Severe Nerve Pain After Flat Foot Reconstruction And Bunionectomy (4 Weeks Post Op)

Sep 1, 2015

I am on week 4 after my surgery. I am wondering if there is anyone that could give me some hope. Right not walking of going PWB on my foot seems like light years away. I am having severe nerve pain and my foot still brings me to tears on occasion. I am taking Ibuprofen to help with the pain and down to two Percocet a day. When did you notice a huge improvement in your pain and will the pain be mostly gone by the time I go into my boot.

Foot / Ankle :: Flat Foot Reconstruction, 8 Weeks Postop With Heel Pain

I am currently 8 weeks post op from a very extensive flat foot reconstructive surgery . I was excited to start partial weight bearing this week starting w 25 percent in a boot.

My problem is I have sharp pains coming from the bottom of my heel which I am thinking may be from the screws from the calcaneal osteotomy. This is making it very difficult to put any pressure on my foot when weight bearing ?

Has anyone experienced this ? Did it go away on its own? Was there anything that helped this . I am afraid I will not be able to proceed the wt bearing with this continued heel pain.

Foot / Ankle :: 7 Weeks Post Op - Reconstruction Of Foot

I had reconstruction of my left foot. I am 7 1/2 weeks Post op. I was in the hospital for 4 days with a nerve block behind my knee and drugs through a pushbutton pump. pain was managed. I was sent home with perks and vicodin.

For the first week I was told to take the pain meds before I felt the pain which was every 4 hours. After the perks I was able to use vicaden, however I didn't like the vicodin so I went to tramadol. That was only for the first two weeks. My dr does not believe in hard drugs after that. I was in a cast for two week which was the worse for me😔I felt very confined and tight.

Went back to the Dr to only find out an additional 4 more weeks in the cast. Total of 8 weeks, I am now in a boot an able to bear 1/3 of my weight along with PT and exercises at home.Weight bearing is gradual. Takes 3 months for full weight bearing. It is a very long process with lots of patience.
My knee roller is a blessing. Before weight bearing I tried hopping on crutches and fell, please don't try that.

Be honest I haven't felt myself since surgery hope it's part of recovery...I would like to know if you feel not yourself yet after 7 weeks. I am the type of person that loves to run out every chance I get and sometimes I am not up to it because it's tons of work with the boot. I sincerely hope after 3 months I can work by myself. Let me know if anyone feels the same.

Foot / Ankle :: Flatfoot Reconstruction Experience - 7 Weeks Post Op

I had my surgery 7 weeks ago and am finally in a boot and can walk again with the help of 1 crutch. I am driving and going to physical therapy 3x a week. The first 5 weeks were very hard not being able to put any weight on my foot. A knee scooter was a tremendous help. I was not In very much pain and got to go shopping and out to eat. Getting the cast off at 5 weeks was great. Hopefully the rest of my recouperation will be as easy.

Post-surgical Boots :: Foot Pain After Double Bunionectomy

I had a double bunionectomy on December 10th. I'm healing fine, but my problem now is from wearing the post-surgical boots. I was told I would need them for walking for 6 weeks. I'm trying to spend as little time as possible on my feet, but when I walk I can feel all the pressure on the outside and heel of my foot. It doesn't bother me during the day, but every night around 2 or 3 a.m. I'm awakened with searing pain on the outside of both my feet. It's excruciating! Has anybody else had this problem, and if so do you have any suggestions on how to prevent/ease the pain? I'm trying to get back to work, but it's frustrating when I'm not getting enough sleep.

Flat Foot Reconstruction Surgery - Success Rate?

I have suffered with flat feet all my life. I have had pain for at least 5 years now and within the last year, my condition has deteriorated. My ankles are now rolling in on both feet. I have been to see both Dr Deland and Dr Ellis (he takes my insurance) and they both agree that I need the surgery on both feet (eventually). My questions to everyone who has had this surgery are what has been your success rate? Has it changed your life for the better or the worst? Would you do it again? What was the worst part? And finally, any diabetics out there that have had this surgery? How was your recovery with the diabetes? Any and all answers are greatly appreciated! I am scared out of my mind, but living like this is scaring me even more.

