I have a 2002 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. There is a slight rubbing noise when I make wide turns and I suspect it is the wheel bearings. How much should it cost to replace these, and how thin is the ice I am skating on if I put it off?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2010 Subaru Forester and it has started to make a weird noise when I make slow and sharp turns, like when I am pulling out of a driveway or entering a parking spot. It is not exactly a knocking noise, it is similar to the one when a small piece of rock is stuck on the tire threads, but it is in the center of the car.

Starting to think maybe a bad cv joint. Is their a way to check if a cv joint is bad? How hard would it be to replace a cv joint and shaft?

View 4 RepliesSo after I come to a full stop and then release the pedal to start moving again the front brakes make a rubbing noise that sounds like a "honk". Im not sure if this is a trait of Automatic cars as the car is trying to push foward on its own. My previous cars were all stick. My wifes car (Auto also) does not do this. Also the Auto Hold feature is very jarring when you step on the gas to go the car almost lurches foward as the brake disengages. Is it just my car or is there something that needs adjustment?
View 1 RepliesI only hear it at low speeds, but I guess that's to be expected. I've heard a similar noise before with other cars/trucks, but I can't recall what causes it. Just looking on tips for where to start looking with the front end parts or wheel/caliper assembly.
Also, but not sure it's related, had a lot of front end wobble when I applied the brakes coming down steep hills last week while pulling a big, but empty, gooseneck trailer. I assumed warped rotors, but later, after I had picked up my load, it quit doing it, albeit I had started babying the brakes. Still, there was one instance of very hard braking and it didn't do it at all, but that was on straight pavement.
It's almost as if having that empty trailer and/or going down a steep hill caused it, and not anything on the truck. But the rubbing sound started before that wobbling. Whatcha think?
I have a '11 GLS sonata, 56000kms ... Over the last few weeks I've noticed a 'vibration' rubbing sound while I'm making a right turn at med speeds or higher. I thought I heard it on the left side but not sure. Only notice the sound while turning.
View 2 RepliesI've been hearing a clicking/knocking noise when i make turns recently and was wondering if it could just be hums in need of replacement... I have a 2002 Passat, so I think its a bit early for it to go but ya never know. If they are the hubs, what causes them to wear out so quick and around how much they'd be to replace (in parts...labor varies). The noise is only when I turn, no noise at all when driving straight.
View 2 RepliesNot quite a U turn but more like 3 point turn without the backing up, for a wide/sharp U turn to go full circle, turning the steering wheel to the max. It's typically a left turn in this case as seldom turn wide & around the other way.
Doesn't happen all the time, might depend on the road surface (level or not, etc.) but when it happens, I hear a faint hissing sound like air leaking or running water in a pipe. What might this indicate? I don't suppose it's normal?
I have a 2015 forester & the seats are not wide enough so my right leg rests on the front corner of the seat & after driving 70 miles my legs & back are hurting. I think the outback has seats 2 inches wider , that could work.

