It all started with a fuel cap loose light (it wasn't) after a day or two the MIL came on and got this code I reset it but I'm sure it'll come back since there's probably a real leak. What can I check myself to find this leak?

2004 VW touareg v6 - engine light on - autozone diagnosed as code P0456. Possibly gas cap, so I replaced with aftermarket gas cap from auto zone. Light still on. What can I do or replace to fix problem. I read something about a N60 or N80 valve. Is this something I can buy and replace myself. Most of my mechanical experience is related to working on a 85 CJ7 with an inline 6cyl or Chevy trucks. If the N valve is a easy fix, any instructions and pictures of how to do this.

View 4 Repliesso my girls car is throwing an evap code (P0442) small leak detected. I bought a new oem gas cap and replaced the purge valve solenoid under the hood. that didn't work, CEL still comes on about 100mi after clearing the code.
I have checked the rubber hoses that were attached to the purge valve solenoid when i replaced it and they are fresh, no dry rot or cracks that i can see. The hose on one side goes to a hard line that runs under the car to the back, the hose on the other side of the solenoid runs under the intake to the throttle body. That hose was fine as well. Connections were tight and i even put better clamps on the hose ends that attach to the solenoid. So I have ruled out that portion of the system (under the hood).
I also removed the rear seat to access the fuel pump. All those connections seem nice and tight, I don't smell any strong gas fumes indicating a leak so i don't think the fuel pump gasket is the problem either. Finally, i checked out the hard lines running under the car front to back and I see no apparent or obvious damage. I assume my next step is to pull off the rear passenger wheel well liner and asses the charcoal canister and the LDP connections, correct??
The last thing I will mention is, Idid notice the 2 fuel lines that attach to the fuel regulator are in pretty rough shape, however not leaking any fuel. Are both of these lines actual liquid fuel lines? I am thinking one of them is a vapor return which may be part of the EVAP system. If it's dry-rotted and leaking vapors could that be the culprit??
Wife's car had a check engine light this morning, code is PO456, small evap leak, I took gas cap off cleaned the filler neck and solenoid the gas cap seal, and reset the light. I filled her car up on Sunday (2011 Sonata 2.4 80000 miles). Where to go next if light comes back on? Purge valve ?
View 9 Replies2009 santa fe 67000 miles. Replaced fuel senders approx a month ago. All was fine. On about the 3rd fill up the cel came on. Code was for small leak evap. checked the gas cap, no problems. Replaced the purge valve and disconnected the battery while doing so. Cel light went off and stayed off thru one tank of gas. Filled up again and thought I detected a little fuel smell shortly after and cel came on again. I only smell fuel when its full and down to just before 3/4's. The light came on right before 3/4's. My husband is beyond frustrated and wants to smash the car lol. Once I get him calmed down where should we be looking for a leak and how to fix it? We can't afford a dealership bill right now and of course it's due for inspection next month.

The only answer I got in the DIY section is to check around the fuel senders again but I'm leery to do it as I can't see how there would be a leak there, the covers go on SO hard even with that tool.
I had a check engine light cane on. I took it for it to get checked and they gave me this code- P0457 EVAP small leak detected. ECM has detected a large leak in the EVAP System during a system monitor test.
The paper said I had a leak in the Evap canister or hose. I took the truck to a mechanic and was told I had Bad oxygen sensors. Can Bad/Dirty oxygen sensors make this error code come up?
Exactly where the oxygen sensors are? I was told they were behind the mufflers but I didn't see any and the diagram I found was not accurate.

