A couple of weeks ago there was a discussion about a car that smoked badly when it started. The boys recommended trying some oil additive that might avoid a ring job. What this product was?
View 1 Replies2003 Camry with 141,000 miles. Last 3 months when I start it in the morning, I can see white/gray smoke coming from exhaust for about 20 seconds, then it ends. Car is running no differently ... I'm wondering if it's a PVC or there is an issues with transmission or antifreeze getting into engine via some sort of gasket leak.
View 4 RepliesSay I just purchased an 06 f250 crew cab with the 6.0.
I had her trailered home due to dead batteries. I got her started up and drove about 5 miles until she got up to operating temp.
When I came to a stop and tried to accelerate, she immediately bogged down and started studdering with white smoke coming from the exhaust.
I shut her down and started her up again. She started and idled fine, but as soon as I pressed on the accelerator, she bogged and studdered again. I shut it down again and started it back up. Normal idle, and I shifted her into gear and was able to mozy on idling forward without having her bog, but as soon as I touch the accelerator, she bogs and studders.
I towed it home and the next day (today) she started just fine and I shifted her into drive and moved it forward about 10 feet. Did not touch the accelerator so she didn't big or studder.
1. I am guessing the white smoke was coolant burning through a failed EGR circuit. Do you seasoned members agree?
2. It the a check engine code when studdering. I have yet to check codes so I am still in diagnosis mode.
3. I plan to block off the EGR pipe and throw in a new oil cooler. Anything else immediate I should be considering??
I was working with a friend for his 2002 Camry with a 3.0 and while looking at it he said the front exhaust manifold was clogged (The dealer told him) So I change it and tried starting it and it sounded like it was going to start then nothing. He had a timing belt put on a year ago by a dealer and it has been sitting since January. Mean while the Mice have been making themselves home and I am wondering if they got into the timing cover and did something to the teeth on the belt to make it back fire. I just put new spark plugs in and it still back fired.. Or is it coil packs.. You definitely see gas on the old plugs and smell it to..
View 2 RepliesI recently purhased a 2012 Camry, and hear a crackling noise from around the exhaust area as soon as I start the car and during idling. The noise is not too loud, so can be heard from the driver's seat only if the AC is off, windows are down and if the outside environment is relatively quiet. However, when I get out of the car and stand near the exhaust area, it is quite audible. Drove 4-5 miles and stopped and the noise still existed during idling. I'm not sure if it exists while driving as it may not really be audible at the driver's seat. Is this normal or do I need to get it checked.

View 3 RepliesI have a question regarding a leak i have in the manifold of my toyota camry 2002 2.4 cylinder. the engine check light is coming up and after a check on the mechanic there is a leak in the manifold where the catalytic converter is attached. when you put your hands near the pipe, you can feel air coming out. See the image attached.

I get a call from my mother saying their 1994 Toyota Camry 2.2L car won't start. I went over there today and the first thing I check was the spark. I hooked my spark tester and had my dad crank the engine over. No spark. So I removed the distributor cap and tested the resistance on the primary and secondary sides of the coil. The secondary side was low. So I went and got a new coil, installed it and it still wouldn't start. I checked the spark again and it had spark, but still wouldn't start. I then proceeded to check the fuel pressure. I hooked up my pressure tester to fuel filter, with the included adapter, and had my dad turn the ignition switch to ON position. No pressure. Then I had him try and start the engine, the pressure jumped up to 41 PSI. I then sprayed a little gas into the throttle and the engine would try to start. I'm stuck.
View 5 RepliesA month or two ago I noticed my car starting to turn over a bit slower. Then finally woke to car that would not start. I tapped on the starter and it turned over. I took the car to local AutoZone store, tested the electrical system while the car was running...Starter - Good, Alternator - Good, Battery had a few dead cells. I also took out the alternator and starter to have them bench tested. Both passed. So I put everything back and got a new battery. Seemed to have fixed the problem for a couple weeks. Then today go out to start the car and the same thing. Car won't turn over...pop the hood a little tap on the starter and it turns over just fine. Same cycle all day...Turn off car, then wont turn over unless I tap the starter. So I take it out again, and take it to the local auto store...Starter passes again.
It seems like it must be the Starter if the tap works, but I thought the bench tests were pretty accurate? All the cables and connectors look to be in really good shape and if it were the Starter Relay, Alternator, or Battery I wouldn't think that tapping the Starter would make any difference.
I have a 2012 Toyota Camry LE and I wanted to add a dual exhaust system like the camry se has, where could i find it? or could it fit the 2010-11 Camry dual exhaust system to my camry? and if it does, where could i find that?
View 6 RepliesHit a nasty speed bump and now the exhaust system on my 97 Camry is making a new sound. I see a cylinder shape which looks like the outside of woven basket. Did the cover come off my catalytic converter? (I was carrying six adults on a Mass. state park road that was as level as the Appalachian mountains with a speed bump half of which had been stolen by local bears.)

