Liver Enzymes Twice The Upper Limit

Jul 27, 2015

I was recently informed by my primary care doctor that my liver enzymes are nearly twice their upper limit.

I scheduled to get repeat blood work done, but I was given the impression that those enzymes are most commonly elevated by binge drinking or large doses of Tylenol.

I am a young man and have not had any alcohol in the past year (and nothing more than a glass of wine in the past 4 years) and have not taken any Tylenol (or any pain killer) for the past 6 months.

I do take allergy medication daily (Zyrtec, occasionally Benadryl), but that has not changed since my last round of blood work, in which my liver enzymes were fine.

1) Besides disease, why could my enzyme values be so high?

2) What other tests/steps would have to be preformed to determine whether or not I have an illness?

Liver Tests :: Possible Fatty Liver With Elevated Enzymes

Been feeling lightheaded and brain foggy and a bit sick recently with some stomach grumbling and pain. Went to the doctors who did repeat blood tests over the course of 8 weeks and have said my enzymes are slightly up which could be the result of mild fatty liver. My question is does this sound related? He's also just tested me for celiac, but told me in the beginning that I could be fighting a virus. I'm worried that the 3 diagnoses he's given are so different I don't know what to believe, also does this mean I should be less worried about the tests because they are low enough to be anything?

Liver :: Reactive Hypoglycemia Raises The Liver Enzymes?

I've recently had 2 LFT that both showed raised enzymes, I've had a scan and it shows I have gallstones, however I am currently undergoing investigation into whether I have Reactive Hypoglycaemia, my question is that if I do have RH, would this cause my liver enzymes to elevate?

Fatty Liver :: Feeling Of Swelling, Bloating And Pain In The Upper Right Abdomen

Last week I went to the hospital because my stools were black. They tested for blood but found none. Blood tests showed slightly elevated liver enzymes so they did an US and diagnosed me with fatty liver. That evening I began to notice swelling/faint pain in my upper right abdomen. I thought it was because of all the pressure from the US. It's been a week and it seems it's only gotten worse. Pain/swelling feeling extends from below the rib cage, don't my right side and i also get intermittent pain in my right lower back.

Once I got the diagnosis I changed my diet and stopped drinking. I'll be honest I used to eat horribly. Fast food, frozen meals, high fat, sodium and sugar. I became almost addicted to minute maid lemonade and drank 1-2 liters a day. All that HFCS is what I think mostly contributed to the fatty liver. I don't drink all that often (although when I did it was usually heavy). 2 years ago I used to drink a lot (though still only on the weekends) but up until my diagnosis it would be maybe few times a month tops.

I'm beginning to worry that they misdiagnosed fatty liver and it's something more sinister like cirrhosis. Other symptoms include fatigue, sometimes when I breathe I can take a full breath but it's like I'm not getting enough oxygen. It's hard to describe, almost as if the swelling in my abdomen is crowding my lungs. Lastly, my stools are now very light brown and loose (I honestly can't remember the last time I had a normal BM). I have a follow up with a GI Dr but that's not for 3 weeks.  All of this has triggered some severe health anxiety that I once had as a child after an oral surgery.

Does anyone with fatty liver experience this feeling of swelling, abdominal bloating and pain in the upper right abdomen, right side and lower right back?

Coeliac Disease :: When To Visit Doctor - Symptoms Limit

Can I ask what symptoms other people have experienced before being diagnosed with Celiacs?? I am concerned I may have celiacs, I am due to see a doctor next week to discuss. I don't have all the symptoms but have had bloating, chronic constipation, (had issues with both for years) flaky scalp (not severe) and a skin condition on my feet. My doctor told me this was eczema two years ago but it can flare up quite extreme, soare, itchy, fluid filled blisters, flaky skin, red, rashy when at its worst. But it tends to come and go? Does anyone else suffer from the same?

Alcohol Consumption :: Drinking / Weekly Limit Guidelines Laughable?

In our village, it is recycling collection day this week on Friday. We have to separate, cardboard, papers, plastics, cans and glass bottles into different containers. The cans & bottle containers were moulded plastic with lids.

