I have never had a car with automatic transmission that did not also have low gear or others besides overdrive. We are going to the Rockies and I would like to know how to get my car to use lower gears for accent and decent without over revving or constant gear shifts that I expect with the normal drive gear.

View 7 RepliesI have a 2002 Subaru Outback that has started overheating only when I try to go up into the mountains. It starts within a few miles of starting up a steep grade and cools down the instant you start down the mountain. I have had no problems with regular driving conditions. The only pertinent info might be that it did have a coolant leak last summer and overheated then.
View 8 Replies99 F-150 V8 - During mountain driving after a long downhill I get a cloud of smoke when I get back on the gas. Appears to be darker smoke not oil like blue smoke. Only other issue I have with the truck is an occasional cloud of blue smoke when I start it which I believe is just aging valve seals. What is causing the cloud of smoke after a downhill?
View 9 RepliesWhile driving a mountain road (hwy 17) going downhill this morning I lost power braking and power steering and a got the following error message on the display
TRANSMISSION P LOCK MECHANISM
PARK CAR ON FLAT SURFACE AND APPLY BRAKES
I was able to stop the car on a flat area. I turned the ignition off and then restarted the car and the power steering and brakes came back, but the red triangle remained. I drove to the Toyota dealership and left the car for service.
I have the same problem noted on last weekend's show with another Subaru owner. My car has a burning type smell (burning rubber or burning oil) only when driving uphill on a mountain road. I'm not sure the answer given on the show is correct about the rubber under the carpet smelling because of the catalytic converter. The smell comes through the venting system.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2006 Hyundia Sonata. I idles really bad like you pulled 5 of the six plug wires off when you put it in gear. Once you start moving a couple miles an hour it is fine. It is also perfect in park or neutral, not a hint of a problem. Put it in drive or reverse and it almost stalls.
View 13 RepliesJust got my 06 3.3 GLS. Sometimes it seems to hang in between 1st and 2nd gear. No amount of throttle will make the car go or rev up until you let off and it changes gear. Then its fine. 79k miles, no cel. When i say it wont rev it will be at full throttle and engine and vehicle speed doesn't change. I just had the heater core replaced but not sure how this would relate to that issue? Someone said he thought maybe the trans needs to relearn its shift points after having the battery disconnected but not sure I buy that.
View 1 RepliesWhen the vehicle is started and shifted to drive or reverse, the RPM increases and you have to hold the brake so it won't take off. The idle speed is normal in neutral or park. No codes. The Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor voltages are normal with the pedal released. the TPS voltage incress one volt when put in to drive or revers. Have checked the ECM grounds they are ok. .....
2006 sonata LX 3.3L 174,000 miles
I was measured 0-60 time and the best result with GPS was 11.4, and that is pretty disappointing. Also noticed that after changing from second to third gear while pushing to the read line on full throttle it have about 1 second delay without power, then starts to pull again!? Is this normal?
It is '2006 sonata with 2.4 160hp, everything with car is ok but from the first time I bought it (8 months ago) it just feels sluggish.
I found on carfolio that 0-60 time for that car is 8.8 seconds, and mine is 30% slower... that is too much! Also from the first time have problem with starting in 1st gear, it is almost unusable because it is syper sensitive on foot, is this normal?
I have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata that is making a loud clunking noise when I first put the car in gear. I start the car, put my foot on the brake, put the car in R and I hear a creeeeaakkk, clunk! noise coming from the front, passenger side of the car. I back up out of the driveway/parking spot, put the car in D and get a slight clunk! noise out of the same area again.
At first, I thought this was maybe a ball joint or a tie rod failure, but a friend of mine and I took the front wheels off of the car this past weekend and I gotta say, everything was found to be in solid shape. Nothing loose, bushings are in good shape, boots are in fantastic shape, no loose wheels that can be moved in ways they shouldn't move. After getting the noises and clunks to happen again, my buddy's opinion is that it's my transmission having a tough go of it and that I should take it to a transmission shop. Is it a transmission thing?
2006 Sonata, 6 Cylinders, 141,000 miles (227,000 km)
Never did anything with the transmission fluid since I've owned the car. I bought it in 2010 when it had 80,000 miles (129,000 km) on it.
I have a 2010 Sonata 2.4 with 63k miles and auto trans. Just recently I have noticed a single soft click when braking, just before the car comes to a dead stop. I can hear the click and also feel it in the gearshift.

