We are only one week in to owning our 2006 Prius! Question is why does it sound like a motor whirring sound after turning it off? It only lasts 20 to 30 seconds, just wondering if this is a normal sound?
View 4 RepliesI get a grinding or whirring sound when I turn my steering wheel left or right. I gets worse if press the accelerator pedal. I believe it has something to do with the power steering but I don't know how to troubleshoot the issue....
View 5 RepliesIn the past few days, our car (2006 Prius) has begun making some louder-than-normal noises while driving. I've determined that the noise appears when you turn the wheel at all to the right (note: not just making a right turn...any degree to the right past straight is enough). It seems to be constant when the car is running, but really only becomes perceptible around 30 mph. The sound is sort of like a buzzing. Maybe a grinding, but not quite. It sounds like it might be similar to this issue (2006 Engine Noise - buzzing, especially loud on highway | PriusChat), but I can't quite be sure.
View 4 RepliesI have a concern about not hearing the whirring sound after shutdown anymore. I know that the sound comes from a small electric-pump that pumps 3 liters of coolant into a thermal container (to keep it hot) everytime I turn the hybrid system power OFF. When the power is turned back ON, the coolant is pumped back into the engine.
I've noticed that after I got an oil change and tire rotation at Pep Boys the sound is no longer there after shutdown or power up. Then after a couple of days I took the car to the dealer to fix the tire rotation (because Pep Boys didn't do a good job at rotating the tires, there was a woo woo woo sound while driving) and the dealer also did a multi-point check, but they didn't say anything was wrong with the car.
When I drive with windows down I can hear a whirring from the motor. Its like if it is low on power steering fluid. Its not constant with RPM. I am pretty sure the steering is electric but WTH can it be? I am dreading winter cause I will have windows down all the time then and I will have to crank the stereo to block it out.

View 10 RepliesI have a "05" Prius problem that I'm stumped on. I have 165k miles. I am the original owner and have maintained this car really well and it really runs incredible. I just started to hear a strange new whirring/winding sound coming from the front when driving. When accelerating it goes quiet. When I let off on the gas it starts whirring. Between 40-45 MPH if I let off on the gas it will whir but then when I drop below 40MPH it does it intermittently. It almost sounds like it is attempting to slow the car down . I've looked over the forum and other sites and hear about other sounds like this (ex: A/C motor), but nothing that matches my symptoms. I can say this, it in no way affects the performance of the car, just very annoying. If it is serious I would like to jump on it right away and try for 200K .
View 3 RepliesMy "05" Prius has 164K, I'm the original owner and I have had great success with this car. I know some owners talk about the loud whining humming sound from the A/C unit which I am aware of but this newest sound is different and after 4 hours with a Toyota tech all they can come up with is an A/C compressor going bad. I only hear this sound after I reach 40MPH+ and then decelerate. It then winds down with the speed of the car sometime intermittently. If I accelerate it goes quiet.
I've also tried speeding up to 40MPH and then move into neutral. It will stop the noise. I'm adding a video and I realize there is standard road noise but if you watch my energy monitor you will hear the noise whirring winding when the green arrows point back to the electric motor. Pay close attention to the viseo frames at 13 seconds, 22 seconds and again at 29 seconds. Turn up the volume. Of course inside the cab it is much more pronounced. I'm finding it hard to believe this is an A/C compressor. Sounds more like an electric motor whining/whirring. I'm concerned about driving my car for safety reasons.
My 2008 Prius has started making a noticeable soft whirring sound whenever the engine is running. You can hear it both inside and outside of the car. The sound lasts exactly 30 seconds, then pauses for 4 seconds, than repeats . When the car is turned off, the sound can be heard for about another 10 minutes before it shuts off entirely.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2009 Prius with about 56K miles on it that I absolutely love. Now I know from reading in the forums an my own experience that when the A/C compressor starts running you hear an electric whirring sound. My question is... is it a cause for concern when the sound it makes seems different -- the pitch sounds lower to me now. The A/C still works fine, but I didn't know if this changing sound means the compressor was on the way out.
View 13 RepliesPrius owner. I have 200,000 miles on the car and have done nothing except change the oil, tired and battery. No other maintenance was performed.
While driving straight the front wheel seems to vibrate some and make a whirring/roaring sounds. When turning to the left the noise is greatly reduced. When turning to the right it still exists.
Any potential causes? Possibly the struts? They as well as all the front end components are original.
I ventured into the garage late last night and heard a whirring noise like an electric motor coming from my Prius. I didn't have my smart key with me. I checked the doors to see if any were ajar. The whirring kept going. After a few minutes, it stopped.

