My 2003 V6 has an odd smell coming from under the hood. Doesn't smell like gas or oil. It kinda smells like burning plastic and it may be coming from the area around the coolant reservoir.

View 1 RepliesI've had my B6 with leatherette for just over two weeks now and I'm having trouble with a strong interior smell. It is a chemical/fishy smell that builds up when the car sits with the windows closed. I don't think it's coming from the vents because the smell goes away partially when the A/C is on. It is not related to outside temperature or direct sun. I didn't smell it during the test drive but I did right after I picked it up. I suspect the smell might be from the scotchguard treatment the dealer did during prep but I'm not sure. I've washed down the interior with Woolite a couple times and had the interior detailed professionally but the smell comes right back. Otherwise I love this car. I have an appointment at the dealer on Friday to see what they say.

Soon i realized that from time to time there would be a bit of smoke form under the hood I looked under the car and noticed that oil is dripping onto the cat but i am not sure from where. There is not alot of room in the back of these engines to see.
View 3 RepliesMy 2001.5 Passat traditionally does not start easily when it is less than 6degrees outside. Today it was that cold..it started easily..but about 30 minutes into my drive to work..I realized it was a little smoky and exhaustish smelling in the car..once I realized it wasn't the car next to me..i realized if I turned off the heat..the smell went away..but at the stoplight..i could see smoke coming from under the hood..out the corner by the passenger/dashboard... Car has 80,000, recent oil change, what it is?
View 1 RepliesI have a 2001 F150 4x4 supercrew XLT 4.6 with 150,000 miles. I have a few things happening in the truck, and although it is still running for now, I would like to get ahead of this before something catastrophic happens, and I don't know if everything is related, or everything is falling apart separately.
1. I have been noticing a burning smell coming from under the hood after driving, every time I drive, but no noticeable leaks, and oil level is fine. I have seen light smoke coming from the exhaust but inconsistently. A mechanic said it was probably the valve cover seals leaking to the manifold, but I would think there would eventually be less oil on the dipstick?
2. When on the gas, over 2200 RPMish, the air and AC switches to defrost. It seems like a vacuum line leak somewhere, but can't find it.
3. Generally, the truck seems sluggish, sometimes unwilling to shift gears or accelerate at freeway speeds. Not sure if its the transmission going out again (had it replaced at 125000), or spark plugs?
I have a P2 and after oil change, I noticed a bit strange engine sound while the engine hood was open. Is that sound normal? Usually I do not notice much of engine sitting as driver inside the car.
View 13 RepliesMy EB makes a moaning noise when I am accelerating up to speed when driving "old Man " style. I guess its the turbo blow off valve(s) like used to happen on my old 7.3's. I hope its not anything to worry about. The truck runs string and gets 18 mpg mixed driving. I do get bon it a lot too.

I've got a strange squeal sound coming from under the hood only when truck is cold? It sounds like a bearing and after it gets heated up the sound stops. I talked with a guy thats a cummins guy and he said he had a similar issue and he had to replace the bearing in the turbo? Also when truck is warm it will still do it, like for instance, if I run in a store and truck idles for 5-10 mins it will do it only if I romp on it for a short while like 2-3 mins then again goes away. And if I'm idling or in neutral, hot/cold, it does not do it, it seems to be only under a load. Pull a 26 foot boat no problems.
What could be making the strange pumping sound coming from under my hood after I shut off the truck?? It sounds like a small compressor or pump running.
View 4 RepliesI have a strange (musky) smell coming from my air vents when i turn on the air. I was told by the dealer that this could be mold growing inside the vents because I use the AC a lot. Is there any cure for this besides going to the dealer? they told me that they can partial get rid of this by spraying a chemical into the vent but they cannot guarantee that it will work.
View 19 RepliesOver the past few months I have noticed a line running across the front of my hood where the paint is starting to come off. The rest of the hood is starting to look like the clear coat is coming off too. I wax it every few months. This is the only part of the car that is doing this.