Foot / Ankle :: Pain Outside Of Foot After Flat Foot Surgery

I am 7 1/2 weeks post of from Flat Foot Surgery and the outside area of foot from where my incision ends from the double calcaneal osteotomy up to my little toe the soft tissue is halfway numb and very painful. Has anyone else experienced this and if so how long did it last.

I am not sure how long it takes the soft tissue to heal to a point where it does not hurt when you are not walking. Or is what I am feeling nerve pain. I started PT this week and am PWB. My doctor thinks I will be in a shoe in 3 weeks and I don't know at this rate how that could be possible. I am icing a majority of the day for sure after I do my PT exercises.

Post Op Bunionectomy - Discomfort While Walking On The Other Side Of Foot

I had a Bunionectomy and bone fusion surgery 8 weeks ago. I am now out of my boot and walking short distances in thick socks and ugg like boots which keeps the foot secure. I have no pain from the Bunionectomy at all and it has healed remarkably well. Strangely I am feeling discomfort and pain when I walk on the other side of the foot.  Is this where the ligaments and muscles have weakened from not walking on the foot for 8 weeks.  Has anyone else experienced this?

Transitioning To A Shoe (11 Year-old Daughter - Post Flat Foot Surgery)

It's been awhile since I've posted. My daughter had flat-foot surgery on her left foot on Dec 17, 2014 (subtalar arthroereisis and gastroc recession). Had this same surgery on the right foot and calf a year to the day in 2013 as well, with excellent results. As an aside, prior to surgery in 2013, her right foot was more troublesome than the left, but the left was an issue as well. Last time, she was at about 80% healed by April. We were very happy about that.

On the one hand, she's coming along nicely with this recent surgery. She goes to PT twice a week, doesn't mention any pain during the day in the walking boot, is in good spirits, and takes the boot off at home and meanders around without it, barefoot. I would think that this would hurt (I kinda cringe when I see her doing it) but she insists she's okay. She has a slight limp, but I figure technically, it's still kind of early yet.

What has me a little concerned is that she isn't tolerating a shoe. When we last saw the surgeon about three weeks ago, he said it was fine for her to start transitioning to a shoe. Yet here we are three weeks later, and she still prefers to wear the walking boot. Says that her heel hurts when it's in a shoe (how it doesn't hurt when she walks barefoot at home: I have no idea.

She is required to wear tennis shoes at school, and she's been wearing New Balance for years now. When I look at last year's calendar and reflect on the surgery for her other foot, I recall that she was further along in the process. She was already wearing shoes at this point. Walking slowly yes, but was wearing shoes.

I wondered...should I maybe go up 1/2 a size? Maybe her old shoe is too snug in the heel now, or there may still be some swelling? Should I got up 1/2 size AND go wider?

She's having an orthotic made for the left foot, and maybe that will help. She has some school events (field trips) coming up at the end of April and also in May and I was hoping she'd be easily walking on her own before then, and able to participate.

Pain A Year After Bunionectomy Foot Surgery

I had bunionectomy surgery on both my feet last summer, so its been 16 months for my right foot and 15 months for my left foot. I had hallux limitus on both feet, and my doctor broke the bone on both big toes, shortened them, cleaned up the joint and bunions on both feet, and removed a bone spur. I was about 8 years into this problem, so my foot problem was getting to be a big issue. Walking has been my main form of exercise for years. I no longer have pain in the joints of my toes but my big toe does not lay flat anymore. My second and third toes take all the pressure, and my second toe feels like I am walking on the bone, starting to get very painful. I also have pain in the ball of both feet, and it is getting worse. I started exercise walking gradually but do it very little now....maybe 1/2 a mile once or twice a week. My podiatrist said there were no exercises to do after surgery, no pt. I went to a different podiatrist about 5 months ago, and he said he could break my other toes, and try to line them up with my big toe to try and relieve the pressure, but of course I don't want to do that. Anyone have an experience like this, or thoughts?

