I have a 2011CRV 2 wheel drive that is making a clunking noise in the front brakes every time I take my foot off of the pedal. I took it to the dealer twice and both times they told me that there is nothing they can do about it. They said it has to do with the way the pads wear but said that even when I change them the clunk probably won't go away. I have never heard a car do this.
View 4 RepliesI have been frustrated with my Elantra's handling from the time I purchased. I feel that the car is setup poorly and has design/OEM part issues.
I have improved the rear-end "hop" issue by replacing the OEM rear shocks with the KYB Gas-A-Just's -- a big improvement in handling the bumps. But the rear-end solid axle on such a light car is just crap...
I have developed quite a bit of 'clunking' noise in the front suspension.
I am considering replacing the front-end shock-strut assemblies with KYBs -- I'd love to hear if it made a big difference. Also wondering if I should change-out the 'sway bar link' while replacing the shock/struts.
I'm just so frustrated with the way this car handles (I've driven Subaru's, Honda's, and VW's) compared to other cars. I feel it's a combination of low-quality OEM suspension parts, rear solid axle, light weight, crappy electric steering settings, and tires that are too wide and too low-profile for such a light car. (I have the limited with 17 wheels).
So about a month ago my 2013 Sonata GLS started to make some clunking noise going over the littlest bumps over the road from the front end on both right and left side.
I brought it to one mechanic and they said the rack and pinion needs replacing which is an expensive fix. I couldn't believe that was the problem as I had no leaks and it was on their solid. I ended up taking it to my uncles mechanic and he stated its the stabilizer links on the front right and front left wheels. My way to work has a lot of bad pot holes... so I'm hoping that the stabilizers are actually the problem.
Anyways, tomorrow I will be bringing it to the mechanic to have them both changed. I know a lot have been complaining about this issue and instead of replacing the rack and pinion, I thought I'd try and see if it actually is the stabilizer links and provide a fix for some of the sonata owners on here.
After car has sat for an hour or more. The car will make a clunking sound, front end, when it reaches 10 mph...but will only do this when first start driving. Doesn't make clunk after it's moving. BUT, if it sits for an hour or more later, it'll make the same clunking sound when starting out. Not related to turning steering wheel or braking.year -2011 with 20,000miles
View 14 RepliesI've got a 2000 Accord. I recently started hearing and feeling a hard knocking/clunking noise at the front-center of the car during the correct after a left turn. My trustworthy mechanic told me the subframe is rusted out on the right side and that it isn't safe to drive until the subframe is replaced (he also said he's seen several of these this last year). He suggested that the cause is that the hose leading away or down from the air conditioner is too short, and leaks directly onto the subframe. There is no recall on this problem currently. I've done some Internet research and there is some buzz about this, but not as much as I was hoping for.
View 17 RepliesI took my car to a nearby repair shop. They replaced the rear brake pads and resurfaced the rear rotors. When I left, I felt and heard clunking while driving. Initially I thought it was just stuff rolling around in the trunk. As I drove on, I realized it must be something the shop did. It sounded like metal scraping metal every time the tire rotated and started making terrible sounds when I hit the brakes. I stopped to take a look. It looked like the rotor or something behind it had ripped. What happened here? It's a 2006 Honda Civic EX. Picture hopefully attached.
View 9 RepliesI have had a clunk in the front end that started out as a light clunk that was sometimes noticeable. It has now turned into a clunk that can be heard very often. It sounds like a hollow clunk. I'll try to explain it so it makes sense...If I'm going over a bump or speed bump or something like that it doesn't really do it noticeably. If I'm driving a get to a place where the road is uneven or there is a hole or pothole and the front end seems to "fall into the hole", then the sound is very audible, and I can feel it slightly in the steering wheel and under my feet in the drivers floorboard. So, I've had the front end checked out 4 times and between what they said to do and what I've read on here...here is what I've done so far......
Changed end links with moog end links
Changed sway bar bushings with moog bushings
Undid the bushing mounts from the front frame and wired the sway bar up to keep from flopping around. No change in sounds
Didn't get rid of the clunk....
Had front end shop check out truck... They said ball joints were ok, no play in them. They did say that they could feel some "clicking in the pitman arm pivot" when turning the wheel. Like something was loose in box.
I've changed shocks and bearings.
I can grab a hold of the passenger outer tie rod at the adjustment sleeve and rotate the tir rod and it will rotate around in the socket and hitting on the insertion point and make a metal thud sound.
Again, took into shop and they said that would be normal b/c the tie rods have to have that to keep from binding up in front end.
My thinking is that if the tie rod rotates that much, then it is rotating the drag link which in turn puts stress on the pitman arm which in turn has either broken or sheared the pinion shaft inside the box and then when I go over a hole, it moves and all of the above is put into motion.
Shop (Ford) basically called me an idiot and that wouldn't be the cause.
So, now onto my thoughts and questions....

