A friend of mine today told me a good way to find vaccum leaks with starter fluid. Lightly spray it over the vacuum lines on an idling engine until the idle speeds up. Where you were spraying when it sped up is where the leak is. Be careful as it is very flammable. [IMG] [URL] .....
View 2 RepliesQuestion. I have never used propane to find vacuum leaks. I always use starter fluid. I understand propane is better but how nuch do you use? Low volume, or a lot of propane. I just don't want to kill myself.

- Oily feel, pink color (transmission fluid)
- Noticed coming from the middle, or perhaps the front part of the engine compartment, just off center on the drivers side
- Only seen after the car sits overnight, in my garage (no dripping seen for hours after parking)
- Leaves a 10in diameter sized slick on the garage floor that I wipe up with a paper towel in the morning
Suspecting a transmission fluid leak, I paid my dealer a visit and was told, "must be another car leaking, because all your fluids are topped off, your cooling system is holding pressure and your engine compartment is clean."
My ford's 4x4 will work if I manually lock in the hubs. If i use the auto option it will not engage. I can feel the rear end diff lock when I put it in 4-low so I know the switch is working. I think it is a vacuum actuated system. How to find the leak or diagnose the problem?

I'm on the of my Latin. If I pull the throttle short and raise the rpm I hear a loud air soak. But I can't locate it. Can be the egr, lower intake upper intake or fuel interceptor. I begin to hate the car.
What are some common mk4 r32 vacuum leaks. And yes I did search. Im checking my car for any leaks that vagcom would potentially not detect.
View 9 RepliesI've had a 0401 code on my truck for the last two years. I've replaced the EGR valve and the dpfe sensor a couple of times, with fomoco parts. Ive also cleaned out the egr tube that comes off the exhaust manifold. In this time I also discovered a couple of vacuum leaks and replaced those. I changed the pcv valve, tried running 93 octane gas, and had a mechanic friend run a special smoke through the vacuum lines to find more leaks. Also put a brand new gas cap. I have an obd computer and cleared the code repeatedly but the light always returns.

View 7 RepliesMy parents 2000 Explorer is having issues...It started with check engine light...came back to Oxygen sensors...Replaced all 4....light came back...still a couple of same codes...P1151 and P0153...smoked the intake with Evap Leak Detector...have several small vacuum leaks...little at EGR (No EGR codes)...little at TPS (No TPS Codes)...Little at throttle shafts...and some coming from what looks like underneath throttle body....none of these are as much of a concern as the next thing....NOW the trans will not shift out of 1st...unless you manually shift it from Drive to 2nd...then no other gears...Reverse works fine.....
View 13 RepliesSo I have an oil leak I can't figure out. 2001 jetta vr6 5spd. The bottom of the car is covered with oil. It appears to be leaking above the transmission. It will consistently drip at idle. Oil sits on top of transmission and then Leaks down over the starter. It doesn't have any coolant leaks. Is there anything anything in that area that could leak oil that bad?

View 14 RepliesWhen I fill up my washer fluid reservoir, about half of it leaks out somewhere near the front of the passenger door and falls to the ground. Where it could be coming from? Is the rear washer hose routed through this area?
View 14 Replies1990 Buick Century w/3300 V6, fuel injection, less than 80,000 miles ... Vehicle may have had 200 miles p/yr put on it last 3 - 4 yrs. Was still regularly serviced. No previous problems no fluid leaks, clean motor.
Hesitated on hwy twice, wouldn't start after second hesitation, but did later & ran good. Wouldn't start for about 15 mins. after fueling once, but ran good when did start, had fuel pressure at sharder valve both times. Next trip after about 10 miles, started loosing power, finally quit, NO pressure at sharder valve. Towed in. Mechanic said ECM bad, changed it, ran idle, but would not accelerate, chk'd everything. Put different ECM in, same thing, idle, but won't accelerate, has chk'd fuel pressure, fuel regulator, ICM, CPS, everything can think of...
Early 70's Ford truck. The brake MC fluid is filled but not overfilled, and doesn't leak at all when the truck is parked. It can sit there for a month and never leak a drop, parked. But when I drive the truck, even just around the block, then park, and look inside the engine compartment immediately the brake MC is dripping brake fluid. It appears the leaking mode is by the fluid somehow jumping up and coming over the top edge of the MC when the truck is in motion or when the brakes are applied. All my diy'er years of replacing brake master cylinders on Ford Galaxies, VW Rabbits, Corollas, and this truck, I've never seen this kind of weird brake problem before. On this MC design it seems there's sort of a rubber baffle inside the lid of the MC, and that's present and accounted for.
View 17 RepliesMy mother owns a 1996 Olds Eighty-Eight that has developed a magical ability plus another problem that multiple mechanics have failed to solve. Magic: The car, a few miles after an oil change and verifying the correct amount of oil was put in at the change, magically generates more oil to the point the level on the stick doubles. Problem: At the same time, the car has significant loss of transmission fluid, but no leak large enough to account for the loss. I suspect the two are linked, and one mechanic even said that there was a valve or something that could go bad or get stuck and allow the transmission fluid to get pulled into the oil, but no one has been able to definitively reach an answer or fix the issue.

View 4 RepliesI'm getting ready to work on a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire for a co-worker. They told me that brake fluid leaks out where the fluid reservoir attaches to the master cylinder. Could that be a bad master cylinder or something with the brake booster? It looks like there is a lot of sludge in the reservoir.
View 8 RepliesI have a 2004 Santa Fe 3.5L with 85K miles. TB, WP and all belts changed at 75K. Have had this whine noise when I turn right, very high pitch noise. On top of this there is now Power Steering fluid leaking from the reservoir and base and brackets are full of fluid... Needless to say I assume it is the reservoir seals giving up but why the noise only when I turn right? No noise when I turn left.
What could it be? Also where can I find parts online that are cheaper than the stealership? I called them and they quoted me $72.00 for this piece of plastic!!
What else should I change? There is also some "oil/fluid" coming down a pressure hose but I believe this is due to the oil dripping from the reservoir...
Any manuals I could use to view this? I bought the Haynes manual and it's worthless!
I have a 2000 Chevy Monte Carlo that has me stumped as to why it leaks. The driver side axle seal leaks fluid only after a drive. I have replaced the axle twice and seal 6 times and it still leaks. I am stumped on this one. Unless I got a bad axle twice that the diameter of the sealing surface is too small but didn't seem like it as the seal hugs the shaft.

Went out at lunch and used the automatic starter button while walking to it and wouldn't start. It turn over and wants to start you can hear it trying to catch but it won't catch unless you put some starter fluid in. Just changed all 16 spark plugs, all 8 coil packs, wires and 2 valve springs about 2 weeks ago have been running fine since and now this. What it could be?
View 15 RepliesI have a 1.8T 2000 Passat (ATW) that has an oil leak. I can't find the leak but it seems to be under the intake. It's a kind of slow leak and more annoying than anything. I replaced the valve cover gasket a couple of years but it was leaking at the back of the engine instead of the side. It may be the valve cover gasket again.
