Repair :: White Smoke After Oil Change

Jun 8, 2014

So I went 30k over the recommended 3 k oil change. Anyway I got a synthetic change, and while I was leaving I noticed white smoke coming out of the tail pipe, it quickly subsided so I didn't go back to the shop. Anyway throughout the week it had been coming out when i start it up, then stopping short after, now today a week later it is really bad pouring out of the exhaust and even coming through my vents this most recent drive! what could of caused this??? They filled my windshield wiper container up, and i know that either had a leak or is broken because it stopped working a few months ago, could that be causing it?? I don't want to drive it if it is not safe and could damage the engine.

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2007 F250 Blowing White Smoke After Oil Change

I just bought this 2007 F250 a 126K miles on it. Drove it about 1500 miles with no problems. I changed the coolant to Rotella ELC, installed Sinister Diesel Coolant and Oil Filter Bypass, and changed oil to Rotella 15W-40. 3 days after I did this it was in the mid 30's in the morning when I headed to town. It was blowing white smoke, so I stopped and smelled it. It did not smell sweet. I saw what looked liked diluted oil dripping from the exhaust. As I turned around it stopped. I revved it up and no smoke. I headed back into town(around 10 miles) no smoke. Drove home and no smoke. I was at home for about an hour and when I started the truck it was blowing white smoke.

I revved it up a couple times and it went away. I drove about 125 miles and no smoke. I let the truck sit about an hour and when I started it was blowing white smoke and no matter how much I revved the truck it did not go away. I went to work and the truck sat for 3 weeks. I just installed the blue spring kit. Started the truck and no smoke at first. Then, when it went to fast idle a little wisp of white smoke. As soon as I revved the truck up it got worse. Then it blew out what once again looked like diluted oil about 5 feet out the exhaust( I have a huge tractor weight sprayed with this). My first thought was maybe with the thicker oil I am getting some stiction so I am planning to change the oil to 5W-40 and add Hot Shot Secret tomorrow. But blowing the oil like substance out the exhaust has me concerned.

Repair :: Sudden White Exhaust With Sickening Smell?

Bought a used vehicle, 2 and 1/2 weeks later it is suddenly putting out white exhaust for a few minutes after starting up. The exhaust now smells sickening (to me) at all times, and must keep the windows up; I've noticed sneering from others in line at the drive through. I read online that this could be a gasket leak. I checked the oil and it looked clean, so I drove it back to the dealership to have them look at it. They called today to say that "checked the fluid levels" and that there is no evidence of a "consumption issue" at the moment, and suggested I drive it for a while longer and then have them check it again. It came with a 3 month / 4000 mile warranty, and I drive so little 3 months will pass by sooner.

What should I be considering?

Take it to a trusted mechanic and get their separate diagnostic?

I read that antifreeze mixing in the combustion produces white / sweet smelling exhaust... I suppose the exhaust has a sweet component to it.

I purchase my gasoline from the same name brand station in my family's other two cars and neither have problems.

Assuming worst case all around, and it is leaking antifreeze into the combustion chamber... could the dealership be using any sort of laced antifreeze to prevent some drastic breakdown within the 3 month warranty period?

Suppose it runs as is for a year, and then breaks down, if it is leaking antifreeze into the combustion chamber... need a new engine?

I saw a reference somewhere that, if the seal is leaking, a compression test could be done to see how bad... can any shop do this? or is this a specialty work?

Repair :: Oil Overload / Sluggish While Trying To Accelerate / Gray Smoke?

So I put one more extra quart or oil in accidently, and my car started being sluggish while trying to accelerate, no backfiring, just some gray smoke, then the smoke went away, and it stopped being sluggish, the boys at work are emptying out the oil right now, is this normal? Like, the car is working perfectly fine now...

Maintenance / Repair :: Headlights Not Working After Oil Change And Tires Rotated

I recently went to a local chain to have my oil changed and tires rotated. Later that evening when I went to turn on my headlights for the first time since the oil change neither one was working. When I brought back the car the next day to see if they could look at this to see if anything reset accidentally I was told that both lights were burned out and it was a coincidence. It seems unlikely that both headlights would go out at once (high beams were OK) and that it would have happened right after the oil change. I couldn't say what would have caused this but wanted other opinions on if it was likely related to the oil change.

Bmw - 528 :: White Smoke From Exhaust Intermittently

Our family recently purchased a used BMW 528i (40K miles). Perhaps this is nothing, but I just wanted to make sure anyway.

Today, at around 2AM (maybe 50 degrees C), within minutes of starting the car, we drove into a McDonald's Drive Thru. While I was ordering and pressing on the brakes, I noticed continuous discharge of white smoke/vapor from the exhaust. For maybe a minute this continued. When I moved the car a little bit to get closer to the window, the smoke stopped. But when I stopped again to receive my order, I saw the white smoke/vapor again. My friends who were with me told me that it might just be water vapor, but the hypochondriac in me wants to make sure this isn't a blown head gasket or anything else I've read about in the internet. BTW When I drove away from the Drive Thru and continued driving, I stopped seeing the white smoke/vapor.

I'm as clueless you can get with cars. Do I need to be worried?

GMC 6.5 TD Rough Idle And White Smoke When Warms Up

We have a 1996 GMC Sierra 1500 Turbo Diesel and since yesterday, it's had a problem... When it warms up, it runs really rough and misses at idle. While it is doing this, white smoke spills from the exhaust. When we rev it to about 2000 rpm it runs smoothly. Sometimes at idle it misses bad enough to stall. Some say it could be the IP, EGR or injectors?

