Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2001 - Hot Plastic Or Wire Smell From Vents

I have an 01 GTI GLX with climatronic, and I've noticed this hot plastic or hot wire smell in the vents. Yes the fan wire gets hot when the car is hot and AC is on. But I don't think that's it. I've torn the passenger side apart, took the blower motor out, not it. The vent / recirculate motor is external to the vents, the only other place is behind the radio for the other one. What else is internal, if anything, that could be causing this smell? I'm concerned that something will melt or burn up.

I've been wondering if the ecm in the cowl would be getting hot but I can't smell anything with the plastics on. I would say it does seem to occur after driving for about ten minutes in town. But it also seems like it's there when I first start it up also.

Passat (B5) :: Gas Leak Smell Comes Through Vents When The Air Is On

It seems my car likes leak gas smell, its not leaking gas but the smell is strong and comes through my vents when the air is on, and also is in the car after high speeds (like getting off highway and stop at stop sign) also will work its way into my car when not running..

I noticed when i bought the car that the previous owner had replaced things under the hood and took off ALL the covers under the hood (the plastic covers under the hood, for example the v6 30 valve piece and the one running horizontal for the air cleaner across over top the battery), so my air cleaner is exposed at the top, so could this have any effect on the smell?

Passat (B5) :: No Heat / Sweet Smell Through Vents

I noticed a few months ago I wasn't getting much heat from my 99 Passat. I had the cooling system flushed and checked. Still no heat even after having all this done. Not long afterwords I started noticing that sweet smell through the vents, but couldn't find any leaks. I checked the expansion tank and it seemed to be slightly low so I added some coolant just to top it off and there it was. Steam started rolling up from the drivers side where the coolant had dripped on the exhaust and that's when I found the leak. I took the screws out that hold the tank to the bracket and discovered the leak coming from a short tube that appears to connect to nothing leaking coolant. Now here's my question, is the tank suppose to have a hole in it ? I thought it was suppose to be pressurized. What I don't figure is why didn't the shop notice it when they were refilling the system.

Passat (B6) :: Musty Smell Coming Out Of AC Vents

So, at 14k it looks like I have that musty smell coming out of the AC vents. I've seen a TSB on here that addresses it. Hopefully my first trip to the dealership for anything other than an oil change doesn't present me with any other surprises.

Passat (B5) :: Oily Smell Coming From The Inside Air Vents

When the car is warm with the A/C off(vent air only) you can smell an oily smell coming from the inside air vents. The smell is also evident from the engine compartment when exiting the car. I do not have any oil leaks that I can find and have been good about cleaning up spilled oil when changing the filter. I've had the car when new and it currently has about 63k miles on it now. The smell seems to be getting worse. No mods to the engine and everything else seems to be running well otherwise.

Passat (B5) :: 2001 - Oil Smell Coming In Through Vents Especially At Stoplights

I recently purchased a 01 Passat 1.8T and noticed a strong 'used oil' smell coming in through the vents, especially at stoplights; the vehicle continued to smell badly when parked and turned off.

After looking around the PCV system, I found a small check valve near the airbox that was dry-rotted and non-functioning. As I continued to search, I found a large PCV hose directly under the intake manifold closer to the firewall. This appears to be ~3/4" hose that appears to be missing a connector. It appears as though there was supposed to be some sort of male/male insert and some clamps that are supposed to connect these tubes.

Any diagram or a DIY replacement walk-through for the PCV sytem on the 1.8T? Now that I've found the pcv break, I'd really like to get it changed out.

Passat (B5) :: Burning Oil Smell Coming From Vents When Stopped At Lights

When stopped at lights I start to smell burning oil coming from the vents when I have the heat on. It only happens every now and then and only when you are stopped at a light. I tried letting the engine idle after driving once and I can't smell it when i open the hood. I do synthetic oil changes every 5,000 since the car was new. I don't know what it could be? My last oil change was about 2,000 miles ago so I can't see it being burn off from the last change still.

Car has 80,000, recent oil change, what it is?

Golf IV R32 :: Burnt Plastic Smell While At Stop?

So just like the title says I am experiencing a sort of burnt rubber or plastic type smell when at a stop. I feel like it would smell like a belt slipping but I have never had that issue on this car or the last one so I have no experience in pin pointing the smell. I have no noticeable changes to the power of the engine or the brakes from what I can tell.

Can a piece inside the HID be replaced. I noticed that my bulb was coming loose because every now and then the light would stop working.

I'd open the hood tighten it and all would be good for weeks sometimes months. Today it stopped and I opened it and this time it had a burning plastic smell.

Can this piece be replaced?

Golf IV R32 :: Emanating Smoke Of Plastic Smell From Sides And Back?

Today after driving in traffic for 20 mins followed by 100 for about 5 minutes I took my exit ramp and came to a light. My car started emanating smoke from the sides and back. The smoke is a classic VW smell of plastic. I sat at the light for about a minute while smoke was sporadically coming out. The light turned green and I pulled over to check this out. I can certainty smell it in my bay, interior and all around the outside of my car. My oil level is fine and the fuses on the battery are fine. The (not so accurate) temp gauge was right in the middle.

Buick - Regal :: Lights On The Instrument Panel Go Out - Plastic Burning Smell

1991 Buick Regal. I'm driving at night a few days ago and all of a sudden the lights on the instrument panel go out. The headlights are still on and the radio is still playing.

So I click the headlights on and off and the instrument panel lights come back on. The next night this happens again. This time I just give the headlight switch a little jiggle and they come back on. Tonight they go out again, jiggle the switch and they come back on. They go right back out. Jiggle the switch again and they're on.

I drive for another five minutes and now I smell plastic burning; it's the typical electrical/wire short smell. I turned the interior lights on and there was no visible smoke.

I'm going to try and pull the dash tomorrow and see what's going on in there, but they want $400 for an OEM replacement switch! I found some used ones online, but I'd have to get them mailed from a junk yard for about $50 bucks.

So I'm wondering, is there a easy/cheap way to rig a headlight switch in the interim so I don't have a fire in this thing? I don't understand why a headlight switch has so many prongs on the connector.

The only caveat is that the guy who had this car before me rigged the ignition through the headlights (I was told as some kind of security feature?) so that the car will not crank unless the headlights are on. Maybe/hopefully some shoddy wiring on that is just causing an arc.
