My wife and I recently purchased a 2013 Jetta and have noticed some abnormal lag when accelerating. It's an automatic transmission and the gear shifts aren't as smooth as they should be. I have read that it is possibly related to the drive by wire system and may just be an inherent result of that system.

View 10 RepliesI have an automatic 2003 Volkswagen Jetta GLS with 138,000 miles on it. I bought her four years ago with 91,000 miles. Right after I got her, I noticed that she'll jump a little when when she's cold (i.e. ease on the gas for the first few miles until she drives more smoothly). Looking around the web, this seems to be fairly common and most forums say that it shouldn't be a cause for any alarm.
More recently though, she's started to lag when I accelerate right around the RPMs where she should be shifting. For example, increase to about 3000 RPM, then it feels like a second of free fall, then she'll catch up and be just fine.
I took her into a shop to get it looked at about 3 weeks ago - initial thought had been maybe an issue with the transmission fluid (did a flush back in 2014 / 110k miles). The mechanic refused to do the flush until I had the catalytic converter and downstream O2 sensor replaced. The previous owner had installed a modification to the sensor and the wires had got too close to the converter and melted.
We noticed the check engine light about a year ago and had it looked at, but the mechanic then said it wasn't a huge issue and was really only going to affect our gas mileage so we held off. Since this mechanic was fairly certain that this was causing our issue, we went ahead and had the repairs made. No luck. Haven't had a chance to take her back to the shop, but I figured I'd ask to see if we were at least on the right track.
Second issue. My wife and I share this car, and her commute is significantly further than mine. She says that four times over the past two months the car has shut itself off when it comes to a stop. Not a common occurrence given the amount of driving we do, but enough to be concerning.
I've had regular oil changes and kept up with the routine maintenance over the past four years (new spark plugs, air filters, etc.). Just got a fuel system flush with the catalytic converter repair three weeks ago. Haven't changed the battery since I bought her, but every time we get the oil changed they check it and say it's good.
I have a 2001 jetta 5 speed. While driving yesterday, I had trouble shifting into second gear. When I took the car out of second, I would hear a slight popping sound. Shifting into the other gears was fine.
View 2 RepliesI made a horrible decision after my Ranger got totaled and bought a 94 Jetta... When I first got it, the car had trouble starting in the rain but eventually she would fire up. If I drove it immediately away after finally starting, it would jerk really bad when I gave it gas while shifting, until 4th gear. Once she ran for a bit it would smooth out. Nowadays if it rains the car won't start at all, just keeps turning over and I have to wait for a nice dry sunny day then it starts right up.
My mechanic worked on it recently and replaced a sensor in the distributor and the crank shaft sensor, because they showed up on the diagnostic as bad. Once his work was complete, he said he sprayed the engine with water and it started. So that was a week ago and it's raining and it won't start, the engine just turns over so it's not a starter issue. The car only has 143,000 but I am gonna get rid of it this fall but I just wanna know what this wet weather problem is.
Recently, a problem has developed with shifting gears in my 1984 Mercedes 300D. The shift feels too smooth as I move the gear shift knob from Park to Neutral and back. It doesn't catch when in Park. The car will still roll when in Park and the engine will not turn over. If I move the gear shift knob from Park to Neutral and back a few times and push the car a little, the engine will eventually turn over and crank. Sometimes it cranks in Park and sometimes in Neutral. Can you tell me what's causing this?

