We have a 2004 Passat V6, and we've noticed at idle, the engine makes 5 or six fast ticks, stops, then goes again, over and over. I tried searching but didn't find anything relevant.
Also, sometime when the AC is on, all of a sudden the air stops coming out, but the blower still roars, then a couple seconds later the air comes rushing out of the vents again.
I finally jumped from MKII land into a new GTI . Is it normal for it to sound like a diesel when at Idle? Its only really noticeable when you lift the hood. Im used to my MKII with sticky lifters but the sound of the TSI seems a bit loud.... I haven't been able to compare it to another car.
View 8 RepliesFor those with Climatronic, you would have probably heard the noise it makes when it's adjusting vents etc on start up....like a deep ticking of sorts. Well, just recently that same type of noise is coming from the rear compartment of the car and only when coming to a stop or sitting at a light.

It explains the source of the noise in all GDI engines and proposes two solutions. One is not feasible as it would require some further development of the engine but the other solution may be practical for the DIY enthusiast. The question would be what type of material to use which would withstand the conditions under the hood?

About a two weeks ago, I had a CEL pop up. I brought it in to the stealership to get it scanned. I don't recall what the exact code was, but the description was something to the effect of "Cooling System Performance." I hadn't noticed that the engine temp was any different than it had ever been, so we kinda figured it was just a bad sensor. We popped the hood just to take a look at things, but he didn't really notice that anything was off. I thought the engine sounded a little difference. It wasn't idling rough, but there was a very subtle ticking noise. He didn't think anything of it. So he cleared the code, and sent me on my way.
The code came back a few days later, but disappeared about a week ago. Since then, however, my .:R has been feeling a little different. Like I'm losing torque. The ticking noise has become distinctly louder, although I can only hear it when I pop the hood. Last night, i was listening to it, and there are two separate noises, coming from two different locations. One is coming from the left side of the engine, most likely from one of the belts. The other is the one that worries me the most, as it's quite a bit louder. This ticking noise seems to be coming from the engine itself. The longer I let the car idle, the louder it gets.
One of my friends took a listen, and he suggested that it could be a blown piston ring. This would explain why I'm losing torque, but I haven't noticed any blue smoke coming from my exhaust.
I have a 2012 Elantra sedan and I have a ticking noise coming from the engine.......I have had the noise since new.......but it was very faint.......it has gotten worse with time........I had mentioned this to the dealership when it was new but they said it was normal engine noise! It sounds like the older cars used to sound when there was a valve clearance problem.....but with the advent of overhead cams.....I'm not sure what the problem is.........78,000km on engine!
View 8 RepliesI have a ticking noise coming from my engine, its the loudest when cold, it only happens at about 1800 rpm and up, and it only happens when I'm pressing on the gas pedal. I looked around my engine, and the noise seemed like it was coming from my fuel injectors, however, the noise doesn't change speed. Can it still be my fuel injectors? or is it something else?
The car is a 1996 Mitsubishi 3000 GT Base (non-turbo), 5-speed manual.
I have an 07 Camry with an I4 engine and there are times when I am driving with the two front windows down and I hear a ticking/clicking noise coming from the engine as if the engine is brittle.

When the vehicle is idling there is a tick-tick noise coming from the engine area that does not go away. I initially thought this noise was due to it being 0 Degree C but the noise continued for the duration of my 45 minute drive. Later in the day the noise was consistent was did not silence.
Sound coming from the engine and it is coming from the passengers side of the engine. The year is 2003, LS model, and four wheel drive. Well, I took it in yesterday and the mechanic said it was the "Camshaft" and this was a normal sound. Not to mention I have had this vehicle in for 6 other problems: 3 times for the four wheel drive light malfunctioning, 2 times for the service engine light coming on and then they had to replace a seal on the left front deferential because it was leaking oil.
View 14 RepliesI noticed my sound a few weeks ago but wasn't as loud as the videos I've seen. Didn't really bother me. I did notice today that the sound was a lot louder . The only thing that has changed is i had my oil changed over the weekend with mobil 1 5w-30 fully synthetic. Now I don't know if that could factor into the sound getting louder.
I am really hoping its just a cat and i can replace my headers and everything is good. i just got the car with 19k miles on it and do not have a warranty.
I have been worrying about "engine noises" for years and at this point if its something i can't fix without dumping thousands of dollars into it, then so be it. I am just going to enjoy the car too the fullest. Plus, once i get full exhaust, it will work with canceling out the ticking sound.
I have a 2004 Prius that has a ticking noise coming from the engine compartment It speeds up and slows down with the idle of the engine or the pressing of the accelerator. Appears to be coming from the passenger side (US). No diagnostic codes have come up.
View 15 RepliesI have a 2012 Sonata, just last December I started hearing like a ticking noise as I was driving. At first I didn't think nothing of it as it stopped. a few days later and moving forward the noise becomes intermittent. I took it to the dealer several times and they couldn't hear it until I had a technician drive with me and he heard it. As they began to examine my car I was told that the noise is coming for the high pressure valve and it is normal. The thing is the car has never made this noise until last year.

However, on my way home I noticed an almost ticking noise coming from the engine bay whenever I would accelerate. There wasn't a loss of power, but with the radio off and air off as well you could clearly hear it.
I have a 2005 mk4 Gli 1.8T with 69,000 miles. This ticking sound that I hear from the inside of my car is coming from the right side of the engine bay. It starts during idle. It starts ticking and gets a little faster and then stops for a few seconds then begins again. It fully stops while driving. I changed tensioner, belt, serpentine belt, water pump, and oil change with mobile 1 synthetic 0w-40.

View 6 RepliesI have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am with about 160K miles on it. Over the last month or two I have noticed a persistent ticking noise coming from inside the engine compartment. It sounds like it might increase in frequency along with the engine speed. It is loudest when I pull up in a drive-thru or next to another car and roll down my window. It is audible when sitting or while moving. Doesn't seem to make a difference if the car is hot or cold. I checked the oil and it appears to be full. It sounds like it's coming directly out of the engine block itself. I get the oil changed every 3,000 miles like clockwork.

Now Is it anything I should worry about? Car has 72000 on it. Always used synthetic Mobil 1 5w 30.
This is on a completely cold start up, 30 degrees outside. Only makes the noise until car warms up. Anything I can do to prevent this? Or is it not something to worry about? Should I just let the car warm up a little before I drive it?

I'm a happy owner of a tdi sel with around 5k on the odometer. I hear a ticking noise in the engine bay right after start up intermitently. It lasts about 3 seconds, then goes away. It sounds like an LP gas ignitor...click click click Do any other tdi owners hear this? If so, what it is?