Foot / Ankle :: Brostrom Ligament Reconstruction - Still Pain

I had a modified brostrom ligament reconstruction back in October of 2013. I am still having a LOT of pain in my ankle. It is very much more stable now that it used to be... Before the surgery it was like every step it was close to popping out of place due to the ligament, however I still have severe pain in my ankle and shin... Does anyone else experience the same issue, and any advice on what I need to do? I called the OS and they recommended me going back to the brace and although that works, I would like to at some point be without the brace, because it hurts even with the darn brace on!!!! It just feels more protected while in the brace but it doesn't stop the pain from happening.... It aches like when you have the flu, I feel achy in the ankle all the time, but w/o the brace it HURTS about a 5 out of a 10.. I have a very high pain tolerance and would say the pain is about the same as it was before the surgery.. The pain before the surgery was never so bad I couldn't deal, but it was like all day nagging pain... I am still having that pain. Is that normal 6 months after surgery?

Foot / Ankle :: Nerve Pain On Top Of Foot

It has been quite a while since I have been on here. I had surgery on Mar 14 to repair a tendon and release the nerve that runs on the top of my foot. I have had severe nerve pain since the surgery. I could only get so far in rehab - because of the severe nerve pain. I had a cortisone shot about five weeks ago - it was somewhat helpful. I can finally let a sheet rest on the top of my foot.

However, it is my right foot. It is extremely painful to drive - and basically impossible for me to be able to drive more than 25 miles without pulling over to alleviate the pain from the nerve. I still cannot wear anything more than sandals as I cannot let anything touch the top of my foot. Now mind you, it has improved some. It used to be the entire top of my foot. Now it is mainly the toes and about 3 inches up from my toes - it is so severe it has put me in tears more than once. I have been living with some friends of mine - about 25 miles from where I work. The problem is that I own a house about 52 miles from work - one way. There is no way I can drive that far - and don't think that will get better anytime soon.

I see my surgeon again on 8/16/13. I am willing to try another cortisone shot - but someone else has strongly recommended I cut the nerve to alleviate the pain. If he cuts the nerve - I will not have any feeling on the top of my foot for the rest of my life. I have asked him if I would be able to drive, etc....and he commented that cutting the nerve might actually make driving/pain worse?

Foot / Ankle :: Bump Foot After Bunionectomy

I had a bunionectomy 6 days ago, been doing great, and just tripped in my living room, which resulted in a fall. I fell on the operated toe and of course wasn't wearing my surgical shoe. I'd guess it was pretty minor, some addition throbbing, but nothing extreme. The post-of sheet I got indicated to call the podiatrist immediately after bumping or injuring one's foot. It's evening now, so I'm curious if others here have experienced that, and if so, did you go back to see the doctor? Is it pretty safe to assume that all is still good if pain hasn't increased by the morning?

Foot / Ankle :: Sitting With Foot Down After Bunionectomy

I had a bunionectomy/osteotomy a week ago and as with basically everyone here, was instructed to elevate and ice that foot. Non-weight-bearing for 5 weeks, on crutches, and very minimal activity for the first 4 days. Now, I don't recall being told, not have I asked, when I might be able to try sitting with my foot down. I have it fully elevated (at least 6" above heart) around 95% of the day. When I take it down, it's only to have it flat on the couch, but not my feet on the floor. My first post-op appointment isn't for another 1.5 weeks when the sutures are removed, so I'm curious if I could maybe start having my operated foot down a few minutes or so here and there. I find in the mornings, after it's been propped up on 2 pillows all night, it starts out throbbing when blood flow first goes back to it, but then calms down after a few minutes.

