Golf V R32 :: Noise That Sounds Like Rotational Dragging

Nov 19, 2011

My R is making a noise I don't think I've heard before.

I've been listening to my Borla exhaust to figure out if it's rubbing on the propshaft. I'm pretty sure that's been sorted, but it still 'sings' a little bit. I'm guessing it's some sort of resonance...

Anyway, while I'm listening carefully, I hear a noise that sounds like 'rotational dragging', almost like a parking brake is dragging a little bit, but no screech or anything. It's particularly bad (though still subtle) when everything is cold. It's been colder here lately, 30-40F.

At moderate speed, 30-40mph, I don't hear the noise under throttle, but when I lift throttle, I hear the dragging sound. It might be that it's always there, and just being masked by engine / exhaust noise. Or it might make more noise when I lift.

It seems to be coming from "under and back" of the driver's seat.

I am running an upgraded Haldex with the switch set full time on 'race'. I had the 40K service at 40K, and I'm now at 76K.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2008 F350 - Rotational Noise Almost Sounds Like Creaking

In forward drive or reverse, I hear a rotational noise that almost sounds like the bed creaking when you're getting it on. As I go faster the noise goes faster until drowned out by road and engine noise. The noise is unaffected by applying the brakes. I jacked the truck up and spun tires as fast as I could by hand and got no noise but when I lowered it back to ground and had the truck roll the noise was back. Noise is not affected by turning wheel.

Golf/GTI VI :: Rotational Scraping Noise From Front End

25k miles, recently started getting this noise from the front end when going ~15mpg or less. Decreases and increases with wheel speed and loudest when coasting to a stop sign. Sounds like a scraping disc brake, however brake pressure doesn't affect the noise. Started happening after last service when they rotated the tires. Haven't had the chance to inspect anything yet.

Ford - Focus :: 2002 - Sounds Like Something Is Dragging Behind The Car

It sounds like something is intermittently dragging behind my car - like a light piece of metal dragging on the ground. I pulled over twice to look, and everything appears ok. There is also a weird noise that sounds like it could be coming from the trunk - a low pitch rattle. I drive a 2002 Ford Focus manual and this just started today while driving straight on residential streets.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Driver Side Rear Sounds Like Brakes Are Dragging Against The Rotor

Went and got new tires on the supercrew. Went going through parking lots or simply driving i hear a loud squeal like brake pad squeal. I put brand new wagner ceramics on the truck. Also if i turn to the left the driver side rear sounds like brakes are dragging against the rotor. Whats goin on with this. The squeal will happen between 10 mph to 20 mph and the grinding noise will happen if I am cruising or turning to the left. It goes away when i apply the brakes.

Saturn Vue :: 2004 - Rotational Noise Coming From The Front End

I have a 2004 Saturn Vue, V6, FWD with ~170K miles. It has a rotational noise coming from the front end that I can't find/fix. My regular mechanic has replaced both front wheel bearings, the rotors and brake pads. Tires have ~35K on them and no noticeable uneven wear. They were rotated and the noise didn't go away. Mechanic thought it might be transmission, but transmission shop disagreed, but couldn't suggest an alternative. The noise is speed dependent. Initially you had to be at highway speeds to detect it, but now you can hear it at 25 - 40 mph as well. Best description is a "whoop-whoop" sound. You cannot hear the noise if the car is parked and you rev the engine.

Golf V R32 :: Rotational Vibration At Front Right Increase With Speed

I'm hoping to see if there is another solution here. I just hit 100k on my .:R and it has developed a vibration that increase with speed front right. I have done a few things already including the following: swapped out winter wheels for summer, had summer wheels re-balanced (both are hub centric). Both lower control arm bushings on L&R side (both were original), new ball joint front right (it was wiped), new hub assembly/wheel bearing front right, re-torqued all the sub frame bolts to spec, inspected tie rod end - appears OK, inspected strut mount - appears OK, strut and coil appear OK, neither CV boot is not torn. replacing the wheel bearing made it quieter but the vibration is still there. It feels like the worst possible unbalanced wheel and the vibration is exaggerated under a load. I'd try a CV next but I'm having a hard time sourcing a front right CV.

Prius (Gen 3) :: Distinct Rotational Noise At About 30 To 40 MPH - Wheel Bearing Failure?

Since the Prius is my wife's primary car, I can go a long time without driving. I recently have been driving it more, and it seems to me that it has the sounds of a failing wheel bearing. Between about 30-40 MPH there seems to be a distinct rotational noise that sounds to me like a loud wheel bearing from the front end. The sound seems to get quieter as I go faster, and at 60 mph + it seems normal.

My wife didn't notice any difference, but she drives the car everyday so maybe she didn't notice the gradual increase in noise. I know it's not tire related, because I just swapped tires. When I did, I didn't feel any play in the front bearings or feel any roughness when the wheels were rotated.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2007 - Rotational Noise On Acceleration / ICE Won't Start

I have a 2007 Prius that had a rotational noise on acceleration. I pinpointed the noise to the transmission area and suspected something was wrong with the electric motor. I took it to a local transmission shop and they disassembled the transmission to replace a bearing.