I've had my Prius v (lowercase v) for about 6 months now and just took it in for its 5000 mi service. There were no problems but shortly after I got it back I started noticing a really bad odor coming from somewhere in the car. Its not a moldy or mildew smell that's coming from the HVAC. I sniffed all the mats and it's not that either. From what I can tell, the smell seems to be coming from the plastics on the dashboard area, but it's really hard to tell for sure. I tried covering it up with febreeze, but the odor is too strong. It's not the smell of a rotting animal either.
Again, not from the seats, floormats, or AC system. Seems to be coming from the dashboard and/or center console area where all the buttons are. I have a baby and a carseat, but I don't feed the baby in the car, and after sniffing the carseat and rear seat area, I can confirm the smell isn't coming from there.
I'm about to take a multi-day cross-country road trip in my Prius v and would love to fix the source of the smell before I go. It's not that noticeable with the windows rolled down, but when you sit in the car for the first time in the morning, the smell is definitely noticeable, and it's not good.
The hood release strap broke on my 2003 VW Passat. It fully came out from under the hood while the hood was closed. I had the car at a shop the day before, picked-up the car at night and found the part dangling above the grill the next morning (the work included work under the hood so they were the last ones to open the hood). Of course the shop knows nothing about it and said they've never heard of this happening before. The part broke at the end under the hood that connects to the release point and cannot be repaired (two eyelets broke on this plastic part). I found the part can be bought on-line for about $11 plus shipping. Obviously the first step is I have to somehow get a tool under the hood to release the hood where the strap made the release in the past. The question is how do I do that?

On cold starts its makes a chirping sound under the hood that gets louder as you accelerate but goes away after motor warms up. The sound is similar to a loose or bad fan belt. But the noise is coming from the back passenger side of the engine when you listen under the hood.
Car also has no power. Had a good pull when i test drove the vehicle but now its a dog. It seems like its running on three cylinders or the turbo aint even working
Car is a 5 speed and its a struggle to put the car into first gear but every other gear is smooth. To get it in first you gota be stopped, put it in second then to first and you gota push the shifter left till you feel it pop in gear. Also have to hold it in 1st or it will sometimes pop out...
I have a 2002 SC430 with 130K+ miles. I have recently noticed that after some spirited driving the front of my car smells strange. I can even smell it outside of the car in the front where the radiator is. The smell is coming from the engine and through the front grill.
If I set my climate control to pull air in from the outside then the smell will get pulled into the cabin.
I checked to see if the exhaust evap hose got disconnected but it has not (can also cause smell around the car). The check engine light is not on and the temperature gauge appears normal. I've noticed my windows seems to fog up easily too now (I run the heater all the time since it's winter here), perhaps some antifreeze is getting into the climate control system? I'm hoping it's not my heater core starting to go, since that's an expensive repair.
Perhaps this could be a sign that the radiator is leaking? I got the car used and believe I have the original radiator in there.
I own a 2007 Ford Escape. Upon parking in the garage and leaving over night, I have noticed a strange smell. It is unlike any smell I know. I took the SUV to a Ford dealership and he said nothing's wrong. I was wondering if it could be brakes causing it or maybe rotors. Or bearings might have bearing on the situation. I have not noticed any fluids leaked upon the garage floor. Any clue as to what to do?
View 13 RepliesLately my 2002 v6 has been smelling like it's burning oil from under the hood. Around the front exhaust manifold, there's a wet black "powder" type substance. Oil levels are fine and the car has also been driving without any issues. The car hasn't overheated but then again, I live in NJ where the temperatures don't go above 35F.
I'll be posting a picture tomorrow.
The car has 144k and the timing belt, water pump, spark plugs were done at 120k.
I can smell antifreeze under the hood, so I took it to be pressure tested. They found no leaks, but I can still smell it. When I add it to the reservoir, it goes down. What can I do ?
View 5 RepliesI own a MkII Jetta. A buddy at work has a 2003 Passat VR6 Sedan. He parked the car in the driveway last Friday and when his wife went to go shopping on Saturday, it wouldn't start.
She says the dash lights lit up, but no crank / no start. He went out and indeed it did not start. He said while looking around he noticed a smell of smoke from around the firewall. His wife insisted they look at new cars, and they ended up buying a new Honda that same day. The plates and registration were transferred to the new Honda.
He wants the car gone and offered it to me for $1,000. Now, I know this is a pretty vague description of the problem, but since he doesn't live very close, I figured I would ask if there is a common problem to these cars? Where should I start looking?
This morning I went to drive my car and the check engine light, along with the D4 light on the dash went on. The D4 light started blinking. When I drove the car, it felt really heavy like it was not shifting right. There was also a bad smell coming from the hood. I took it to get the code read and it was P0758. There seems to be something wrong with the transmission and I am just wondering how much it will cost, and if it is worth it. The car is in great shape, I just had the timing belt changed.
