Prius (2010-12) :: Turning Headlights On / Off With Ignition
May 27, 2015
My 2011 Prius has delayed headlight turn off, which is nice once in a very great while. I have looked through the manuals but have not found any method to remove the delay so headlights just go on and off with ignition, like my 2006 used to do. There is nothing on the headlight/turn signal arm to adjust, so assume delay is "hard wired" into the Prius software. Of course I can turn headlight switch on off every time, but wondered if there is a delay kill.

My engine keeps knocking for a minute or so after I come to a stop and turn off ignition. Should I be concerned?

My sister recently bought a 2007 Prius Package 6 with HID's. Her headlights will turn on for about 2-3 minutes then one will go out and then both will go out. If you turn off the headlights and turn them back on then they will both turn on again but only for a few minutes. What this can be? I figured it's not the bulbs since once they go out, they shouldn't come back on but I could be wrong.

I've noticed that if I have the dimmer wheel dialed up to maximum brightness before the detente that puts the mfd back to regular daytime brightness (hope this makes sense), in about the next minute and a half after I turn the headlights on, the mfd dims to roughly half the original brightness.

I have a Toyota Tacoma 2006 which lacks all the gadgetry and techno-wizardry of the Prius C model three (which I just purchased). Yet the moment I lock the truck with the key fob, if the headlights were left on they turn off instantly, allowing me to walk away with peace of mind that I won't return to a drained battery. I love this feature on my Tacoma because I can leave my lights on pretty much all the time which allows me to pull out of the lighted parking garage in the evening without driving for multiple city blocks unaware that my lights are off.
My issue: I just bought the Prius C to work more efficiently consume gas during my 60 mile commute, and I'm surprised to discover that the headlights just remain on even when turning off the car and engaging the locks/alarm.
Someone told me that they supposedly go off after 20 minutes but I'm not comfortable walking away from the vehicle and trusting that this will happen.
Is there a way to ensure that the headlights go off when the car is powered off and the locks/security system is activated? If there's a "window" of time that it takes, can this be adjusted?
BTW, averaging over 50 MPG each way to work despite the "47 MPG HWY" EPA estimate...

My 2009 Prius headlights are turning off automatically while I'm driving. At first only one of them turned off, but sometimes both turn off.the fog lights remain on.when one goes off, its like it only goes half off. Then sometimes while the headlights are on and I used the right light the lights go completely dark. Why this might be happening?

Having some trouble turning on fog lights with main head lights at the same time. Is this possible and how do I do this.

Having issues with headlights burning out in their 2010 Prius??? I had my bulbs replaced at 49,000 miles and they burned out again before 55,000 miles. They both burned out within two/three days of each other. I took it into the dealership and they weren't useful at all....

We are newer to hybrids. We purchased a used 2012 prius approximately 1 year ago. Within the past year, we have replaced the headlights approximately 6 times. Last month we replaced both front lights and tonight, out of nowhere 3 lights burnt out (both headlights and 1 bright light). It was dark outside and we live in a rural area so we had to drive 90 miles with 1 bright and the 2 day time lamps.
We maybe have changed bulbs in other vehicles once every couple of years and this is a monthly thing with our Prius. They aren't cheap so it's frustrating. My husband has been changing the bulbs and he does not touch the glass.

I have a 2012 Prius and I like the DRL to stay on even when the Headlight are on or off. Currently if Headlights are turned on the DRL turns off and I would like the control to turn DRL on or off.

2 months ago while driving both headlights (low) went out. Had to drive with my high beams on to get back to the house. Next day they worked again. 2 days ago both low lights went out again. My son checked and the bulbs are fine, the fuses are fine but the voltage meter says very low voltage with high resistance. What does that mean? I know there was a class action suit for the same reason for up to the 2009 model.

I bought this car new in 2010 and it's a level IV not Four as it is a 2010. I am about to replace my headlights for the 5th time after only having had these for about 3-4 months. The dealership says that things happen but I've never owned a vehicle where the headlights are constantly going out. The first 3 times that the headlights went out, the dealership replaced them. I replaced them this last time .
I don't believe it's the headlights as much as I feel that it has something to do with the car. They went out last night as I got into the car at night and when I switched on the lights, they flashed and went out. The high beams still work but the lows do not.

I noticed tonight that my low beams are both out, and they were both working yesterday. Fuse #19, a 40A in a cluster of two 30A fuses appears fine when I look at it AND my horn and backup lights work just fine too. In the owner's manual it say that fuse position #19 controls the low beams and the horn (which is working) and the backup lights. SO, that says to me the fuse is ok because the other items are working.
FWIW, I can use the high beams, but recognize they're on a different fuse anyway. Also, I replaced BOTH headlamps with new Sylvania bulbs about 6 months ago when one of them went out. Could both low beam headlamps have burned out at the same time???? Is there some other fuse that controls them both other than the #19 fuse inside the engine compartment? Could this also be a problem in the control stalk switch on the steering console?

I have a 2011 Prius Three and one thing I have noticed is that the headlights don't last nearly as long as other vehicles I've owned. I drive 104 miles per day round trip, and I do leave my headlights on all the time but that has always been my driving habits. Thus far, I have been through 3 sets of headlamps, mostly low beam. Also low beam seems very weak, always better with the high beams on. Is it normal or might I have an electrical issue.

I have a 2012 Prius 4. All of a sudden, the head lights went very dim. We have replaced the bulbs and that did not work. I can only drive at night with brights on (not very popular). Any quick fixes, before i take it to the dealership?

Headlights on 2013 Prius too dim. Any good aftermarket headlight assembly for 2013 Prius with stronger bulbs. Have tried HID bulbs, not much improvement. Have seen this issue mentioned elsewhere.

just purchased 2013 Persona, where I could tap power for the DVD headrests that I plan to install, when shipment arrived. I thought about looking in the fuse box, but I am a vehicle newbie. I will be installing the headrests myself, but am clueless as to where to tap for power. I want the headrests to be powered only with the key in the ignition.

I had read that the auto leveling only works when you first turn on the lights. But, I have caught mine doing it in traffic. When I come to a stop behind a car, a second after the front end bounces back, I notice the beams dip down half of an inch, on the car in front of me. I have seen this a few times. Seems the auto level feature is always at work. Is this new for 2012?

I just got my 2010 prius with OEM fog lights. I was wondering if there's a mod that I can just turn on my fogs without having to also turn on the headlights.

I want to make a few changes to my Prius. I would like to change out the stock headlights for the OEM LED headlights and add the OEM foglights.
I have some part numbers for the foglights and would get them through the dealer. What about the LED headlights? Is there an improvement over the standard headlights? I have read about the "auto leveling" sensor that is mounted on the back bumper, is that something that can be done?