Over the years, all the lids have been lost, broken (council never replaces them) or they will not fit on with the pyramid of contents.

The amount of beer cans and beer/wine bottles I see in these containers as I walk around to the village shop (before the collection has been), would mean just about every household in the village is occupied by alkies.

I just don't know what real world the people that set these limits live in. A decent pint of lager these days is at least 2.5 units. Therefore having six pints on a Friday, not only puts you over you weekly limit, but means no other drinking whatsoever for the rest of the week. It's not realistic.

Nodular Contour /Heterogeneous Liver Suggest With Normal Liver Labs?

My mother is a 65 year old female, 136 lbs, and on peritoneal dialysis for 3 years due to End Stage Renal Disease. Last week, she began experiencing severe abdominal pain that was a burning/gnawing pain. She went to the hospital and a CT Abdomen was taken without contrast. All was normal.

Over the next four (4) days, the pain persisted, particularly during dialysis exchanges at home. She returned to the hospital who admitted her. Another CT Abdomen was taken at this time which showed "nodular contour on the liver", free air in transverse colon which appeared to be dilated. She was also constipated for several days during this period. The CT impression suggested clinical evaluation for chronic liver disease.

A standard liver panel was taken and all results were normal. Nothing even close to elevated. She has never had a history of any liver issues and never had anything show on a CT for liver. After a day in the hospital, all stomach pain disappeared, she was able to use the restroom, and all stool samples/GI tests were normal without blood. She is naturally anemic due to ESRD with low iron/protein. Her last ANA/autoimmune panel was in December, all clear. No history of any hepatitis.

An Ultrasound Right Upper Quadrant was performed and the impression was no biliary obstruction, moderate ascites (tends to be normal due to peritoneal dialysis fluid), and "heterogeneous liver." The impression suggested referral for cirrhosis evaluation.

She began taking Hydralazine (25mg/3 times daily) in the last 3-4 months. She also takes a host of other blood pressure medicines.

QUESTION: She is currently awaiting a kidney transplant and very worried about this. A blood test will be taken in a couple weeks by a specialist that is supposed to diagnose Cirrhosis. Given this presentation alone, what other causes could explain this imaging results? Should we fear the worst?

Liver Tests :: Echogenic Appearing (non Alcoholic) Fatty Liver

I had an abdominal ultrasound done for some abdominal pain and it was noted in the report as an impression that I had an echogenic appearing liver (such as non alcoholic fatty liver). My doctor at that time didn't tell me and just said my report was normal. When I went in for my Colonoscopy that was unrelated, it was mentioned again and when I did some research I realized what fatty liver actually was. I switched doctors.

My new doctor is considering giving me a CT scan but is checking with the GI department to see if they think its needed, etc. etc. But that there is no treatment for it besides diet modification.

Here's the thing. I don't have any of the risk factors. I am not overweight. I'm actually underweight slightly (BMI is 18, I weigh 110 lbs). I don't drink any alcohol, never did. And I don't have diabetes or hepatitis. The only thing I could do and what I have been doing is change my diet. I stopped eating processed foods, watched my sugar/carbs, and eat more vegetables than I ever have.

I'm a very anxious person and I'm not sure I want to know what the scan says. If it's worse than what I thought, I'm going to be so upset and stressed out. And I can't treat it anyway. It's not like they can give me a medication and make it go away. I think knowing the extent of it will just cause me mental anguish and I'm already stressed out about it as is.

Atorvastatin Causing Liver Damage, But Helps Fatty Liver?

My Cholesterol was 7.8 and I was put on Statins 3 years ago.  Because they gave me pains in my legs and other areas I stopped them.

A year ago my Cholesterol was still high and I had changed doctors and was prescribed Atorvastatin 10 mg after 2 months my doctor sent me for blood tests and in a phone call when I was at work he told me that Atorvastatin had caused Liver damage.  He said I should stop taking the tablets immediately, pity this advice was not put on my notes so that when I phoned for my blood results a week earlier the receptionist could inform me to stop Atorvastatin.  She just said Doctor will be in touch via phone call next week

He referred me to a Liver Specialist.

