I have had my Prius for a few weeks now and have noticed a very strong smell of petrol when I have the vents open to heat the car (without AC). It seems to only happen when the fan is on and vents open. What could cause this and should I be concerned?
View 19 RepliesOur 1994 Suburu Legacy runs on Petrol or LPG. For some unknown reason, there is a strong petrol smell in the car. When this happens, the car will eventually stop and the engine stops. There is power, but the engine will not start. Several minutes and many attempts later later, it starts. What may be happening?

I read before that the condensation hoses were sometimes installed incorrectly leading to run off inside the cabin. Can that be it?
For the last few months, I've had an annoying problem with my 2003 Liberty. If I'm driving the car with the blower on (i.e. when it's cold out), whenever I stop the car and am idling, I get a very strong exhaust smell coming in through the vents. If I turn the fan off, the smell goes away. At first I figured it was due to being behind other vehicles, but now I've noticed that it does it all the time, even when there's nobody else around.
I brought the jeep into a shop a couple of weeks ago to deal with a separate CEL issue (evap leak - fixed by replacing gas cap) and I asked the mechanic to look for an exhaust leak. He said he didn't see any readily apparent problems with the exhaust line.
I'd like to deal with this because it's not very pleasant to inhale exhaust fumes through the vents. I intend to take it back in - but is there anything I can tell him (i.e. like, a particular part of the exhaust system to inspect more carefully) that will solve the problem?
I have done some reading of past threads regarding both Gen 7 Camry with people having an issue with a strong smell coming from their vents after perhaps 1K miles or less on their vehicle. Looks like some people had it fixed (some fixing it by themselves) while others continued to experience the problem. Similar thread regarding Toyota Camry Hybrid but only brief thread. Then another thread regarding perhaps another smell like from plastics /battery (?) in Prius while I was on the Prius threads.
Has this problem been addressed/resolved either by Toyota or by owners who simply fixed it themselves? I also do not know if the Prius offensive odor (someone who was testing them noticed it while test driving) is a totally different thing (like I say someone said it was from plastics or battery itself, not sure.... )
These are things I never even thought of /considered when looking for a new vehicle, and never experienced in my older Camry.
I just had a blown motor swapped with a used engine with around 50,000 on it in my 2002 Toyota Camry LE 4 cyl.
After driving the car enough to warm up I turned the vent on and in comes a fairly strong exhaust type smell.
I have driven the car for a little over an hour since the motor swap.
The car is driving fine with plenty of power and no sputtering or rough idling.
I just called my mechanic and he seems to think it is due to the oil that is present on/around the motor/exhaust from the swap that is burning off.
Experience a strong smell when WOT? Seems like every time I put my foot down hard through a couple of gears it stinks for a few minutes. The car only has 28000km, fresh oil change and running great.
View 5 RepliesI noticed a few months ago I wasn't getting much heat from my 99 Passat. I had the cooling system flushed and checked. Still no heat even after having all this done. Not long afterwords I started noticing that sweet smell through the vents, but couldn't find any leaks. I checked the expansion tank and it seemed to be slightly low so I added some coolant just to top it off and there it was. Steam started rolling up from the drivers side where the coolant had dripped on the exhaust and that's when I found the leak. I took the screws out that hold the tank to the bracket and discovered the leak coming from a short tube that appears to connect to nothing leaking coolant. Now here's my question, is the tank suppose to have a hole in it ? I thought it was suppose to be pressurized. What I don't figure is why didn't the shop notice it when they were refilling the system.
View 9 RepliesI have a 2011 BMW 328i and I get this sort of burnt chemical smell through the vents when the heat is on. It doesn't happen until I have been driving for 10-15 minutes. After that you get the smell on some low level all the time, but it seems to be briefly exacerbated by making a hard turn (i.e. a U-turn). You get a stronger whiff coming out of the turn and then it returns to baseline. I also smell it stronger when setting off in low gear (1st or 2nd) like from a stop sign. It happens whether the car has the air re-circulation on or not. It has been in for service twice and they can't find the problem. The car is a RWD manual transmission and only has 20k miles on it. I checked the fluid levels and as far as I can tell they don't seem low. I looked in the service history and a coolant leak was fixed at one point, near the thermostat - yet the car still exhibits the smell. In addition to the smell, it kind of irritates the back of my throat after a while.

Today it was that cold..it started easily..but about 30 minutes into my drive to work..I realized it was a little smoky and exhaustish smelling in the car..once I realized it wasn't the car next to me..i realized if I turned off the heat..the smell went away..but at the stoplight..i could see smoke coming from under the hood..out the corner by the passenger/dashboard... Car has 80,000, recent oil change, what it is?
View 1 RepliesI have a sc430 and I had to change the Ecu, I've had it mapped so the keys all match and now it wants to start but it just doesn't seem to want to kick in , it turns over then just shuts down, there is a smell of petrol so I'm assuming its getting trough , I just wondered if there is any other reason for it not to start ...
View 13 RepliesAfter replacement of the transmission, there is a distinct smell of gas/petrol, on starting the car after it has sat overnight. Other work done at the same time was replacement of all coils and plugs and air filters.
The car has 69K miles and is a V8. The dealer has checked fuel lines etc and found nothing. The car is in excellent condition and had no issues before the transmission failed.
Today, when I returned to my parked car from grocery shopping, I noticed a strong interior electrical burning smell. Like wires burning or similar. When starting the car the yellow warning triangle came on and the hybrid warning message to pull over and park the car. What could cause this? Want to mentioned today was a very hot day 105. Up until today the car drove flawless.

View 8 RepliesI have a 2010 Prius and it has developed a very strong mold smell/odor. It is strongest when the car has been sitting with the windows up. I have tried many of the tips in the forum regarding not using the recirc mode. I've clean the car inside and out, mats, carpeting, every compartment.
I have talked to the dealer parts counter and replaced the cabin air filter with the carbon filter and used the 2 can treatment that Toyota sells (one in the a/c drain x2 and the other in the air intake.). No joy.
I took it to the service department they did the same thing - again, no joy.
They have asked me to bring it back for, and I quote, "exploratory surgery." I asked if this the covered under the Toyota Certified Warranty. He could not confirm that it would be covered.
Recently I noticed that I still have hot air coming through the vents with the climate control system completely off. I can tell that the fan is off because it's not blowing through the vents but the vents are very hot.
View 13 Repliestried to set temp at 22c to 24c, outside temp was 18c, but no heat, nor warm air came out from the vent. cold air all the way (at least 30 minutes drive).
set it to 30c and higher, then I can feel the hot air.
i just found out from here the prius's heater performance is not good. but that bad?
is it normal or should i bring it back to toyota to look at it?
I recently picked up a 2005 Prius with 129k miles that seems to be in gFor any codes.
With most cars this would usually point to a faulty thermostat but I'm not sure on a Prius. I checked the coolant level and it's fine. I don't hear any gurgling in the dash so I'm guessing there's no air in the system.
The vents in my 2002 Prius are starting to become problematic. When I turn on the heat, the air is not coming out. When I hit the glove compartment, the air starts to come out, but it is very low and stops after a minute or two. I just want to know if the blower motor is dying, and how to replace it, if it is really the blower.

And this is Winter!! I was driving for about 20 mins and still...No Hot air...vents are blowing cold (cool) air.
I recently changed my condenser/radiator but I did NOT fill my condensor with the A/C gas yet. (could that be the problem?) But isn't the gas inside condenser is for A/C and not for the Hot air??
Any other stuff that I need to check to solve this problem?? (harness, fuse etc.?) It's cold outside and my car has NO HEAT!
