Uterine Fibroids :: 9 Months On Esmya And Myomectomy Surgery

Sep 18, 2014

There are lots of discussions on here as to whether esmya tablets work. I took them for 9 months, and my fibroid reduced by 30%. I guess they may not work for everyone. I did have a monthly scan at the hospital, where the consultant measured the size. The biggest reduction was at the 6 week stage.

I did also have a think uterus and it appears the tablets also helped thin the lining of this too.

After 9 months, I must admit I was getting a bit disheartened as it didn't appear to be shrinking, and the consultant wanted me to take them for 12 months. I was referred for embolisation, however after meeting the surgeon, he said that myomectomy would also be an option for me, to remove the fibroid completely, as there would be no guarantee that embolisation would work for me, as it was unclear if I had more than 1 fibroid at the time. He gave me me a choice, and I opted for myomectomy, so glad I did.

I had a myomectomy, on 4th July, I date that I will always remember. Whilst operating they also found that I had a form of endometriosis, adenomyosis, so removed that too.

I am now nearly 11 weeks post op, still recovering at home. My surgeon said that I did have major surgery (not as straight forward as hysterectomy) I am able to walk about, still not doing any lifting, but I do still experience pains. They said that as long as I don't bleed, no discharge or swelling then it will just take time, however nobody seems to know how long.

I did rejoin slimming world after my op, and have continued to eat healthy, and my stomach is getting a lot flatter. I just thought I was putting a bit of weight on, getting a stomach, I am 43, old age etc, but have gone from 16/18, and now down to nearly size 14.

Uterine Fibroids :: Esmya For 3 Months To Shrink Fibroids

I have not yet had my pre-op as the hospital seem to be slack, I wondered how long after taking esmya do the fibroids start to grow back? If they do? How long after finishing the 3 months course did people have to wait for there op? My period stopped while taking them, will it start again and will it be as heavy as before? My op is just to remove the 2 large fibroids that i have, as i would like to have another child. I am 42, so with time not on my side, you can see why I am getting impatient with the hospital!

Uterine Fibroids :: Taking Esmya For More Than 3 Months

I have been on Esmya for 2 months.  There are quite a lot of minor side effects, but I can cope with this.  My fibroids are quite big (about size of 5 months plus pregnant).  I have noticed a very small change only, maybe a little flatter, so far.  For those of you who have taken a full 3 months, when did you notice the most change.  Also is there anyone who has taken a 2nd 3 months and did that produce any further improvement.

Uterine Fibroids :: Esmya Vs Surgery

For anyone who has to undergo surgery for uterine fibroids...i am the biggest wimp i know and I had my surgery on the 18th Aug 15 & I'm already very mobile ( bout the house & short walks) hasn't even been 2 weeks. Its not all roses mind , I don't know if I could have any long term problems from taking esmya for so long when you're clearly not supposed to. I , like many others , dreaded the surgery & having to be cut not to mention having a catheter on when I woke up ..so gross , but i' ve survived . What have I been left with? I still have my ovaries, I have some numbness up my right leg & just above my incision , also I visited my gp who said I have been left with a lump of dried blood inside that should disintegrate with time. If I could offer any advice at all stay focused on why you need it , try to keep active & a stable weight leading up to surgery & listen to all the do's & don'ts , if prescribed codeine do take a prescribed laxative with it ...really coz wow ... Hope this is helpful

Uterine Fibroids :: Esmya (3 Months) Completed - How Long Before First Period?

Uterine Fibroids :: Open Myomectomy Surgery - Wonderful Experience

It is 10 days now since I had Open Myomectomy surgery. 32 Fibroids were removed, which surprised me, and I was in hospital for 5 nights. I am now home and getting stronger each day. The days before the surgery were anxious days but at the same time I was looking forward to the sugery and being free from the many symptons that fibroids cause. I had a great surgeon and anathestist and went fully prepared mentally, physically and spiritually for the surgery.

Surgery took 2 hours and remember being brought back to my hospital bed hooked up to IV fluids, catheter, oxygen and equipment on my legs to stop blood clots. Pain was minimal, similar to mild period pain and I was encouraged to use the Morphine pump to manage the pain for 2 days. Morphine did make me feel nauseated which is common.  Once I was free from catheter and IVs on day 3 I was encouraged to do my Pelvic exercises and to walk around the hospital corridor. I was given paracetamol and ibuprophen at regular intervals and BP, tempearture and Pulse was moniored on a regular basis, which were all fine. I was encouraged to drink more fluids and had no issues with empyting my bladder or bowels so knew everything was working OK. Getting in and out of bed and sitting up was difficult during the first 5 days but  became easier each day. Its amazing how much we rely on our stomach muscles for so many things. Once I was home on Day 6 I started doing very light duties around the house and a 10 minute walk outside plus regular naps whenever I felt fatigue. I can now do 15 minute walks and looking forward to getting stronger each day. I have some swelling around the incision but that is normal at this stage.  Will see the surgeon 20 days after my surgery for post-op checks.