The problem: Very hard to get a smooth shift from gear to gear. Trust me, I know how to drive, but I can always feel the car shifting into a different gear if you know what I'm saying. On my friend's bone stock Jetta, I just let the clutch out without gas in between shifts and you don't feel a thing.
On my car, you feel EVERYTHING. People have told me the light flywheel will make the ride more uncomfortable in many ways, especially since the RPMs drop much quicker in between shifts than stock.
I had recently purchased a 2003 golf gti AUTOMATIC (with optional shifter) with a 1.8 turbo 4 cylinder engine. The vehicle has 139,000 miles on it. Before purchasing, I had a mechanic come out and look at the vehicle for a pre-purchase inspection, and ran the code P0303 (cylinder 3 misfire) which without test driving, told me that is what caused the shift shudder I noticed when I had test driven it a previous day. He told me the coil packs were in good condition by looking at the top of them, and told me if I replace the spark plugs, the issue should go away.
I feel it is important to mention that he had also run codes on the transmission and nothing came up. Taking it home, this morning I had replaced the spark plugs and driven it for about an hour both regularly and aggressively to test it. The problem is still there, and I was really hoping that there is a solution to this problem, because everything else on the car is beautiful, while being my dream car, I just want it to work as well as I know it can. To be more descriptive, when shifting to 3rd the whole car feels basically like it is tripping over itself before successfully shifting.
Our manual transmission 2000 Jetta's acceleration has begun acting weird. You raise the clutch and give it some gas, but the engine revs and there is a delay before it "catches" and begins to propel the car. What's going on?
View 2 RepliesMy daughter has a 2006 Jetta and has recently experienced issues with acceleration. Merging on expressways and all of a sudden she can't seem to pick up speed and has to get over in the right lane because she is going so slow.
Been to 2 different shops, A neighborhood shop couldn't find anything wrong and neither can the Volkswagen dealer. No Error codes on the computer accept Knock Sensor. She's afraid to drive the car!
Been having an issue with my 01 Wolfsburg VW Jetta 1.8T.
Whenever I'm accelerating (most noticeable in lower gears), it seems like the turbo can't keep up. Used to sound like a nice clean consistent whooooosh spooling up, but now its more like brrrr......brrrrr......brrrrr.....
Don't know how else to describe it. Seems to start and stop frequently. Will try getting a video clip of this tomorrow.
2 nights ago I was driving around the neighborhood. I was coming down a small hill to a stop sign where I could only make a right or a left. I proceeded to turn right and a dog ran in front of the car. I swerved to the left, managing to not hit the dog but run flat into the sidewalk. In the moment it felt like my bumper had just scraped the edge and it sounded like I had just scatched the bottom of the bumper. I proceeded down the street for about 2-3 minutes before my car started slowing down. The engine was still on but when I pushed down on the pedal to accelerate the engine just revved.
When I looked down to see if maybe I had knocked the car into neutral, I couldn't move the shifter and it appeared to be stuck in reverse? When I tried pulling my car to the side of the road I found that now my steering wheel was also locked up and could barely tug it enough to get it moved over. Finally, I made it to the side of the road and now my brakes were locked as well. I managed to stop it with the e-brake but still the shifter wouldn't budge to put it in park. I turned the car off to avoid damaging the engine. I didn't address this problem immediately so I came back the following day to check it out, and couldn't get the car to turn over. I had power, the battery was fine, the engine wouldn't even make a noise like it was trying.
Eventually I looked underneath the car and saw the oil leaking from what I believe is the oil pan? This is my first car and know absolutely nothing about how an engine works. Could this be a computer response so that the engine doesn't seize? Again, the brakes, the gear shifter,and the steering wheel are all locked and won't budge. I used the emergency release lever to realease the gear shifter and was able to pull it into neutral and start the engine but I had to hold the shifter firmly the whole time and if I let go it would pop back into reverse(but it still rolls forward like it's in neutral?). Is this something a warranty or insurance would cover? Hopefully this is just the oil pan because I do not have a fraction of the money to get my transmission or engine entirely replaced.. It's a 2013 VW Jetta 2.5SE with 45k miles on it.
My Jetta ( unleaded, automatic transmission) has stalled on me 3 times. It was gone days between stalling. Each time it has stalled I was stopped and on level surfaces. Two of those times it was in park and once it was in drive. Twice I was able to restart the car immediately and once it kept stalling each time I tried to restart it. I waited about 20 minutes and was able to restart it. The system said that the oil viscosity is incorrect but they replaced the oil.
View 3 RepliesI was at the pump getting gas. Left the engine running. Put in gas. Put the cap back. Checked to make sure it was tight. Got back in the car to find that the engine had stalled. I thought maybe just a fluke. Then it happened again a few days later. Same situation. Last night I was sitting at idle (not at the filling station) and same thing. The engine is not running rough --nor is the idle. I seems to take around 5 minutes or so before stalling. It starts right back up no problem. I had a dealer tune-up about 2 months ago. Replaced spark plugs, plug wires, coil, PCV valve, etc. It cost a small fortune. Why this is happening? 2013 VW Jetta 2.0 ....
View 10 RepliesI just bought a 2003 Camry, 4 cyl (154000 mi.) and the accelerator is a DBW. It feels different than a cable in that it seems to hesitate and after it shifts into second the car accelerates on its own a little bit. This is not a rev up in between shifts, it actually feels like a lurch. It is most noticeable when speeding up slowly. I may be able to get used to it but it doesn't seem right to me. The dealer wants $120 to hook up their computer.
View 1 RepliesMK4 ... I have a 2002 VW Jetta 1.8T with that weirdo tranny (09A for those in the know) with the psuedo manual tiptronic VWtransmission. I don't think the tiptronic has anything to do with this, but here's my problem.3rd gear has gone missing. The car will over-rev high in 2nd and then BAM into 4th (and not, using the Tiptronic does not ameliorate, nor does using the 2nd to 3rd to 4th on the automatic shifter).
Interestingly, when doing tiptronic the car will reflect on the dash that it thinks it is in/going thru 3rd, but obviously is not. HOWEVER, When it rains, 3rd gear re-appears.I would not say things shift like a dream, but certainly not like the aforementioned nightmare. Up shift and downshift occur on time with an occasional hard shift.
My thoughts are that this is due to solenoid(s) conking out. VW says it is lifetime ATF and makes changing it next to impossible for an ape like me. Is it definitely something (solenoid or something else?)?
Occasional clunk when truck is shifting gears. Not consistent. On highway at high acceleration clunk is more apparent. Any thoughts. 2004 v10 with new engine placed at 70,000km now at 85000km. Otherwise truck is running great.

View 7 RepliesI have a 2007 Passat wagon 4 motion V6 and what the problem is I am getting a rough shift between 3-4 gear sometimes, usually on a slow acceleration. I have had the valve body replaced which worked for a couple of months until the problem returned. I then had the transmission replaced which worked a little but the rough shifting is still present at times. The car still has warranty and not even the dealership knows what to do?
View 12 RepliesI have the above referenced car with about 65k miles on it. Today I took it for a drive, switched it to tip-tronic manual and found that the car would not shift past 3rd gear. When I switched to automatic, the transmission stayed on tip-tronic (the display indicated I was on 3rd gear). I had to fully stop the car, place it on park and only then did the transmission switch to automatic.
