We have a 2001 Toyota Camry with 240,000 miles on it. At the last maintenance session, the dealer told us that the funny noise coming from the steering wheel is the "clock spring behind the steering wheel". The dealer would be happy to replace it for us...
View 12 Replies2001 F250, 5.4, Replaced the clockspring and now my steering wheel feels very tight. After cornering, it doesn't come back on it's own, like something is rubbing. The face of the clockspring is slightly different than what was there.
View 1 RepliesI had the clock spring recall done last week and now when I turn my wheel almost to full lock for a tight turn, it has a little "chirp" when going past a certain point. I'll definitely bring it back to them to correct it, but I'm guessing no quick fix but I can easily remove my airbag and check from there.
View 4 RepliesI recently had to put a clock spring inside the steering wheel. I aligned it and calibrated it, however, after this change, the VSC light keeps coming on. I have disconnected the battery, I have used the paperclip on the obd connector and calibrated, but it keeps coming back on after driving a few miles. The car runs great. Along with the VSC light, the vehicle warning light comes on also.
View 1 RepliesI drive a 2000 Grand Voyager with 260,000 miles on it. The airbag light goes on and off and I was told the clock spring is breaking in the steering column. Is there any danger to not having it fixed besides the airbag not going off when it is supposed to, like airbag going off when it is NOT supposed to or function damage to the car or electrical systems. I have mechanics tell me both yes and no. Any thoughts from people here? I'm trying to get as many miles out of it as possible without spending too much on stuff that doesn't need fixed.

In addition to the air bag light being on the horn and the steering wheel cruse control does not work. The fuses and relays are all good. I was wondering if the clock spring is the problem?
View 2 RepliesAdding cruise control to F350 XL I just bought. I got a steering wheel with the buttons. But I am having problems with the clock spring. Mine has an 8 wire plug with only 6 pins on the big plug and all of the clock springs I have found have only a 6 wire plug for the big one. Without changing my clock spring I have no where to plug in the cruise wiring. All have been for right year model with cruise and even tried different years but none will plug in under the dash.

View 5 RepliesI have a 1992 Aerostar Sports edition. My clock spring went bad like 6 months ago. I couldn't find a replacement anywhere. Not even at the Ford. I went to different junkyards and couldn't find the same exact one. Since I wanted to change the steering wheel anyway, i got the steering wheel and the clock spring from a 1999 Ford Explorer Sport at the junkyard. The clock spring fits perfectly and so the steering wheel. My only problem is that clock spring harness is different. I have no problem with the steering wheel side since both the steering wheel and the clock spring came from the same car. But under the dash is a different story. I have the manual for my Aerostar with the wiring schematic for the speed control system (cruise control) and horn but i just can't find the one for the 1999 Explorer. I got one for a 1996 Explorer and have the same wire colors than the clock springs i got from the 1999 Explorer. But i want to make sure I got the right schematic to feel confident I'm doing the job right. I can also use another version for the 1992 Aerostar because mine is a little confusing.
My old clock spring had two harnesses. One for the airbag which I am not going to use (i don't like airbags) and a second one for the cruise control/horn. This harness had four wires. One thick black one that goes to the casing of the ignition switch, and three smaller wires (BK, LB/BK, and Y/LB). The clock spring from the 1999 Explorer has six wires on that harness. One thick black that goes to the ignition switch and five more smaller ones (BK, LB/BK, DG/O, Y/LG, and R/BK). Going by the two schematics i have them figured out (i think), but want to make sure.
My car makes a trouble sound when turning the wheel. It has been to the shop and new steering wheel fluids and a few other adjustments were done. I have a friend his daughters car just started making the same sound. My car has been doing this for months. We both have the same make and year car.

View 6 RepliesThe brake lights come on in the rear after i park the car. it appears the brake pedal is not springing back for enough to disengage the brake lights. It does not do this all the time, but seems to have start doing this at night when it gets colder. I can look outside and see my brake lights on, then go off, then come back on. It has made the battery go dead twice in the last week. is this a easy fix or something more complicated. this has nothing to do with parking brake, i normally do engage parking brake since i park on a flat surface road in front of my home.

So far everything is great about it, only negative part is that i feel when i turn the steering wheel like a knocking sensation and you can also hear it. Its not the normal grinding sound other people are experiencing. It feels like theres something loose in the steering column. Also while I am driving i can hear like a thump on the right front suspension. normally this sound when i am going over bumbs. Is this like the shocks or something?