Overall my surgery went very well and I am very pleased with the progress I am making. Although Open Myomectomy is major surgery, becasue of the advance in technology, the skills of the surgeon and the excellent pain management and hospital care  it is  a much easier experience than I thouht it would be.

If you have been told by your consultant that you need Open Myomectomy surgery do not be afraid, focus on the positive aspects of being free of fibroids symptons, read up on the procedure, watch videos of the procedure if your that way inclined, understand the risks, prepare yourself physically and mentally and follow the advice given by your consultant on the aftercare.

I am grateful to God that my surgery went well and I am looking forward to getting back to the gym in dure course and having a better quality of life without fibroids.

Uterine Fibroids :: Intermittent Use Of Esmya For Fibroids

Has anyone had any reduction in fibroid symptoms after taking esmya for a second course of three months. I have finished a first three month course and still have some pelvic pain. I wondered if it is possible to obtain an improvement with the second course of 3 months if not gained much in the first three months. There will be a 2 month gap in between as advised by the Dr. (They can be used intermittently now and not just prior to surgery).

Uterine Fibroids :: Norethisterone Vs. Esmya

I'm 25 and have 3 uterine fibroids ranging from 4-6 cm in size. Due to extremely heavy bleeding which made me anemic I was put on norethisterone to stop the bleeding until I saw my consultant. She prescribed me esmya which I shall take before I have a myectomy. I was wondering if i do have to wait until I start bleeding again before I take esmya or whether I can swap from the Norethisterone to the esmya straight away?

Uterine Fibroids :: Esmya Experiences - Anyone?

I went to a gyno last week to discuss treatment for my 5x7 intramural fibroid which causes me heavy bleeding and sometimes a pressure towards my tailbone.

I was curious about having a embolization but my gyno thought that Esmya would be better for me to start with.

I have so many questions that the gyno couldn't answer (!) so I hope that you who have been on Esmya would like to share your experiences and can help me answer some of them. I am mostly scared of side effects, if it will affect my work, libido etc.

The questions I have for you are the following:

After finishing 3 months on Esmya, how was the bleeding? Was it much lighter after that?

How much did your fibroid/fibroids shrink?

What side effects did you have? Were they transient?

Has anyone been on them for longer than 3 months? If so, did the fibroid continue to shrink?

Will the fibroid stay small and bleeding continue to be less after I finish Esmya? Is it worth taking?

Is it safe? Would you recommend it?

I might add that I'm just turning 40, have to kids and want to avoid having a hysterectomy.

Uterine Fibroids :: Esmya Prescribed?

My consultant has prescribed Esmya today and I had to give the prescription to my GP so waiting to see if she agrees it tomorrow.  In fact I am sure she will but has anyone had issues with their GP not agreeing?

Also I noticed that most of the women in this forum are taking Esmya in preparation for a hysterectomy.  Is there anyone else like me who does not want a hysterectomy and is just taking Esmya to shrink fibroids only?  Well I am sure my GP will agree to process the prescription.

Uterine Fibroids :: Esmya Caused More Bleeding

Having had heavy bleeding for 6 months from fibroids, with mirena coil unsuccessful,I started Esmya couple of days ago. However, despite also still being on tranexamic acid, my bleeding is now worse than ever with lots of lower abdominal pain. Can esmya make symptoms worse before they get better? Also, possible option for future treatment is ablation. Has anyone had this done or can tell me how bleeding is after this?

Uterine Fibroids :: Endometrial Ablation - Esmya

Hi All - I had a Polyp removed in March where they discovered I had a 12 cm Fibroid - I had an Endometrial Ablation to remove the fibroid and I went for the option of keeping my fertility, this Op was at the beginning of July, since this time I have had only 4 days where I haven't bled. I have just had my 3 month check up with the consultant and he has suggested that the Fibroid is growing back and to start taking ESMYA saying that this will reduce the fibroid and will stop bleeding.

I believe that this is a stop gap with the intention that I will take the tablets for 3 months but once the bleeding starts again I will probably have to have a full Endometrial Ablation.

