipping

I have a 2006 Prius with 103k miles that runs and drives great but sometimes with no warning will display the red triangle and check engine light and seem to slip out of gear. All I can do is coast to a safe spot to reset the codes. Once I reset the code it runs fine again.

Accent LC (2000-05) :: Transmission Slipping - Code P0734

So I bought a 2000 Hyundai Accent for my 16 year old daughter and the guy sold me a car that has a slipping trans. So I went to the Autozone and had the codes pulled and it was a P0734 code. I replaced the trans fluid and replaced the internal bearing and shim with the 42220LK kit from whatever it takes transmission parts store. Trans still slips. What else or should I just unload it?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2.0 Auto Transmission - Code P0730 Incorrect Gear Ratio

Just picked up a 2002 golf 2.0 auto for $200. Get the car home start it up and it runs great but... transmission shifts all kinds of funky. Starts in first then shifts to third. If I give it some gas it shifts down to second but has nothing there, just revs. Will not go into 4th at all. Throw my little mac scanner on it some codes come up. Only one that mattered was p0277 if I remember. Do a little search and it comes up as the g68 under the tranny mount. Change that out and had not cel. Still shifting the same but no code at all. Throw my scanner on just to see and get p0730 incorrect gear ratio.

Ford Transmission :: 2003 Escape - Code P1744 / Slipping When Trying To Accelerate

After multiple problems with this vehicle already, it's about time that I made an account.

We have a 2003 Escape XLT with around 150k on it, and are now having transmission issues.

It's slipped some when cold and starting from a full stop and sometimes rolling stop, when trying to accelerate. Basically, it acts like it's in neutral until the gears "catch up". Once it's warmed up, it's fine even on steep hills. Also, going in reverse seems to act normally oddly enough.

We were hoping to get through winter as it was since it was easily manageable, but yesterday the O/D light started flashing and we have the pending error P1744. Nothing happened when the error came on including the normal slip since everything was warm at the time.

We'd of course, love to avoid completely replacing the tranny, but I'm mostly learning as I go with this one. Where to start narrowing out possibilities? The fluid was changed when we first got the escape about four years ago and is still at the right level and clear/red.

I am getting to check engine codes and I can't figure out what is causing them, one is P1296 cooling system malfunction, the other is P1654 Check DTC Memory of control panel ECU, any clues as to why I'm getting these, I did have a bad thermostat i changed that and it's still on, I also used the new prestone antifreeze for all makes and models, cause I am about 200 miles away from a dealership for g12.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Transmission Slipping In / Out Gear - Code P0705

I recently had a thread going regarding my 1999 F350 2wd auto transmission slipping in/out gear. Tried to follow up on old thread but got confused so I'm trying to start a new one. Basic problem is that truck was slipping in/out of gear. Cleaned the solenoid pack electrical plug (as instructed on previous thread) and the truck didn't act up for 2 weeks. Today it started slipping in/out again and this time it registered a code of P0705.

Golf V R32 :: Transmission Jerky - Clutch Slipping When Start Going From Dead Stop

So I took my car in for the recall last night and also told my service advisor that my transmission has been a bit jerky lately. Kind of felt like the clutch was slipping when you start going from dead stop, and clunk here, clunk there.

After their diagnostics it seems to be the Mechatronics unit, apparently about 50% of our cars had the issue. The part would have to be ordered from VW due to it being made per VIN and is on back order. They didn't have the reacall parts in stock so I had to leave my car there. Stuck in a bright red Jetta now.
