2010, purchased new, 89k. Never a hint of a problem. Last few days, I've notice a low level humming sound at idle. Probably there at speed and swamped by road noise. No change in performance. Temps in the 85 t0 90 range, with AC always at Auto, and at 72.
View 8 RepliesThis system has a feature that is supposed to adjust the sound level to compensate for road noise etc. I had a Ford with this feature and you could adjust the sensitivity. It worked great; adjust the volume sitting still and the volume went up and down as you traveled.
In the 2010 Prius, I have enable the feature but I cannot figure out if the sensitivity can be adjusted and I do not hear that it is working. I set the volume and start driving and as the road noise increases the sound just gets drowned out. If you turn it up, when you slow or stop it just blasts loudly; no adjustments at all.
My Prius IV with about 10K miles started to emit a high-pitched electrical humming sound under the hood when it was in Ready mode. It did not have this sound before. I opened the hood and found the sound was coming from somewhere around/under the engine area. I want to know if this is normal on Gen 3 Prius? I have seen post on the same noise in Gen 2 Prius but the posts (thread) stopped without a resolution.
View 19 RepliesThis is my first all wheel drive car and same goes for having a car in which the battery is in the rear floor. My question is the following.. Whenever the car is on and radio off I hear a humming sound while at idle. At first I thought it was the SAT radio (while vol all the way down) but that was not it. Its coming from the rear right side and almost sounds like a fuel pump/something electrical. It kinda sounds like a transformer or something like that. Since the battery is in the back and there is a fuse relay box aprox. 3 inches from the spare tire, I wonder if all these electronics are making this noise? Or is my car coming to life?
View 11 RepliesFinally got the Tech to acknowledge the Humming/Groaning from the Engine as I sat behind the wheel at my 5000 mile service visit. His response was that the sound we were hearing ( at start-up) was "NORMAL"
The RX drives and sounds fine after that mileage, but many times my destination is less, and I feel like I am driving a reject.This has persisted since new, @ frigid and high temps; as we approach 7500 miles.
Engine sound varies in pitch when acceleration increases the RPM's ?
I've got a noise I'm trying to diagnose on our 2010 Cobalt. Thought I'd ask about it here before heading to a mechanic.
When I hit about 35 mph I start to hear a hum sound that we've never heard before (my wife says she can here it at slower speeds, but I can't). The sound gets higher in pitch as the car speed increases. The RPMs don't affect it (i.e. when the car shifts gears, no change in the sound).
If I shift into neutral and take my foot off the gas, the sound doesn't change (except dropping in pitch as I slow down).Seems to be tied entirely to the speed of the car, not related to RPMs, throttle, etc.
I noticed yesterday while driving the RX (not my daily driver) that when I turned on the A/C to bi-level (chest & feet) it only blew cold air at the chest level while at the feet level it was warm air. If I remember correctly from the past that the feet got cold too so I tried it with the vents only at the feet, still warm air. I even checked to make sure that I didn't have it on bi-level with defroster in use.

View 5 RepliesMy 2008 Prius had a front quarter panel replaced after my wife back in to a fire hydrant.The body work looks fine , no issue there, but now when the car is coasting with the gas engine off you can hear a humming sound that was not there before the repair.Also it does,nt seem to be recharging the hybrid battery at the same rate.My thought is maybe the body shop caused some damage to MG1 by spinning the front tires on a emision testing machine or rollers.Does special precautions would have to be used when testing wheel clearances after a quarter panel replacement on a hybrid? Would a body shop need to do this ?

I was wondering if there's an easy way to aim/level them without taking button bumper cover off? Only one needs to be adjusted the passenger side is slightly brighter and aimed higher than driver side when you view them from a distance.
Seen the battery charge level at 100%? The battery charge display seems to never go up to the top bar. I think I may have noticed it once, but I might have been dreaming that.
View 18 RepliesOn my 2007 Prius, when I depress the brake to power the car on, it makes a simple, almost welcoming humming/buzzing sound. However, if I do it again within a couple minutes (for example, if I turn the car on to pull up, turn it off, and turn it on again), the noise when I depress the brake is different. When I press it down, it will make no sound for about a second or two, then make a deep 'thud' sound.

It sounds similar (higher pitched, but not as loud) to the humming you hear when you turn the vehicle off.
I just brought my 2011 Prius to the dealership today after the check engine light came on. Last night, the car was intermittently revving at a high level, but otherwise the car as running fine. The service technician was saying it was the VSV valve that was intermittently sticking. I was told that there was a software update on this valve that might take care of the problem; I asked about the lifespan for the valve, but he had no information about that. I told him to just do the software update, but now I'm wondering if I should also replace the valve.

The battery level has been fluctuating when im driving. It would go up and down and not stay up while driving. Generally regenerates when i brake alot. I just got it serviced at toyota and they OK'd the battery condition.
Battery fluctuating during driving. Normal or not normal? am i just paranoid?
After an oil change at the dealership, I checked the oil level in my garage after the car was parked overnight. The level read way past the maximum fill line.

View 3 Replies16 K miles- the noise level when highway driving is beyond belief-- difficult to hear the radio and conversation is a strain. Tires are beginning to cup. Close a front door with a window open produces cheap noise, not a solid thump. Toyota agrees there is noise, but will do nothing about it. " that is the way they are".
View 2 RepliesI got prius i-tech Australia (should be IV or V in US). I just noticed this morning that my fuel economy is better when I got 6-7 bars on battery level, and worsen if i only got 2-4 bars. Is it just my imagination or any explanation for it?
