Jeep - Grandcherokee :: Start And Run Fine But Nothing On Dashboard Would Work

Mar 12, 2012

I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has about 165K miles on it. I bought it used in 2004 and a week later, I started experiencing the following problems:

Originally, the Jeep would start and would run fine but nothing on the dashboard would work - gauges, mileage, lights, nothing. AC and power winds also wouldn't work. After several days, everything would start working fine again. This occurred three or four times during the winter. I got it checked out and the shop said that the body control module was shorting out, and that when it was wet was when it was having problems.

In 2005, the Jeep started having an issue with not starting. It would crank but not turn over. I discovered that if I disconnected the battery for a minute and then reconnected it, the Jeep would start up just fine. I've been doing this ever since.

I had the BCM replaced in 2006 and I didn't have any problems with the Jeep starting or with the gauges for about 9 months. Then everything started happening again. Now I have to disconnect the battery about once a month to get the Jeep to start.

I figure there must be something else other than just the BCM being bad since this is the second BCM I've been through. I think there must be something else causing the BCM to go bad, but I don't know what.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: 1996 - While Driving It Will Die And Start Again Over And Over

I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee and am having a problem my mechanic can't figure out. Sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesn't, heat or time of day has no influence. It even dies while I am driving. While driving it will die and start again over and over. Sometimes it runs fine with no problems. Have had this problem for 1 1/2 years now. Have relpaced rotor, dist cap, pick up coil, tune up, computer sensor, fuel filter. So far nothing has worked.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: 2008 Won't Start / All Lights Come On?

I have a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 68,000 miles. For the last 3 days it won't start. When I turn the key all the lights, gauges and air will come on. When I go to start it, all I get is click, click, click, click. When I connect jumper cables it starts right up. I had the battery, alternator and starter checked and they are all working good.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: One Click Noise When Key Turned But No Start

I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo V6. I am ready to sell it but I have a problem and the problem only happens when I'm driving it. Every once in awhile..about 7 times a week, when I turn the key it will make a one click noise but not start. It then starts after the 2nd or 3rd try. I have now taken my Jeep to 3 car repair shops. It has never happened with any of them. They have checked the usual suspects: battery, alternator, and starter (I even had a new starter installed just in case) and everything checks out. My latest car repair guy has had it for 3 days and it starts every time. The last time I brought it home 10 minutes after I had cut my car off and got back in to go somewhere, it did it again. There is no consistency when this happens whatsoever.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: 1995 - White Smoke On Start

We have a beloved 1995 Jeep Gr Cherokee 4L that was our first new car! We have babied it for many years. It now has 173k on it. We took to local Jeep dealer to get all RECALL items taken care of and to have it checked out completely. It was pinging on acceleration and hvac wasn't working. They kept it 5 months and finished all recall stuff and replaced the ENGINE TEMP SENSOR. They also recommended a new trans and a new AC. Since my niece wants it; and she loves it like we do; we took it to an honest transmission shop.

They said trans was fine just needed oil pan gasket, rear main seal and an elec engine diag because trans and engine were not speaking to each other. Now our JEEP is home; sits in driveway all week. When we start the car on Saturday we still have WHITE SMOKE then after driving awhile it goes away. Does not leak oil; does not need coolant; has NEVER over heated. Engine sounds great and it runs great. Had it tested for head gasket a couple of years ago and they said pressure was fine. We have never had to put coolant in it. The dealer and other Mechanics said nothing.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: Won't Start On First Several Tries In Mild To Cold Weather Only

I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo that won't quite start as the temp outside begins to drop into the 70's. It started doing this last winter and is happening again this fall. It sounds like it wants to start but just doesn't get that final ummmmph to start. After several tries and several minutes it will start but how annoying is that! Again this doesn't happen in warm weather only mild and colder. What is the cause of this problem and what to do about it?