View 16 RepliesMy 2006 sonata gls v6 has a whirring /oscillating sound in the front end that is getting the best of me . It is a whirring sound that increases in volume and level as I accelerate up through highway speed . When i go over a dip in the road the sound will oscillate .(change in volume)
Though the car is a 2006 with only 31,000 miles on it . I put it on jack stands and put the car in drive . The front left (drivers side cv axle has a minute wobble to it . If I hold the cv joint at the transmission tight and wiggle the tire I can detect a little play . ( maybe 1/8of an inch )The boots are intact so no grease is oozing out .
I have already changed both hub bearings in the front end and there is zero play in any of the suspension . The brake pads were replaced and the disc 's appear true (I filed of any rust on the edges )while I was into it ...
When i apply the brakes at highway speed I can feel a mild shudder in the wheel but not too bad . There is no clunking or clicking in turns nor is there any change in sound when turning the wheel while driving ....
The tires are Cooper cs4's that are a year old with no sign of abnormal wear. I rotated the tires to verify its not a tire issue. The auto transmission fluid level is normal. I am thinking about changing both cv axles. I am hoping its not an output bearing in the tranny.
2006 Subaru Outback. It has around 121000. I bought it at 113,000 last October since my previous 1998 Subaru made it to 240,000. So far I've taken it in for all new wiring and a tune up. And I was assured by the car salesman that the timing belt had been changed prior to my purchase. Anyway, since August I've had a rattly/whirring sound that I am experiencing over 15 mph. It seems to be coming from the back of my vehicle. It sounded like I had a hole in the muffler because it was reminiscent of when I lost my muffler on the highway with my 1998 subaru a few years ago, but this sound is definitely not as loud. The sound does increase in volume at high speeds on the highway but has so far not been as loud as my previous experience. (and the muffler is still there when i look under the car)
When I took my car in to get the oil changed a couple months ago, I asked the mechanic to check and see if he saw anything while under there. They told me it was my heat shield.
Recently the noise started being a little bit louder on the highway so I thought maybe it was my tires since they were very due to be replaced. I bought new tires within the last few weeks and there has been no change with the whirring sound on the highway. Yesterday, I noticed a light thunking sound that started happening between the speeds 10-40mph. It seems to be in the front of my car and occurring with the rotation of my wheels. There are no sounds when Idle.
This is a 2006 Honda Civic LX which it won’t turn over. Last night we replaced the battery because it was old, and that still did not fix the issue.
The lights, stereo, electronics, etc will turn on, but when you turn the key, it’s just a very sad sounding “whirrrr” and nothing. It sounds like the battery is dead, but it obviously isn't. There’s no clicking…it has a full tank of gas…the key is programmed fine and is not new…
Further details: yesterday we were able to turn the car on (though it was slow to start: we thought it was the battery…) and move it to the driveway one time. After that, even jumping it off doesn't work.
Previously for the last week or so I've been experiencing a slowness to the start (I would turn the key and it just took a little longer than it has before to finally turn on) and also my headlights & interior lights were flickering pretty severely during my night driving. We had someone at Advanced Auto check the battery and alternator with one of their gadgets, but the alternator checked out fine. The battery was old and showing that it didn't have much left, so that’s why we replaced it.
We checked a lot of the fuses and didn't find anything blown. The alternator belt looked good, we made sure all the battery connections were tight & secure… We are just so confused as to why it’s not working…!! I'm not sure if the intermittent lights flickering is related or unrelated. I am in a relatively warm place but it's not been all that hot lately... I've never had any other problems with the vehicle...
06' prius that I believe to be abnormal behavior. Just took the car on a 360 mile round trip. After about an hour of driving (Interstate 78mph) I happened to notice on the Energy screen that the car started to use the electric motor steadily for about 5 minutes of driving on flat terrain (Kansas). I watched as the SOC went from 5-6 bars down to 1-2 (purple). At which time the car started experiencing bouts of high rpm on level terrain/small hills. It stayed in this state for over 20 minutes or so of driving. It acted like it knew it needed to charge the hybrid battery, however the level never increased until such time as I exited the interstate and started braking. I am assuming that the HV battery should rarely discharge that much traveling at highway speeds on flat terrain.

View 4 RepliesI have a 2007 Hyundai Sonata 2.4l GLS. Staring to get an little noise from the engine about a few days ago. The noise what can only describe as a whirring sound and while in the cabin it sounds like it's coming from the right side and in the engine area, especially after a cold start and during acceleration. It is not very loud(have to turn stereo off to hear it and it only last for a couple of seconds as far as I know. My car now has about 240,000kms on it, and since the noise is coming from that area I am guessing it's a pulley of some sort. Serpentine belt was changed last year. What this noise is? I was thinking it might be the belt tensioner, probably should have changed it during my belt change.
View 1 RepliesRecently (5-6) months my Gen II has been making some weird sound when I turn it on before the ICE starts. Also when I turn it off after the ICE shuts down. I really don't know how to describe the sound so I took some clips of it. Sort of a high pitched grind maybe? Car has 45xxx, just had the Hybrid water pumped replaced.