Has anyone else had an Endometrial Ablation with similar effects and has ESMYA stopped the bleeding? AS you can imagine bleeding for over 3 months solid has become somewhat frustrating.

Uterine Fibroids :: Esmya Treatment And Wish To Have Children

I'm 29 years old and I have a few relatively small fibroids. The biggest one is 4 cm and the other 6 fibroids are about 2 or 1 cm.

I actually didn't have any idea of what was growing in my belly. I only had bad pains during my period but no other symptoms. So last year in October, I did the yearly examination and it was then when the doctor discovered them.

My husband and I want to have children an the fibroids might be getting in the way. So I started with the Esmya treatment, in hopes that the fibroids will get smaller, so I can get pregnant soon.

Does anyone here is in a similar situation? What is the treatment that your doctor gave you?

Uterine Fibroids :: Esmya Side Effects

I am 39 and recently had a hysteroscopy to remove a fibroid that was causing heavy bleeding and blood clots. I have other smaller fibroids (17mm) which were not removed but I took a 3 month esmya course which gave me all sorts of side effects like tiredness, body ache and vaginal discharge. There is such little information available on esmya and I want to know what are the side effects once you stop esmya. It's been 11 days since my course ended and while my period hasn't returned today I had vaginal l discharge which was bloody. Is this normal? Any experience anyone can share?

Uterine Fibroids :: Shrunk With Esmya AND Coil?

Before I started Esmya I had to come off norethisterone. Fearing a large withdrawal bleed and hoping to avoid another hospital admission, my consultant put the coil in a month before. My period was heavy but OK but unfortunately the coil came out.

This may be a good thing in that I've read you shouldn't have a coil in while on ESMYA as they both compete for receptor sites. Makes sense but when I mentioned this to my consultant he said that the coil deals only with the womb (preventing uterine lining building up) and ESMYA deals with everywhere else. He is the professional and I should trust his judgement but it contradicts what I've read in different sources. Just wondering what you think of this?

My issue is that he hadn't anticipated the coil coming out and he has said that I can either "wait and see" (what period will be like after Esmya) or he could put the coil back in as "belt and braces".

I just don't know what to do. I'm terrified of haemorrhaging again in that period after ESMYA and so the coil would help limit that. However I really want to give the ESMYA the best chance of working and I don't think that will happen with coil in situ. Unless, are there any ladies out there who have had fibroid shrinkage with Esmya and the coil in? If so, I would dearly love to hear from you.

And in general, if you don't mind sharing I would love to hear what people's experiences have been like with that period after first course ie. Heavier or lighter than usual, how many days after stopping ESMYA ..

Uterine Fibroids :: My Myomectomy Experience

So I had my myomectomy last weds evening. I was nervous as hell and cried in whilst the anesthetist was tending to me. They gave me an epidural to make me more comfortable and which meant I would need less 'hard' drugs after surgery lol as they didn't want me to take too much morphine Etc.

When I came round they told me my consultant had removed 13 fibroids. I had 14 so I was immediately in my drunken state questioning them as to what she had done with number 14 turns out she left maybe 1-1.5 behind as they were small and she didn't want to risk damaging my uterus.

The next day I felt surprisingly good and wasn't really in any discomfort. I found out this was cos of the epi. I was itching though which is a side effect.

I had some off days generally with trapped wind and a feeling that my tummy was very very tight and being pulled in all directions which wasn't pleasant but it's now day seven after surgery and I'm managing to control the pain with just paracetamol. I refused ibuprofen two days ago as they were giving me gastric pain.

I can't get comfortable that much in bed as my back hurts quite a bit which might be a side effect of the epidural not sure but all in all I'm not too bad. My consultant has been amazing. She was coming to see me most nights in hospital even around 10pm to check on me. She is pleased with all and how it looks and I'm finally back home since last night and am to go back to her in 5 weeks. They told me its a very slowly healing process and I had a BIG op but slowly slowly I'll get there

Uterine Fibroids :: Hysteroscopic Myomectomy?

Has anyone had a Hysteroscopic Myomectomy? And what were the results. I have a fibroid that's 4.5cm within my uterus. My problem is I am constantly bleeding and the gyno surgeon suggested myomectomy. He said laparoscopic surgery may not be successful and open abdominal would be the likely option. I did some research and discovered this other non invasive option as I want to have kids so I really only have myomectomy option. The surgeon never suggested Hysteroscopic Myomectomy as another option.....