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: 2005 - Hesitating To Start And Jerking While Driving

My 05 Cherokee has begun to jerk while driving. It's only just a jerk or two and then it smoothes out and drives fine. It only happens while driving never from a stop.It is also hesitating a little while starting. It always starts but I have never had this problem before. Not sure if the two issues are related or not but thought I would mention it.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: 2003 - Have To Disconnect Then Reconnect Battery To Start

I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee and randomly it decides not to start unless I disconnect then reconnect the battery. At first when I try to start it every accessory will be off but the A/C recirculation light is on for some reason. When I turn the key all the gauges move sporadically but the engine will not turn over at all, which you can see in the attached video. I disconnect and reconnect the battery and everything works perfectly fine. The only other issue has been that sometimes when I unlock the car (I no longer have keyless entry) the alarm will go off until I start the engine. I have not had both problems at the same time.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: 1996 Will Turn Over But Not Start / Gauges Are Dead

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 152k miles on it. Recently replaced battery. All of sudden yesterday, engine will turn over and try to run but sputters out and dies after about 30 seconds. Cannot maintain idle on it, and none of the gauges rise when you turn on the ignition, so that you cannot see the RPMs and the gas gauge reads empty even though I filled it up two days ago. Tried to start it today and saw the same problem but with no sputtering, engine dies within seconds now.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: Rumbling Noise From Back End When Start To Accelerate

I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I absolutely love, but lately a I've been noticing a problem with it gradually getting worse. When I am on my way to work in the morning, and I get on the on ramp to the highway, as I start to accelerate the back end of the car starts to make a rumbling noise. When I look at my gauges the rpm's are going up and down kind of like it doesn't want to shift. The only other time I notice this is when I try to climb a hill on the road or highway. There is no check engine light on. I have had this problem for quite sometime, but just recently noticed it because it has gotten worse. My husband has had a few mechanics drive it, and has asked a few others about it. They either don't know or have a very wide range of things it could be. My friend I work with had a Pontiac Grand Prix. She said that her catalitic converter plugged up and caused her transmission to go out.

Cherokee :: 97 Jeep Running Fine Then Out Now Won't Start

I currently have a 1997 jeep grand cherokee that I seems to die on me. I will charge the battery to 100 percent and its actually a good battery. The vehicle will run fine and then out of nowhere it wont start. I throw the battery jump box on it and it starts. I was thinking that something has been obviously drawing power from the battery. What it could be?

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: 2004 - Making Click / Tick Noise From Right Side Of Engine At Start Up

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 4.7 L. Clock from right side of engine immediately after starting engine. Seems to be in rhythm with engine and increases in frequency as I rev. Gradually subsides over first 5 minutes and not audible after that. Recent small leak of transmission fluid, but I'm thinking that has nothing to do with this.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: Loss Of Oil Pressure

I have a problem with my jeep grand Cherokee Laredo 5.2v8 losing oil pressure when the engine reaches normal operating temperature. the jeep sat for 2 years but we got it to run. when normal engine temperature occurs, the engine drops oil pressure and stalls. I have changed fuel pump,oil pump and oil pan gasket. also ran a cleaner through the engine. it doesn't matter if its winter or summer. the only way I can keep it running is to keep my foot on the gas pedal. if I don't do this the jeep stalls. a mechanic said it was the bearings. I don't believe this because there is no knocking noise when the engine is running. it has 103663 miles on it. it has just city and highway miles on it. never has been off road.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: Hesitates When Going From First To Second Gear

My wife says our 2002 Grand Jeep Cherokee very rarely hesitates as it moves from first to second gear (once every week at most). I've never felt the problem, but she says its happens when from a dead stop into 2nd gear. And she said there are no other times when the vehicle hesitates (fine in every other gear). No other weird noises and the power seems fine. Its an automatic transmission and I've had the fluid and filter changed recently. What it is? Transmission? It is due for some new spark plugs... any chance it could be that?

It runs well, engine has no ticking (unless its low on oil, then I add a quart), pressure is fine. Just no way to check the oil !The tube is still attached from looking at the outside.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: Shuts Off In Hot Weather

Last summer my wife's 2000 Grand Jeep Cherokee began shutting down while driving (electric stays on) on early hot days after about 40min of driving; even when the AC is off. About 10min later we can restart as before (before that it won't even crank). Over the winter the problem went away but returned again this spring/summer with the hotter weather (>80C). Its not the no battery or alternator and no one can seem to figure out the problem.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: 1998 V8 5.2L Started Overheating

I have a 95' Grand Cherokee, V8 5.2L. Recently, it started overheating and was diagnosed as a head gasket issue at a shop. I ended up replacing the head gasket, thermostat, and water pump. (The radiator, top radiator hose, and radiator cap were replaced within the last year as well.) Despite the repairs, the coolant in the reservoir does not move. The Jeep overheats and there is a squealing noise coming from what may be the water pump. There is also a slight leakage of coolant near the water pump bypass hose, but does not seem to be coming from the hose itself. What else am I missing?