The relays are not labeled other than the starter one. Anyway, my car will crank but not start. Acts like the timing is out. That belt was replaced 19000 miles ago...

View 3 RepliesRecently purchased a used 2003 Toyota Camry LE. After a recent oil change at the local Toyota dealer we noticed that when we start the car in the morning a puff of white smoke spews out from the exhaust for a few seconds and stops. There is no more white smoke while driving the car around. The car runs perfect and has no power loss. Initially we had noticed it was losing coolant. All the discussion on the internet pointed to a bad head gasket. We had a mechanic look at it and it turned out that the radiator was leaking and hence the loss of coolant. He also noticed the oil was overfilled so he brought it down to the normal level. The mechanic also checked the head gasket and claimed there were no issues with it. Replacing the radiator took care of the coolant loss but the white smoke still comes out only the first time the car is started.

A 2007 Toyota Camry 2.4 was brought into the shop I work at smoking badly and running terrible. The car had been run hot because the radiator was busted and it blew the head gasket. So I pulled the head and sent if off to the machine shop to have it checked. They said it was badly warped across three cylinder and they resurfaced it.
Now I have everything re assembled, but it simply will not start. All the timing marks on the timing chain line up where they should be. All four coils are firing. Injectors wires pulse noid lights. A few times it has hit and sputtered like it was trying to start but never successfully does.
Just bought for around town. Problem with starting. Turn ignition and sometimes hear grind. Second try in neutral and she starts right up. I don't know if it's problem with key ignition/coil, or the starter.
Also need to convert a/c, fan ok but no cooling. Is this major cost to convert?
I've a 2007 Toyota Camry (LE 2.4 L 4-cylinder). Couple of days ago I tried to start the car and I heard this banging/grunting sound as I started the car. And, after the car started the engine is running much louder. Oddly enough when I got out of the car and opened the hood the noise didn't seem that loud. In other words, it sounds louder from inside the car than standing outside with the hood open.
Before all this, the engine ran very smoothly and very quite. Here is a link for two audio files that captures the sounds. Note that I recorded these two clips from inside the car.

I have an '02 Camry with 82,000 miles. I recently noticed a clicking from the front left wheel starting at 68-70 mph. The click varies in frequency with slight bumps in the road. It seems to stop if I touch the brakes, and it might get less if the road turns enough to increase the G force (not too many times on highway going this speed on a curvy road, so I'm not sure.) It never happens under 65 mph.
We recently had local flooding and I drove through about 8 inches of water. The noise was a few days later in dry weather at 80 degrees. It did not occur when the car was starting off cool, but not until I was driving for about 5-10 minutes. The tire and wheel look OK, but it has not been on a lift nor have I been to a mechanic yet. I don't want to get talked into expensive repairs that I don't need, but I don't want to put off something now that is dangerous or will turn into a bigger expense later.
Car: 2007 2.4L Hyundai Sonata 76k miles
Problem: All of a sudden my car has developed an intermittent smoky smell in the cabin (I'm NOT a smoker). There are no check engine lights on and the car is running fine. The smell is not the classic "hot engine block" smell of the car overheating (which it is not according to the gauge). The smell I am getting is a hot smoky smell, doesn't smell like rubber either. No visible smoke in the cabin or the engine compartment.
Smell usually shows up after driving the car for around 2 minutes, but can vary and sometime not show up at all. The only thing that I can comment is a chirping sound from the pulleys that seems to be associated with humidity (power steering, radiator, etc) and the A/C blower intermittently not working (have not had any issues in past 3 months). How I can diagnose this?
