I started to notice a slight whine when I turn the wheel. My fluid is at low but it's pretty dark and I'm not sure if it was ever changed or when. I have 100k miles. What fluid should I use?
View 10 RepliesI bought an 04 F150 SCrew 5.4 3V a while back. The power steering fluid level keeps dropping. I have topped off the power steering reservoir at least 3 times in the last month and a half.
What's got me baffled is I can't find evidence of a leak anywhere. The hoses, the pump, or on the belt. I've crawled over & under it. I can't find anything anywhere.
Took delivery of my 2015 GTI a few weeks ago. Overall the car is great, but I have a feeling the tires that came with it just plain suck. They are Pirelli P7 Cinturato A/S. According to Tire Rack, these are grand touring tires?! Not exactly what I'd expect to be put on a GTI. Anyway, I've noticed that at almost exactly between 60mph-70mph there is a "whine" sound coming from them, also just the slightest vibration in the steering wheel. At every other speed they are relatively quiet and the wheel is absolutely dead solid, no vibration. Could these tires just be of relatively poor quality? Should I have them put on a balancing machine to see if everything checks out? I'm assuming these were balanced on a Road Force machine at the factory since that is the OEM for VW/Audi, but I'm not 100% sure obviously.
View 16 RepliesI just recently had a new pressure hose (had a leak) replaced on the power steering pump but there is a slight squeaking noise when I turn the wheel. the mechanic says it'll go away after a week or so because of the new fluid that was put in? Is this correct?

Is this from the vibration or is the power steering system vibrating. I have had this truck for two weeks and it has 135k on it. It is the 5.4 motor...
View 1 RepliesI own a 2007 GX470. It has suddenly developed a loud whine. We replaced the power steering fluid (which we were told was filthy) but the whine is still there. The mechanic has suggested we drive it for about 500 miles to see if the noise disappears. I'm not crazy about driving it with the loud noise but don't mind. He says the car is safe to drive.

View 11 RepliesI have a 2006 RX 330 with 116,000 miles. I noticed that i had a leak and the power steering oil level was low. I went under the car and looks like the power steering hose is leaking. The dealer wants $352 for hose and $325 for labor. I called auto parts stores and they say its a dealer item only. Someone told me I could have a hose company rebuild it for a lot less.
View 5 RepliesI recently was looking over fluids and whatnot in my 08 Camry, and the power steering fluid level was at the upper line for hot about 3 hours after I drove it (about 7pm). Checked again at noon the next day, still didn't budge. I know this is something fairly new, earlier in the year it was normal.The steering feels a little tough too. It might be me, I've been driving a 2011 Sienna with the EPS, but I don't remember it being this resistant.
Now the car has over 43k on it, and it recently had the water pump replaced about two months ago put in the the dealer (I noticed this, not the dealer), along with front struts and an oil change. Nothing mentioned about the Power Steering or anything, but it seems abnormally high. I am not sure if any of the PS lines had to be removed to do the job (water pump or struts), but if it was, it seems that it might have not been properly bleed. I did try turning to full lock a few times, to the point where the revs drop and it squeals a little (not sure if that is a pump issue either, not the drop in revs but the noise)
I am just trying to figure out why I have a high level of fluid now, and the power steering feels a little weak.
My 2004 Rx 330 with 109k miles has a very faint slight sqeek after I start the car. As soon as I start to drive forward , even a couple feet, it goes away. Power Steering fluid us full. Is this anything I should be concerned about at all, can I get rid of sound, and why is it happening?

View 4 RepliesI have a 2004 Santa Fe 3.5L with 85K miles. TB, WP and all belts changed at 75K. Have had this whine noise when I turn right, very high pitch noise. On top of this there is now Power Steering fluid leaking from the reservoir and base and brackets are full of fluid... Needless to say I assume it is the reservoir seals giving up but why the noise only when I turn right? No noise when I turn left.
What could it be? Also where can I find parts online that are cheaper than the stealership? I called them and they quoted me $72.00 for this piece of plastic!!
What else should I change? There is also some "oil/fluid" coming down a pressure hose but I believe this is due to the oil dripping from the reservoir...
Any manuals I could use to view this? I bought the Haynes manual and it's worthless!
I have a '07 RX350. My steering wheel recently started having a squeaking noise when you turn it right, or left. This has nothing to do with the motor to extend or retract. You can hear the noise when you turn it ever so slightly back and forth (whether car is running, or not). I have seen other threads that talk about a grommet needing greese between the steering wheel and column, but not enough detail for me to determine what they mean. Also, if that's the case, I am not sure how you get to tha area?
View 4 RepliesI've got a 2007 rx 350. The steering wheel is locked and the key wont turn. I've tried everything, forcing the steering wheel left and right, forcing the gear shifter to neutral and moving the car. I even tried to spray some wd-40 on the key and then trying it.
View 14 RepliesSo recently, my car started making whining noises upon turning the steering wheel during cold starts. Now, it does it when the car is warmed up too. From what I can hear, its only during slow speeds. Can't take my car to the dealership anymore cause they will charge me $140 diagnostic fee for whatever issues I'm having due to my car being "tampered" with previously. (It's all stock now).
View 4 RepliesI've got about 27k on my GTI, and have just noticed some faint, but odd steering / power assist issues.
Relevant mods - koni coils. Have had these for about 15k, recently raised for winter travel, then lowered back to 24.25 ftg. Conti DWS with about 3k on them.
Anyway, other day (while in brief winter height) at parking lot speed, slight turn, I noticed a very faint pulsing through steering wheel. Was not there minutes later.
Lowered car back, drove for a few days, nothing unusual.
Drove from SF > LA yesterday and had an odd feeling at speed on freeway. It was like a bit of resistance turning the wheel off center. Almost like there is a center detent, which i have never noticed before. Once off center, all feels normal. It was super windy out and thought that was causing this, but continued throughout drive.
I don't think that this is the tires, it's more mechanical than that.
I've had my 2008 RX350 for 2.5 yrs now and just love it! However, over the last 8 months or so, I've been having a strange annoying problem. And a few times, the car has left me stranded. What happens is I turn the key and my first indicator is that the steering wheel doesn't adjust and I know the car is not going to start. However, the radio may work, dash lights work, steering wheel is not locked. It seems entirely dead as if the battery is dead. The car may start 15 min later or may take 3 hours then decide to start.
A strange thing is, is the windows don't work following these episodes which normally signify a battery failure, however the battery is not very old, otherwise performs perfectly and the dealership tested it and say it's good. Because this is so intermittent, they couldn't re-enact the problem so I'm stuck with being stranded again....usually 6 weeks later. The dealership has no answers. I was lucky last night because the car started after 15 min. 6 weeks ago, I was stranded 50 miles away from home where I had to leave the car overnight after trying for 3 hours to get is started.
The next morning, it promptly started. I am at a total loss and it makes me nervous to drive. My husband who works for a chevy dealer and knowledgeable with cars is stumped. He asks the question, could there be a computer malfunction after so many starts which would answer the 6 wk consistency for which this happens? Should we just replace the battery even though we have no reason to suspect?
I have a lexus rx 330. Pump started making noise and low on fluid. We replaced all the belts and new pump. After installing new pump it was leaking from fill cup cap when driving also making a lot of noise on cold start. Mechanic said new pump was bad so we put in another one. Car ran fine as soon as we put it in and bleed good. Following morning again a lot of noise on cold start and noise goes away about 10 minutes but again small amount of fluid leaking from cap on fill cup. I replaced the rubber ring on cap to get a tight seal but again nothing.
View 6 RepliesYesterday the power steering exploded on our 2008 Lexus RX 350 spewing power steering fluid all over the under carriage of the car and the garage floor. Left a trail every where we went. The loss of fluid caused the power steering to quit working. I had no prior signs of any leaks of any kind and no noise or symptoms from the steering prior to this. Had this happened on the highway at speed, I don't know what could have happened.
Loss of steering and the catalytic converters covered in oil could have resulted in a fire and or wreck. I see on line that power steering leaks seem to be a problem with many Lexus models. I have heard that a screen/filter in the power steering solenoid can clog causing the pressure in the system to go sky high blowing the rack seals. Some have said that by cleaning the filter and flushing the system that the problem can be solved without having to replace the rack and pinion.
My 2005 RX330 has 140,000 kms...and I am now witnessing frequent periods of hard steering. I even sometimes find that after I turn a corner, the steering wheel doesn't return back to straight as I move through the turn - I have to forcefully return the steering back to straight steering. There is plenty of power steering fluid, and there are no abnormal whining noises from the power steering assembly. And since the ease of power steering does still work...I suspect that a ball joint needs looked at.
View 14 RepliesI am trying to remove the engine cover on the passenger side of the engine bay so that I can access the power steering fluid reservoir. What is the procedure for removing the plastic clips, rivets or whatever they are and also how do you reinstall them? This is a hair brained design if I ever saw one!