After repairs, they called me and informed me that the hybrid battery needed to be replaced. I've been driving the car for about a week with the noise and had no indication of a battery problem, or any other problem.

I had them tow the car back to my shop. The hybrid battery was discharged. The battery blocks were all between 10 and 12 volts. The vehicle would move slowly, but the ICE wouldn't start up to charge the battery. It had one DTC for hybrid battery malfunction.

I removed the battery from my own Prius and installed it in the car. The ICE fired up right away and shut off soon after, which would be completely normal in my car. But the engine never started again. I drove a short distance all on electric. The battery bars depleted quickly. Regen braking was not operating. There was a shudder every so often on acceleration. I'm not sure if it's in the transmission or the ICE is attempting to start? There are no DTCs so far.

The screen indicating where the power is going indicates that the engine is ON and delivering power even when it clearly is not. Not sure where to go with this one. It seems really odd that the ICE started once and won't start up. I tried disconnecting the battery and starting over, but the ICE still does not start up. I looked around the transmission for something disconnected, but found nothing.

Passat (B6) :: Rotational Scraping Noise Coming From Front End Under Load

Not sure if it's related to the crappy weather we've been having here in the NE, but I've got this terrible rotational scraping / grinding noise coming from the front end (sounds like the right corner). At first I thought it must be the belly pan or a fender liner came loose after driving through snow / ice but everything looks fine. Only occurs when moving, under load, it's affected by steering a bit. I'm watching two little kids I haven't been able to get the wheels off for a closer look.

Subaru - Impreza :: 2008 - Intermittent Grinding Rotational Noise

I've got about 88k miles on my 2008 Impreza 2.5i manual. The last 30k miles on it have been rather rough (~60 miles a day stop-and-go highway traffic). Somewhere around 80k I developed a leak in my clutch hydrolic line that lead to a clutch replacement around 82k miles (I had a few leaks simultaneously so diagnosis of the clutch line took longer than optimum). I also had new break pads installed around the same time, tires rebalanced, alignment, and one new ball joint on the front driver-side wheel. Anyways, after this work I had a noise develop that I've had checked out twice and has yet to be diagnosed.

I am getting a grinding noise that occurs with both front breaks but at different, specific, reproducible points in the tire/rotor/etc rotation. It also only occurs with mild break pressure (most noticeable during a gradual, easy deceleration). The frequency changes with speed, so I know it is rotation point specific. Heavy break pressure does not generate the noise. The noise is also the most noticeable after the car has been at rest for a number of hours, and lessens the longer I've been driving continuously (but never goes away completely). I have not noticed much change as a result of moisture, and I live in Colorado so our humidity is at a minimum. I've also had my rotors checked to make sure they aren't warped, and I've been assured that my break system looks good and clean.

Hyundai - Noises :: 2002 - Rotational Noise Coming From Left Rear Wheel

My wife has a 2002 Hyundai Elantra that has a rotational noise coming from the left rear wheel. We just got it back from the shop where they replaced the left front wheel bearing and rear brakes/rotors, and the right/rear wheel bearing was replaced about a year ago. It's a thumping noise that speeds up proportionally to the speed of the car. Normally I'd expect a bad tire or warped rotor, but the tires are relatively new and we didn't notice the problem before we took it to the shop last week (though it's possible we weren't hearing it over the wheel bearing noise they fixed). Is it possible we got a bad rotor, or the shop did something wrong? Or could this be something new entirely (which would be entirely typical for this car).

Sonata NF (2006-10) :: Rotational Grinding Noise When Accelerating Through Hard Left Or Right Turns

I have a 2007 Sonata 3.3 V6 GLS (CDN model) with 102k km (63K miles). Recently, I am noticing a rotational metal-like grinding noise from the front left wheel / engine area when engaging in hard right and left turns - usually a long looped highway on-ramp or sharp 90 degree turns. The interesting thing is this only happens when I am accelerating through the turns - when I left off the gas and cruise I don't hear it anymore.

On the side, I am also getting a single clunk noise when shifting from Park to Drive and vice versa from the same area (front left wheel) - not sure if this is related (i.e. if this is all related to a failing CV joint or wheel bearing).

Prius (2004-09) :: 2006 - Rotational Squeaking Noise From Driver Side Left Wheel

I have a 2006 Prius (150K miles) with a noise coming from the drivers left wheel. It is a hollow metallic squeak that only occurs while the vehicle is moving. It sounds like the wheel is making brief contact with something metallic at the same point on every rotation. The pitch of the squeak increases with the speed of wheel rotation. It does so while rolling, with breaks and without. The noise gets louder when turning right, and softer when turning left, though it begins to get louder again when the wheel is turned hard all the way left.