The car has developed a rough idle while in gear (i.e. when stopped at a stop light) and park (i.e. after I start the car).
It's starting to get a little annoying since I'm used to a very smooth idle.
I think this issue started within the last 2-3k miles.
Plugs were allegedly changed at 30k. A full tuneup was done at that time.
Wires are still original.
I have a 2006 Sonata LX with 91,000 ,miles and today it starting making a clunk sound when I would accelerate normally as it was going from 2nd to 3rd gear. My question is this: I have 91,000 miles on it and have owned since new in 2005 (8 years). Does it sound like a transmission problem and would a transmission problem be covered under the 10 year, 100,000 miles warranty?

View 6 RepliesI bought my sonata with about 48,XXX miles about 2 months ago, and now it has 52,500 (im a student - dont drive much). Anyways, whenever i start my car up and drive down the road, when the car shifts in to third, i hear a slight knock. almost like a little gong - metal on metal.
Once it does it the first time, it doesnt do it anymore. Im guessing temperature could have a factor?
My 09 Sonata GLS has 50k miles on it. I bought it as a demo model with 9k on it (regret that) as new ... who knows how it was treated.
at 40k miles I noticed that in the morning when I was braking the car would feel like it was slipping out of gear momentarily and it was pretty rough. After a few minutes it would stop and I could continue on my way. The car is an automatic. I noticed it if I let the car decelerate enough that it dropped into first on its own, or if I used the brakes. I figured it must be due to the cold weather or something and was hoping it would clear up. This was only happening after 8 hours of non-use, overnight in the cold.
I just bought 07 Sonata CRDI tiptronic and it turns out it has problem when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear: rpms jump up and i feel the kick.
It is not that noticeable when shifting at 50kmph, but worse when shifting at 60k kmph.
Same on Drive or when shifting manually. What the problem could be?
I noticed that recently my 2007 Sonata (108k Miles) is making a knocking sound when it shifts into second gear. It happens only when I back out of my garage and drive down the street and the car is cold. After that there is no more noise, and the transmission is shifting through the gears smoothly.
I recently replaced the transmission fluid, about 5k miles ago and I used the recommended type.
I read other postings with people having the same problem, and in those cases they pointed to the ABS self-check which occurs when you first start out. But this is definitely not my case as the noise is coincidental with shifting into 2nd gear and it only does it when the transmission is cold.
Could this be caused by the fluid temperature or maybe because the fluid has not had a chance to circulate through the transmission and fill all the cavities? Its rather strange thought that I just noticed it in the last month or so, if that were the case I should have had this problem before.
I have a 2006 hyundai sonata, which has possibly the worst designed cup holder of all time. Because of this awful design flaw, I stopped my car at a light yesterday and some of my coffee spilled into the gear shift box. Now when I am in regular D, it appears the car stays in 1st gear. This sonata also has the option of pushing the stick to the right so you can manually shift gears.. I think it's called sports mode or something. When I try that, I can shift it up to 2nd, but I drops right back down to 1. I left it overnight, hoping it was just some wet electronics and would dry, but this morning the problem persists. Not sure if there's a fix for this, if I should take it to a transmission place, or just my regular mechanic. Someone suggested contact cleaner, which I might have I just have to look.
View 10 Replies2006 Sonata V6 with 98K miles. The car has developed a rough idle, sputter/lurch while in gear, but not park or neutral. No CEL/codes. Have already replaced the spark plugs (OE), throttle body/FI cleaned, MAF cleaned, new air filter, coil packs OK... Mechanic said no vac leaks, FI spray pattern good, good fuel pressure, etc. Vibration dampener looks ok, no separation or wobble. Another post mentioned a power steering pressure sensor, which I will have checked, but the mechanic is at a loss.
