What is the procedure to check the codes when the check engine light illuminates. I am looking for the exact procedure. For example in my other cars, you connect the scanner to the OBD2 connector, then you turn the key to ON without starting the car.
View 1 RepliesComing home from spring break towing the TT, the Check Engine light illuminates. Seems to be sputtering at idle, but otherwise OK, so we continued home.
Scanner lists the P0171 and P0174 codes. Ok, where to begin? based on internet info, started by cleaning the MAF sensor and throttle body. When I pulled apart the intake, noticed that the grommet which feeds the MAF in the air intake had become separated letting air bypass the MAF. Hence the reason for the codes.
If you get these codes, check the grommet for the wires feeding the MAF in the air intake to make sure it hasn't become separated from the intake. No more codes.
My mothers 2004 Volvo S40 (original body style) has an illuminated check engine light. Dad took it to their local dealer. Unable to get a code from the cars computer and guessing the problem might be with the fuel filler cap seal, the dealer sold them a new fuel filler cap, offering them a refund on the cap should that solution not work. It did not.

View 16 RepliesA few days ago our 2010 with 87k became immobile with "Check Hybrid System" illuminated on dash. Dropped it off at the dealer who had it all day. Replaced the "transistor kit" part number 04899-47021 and blamed the failure on the recall. Recall was not completed. Wife felt a jolt while driving home but no warning lights illuminated. Next day she tried to start it and got that message.
Codes pulled were p3004 with info code 800 and p0ad.
I have a 2005 Prius with 131k miles. The check engine light came on. I had my mechanic check for codes, he had 3different scanners. There were no codes posted. Next day light went off. It has been off for a week. Now it has returned.

I haven't been able to find a full explanation of the codes online, so I need to know what they mean, how much it would cost to fix, and how urgent the repair is. I will be going on a 5 1/2 hour road trip next week, so I want to make sure I'm not going to break my car (or myself!) by doing so with the engine light on.
My check engine light comes on intermittently, fuel consumption normal. I have not had any noticeable performance issues. I took it to O'Rielly's for a scan but they could not establish a connection to get a readout. Is there a special scan tool needed? The on board Lan Monitor shows EMV codes below, are they meaningful in any way?

Just last week I bought a 2007 prius from a local dealership in Houston. The check engine light recently turned on and had it checked out by an auto parts store. The codes they read were the p1116 and p1121 (issues with the coolant valve). I know it would cost much to replace the valve, and I am not wanting to pay that much, especially since i just bought the car. I'd also be willing to fix it myself if i had some guide or step by step instructions...
View 3 RepliesMy 2005 Prius was working quite fine until few days ago when the dash lit up with ABS, Check Engine, red triangle, ((!)), and the red car symbol on MFD. Additionally, the hybrid battery fan now comes on once in a while. Mileage on car is 164K; changed the 12v and hybrid batteries at about 153K. Running it through codes scanners, the following codes were read off it:
* B1421 (Solar Circuit malfunction, passenger side. Also, AC malfunction [although on the car, the AC still seems to work fine])
* P3000 (Hybrid control fault, and cruise control error)
*C2318 (Low voltage error-power supply malfunction)
I have checked 12V status using the diagnostic mode this morning and found it to be 12.0V (although 2 days ago when I checked it was 11.8V.)
I have not used the car since as I wouldn't want it park up by the roadside. I'm scarred to think its the hybrid battery again... For now, the car still moves well. What should I check to confirm real cause(s) of all these?
This afternoon, after driving about 150 miles, I came home and shut off my 2001 Prius. It was sitting for about 20 minutes before I turned it back on to drive off. Almost immediately, the hybrid warning light came on on the MFD, the red exclamation mark light illuminated, as well as the check engine light, and the motor shut off. I popped the hood, and could hear a high pitched squeal coming from near the inverter. I called my dealer to ask the service department what I should do, and they just told me to bring it in and they will take a look at it. I live over an hour away, so I don't want to bring it there if I can avoid it. I then shut it off and let it sit for a few hours.
After reading about the possibility of the auxiliary battery being bad, I went and turned the Prius on, and then shut it off several times to reset the hybrid warning light (I had to do so in order to access the aux battery information through the MFD). It turned on without incident, and shut off fine, and after being reset the hybrid warning light shut off, as well as the red triangle light. Then, I went through the process of pulling up the battery voltage information through the MFD.
With the car off, and the lights and fans off, the battery voltage read about 10.0-10.5 V. With the lights and fan on, the voltage dropped to about 9.5 V. After getting those readings, I drove it down the road a little ways, just going about 20 mph. It seemed to work fine. The check engine light is still illuminated. With the motor running, the voltage reading was 13.2 V, and then when I got back from my test drive and shut it off, the voltage hovered at 10.6 V with the lights and fan on.
My prius has 172k miles on it, yesterday i got the dreaded red triangle and check engine light along with the temp indicator on the navi screen. I pulled over immediately. after sitting for a bit, the lights went away except for check engine. I checked the engine compartment and felt no real heat anywhere. Coolant reservoir was full i drove a few more miles as i was taking a customer to the airport (i work for uber) and they came on again.
After sitting for a few again they went away and i continued on to the airport. on the way back home, about 40 miles or so later, it happened again. again i sat for a few and it went away and i took it to the dealership in my town. they have always been really cool there (an anomaly i know) I never before used dealerships for anything before owning a prius) and he pulled the code for me and it showed POAOF failure to start. that had actually never happened, but was told that it doesn't necessarily mean the car wouldn't start, it can happen while running.
He cleared the code, as i had recently changed the 12v battery and after reading a bit here i know it can cause some weird stuff so i was hopeful that would do the trick. so today i went out and worked again. Drove probably around 50 miles or so and on the way home it happened again. Back to the dealership. This time they put the main tech on it and he also got the code P0121 indicating the throttle position sensor. He took apart the throttle body and tested it and said it was showing not enough ohms or something like that (I know jack all about electrical) and that the throttle body was bad and would need replacing, also saying there was oil in the intake and it would need to be cleaned.
Alright, so I was driving along and everything was fine, I had no error lights and the car was running perfectly. I accidentally went over a lip of this parking lot a little too fast and all of a sudden the check engine light came on!!! I took it to Jiffy Lube and the codes I got were : c1253, c1311, p0011, and p0012. Is my car safe to drive tomarrow? Are these super expensive to fix? Could they have been set off from the curb?