Honda - Pilot :: 2007 - Rotational Noise From Front Passenger Wheel When Turning Left

I have a 2007 Honda Pilot. 65K Miles.

Several months ago, when turning left, regardless of speed, my wife starting hearing a noise. It is not a knocking or harsh grinding noise, but a low grumble (I don't have a great word for it). It's definitely rotational, it doesn't get any louder as speed increases, but it obviously happens more often. It seems to come from the right side of the car, I originally thought it was from the wheel, but just now I had it jacked up and had a neighbor who works on cars look at it with me and now I'm not so sure.

When I described the problem to him, he first thought it was a CV joint, or possibly ball bearing. After a few minutes looking under the hood, he quickly ruled those out. Boots were in great condition, and he remarked that everything seems to be very solid around the wheel.

I thought that noise was a result of weight shift to the right side of the vehicle when making right-hand turns, but we had the car up on two jacks stands placed on the jack braces, turned the car on and gave it some gas with the wheels turned left, and you can definitely hear the noise with zero weight on the wheels or axles. When you straighten the wheel, the noise subsides.

Sonata I45 (LF 2015+) :: Rotational Tapping Noise Coming From Front Passenger Wheel Well Area

2016 LTD Ultimate, 2700 miles. First and only Hyundai for the moment.

I've experience this one twice, a few weeks apart: cold start the car, and in the first 100 yards or so I'll hear a tapping noise that's clearly rotational, varies with speed but eventually ceases. Sounds like it's coming from front passenger wheel well area, and sounds like a stick or some sort of debris is stuck in the wheel. Both times I've inspected the area and found nothing whatsoever.

I live in an apartment complex area, park in a lot always in reverse so I'm always going from park to drive. The area I live in is wooded ("Pine Barrens" region of Long Island) but the roads are paved so it's not like I'm driving thru wilderness.

Mazda - Miata :: 2007 - Grooves Inside Rims Of Wheel / Rotational Noise When Drive

So i was cleaning my 2007 mazda miata and i noticed one wheel has some fairly deep scratched grooves inside of it. I inspected all the other tires and the other front tire has similar marks but they are way way more of a surface/barely there scratches. The rear wheels are not scratched. I am also hearing a rotational noise when i drive. It gets faster as I accelerate and slower when I brake. I don't know anything about cars.

Subaru - Impreza :: Rotational Noise In Front Right Tire Area Noticeable At 35 Mph And Syncs With Speed Of Wheel

I have a 2013 Subaru Impreza with 23,500 miles on it; all service done at dealer, by the book. Brought car in at 22,212 miles for rotational noise in front right tire area that becomes noticeable at 35 mph and syncs with speed of wheel (especially annoying at highway speeds). tires were at 6/32, inside edge 'slightly chopped'. Alignment was done; right rear toe out of adjustment. the noise remained.

returned to dealer; manager took a ride with, said he heard the noise, said tires (the originals) might be made of softer rubber and wear faster, or it might be a wheel bearing starting to go. he did a visual check of tires and measured tread. they replaced the right bearing. Noise still there.

Returned to dealer, they road tested , heard the noise, ran car on lift and 'traced to center of transmission', ordered a Subaru remanufactured transmission and installed it. the noise remains . I was especially shocked at replacement of transmission! (car is still under warranty so it's not costing me anything but grief and aggravation at no resolution).

I have always felt the problem is at the wheel, but i'm no mechanic. they are the experts. Could it be a problem with defective brake parts that somehow are rubbing or if the lugs are tightened too far could that bend something. I am not a street racer and I drive like I plan to keep the car for a long time!

When I called (after the transmission replacement) about the driver one-touch window not working, the desk guy told me how to reset it (very easy) and said that they'd forgotten to do that. I told him that the noise is still there and he said "well, it could be coming from the roof rack" (I have non-Subaru cross bars on the roof rack and a fairing. I thought that comment was lame as the crossbars have been on since 2013 and I've heard no rotational noise from them. However, to 'rule out', I will remove them and take a drive.

I told desk guy I was going to drive the car for a week or so because conditions have not been optimal with bumpy roads and weather to be completely certain. several days have passed since that conversation; the noise is still there and once I've driven without the crossbars on, the car is going back.I am hoping for feedback on what to tell them to check next.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Exhaust Heat Shield - Slight Creaking Noise That Sounds Similar To The Rattle

I've noticed that potentially my heat shield or whatever guard that is 1 step toward the front of the car from where the inlet pipe connects to the exhaust system may be the reason for my rattle at 2k and 3k rpms. i think its a heat shield but I am not sure. the thing is it seems properly mounted, nothing is cracked/broken/or loose. But when I do try and wiggle it it does make a slight creaking noise that sounds similar to the rattle I get. So I could foresee this as being my issue.

But, is there anyway to fix this rattle w/out just taking off the part? i figure its there for a reason and it looks like its held on in 2 places. But they're not nuts they almost look like spot welds or something. 1 on each side. What to do?

Something to get you all in here:
