Last week, on our mercury monterey, we found that the level of power steering fluid had dropped and steering was making squeaking noise while turning. Filled up the fluid and it worked. Today when checked again, i am seeing drop in level again. So certainly there is some leak. Can we find it at home? Also is it safe to fill the fluid and drive or should we get it fixed asap?
View 6 RepliesI have owned 64 Mercury Monterey since new. Power steering control valve was leaking. I replaced the original, control valve, power cylinder, pump and hoses with new parts. I bled system and now I do not have power steering at low speed as in when trying to park the car. Parts store exchanged new parts thinking one may hjave been defective and still same problem except this time the control valve leaked all the fluid from the cap that covers the spool adjusting nut. I don't know what to do??
View 2 RepliesMy van was pulling to the right so I had it aligned. It drove great for a couple of weeks with only minor drifting to the right when I took my hand off the steering wheel. I also had the tires balanced and rotated at the same time and the guy said that it may pull because of the wear on the tires. Now, which is about 2 1/2 months after, if I take my hand off the steering wheel the van will immediately veer to the right. I have to keep my hand on the steering wheel at all times. Also, the tires are roaring. Of course I figured they would roar a little being rotated but 2 1/2 months later??? What in the world could be causing all of this?
View 5 RepliesI own a 2009 Scion tC, has about 70k miles on the car. I am experiencing a squeaky noise when turning the steering wheel left or right, as well as accelerate and braking. A friend and I jacked up the car, listen to the noise while the engine was running. We were able to duplicate the noise and it seems like its coming from the tie rod area, inner tie rod that is connected to the rack and pinion. Do it needs to be greased? keep in mind that for my car, i will have to replace the whole tie rod, can't grease it because it doesn't have a Zerk fitting. Also, when i push down on the passenger side fender, the squeaky noise reappear. noise is coming from passenger side. This has been going on for about 2 months now.
View 2 RepliesOur 05 Monterey has this problem at around 45-50mph speeds. At this speed when we step on gas the we feel the vibrations of slow jerking like misfiring and some rough driving experience. This does not occur when cruising around 60/70mph. But if you have to brake and the speed drops below 45, then while accelerating the above problem is experienced. The car also does not accelerate fast enough. The car has around 110k on it. What kind of maintenance does this need? Is it very serious and need repairs right away? It was not a daily driver car, but now has become one (30 miles) for work.
View 8 RepliesThis is for our 2005 Mercury Monterey. The check engine light is on and the code says P0193, Fuel rail pressure sensor circuit high input. Last week we were waiiting in he car with it running on idle and heat running, about 5-10 min, later the the light came on and has remained on, so checked for the code and above code displayed. Possible causes/fixes could be broad as per the sheet printed at ORailey's for this vehicle, but based on above info can it be narrowed down? How urgent the repair is, needed to show right away? What could be done at home before taking it in? car has around 108k on it.
View 5 RepliesOur 05 mercury monterey is riding rough and the check engine light is blinking all of a sudden. Two days back while driving home it was raining and we accidentally drove through a puddle, did not notice due to night time. After that it suddenly the light started to blink and engine felt rough. Checked the code yesterday morning and it showed cylinder 3 misfiring, no other codes came up. No one was available to check it yesterday and today. Have not started it again. Anything can be done before taking to the mechanic? I believe the number 3 cylinder is at the back side and not accessible easily. What could have happened?
View 19 RepliesI noticed over the last week that there was a pretty loud whine associated with turning the steering wheel. I checked the fluid level and it didn't seem low. I added a touch just to make sure. Took it into the dealership today and they called back and told me there's a bunch of fluid on the bottom splash pan. They haven't said what the culprit is yet. 46k miles on the car.
View 6 RepliesI was driving home the other day when i heard a groaning when turning. i stopped to check the power steering fluid at O'PepZone and it was really low. i bought some fluid poured it in while the car was running. it foamed a bit from all the air but then the PSF started emptying out of the reservoir underneath the car.
By the time i got home it was groaning and basically empty of PSF again. when i crawled under the car, i saw a lot of fluid on the passenger (right ) side of the car by the subframe and a little bit by the driver (left) side of the car. the leaks seem to be from the ends of the rack and pinion. no detectable leaks by the hose/hard line connections.
Other than the leak(s), the steering has felt very good. no play to speak of and no weird sounds either.
This makes me wonder if i somehow damaged the seals when i installed my PSS9 coilovers....

This happens as well when I am going over bumps in a parking lot or somewhere at a low speed. The car itself turns fine, not sticking or power steering loss. So I am not quite sure whats going on here.. At 71k miles 2010.
View 3 RepliesI have a power steering pump that makes a moaning noise when turning. Normally this means your fluid is low, but mine is full. Is it possible the reservoir is clogged not allowing fluid into the pump? When you take the cover off the reservoir the fluid is frothy so you know the pump is cavitating.
View 4 RepliesHere's my problem, I have a B5.5 1.8 5speed and my power steering makes a whining noise when Im turning. I checked the fluid and it's full. A few years ago on a roadtrip from CA to NM, my PS cooler hard pipe had a leak and drained all the fluid. It's was 11pm and still had 30 miles to get home and all I could get was Pennzoil PS fluid from Walgreens. So for the past 3 years I've been using Pennzoil PS fluid. Just recently it started making this noise. Luckily I picked up a 98 AEB parts car for $300 and my question is,
Would a power steering pump from my B5 fit my B5.5??? And, If the problem isn't my pump, would the PS rack fit also??
I have a mkiv gli. With 41k miles on it. And when I turn my wheels either way it makes a loud strenuous noise that seems like my power steering cause its only noisy when I turn.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2004 Santa Fe 3.5L with 85K miles. TB, WP and all belts changed at 75K. Have had this whine noise when I turn right, very high pitch noise. On top of this there is now Power Steering fluid leaking from the reservoir and base and brackets are full of fluid... Needless to say I assume it is the reservoir seals giving up but why the noise only when I turn right? No noise when I turn left.
What could it be? Also where can I find parts online that are cheaper than the stealership? I called them and they quoted me $72.00 for this piece of plastic!!
What else should I change? There is also some "oil/fluid" coming down a pressure hose but I believe this is due to the oil dripping from the reservoir...
Any manuals I could use to view this? I bought the Haynes manual and it's worthless!
My Elantra has about 5,500 miles on it now. I went on a road trip up to Washington D.C. during spring break about two weeks ago.
Anyway, it has been making a squeaking noise when I turn right at around 15-20 mph. It makes a sound similar to a swing when its swinging. It's slightly high pitched and sounds like it's metal on metal. It's getting kind of annoying and I think I might take it in to have it checked out.
I just bought a 99 f150. Its in great shape only 65000 on it but there is a hissing swooshing sound when turning the wheel... not really any brake sounds. The truck has been maintained and I dont see any leeks in the ps system hoses. I didn't know anything about the atf fluid in the truck... and I haven't added either ps or atf fluid to it. I'm wondering if that is maybe something the dealer i bought it from did. or maybe one of the shops the previous owner did. Would ps fluid cause these kinds of sounds? Do I need a flush of the system.. How to do that.

For a month or two, after the car got warmed up, I'd hear a whine/hum noise when I slowed to turn or reduced speed. The noise was much more noticeable when the car had been running at least 15-20 minutes, but I did occasionally hear it when the car was somewhat cool still. Never had a problem steering during this time, even with the noise... but I eventually figured out that slowing down and/or turning brought it on. So I took it to a mechanic.
They showed me bubbles coming from the power steering reservoir, and said I needed a new PS pump and pressure hose, along with a flush/new fluid. I paid for all of that.
Next day: The car would become hard to turn when I made a tight turn into a parking spot... again, not a constant thing, but only when turning to park and going slow. The noise APPEARED to be gone, but this new issue worried me so I took it back. They put a different pump on (no charge), thinking the other may have been defective.
Next Day: I hear the whine again on my way home from work. When I get home, I park, leave it running, and pop the hood. There's a fast drip bubbling from beneath the reservoir cap and running down to the pavement. First thing the next morning I return to mechanic. He says the first two pumps were the same brand and both "remanufactured" so he switches to a different brand -- this one brand new, not "remanufactured" -- and installs that one.
A half hour later, I get home. Hearing that same whine/hum, I lift the hood. Fluid is pouring out from beneath the cap in a steady, unbroken stream (not a drip, but a stream). So I took it back to the mechanic (who to his credit, has charged me nothing since the initial new pump installation). What could cause the power steering fluid to gush out from the reservoir cap when the car gets hot? I have a brand new pump and pressure hose. What could cause this condition..