Touareg :: V10 - White Smoke Coming Out Of Exhaust

I just purchased an '06 V10 a couple weeks ago. Today, I was about 11miles into my 15mile commute when I noticed A LOT of white smoke coming out of the back. The only time I'd seen smoke like that before was just before my old Ford Explorer caught fire. I immediately pulled over and took a look. White smoke (maybe steam?) was billowing out of the exhaust.

I say steam, because it didn't have the strong diesel smell I would've expected. I decided I couldn't sit there parked by the highway, so I got back in the car, checked warning lights and pulled out. Within 1/2 mile, it was gone. Nothing. No more problems the rest of the way. What this might have been? I have 1100 miles on the vehicle and this is the first time it's happened.

Ford Excursion :: White Smoke For A While After Startup

I've been googling for about 3 hours now, and no answers for the gassers, just diesels. When I start my excursion (v10) it pours white smoke for a while, then stops. It does this every time I start it no matter how far I go or how long it sits.

There is plenty of coolant in it and I've never had to top it off, so I don't think it is getting coolant in the cylinder. With that much smoke it wood definitely need coolant if that's what it was. Oil consumption is kind of high in my opinion, but the smoke smells rich.

Suburban :: 99 2WD - Huge Cloud Of White Smoke On Start Up

99 1500 2wd 5.7 burb

Out of the blue I started old red up yesterday (after charging the dead battery) and got a huge cloud of white smoke. Smells of coolant so Im thinking oh great a head gasket. The thing is, I can see no trace of coolant in oil or vice versa. I started it up with radiator cap off, while cranking I got a little fluid spit out the neck but once it started it was not gushing or bubbling at all.

Lexus LS 2007+ :: White Smoke Coming From Pipes

I went to dinner tonight and on the way home I noticed white smoke, coming from pipes. It's 42 degrees outside. I didn't notice any from any cars I saw beside me. I saw it when I got home. It didn't have any smell to it at all. It just felt warm. My girl friends car was not making any smoke either. I have never seen any during the day when it was warmer out.

Jeep - Grandcherokee :: 1995 - White Smoke On Start

We have a beloved 1995 Jeep Gr Cherokee 4L that was our first new car! We have babied it for many years. It now has 173k on it. We took to local Jeep dealer to get all RECALL items taken care of and to have it checked out completely. It was pinging on acceleration and hvac wasn't working. They kept it 5 months and finished all recall stuff and replaced the ENGINE TEMP SENSOR. They also recommended a new trans and a new AC. Since my niece wants it; and she loves it like we do; we took it to an honest transmission shop.

They said trans was fine just needed oil pan gasket, rear main seal and an elec engine diag because trans and engine were not speaking to each other. Now our JEEP is home; sits in driveway all week. When we start the car on Saturday we still have WHITE SMOKE then after driving awhile it goes away. Does not leak oil; does not need coolant; has NEVER over heated. Engine sounds great and it runs great. Had it tested for head gasket a couple of years ago and they said pressure was fine. We have never had to put coolant in it. The dealer and other Mechanics said nothing.

Mercury - Sable :: 1999 - White Smoke Out Of The Tailpipe

This morning I went to start my car and it wouldn't start. So naturally I had it jumped and it started. When it did there was white smoke coming out of the tailpipe. I do want to mention that 2 days ago it was really low on oil and I added 3qts. It is almost 3,000miles over its oil change but this is the first time since I have had the car that the oil has not been changed when it should be. Do you think it just needs a tune up and oil change? My car is a 99' Mercury Sable with over 100,000 miles.

GMC :: Power Loss While Idling But Not Completely And White Smoke

The car has felt like it looses power a little while idling but never has completely. we have had the oil light on for a week but hadn't checked it yet. then it lost power twice while driving so we pulled over and white smoke was coming out of the oil. we added a quart of oil but it would not start... the dip stick was still low, looked dark but not sludge. it might have been leaking the oil we poured in but that could be from the power steering leak we had. started it a few days later. the engine sounded like it was shaking real loud back and forth. What's wrong or should we drive it like that 15 minutes to the mechanic?

Sonata I45 (LF 2015+) :: White Smoke Coming Out Of The Muffler?

How much white smoke do you see coming out of the muffler? I've been seeing it while idling at stop light in my mirrors, and also see it in my backup camera while backing up. This is happening when the engine is already in normal operating temperature.

Been reading google and getting panicky about white smoke meaning that coolant is leaking and getting burned in the engine.

When you check your coolant reservoir, where between the F and the L is it normally supposed to be when the engine is Hot, or Cold?

Accent RB (2012+) :: Coolant Loss / White Smoke

Any known issues with coolant loss on these 1.6 motors?

Seems like I've lose a bit too much considering it's only got 30k on it now (bought it at 10k). Initially smelled coolant and complained but they said it was the undercoating burning off (new car coating) - which to an extent has been correct as I rarely smell it now.

That said, I have no visible leaks to my knowledge but it's still slowly losing coolant. I've yet to need to top it off as it's still between the hot and cold lines (yes I've checked on level ground and made sure to check both hot and cold for variance but it's clearly lower then when I bought it).

Now what scares me more then anything is that I notice a bit of smoke on start up. It does not smell like coolant but it's far more then I typically ever see from just moisture burning off.

I've had vehicles sit for months that don't smoke as much on start up. It will subside eventually but it just seems to be a rather excessive amount and unfortunately I can't tell if it is happening under acceleration, etc.

First though is coolant getting in / head gasket as the idle has been slightly rough....