View 4 RepliesI have a 2010 Honda Civic with about 32K miles on it. Last fall, at around 23K miles, I needed new brake pads and rotors (because I waited too long on the pads). Got those replaced. A few weeks later (I think), it started making a kind of squealing noise when I make left turns. I mentioned it to my mechanic when I took it in for an oil change shortly thereafter, and he said it was probably the belt, but I could wait a bit on replacing it if I wanted to (as he knows I'm always broke).
Three weeks ago, I took the car in for another oil change and to have him change the belt. He put in a new belt, but alas, after driving the car about a mile the noise returned. I called my mechanic, and he said it might be my tensioner, but that such a new tensioner shouldn't need replacing already and that it would still be under warranty. I needed to take it to the dealer anyway because my window mechanism was broken, so while I was there, I had him check out the tensioner. He also said the tensioner was fine, and said that since the belt wasn't a HONDA belt (naturally), that might be making the noise. Last week, I took the car back to the mechanic, who ordered and installed a Honda factory belt free of charge.
Naturally, a mile later, the noise returned. I resisted every urge to drive into oncoming traffic. I used my phone to record the sound so that I could e-mail it to the dealer and my mechanic, give it a listen: [URL] ....
Here's the deal:
1. My 2002 SC430 with 23,000 miles on it is making a low rubbing noise when slowing down, with a slight vibration, not severe enough, but it is annoying and frankly surprising on this car. The dealer tells me it's because the brakes have "glaze" on them, and short of a new brake job, you can jam on the brakes to clear or loosen some of this and reduce the noise. ( I live in the desert so I'm sure I could find a deserted stretch or road for this craziness...) The dealer reports the brakes have 70 - 80 percent life on them and I don't need a brake job.
2. Power steering. I thought this particular car was just hard to steer, but even the tech at the dealer commented it's like I have no power steering. I test drove two other cars, and the steering is markedly lighter on the other two SC430's I drove. (2002 and 2005) Dealer can't seem to find an explanation, but I have to drive this car with two hands around town... I know this is not the way this car was intended to feel.
I don't believe the car changed that much from the 2002 model so as to affect the steering. BTW, I'm using stock tires, not run flat, 4 months old. And the steering is stiff at idle anyway, regardless of tires. The first SC I drove, which sealed the decision to buy one, was so quiet I didn't know the engine was running, easy to steer, and smooth.
My 04 gli makes a rubbing noise when accelerating thru hard left turns.. but weird enough i can take the same turn at the same speed in neutral and have no noise at all. I changed both front wheel bearings and cant seem to find the answer. I brought it to vw and they checked the whole suspension struts springs cv's tie rods ect. and they all checked out good they said. the car used to have a exhaust and i just recently put it back to stock, could the exhaust make the noise perhaps?
View 1 RepliesMy car is pulling to one right slightly so I did the alignment. But it didnt eliminate the problem. Ｉ jacked up my car and try to rotate the front wheel. I can hear slight noise of the caliper rubbing the disk and the wheel does not spin freely if I stopped rotating it. However, the noise is subtle so I don't know if it is by design or I have a brake drag.
View 7 RepliesI ask this because when on the hwy (60-70mph) you can feel some vibration in your hands. I can let the steering wheel go and it won't move a bit but when hands placed on it you can definitely feel the road, including bumps, and regardless of road conditions. Tires where balanced at 7500mi but it still happens. Regardless of temperature or PSI in the tire.
I thought we had electric/electronic steering and no hydraulics? Maybe unrelated but, when turning in my driveway, very slow, I can hear a slight clicking (maybe rubbing) noise coming from the steering wheel column. Everything else has to be silent to be able to hear it.
I recently had a close encounter with some large rocks on a bad road and broke the power steering cooler. I lost some fluid and pressure as I had no brakes and it steered like a log truck. Replaced the damaged part and added fluid. I was informed by ford technician that air in the lines would make noise but would eventually work itself out. Well the brakes work and steering is getting better but it is noisy with steering and brakes. How long should it take to get the air out? PS the fluid looks foamy now. I should also mention it was making a slight humming noise before the incident with the rock.
View 9 RepliesI recently (1.5 months ago) had my clutch replaced because my clutch pivot ball was making noise and with 70000 miles on the clutch, the mechanic suggested replacing the entire thing. The clutch works beautifully, except that just recently my clutch pedal has started to make a squeak/ creak noise. It's not very loud, although it seems louder when it's particularly hot and muggy. It sounds like it is coming from the pedal and it makes the noise regardless of whether the car is on or off. What might be causing this?
View 3 RepliesBack in January I had my right front wheel bearing and u-joint go out, so I replaced them both. At the time I didn't realize my outer stub axle shaft was wore so I just put it back in. After a little driving the right side started to "thump" and "pop" when I would make hard left turns driving around town.
I replaced the outer front stub axle shaft and seal again because the old one was worn down. This eliminated any play in the u-joint. After a bit of driving the thumping and popping noise came back.
I decided to dig into it today so I pulled it all apart. When everything is apart it turns easily, no issue at all. When I assembled the wheel bearing, torqued it to 55 ft/lbs and installed and "locked" the hub I noticed something peculiar. I can barely turn the whole assembly by hand. I have to put a good amount of force to get the whole assembly to turn at all. When I walk to the driver side with all the same parts there i can turn the wheel bearing and locked axle shaft with one finger on the studs.
I have been in this thing 5 times and can not figure out what the heck is wrong. I can't figure out why this stupid axle shaft and wheel bearing are so hard to turn, together or separately, and I can't figure out how to get my front end to stop that thumping and popping.
My boyfriend has 95 subaru legacy L 2.2 that has issues. NEW: coil pack, fuel pump, spark plugs n wires, battery. (I forget the rest)
Background: While running the car almost out of gas (as usual) it starts to run rough, just thinking it was the gas, he gets gas and heads home but it does not fix the roughness. It stalls in driveway (lucky). A friend brings over obd scanner. Reads codes for cylinder 1&4 misfire. It starts and runs but sounds like crap. I tested the coil pack and the reading was bad, so got that and sparks n wires. Cleaned a bunch of fuel related parts (its been a while) and took out injector but apparently it was not back in all the way because fuel came spray/flooding out while another friend had a sparkplug out and was testing it for spark!! (luckily he was not harmed).
After this it has not started. We did get the injector back in all the way, and waited to work on it figuring it was flooded and that time would work. Next was the fuel pump, yay i can hear it now, boo still didn't work. Now car clicks. Ok, starter out, tested THREE times at advance auto, and once at napa. They both say it is good. (I have my doubts though, it sounded slow to start up to me). Battery is also tested, bad cell. Checked flywheel, Put starter back in and new battery with 625 cold cranking amps. Car cranks now, but no start. Clicking noise when crankshaft turns.
Q: Do the engine is still flooded?
Q: Did the flooding foul the new spark plugs?
Q: WHY is the crankshaft clicking?
Q: WHERE is the nearest cliff?
I drive a 2007 Subaru Forester X (auto) with 87,000 miles. When driving between 40-50 mph, I can hear and slightly feel a droning noise/sensation. This occurs while accelerating, braking or coasting through that speed range only. I drive on newer tires, but do not experience any shake or steering vibration. Unfortunately, I can't recall if the droning occurred before the new tires were installed. The droning noise is reminiscent of deeper exhaust note.