My car is a 2000 corolla with 51k miles that I bought a couple of months ago.
It had the following problems:
Creaking noise from front drivers side when going over bumps
Steering wheel vibration when braking
Steering wheel vibration (slightly) at certain speeds
Very out of alignment
In august, I replaced the rotors, did a tire balance and alignment. The shop used a Hunter RoadForce balancer. They said that the front tires were bad so they put them in the rear.
After that, the steering wheel still vibrated slightly at certain speeds. Also, the front end would vibrate when the steering wheel vibrated. Also, when braking hard...the steering wheel would vibrate even though the rotors and pads were replaced.
Yesterday, I replaced the front struts/spring/mount...yet the drivers front still creaked over bumps. The strut change also caused the alignment to pull slightly to the left (only very slightly).
Today, I replaced the rear struts/spring/mount, both front ball joints, both front sway bar links.
This fixed ALL of the problems. The steering wheel is now perfect (even when braking), the creaking noise is completely gone. And best of all, the alignment seems to be correct as it no longer pulls from yesterday's front strut change.
Do I really need to replace the tires or even get an alignment? The alignment might be slightly out of spec but it does not pull to any side.
I can hear a "ringing" noise that appears to be coming from one of the wheels. I can hear the noise when I have my windows down and am driving at slower speeds. The noise sounds similar to a bell ringing and the sound disappears when I apply the brakes.
View 4 RepliesToday a creaking noise suddenly developed coming from the steering wheel when turning left at slow speeds. I only have 600 miles on the Tiguan, so was a little surprised to hear this so soon. I have found many others with similar problems on VWs through Google... the problem seems to range from coil springs to tie rod ends. I am hoping that this is just a freak occurrence, but am taking it in tomorrow.
It sounds like "creaking" as if you were shutting a door that needs WD40. That's the best way to explain it.
I have a 2003 Toyota Camry. About 10 months ago, when I get a transmission fluid change, the mechanic told me that my power steering fluid is dirty. A few month later, in the cold winter month, my steering wheel make loud screeching noise when the engine is cold only. The mechanic told me that I have a small power steering leak. But since I don't see the power steering fluid level goes down and the mechanic say I don't have to fix it now, I didn't do anything about it.
About a month ago, there is a squeaking noise come from my steering wheel every time I drive very slowly out of (or into) my driveway and turning the wheel. Now I heard the noise when I drive slowly (10 mph) and turning the wheel too. So what is the problem that cause the noise when I turn the wheel at slow speed? I only drive about 5k miles a year. Is it safe if I just continue to ignore the problem?
Also, the color of my current power steering fluid is amber, but a little dark. Which power steering fluid should I buy?
I have a 1994 Ford Explorer and the cruise control stopped working about a year ago. The horn still works. I changed the fuse but it's still not working. My mechanic checked the cruise control, and was able to determine it was either the clock spring or the control module located above the glove box. He told me it was most likely a bad clock spring, especially considering the number of miles on the truck (385,000). However, in speaking with a Ford dealership parts department, the '94 Ford Explorer does not have a clock spring. So, I'm back to square one.
View 3 RepliesI have a 1991 Toyota Corolla Wagon (150,000 miles) with noise coming from right front wheel well. My car is making groaning and creaking noises like the hinges of an old wooden door. CV joints serviced <5000 miles and the boots are clean and intact. There is no clicking noises during a turn Left or Right. Bouncing the right front corner does not replicate the sounds, tho' there is some slight squeaking noise not heard from the shocks/struts in the other corners. The sound is NOT heard in the morning going to work, but is very noticeable driving home at 5pm. I notice the sound going downhill at 35 mph, but goes away with light braking, Going over railroad tracks does not affect the noises. I'm thinking this could be worn bushings, strut mounts or who knows what?

View 2 RepliesVehicle: 2011 Toyota Matrix XR 4-door hatchback ... A few days ago I noticed that my car started making an odd, very noticeable squeaking noise. The noise is coming from my rear left-hand wheel. It's audible from outside the car, and from inside with the windows down.
The wheel makes a squeak each time it turns, so the frequency increases with higher speed. It's audible from ~15km/h, below which the squeak is barely audible, up to ~70km/h, above which I can't hear it any more, maybe because of wind. It makes a slightly different kind of squeak from the same spot when I'm backing up. There is no other noise of any kind (nothing unusual is heard with the engine on, and the car stationary). There are no other problems at all with the vehicle. It's been about 4000km since my last oil change, I have that coming up soon, but I doubt that is the cause of this, since it's coming from the wheel.
What I can do is take off the wheel and take some pictures of the wheel and breaks to show ....