Okay, so a few weeks ago, my tire blew out on the freeway. Of course my spare wasn't in there and when I got one I couldn't get the lugs loosened. My 4way was too big on all sides. It was late, I am a single mother of two young kids so I had no choice but to drive slowly to get it off the freeway. The next morning I came back fully prepared, got my car in to get a new tire. I have been driving with ONE code for my CEL, but at the shop (where I use to work) I used the scanner and it threw 5 codes.
P0300 Random misfire
P0442 Small EVAP leak detected (this one was already there)
P0420 Catalyst system below threshold bank 1
P0301 Misfire cyl 1
P0303 Misfire cyl 3
My beautiful love is an 02 Jetta 2.0 4 Cyl. Now, since 4 of these codes popped up AFTER my first blowout (I turn 30 next month, knock on wood)
Did driving my car at 5 mph about a mile and a half (everywhere up until the gas station was NO PARKING) do something to my car? All of a sudden, any in town driving ESP IDLING makes my check engine light blink and my car has no power I just have to pull over wherever I am. I checked the car out myself on the side of the road and my cat was glowing. After this I do not drive my car.
So, what should I do. I did a tune up. Should I replace the 02 sensors then the cat?
I have a 2005 1.8 TJetta GLI owned for about 2 months now. Gas cap warning pops up then goes away when I turn off the car then check engine light comes on. I've change the gas cap to new oem one changed the purge valve [URL] .... After a couple of weeks same issues again brought it to my mechanic he ran a leak detector and told me that there are Evap leaks. I read somewhere that I might need a need charcoal canister and a fuel tank.
View 12 RepliesGot a CEL tonight while driving. Originally I was driving and the light came on saying that my gas cap was loose. I corrected the problem when I got home and tightened again. The light stayed on however. I ran a scan with the OBDII and it gave me a code for EVAP- Very Small Leak .
I was reading around and some people suggested the MAF. Which would make sense because I recently had all of that stuff off and gave the engine a deep cleaning while it was exposed. I just don't see how the MAF could relate to the code my car is pushing?
I have a 2011 F-250 6.2l with a P0456 code. Is there a common fix for this issue?
View 9 Replies2009, 89K miles ... As title states, check engine light came on today and after the codes were pulled, I got P0496. It was referred to as "Large EVAP system detected". I'm guessing this may have something to do with the fuel vapor management system but not sure what's a sure bet to check.
View 6 RepliesSecondary air injection system leak detected-Bank 1 & 2... 2003 miles on my car and the CEL pops on this morning. VCV bodies are being replaced tomorrow. The tech didn't fully understand what parameters to test for or what conditions would be present to set this code, I can't say that I do either... the flapper could possibly play a role in this..?

The attached picture (at an angle) shows the hole in the small line attached to the fuel neck filler exactly behind where the plastic wheel well cover touches it. Just ordered a new one from rockauto for about 65 shipped.
View 5 RepliesI've gotten the P0442 "small leak - intermittent" code and "service now" warnings on my 2007 2.0T Passat. I have also occasionally gotten the "check gas cap" warning and icon on the dash, but it always goes away quickly. The car runs fine. The VCDS scan shows as follows:

If I clear this code, it comes back within a day or two of driving, but not immediately. I have already replaced the gas cap and N80 valve. The other component I'm aware of possibly failing is the check valve. It's just downstream of the N80 valve, circled in red here:.
I put a vacuum on this part, and it had a very slow leak, losing about 3psi (starting from 20psi) every minute. That seems too small a leak for this to be a problem? Is this thing supposed to be absolutely air tight? Since this part is more expensive ($80) and bit more hassle to replace than the N80 valve, I'd like to know more about this before I just blindly replace it.
If this check valve isn't the problem, then what to check? Although the car runs fine, I need an inspection and would prefer to not have to clear the codes and hope for the best just before taking it in.

View 14 RepliesMy CEL came on a few weeks ago on my 2010 gti, I scanned it and got a code for evap (P0456). I figured it was from filling the tank while the car was running, so I cleared it and went on with my week. About a week later it came back on and when I scanned it, I got the same thing. I haven't had time to smoke test the system but the last couple days i have heard a clicking/tapping noise coming from the rear passenger side of the car. Could the flapper in the filler neck be malfunctioning or gas cap be leaking.
View 2 Replies2001 Ranger-4 Liter-169,000 Odometer Miles ... Over the past year I would get an occasional CEL indicating PO442 Leak Detected (small leak). I would simply erase it. Now it's occurring more frequently at approximately 300 odometer miles.
There must be lots a places for a small leak to develop. But, I am thinking that there might be one or two places that are somewhat common.
2008 with 165K. I had the fuel pump replaced then started getting this code. Garage said they did a smoke test could not find any leak. I then replaced this part (CCV #31453-3K500 / picture attached) I still get the code.