I went to see Liver Specialist after having Liver Ultrasound.  Fatty liver was diagnosed and Liver Specialist promptly put me back on Atorvastatin claiming this would help my fatty liver.  I couldn't believe it but what could I do?

Local GP had advised me to have bloods done again after being on tablets for 2 months.  When my results came back the Locum doctor I saw said "whoa your Liver is not happy" STOP the tablets and have a blood test in 2 weeks.

2 weeks later Liver levels are coming down so thats a good direction.  Dilemma is I have to see my Liver Consultant 16 June 2015.  Wish me luck!

Hepatitis C :: Heroin Addicted - Elevated Enzymes Means Active Virus?

I'm a recovering heroin addict. For 7 or 8 Years I used heroin and participated in Many high risk behaviors, mainly sharing of needles and reuse of my own needles. I was tested last week to get on Accutane, and they said my test came back reactive and I had to go for a second test to see if I have the active virus. They also told me my liver enzymes were high. My question is, is with elevated enzymes, is that indicative of active virus? I'm going crazy waiting for results. And is there anything that could've made my levels high besides an active virus? And if I have the active virus, I've had it for at least 3+ years, because I haven't used or participated in that behavior or drank in 3 years, so what will be done to treat it?

Liver Tests :: Reduce Alcohol To Reduce Further Liver Damage

Just before christmas I received a letter from my hospital saying “ recent blood tests show a slightly abnormal liver function and the scan revealed cirrhosis. It is absolutely crucial that you consider urgently reducing your alcohol intake to avoid further liver damage. I would be grateful if you could see your gp to discuss this further.”

Immediately I phoned my gp and couldn’t get an appointment for 2 weeks, when finally seeing my gp she referred me to a councillor, which took another 2 weeks before I saw them, only to be told they don’t have a clue at what stage my cirrhosis is?

Digestive Disorders :: Bloating? Probiotics? Digestive Enzymes?

Hey everyone! I have had an ongoing problem that I have tried multiple things to fix with my bloating issues.. To start I am petite and not overweight.. In the morning my stomach looks good and flat than any little thing I try to eat it bloats up and continues to through out the day until the next morning. This is a very stressful thing for me and I am on the path to try to resolve it. I have tried probiotics quite a few brands like Align, as well as others.. I have also taken digestive enzymes again a few different brands. I take fiber tablets and started taking peppermint oil caps and drinking lemon water every day. Nothing really has seemed to help. I did go to a doctor almost 2 years ago and they ran tests and said well nothing seems to be showing in your blood work have a nice day kind of thing. I get when you eat a large meal that this sort of thing can happen but its small things too like a banana, apple, a couple crackers, a piece of chicken.. basically anything.. I am wondering if anyone has had the same type of issues they may be able to give me guidance on.. Also, I do have an appointment set up for a gastrointestinal doctor in August maybe they will be able to help but this problem is really annoying and makes me very self conscious...

Bladder (UTI) Infections. Upper UTI?

Has anyone had an upper UTI infection before? - I just got a UTI last night around 1am, burning while peeing, sluggish, etc, but later tonight I started feeling tenderness around my flank area underneath my rib cage, nothing painful, but I can feel it. I'm not sure if that's just natural gas or what. I've been drinking 100% pure cranberry juice for the past 2 hours with lots of water, so I'm wondering if that helps at all?

Upper Gastroscopy (Endoscopy) With Sedation

I am sixteen years old and had an Upper gastroscopy yesterday!

Firstly DON'T WORRY! Alls I did was worry and it really was ok.

I checked into the hospital, and waited in my bed for about half an hour. I was then taken to a pre-theatre room, where i was told to lie on my back. I had my throat sprayed and it numbed it instantly. I then had the sedation put into a vain in my hand. The doctor then told me to lie on my side, but I couldn't as I was already sedated (That's how quick it works!)

DON'T worry about the air being pumped into you, I didn't feel a thing!

The next thing I knew, I woke up and it was all over. The procedure only lasted for 5 minutes.

I waited around for about one hour for the sedation to ware off and then I went home with my mum and boyfriend.

Today I woke up with mild stomach pains due to the fact I had a BIOPSY took of my stomach, but as the day wore on they gradually got smaller.