View 6 RepliesDriving home early from work today, moments after leaving the parking lot the VSC warning light illuminated. Followed by ABS and Power steering lights a few seconds later.
Car drove normally. Systems seemed healthy.
I quickly pulled over, took this picture, and then power cycled the car. The warning lights turned [off] and stayed off for remainder of drive home (~30 min).
I finally found the Prius I wanted. It's used. 2006. Gen II 220k miles. Bought at auction almost completely dead and no gas. After adding gas and driving so the main battery charges. It starts up great however the dash looks a little scary with nearly every warning light on.
View 19 RepliesI changed out the blower fan this morning as the a/c was weak and at times, the fan could not get going without manually spinning the blades to get it started. Easy project and now the fan has much more power. Decided to vacuum out the car after I was done which only took about 10 minutes. I know that I had disturbed the wiring under the front seats by brushing up against it with the vacuum tool while trying get under the seat. This is not the first time that this has happened... I checked all the connections. Should the 'problem' clear itself after 3 restarts? Car now has 244,882 mi.

Recently I decided to do an inverter recall and them some "necessary" maintenance (TB, transaxle fluid, etc). How I have an intermittent CEL, P1112 (Intake air temp sensor) coming on every other day. Before I thought Autozone had another DTC detected (1121 It had something to do with a coolant stacked too high?)

I have a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid with 95,000 miles. Today I drove to the top of Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park (this is at about 11,500 feet). At the top I was attempting to parallel park and the trouble began. I slowed and stopped the vehicle and shifted in to reverse. I put my foot on the accelerator to back up and the car started rolling forward. I looked at the gear indicator and the R was lit up but the D was also lit up and the Check Engine Light had illuminated and the car would not move at all. I shut off the vehicle and turned it back on and was able to shift in to Drive and drive away but the Check Engine Light was still on. No other problems with the driving, car sounds and feels the same. I drove off the mountain back in to the Denver area without any problems and was able to parallel park. Check Engine Light is still on - what might be going on. I do need an oil change shortly, but I don't know if that would cause these issues.
View 4 RepliesI own a 2000 Toyota Camry that was given to me by my father. The check engine light illuminated last year so I brought the car in to my mechanic. He said it was the o2 sensor and changed it. That lasted about a month , and the light went on again. This time it had to do with some valves that get stuck open (or closed) but also had to do with the amount of oxygen that goes into the carburetor . I asked my Dad if he had this problem, and he told me that the engine light was illuminated often, that he had brought the car in about 6 times, but nothing was found. Previously I owned a 1998 Camry, and had the same problem; the check engine light illuminates, the diagnosis is the oxygen sensor, that gets changed, the light goes on again, this valve thing gets changed but the light goes on again in a month. I can't get the car inspected with the engine light illuminated. The light always goes back on but nothing else is found wrong with the vehicle. I really know nothing about cars.