Axle bushings (????? how many and where are they all located)
tie rods and drag links..
I changed the front brake rotors & pads on my wife's 2009 Toyota Camry & everything seems fine except when doing sudden or slightly hard stops it seems to do a clunk/knock type sound from the front brakes. It also only does it sometimes not every hard/sudden stop.
One thing that comes to mind is that when I went to tighten one of the guide pin bolts it was a real pain, the big bolt that the screw threads into kept spinning making it hard to tighten the bolt into & none of the others did this. I thought I tightened it down but possibly not?
I have a 2002 accord 4-cyl with a 5-speed with 89,xxx miles. Just a few months ago, I noticed a clunking sound coming from the front suspension when I go over certain bumps. "Certain" bumps are usually wavy pavement or dips (not wide dips, but short/concise ones), and sometimes certain speed bumps. Sometimes the sound happens regardless of the types of bumps though, but the aforementioned ones usually bring the noise quite consistently. The sound hasn't really gotten worse, but it hasn't been getting better either.
A while back when I had my timing belt done, the mechanic stated that one (or more) of my engine mounts were worn. Is it possible one or more of my engine mounts is the source of this issue (from the engine "rattling" around in the compartment. I'm not sure if that's even possible, just a hypothesis) or is it purely suspension. PS. The sound isn't quite a sharp metal on metal sound. Its more of a "thump" or "clunk" coming from the front end (left or right) as if its bottoming out or a bushing or spacer has worn off. Its just loud enough to drive me crazy, and sometimes I can feel it through the floor.
Ok so we just replaced our front and rear brake pads and had the rotors turned. Our rear brakes are fine but both our front brakes now make a clunking/popping noise when we brake.

Whenever she and I make a turn in it, a clunking sound is heard and felt on the front passenger side in the area of the floorboard, and it seems to come from an area between the seat and the wheel well and seems to be getting slowly but surely/progressively worse/more noticeable as time passes. I checked underneath the car earlier today, and there aren't any observable leaks to report anywhere.
View 4 RepliesSo I just bottomed out really hard and I pulled over to a gas station to check out my car to see if I busted anything. I noticed on the way to the gas station that for the first two times I hit the brakes hard there was a clunking noise but now it went away. Onto the leaking part though, there are two hoses that run just along the inside of the frame on the passenger side just behind the wheel and one of the lines is leaking a lot of water. What these lines run to/from? I'm going to get the car on the lift tomorrow.

Lately when the engine is cold I will get to the end of the street and when I apply the brakes the car will make a clunking noise and a couple of times it has actually died and I have to restart the car. I only experience this the first thing in the morning, after that the car seems fine. I cannot tell if it is the brakes causing the problem or the transmission.
View 5 RepliesAt 55k, 72k, 76K and 91k the rear brakes have hung up, become very hot and smoked badly. Dealer service claims it comes from rust binding the calipers because we live in the Northeast. I've been driving for 35 years and never had an issue with any other vehicle. They cleaned the calipers and sent me on my way. I think there is an underlying issue. There is no way I should have this issue every 20,000 miles ( or less ). What else could cause this? Brake Lines? Master Cyl? Honda service want nothing to do with it. At very least I asked them to replace the calipers which they did not agree to do.
View 11 RepliesMy 1997 Honda, with 200,000 miles was making a clunking noise when I turned right. The mechanic replaced the rack & pinion, which stopped the clunking. However, it still makes a rhythmical softer clunking or clicking sound on right turns. It takes a while on the road for this to start, but once it starts, it happens on every single right turn. The mechanic said there is nothing wrong with the axle or the struts or anything whatsoever and it is probably just the flap hitting the fender, or something like that bec the car is so old. However, the noise is too rhythmical, too consistent for me to be confident that it is just pieces of rubber or metal randomly brushing together.
View 19 RepliesI just had my front brake pads replaced by a local shop. I am now hearing a clunking noise every time I step on the brakes. I got the brake pads from the local Lexus Dealership but had them installed by a local shop. Is it normal to have this clunking for the first couple hundred miles until the brakes "wear" in or do I need to have someone else look at the brakes?

(automatic transmission) i was at a stop sign in the rain and accelerated only to hear a clunking noise and it sounds like its spinning around and clunking and it hits something on its way around every time. clunk clunk clunk clunk. when i put it back in park i can feel what ever is spinning stop in the gear shift stick.

Problem #1: When ever I go over bumps, go down my drive way, I hear this rather loud noise coming from either the roof or right rear. It sounds like someone is hitting metal with a hammer.
It happens when I'm turning the wheel or just driving straight.
Problem #2: Also when I am going over a speed bump, when the rear of the car goes over it, the suspension gets squeaky. Speeds are about 2-3 mph~
Unfortunately, it is no longer under factory warranty so taking it to the dealer is my last option.
My wife and I have noticed a very light clunking noise coming from the car since we have owned it. The only time we hear it is after the car has been parked a while, like overnight for example, and we get in it and start off down the highway. Seems like we hear it within a quarter mile as we are accelerating up to highway speed.
The noise sounds like we ran over a tiny tree branch and it flipped up and hit the bottom of the car. Most of the time it sounds like it's coming from towards the rear of the car, but tonight it sounded as if it were up near the front window post on the passenger side.
I have to wonder if it has anything to do with perhaps the seat belts or airbags engaging or locking into position or something of that nature. 2014 Sonata? Does something "lock in" at a certain speed when starting off?
My 11 cc lb 4x4 6.2 has a clunking/loose sound coming from the front end. It is prominent when going over small/medium bumps but not so much large bumps. I have had my local dealer and a couple local shops look at it and they all say everything checks out. It definitely seems like something is loose in the front suspension. I just put new Gabriel max control shocks on all four corners. I have no play in wheel bearings or ball joints. Tie rod ends also look fine.
View 12 RepliesMy outback has 57k miles on it and already needs the front struts and rack replaced (diagnosed today at the Subaru dealership). The car has been making a whining noise in the engine and has been clunking when making turns for the past week. I have also noticed it hasn't been taking bumps as smoothly. They told me that both ends of the rack are leaking and both front struts are leaking. My husband did admit to hitting the curb on the driver side front tire pretty hard while making a u-turn about a month ago, but all other driving is pretty standard. Yes, we drive on dirt roads in the mountains a few times a year for hiking, but don't drive in a manner that I consider wrong. Did the u-turn incident cause this? (hard to believe that would affect both sides of the rack and struts).