Diabetes :: Nerve Pain? Severe Pain/tingling In Feet/ankles

My 50 year old husband has been a Type 1 diabetic since he was 21. It was a late presenting of juvenile diabetes or so they said then. He has always done well managing his diabetes, wearing a pump for the past 15 or so years. In the past week or so, he has begun to have severe pain/tingling in his feet/ankles - mainly at night when he is trying to go to sleep. He usually has to get up and walk several times before he can finally sleep - he is only getting about four hours of sleep per night. He has an appointment with his dr - but not until the week after New Years.

Foot / Ankle :: 3 Weeks Post Op Ocd Debridement And Microfracture

3 months ago I got injuries at work, and at first didn't think it was bad... Fast forward to now. I'm almost 3 weeks post op for the ocd lesion in the round bone on my right ankle. My OS said it was a 12x7 lesion, and he done the debridement and microfracture. I fell on day 4 after surgery and landed on my right foot. I was put in a plaster cast on day 5. I fell again just a few days ago, and landed on recovering foot, since then i have had the a lot more pain, in the exact spot before the surgery and at the surgery site. Could these 2 falls in such a short time messed up the surgery? And what happens if the surgery doesn't work? All I want to do is get better so I can get to work, but I work at a factory and I stand on my feet 8 to 12 hours a day 6 to 7 days a week.

Foot / Ankle :: Nerve Pain

I have been dealing with pain in my feet for several years which has gotten progressively worse. The past 6 months or so have been so bad that 3 months ago my doctor prescribed Gabapentin which helped significantly for a brief few weeks, but I am at the highest levels now and there is a new pain in my right ankle that will just not go away. I am weaning off of the Gabapentin so that I can try Lyrica. I am being scheduled for a nerve conduction test to try and determine what is wrong exactly. I am not diabetic. I believe it is from too many years of standing/walking on concrete (I'm a caterer/chef) without proper foot support. My doctor seems to support this opinion, she does not seem to have any answers. Just had blood work done, I am in excellent health otherwise! Am so worried that I'll be unable to continue working. Pain is relentless. Cannot live on pain pills, just do not want to go down that road! Anyone out there have experience with this sort of problem? How about Lyrica?

Foot / Ankle :: Crutches After Foot Reconstruction

If you used both crutches and a knee walker after surgery, how much did you depend on your crutches? I tried using crutches today for my upcoming surgery, and I don't think I can go more than 15 feet with them because of elbow problems.

Bad Foot Pain After DeNovo Surgery - Nerve Pain?

I had DeNovo surgery on my ankle 4 months ago - lesion was 11 x 13. Surgery went well. I was NWB for 6 weeks, then in boot for 4-6 more weeks with PWB. Started PT at 10 weeks and was out of boot at 12 weeks. No problem with recovery or PT until that point. After I was fully weight bearing I had much more pain. On sides and bottom of foot as well as at surgery site. Still have lots of pain and sensitivity if I walk barefoot. PT was successful as far as ROM and strengthening but he doesn't want to push me any further because of pain.

OS says too early to say it did or didn't work, but I think it didn't and he won't do MRI until 6 months. He'll give me pain meds, but I don't like them and don't react well to them. The foot pain is bad! Could it be nerve pain?

I knew this was a long recovery, but I wasn't prepared for this! I ran for 30 years, which could have contributed to this problem, but now I'm wondering if I will ever walk pain-free again?!

Spinal Surgery :: Foot Nerve Pain

After a L5-S1 in October, I am left with residual left foot and partial leg nerve pain. In addition to numbness, my leg aches. My MRI looks clean, but neurosurgeon referred me to neurologist for possible nerve root injections. He also suspects the it may be radial sympathetic nerve issue. If nothing else, he's willing to take hardware out to see if that helps. I keep falling with my left foot so "numb," so I am frustrated. Is the device that scrambles pain.  (can't think of it now) good for nerve pain? (Pain extends to my left lower back.) Has anyone had nerve blocks for nerve pain?  I wouldn't have had surgery if I had known my mobility would have been compromised so much.
