Jan 3, 2016

As well as severe muscle pain, STATINS are to blame for lowering the mood and causing depression. Why are the nation being prescribed them?

I was diagnosed homozygous C282Y in 2001 and have managed my HH successfully since with therapeutic venesection as a regular blood donation. I have to take statins after a recent heart attack and I'm concerned about their detrimental affect on my liver. Does anyone have experience and advice on this issue, please?

Lipid Lowering :: Risk Calculators - Do I Really Need Statins?

I am a healthy 49 yrs. old man and usually very active. I do not take any medicines besides Ramipril (Tritace) due to my high blood pressure. Unfortunately for many years I have rather high cholesterol level – 6.1 mmol/l total, 1.2 HDL and my doctor wants to put me on statins.

I am not a physician, but I have been working with information for many years so I did my homework and now I am absolutely confused!

The fact is that I have used many online cardiovascular risk calculators and I found a few rather odd things:

1. I have a probability of developing cardiovascular disease in next 10 years between 8.0 and 10 % despite my with high level of cholesterol. I can not explain this!

2. I was playing with the risk calculators putting different numbers and I have found, that even extremely high cholesterol level like 7 mmol/l just slightly increases the overall risk to 11% in next 10 years I can not explain this!

3. The most interesting thing is that even if I would manage to reduce my cholesterol numbers with statins to recommend level, my cardiovascular risk reduce very slightly!

So I have to take statins during very long period of time just in order to reduce the risk up to 7-8% instead of 8-11! Could you help me to understand where I am wrong?

Lipid Lowering :: Reasons Behind Refusing Statins?

I am trying to do a bit of research behind why is it difficult to keep patients on a prescription of a statin drug.

I am aware of all the side-effects caused by the statins, but i would like to know the reasoning behind the choice to come off your prescribed statin or to try and change drug;

Is this because you feel your quality of life is lowered on a statin.

Is it lack of evidence behind the efficacy of a statin to lower cholesterol etc?

I am trying to find out if there is anything that could be done to convince patients to continue on their prescription of statins, or whether they would prefer to be offered an alternative medication.

Statins / Lipid Lowering :: Adversely Affecting Sex Life?

Just been prescribed Simvastatin 40mg for my cholesterol (which is 5.1). I also have raised BP and recently diagnosed diabetic; although neither is high and I am not overweight.

My question is: I am 60 with a 45 year old partner. We have a very active sex life and I am paranoid that if I start taking the Simvastatin it will ruin that part of our life.

Does any Simvastatin user have experience of it adversely affecting their sex life.

all over my body started to itch like crazy. Worst if I take a little alcohol. I stopped taking it for about 2 weeks but it still is terribly itch on my hands, arms legs body and buttocks. I keep on scratching but no relief. I took some allergy meds (benadryl, claritin, prednisone 20 mg) it helped some but not much. What can I do to stop the itch. I took that because I have high cholesterol but not too overly high

On bad days my total cholesterol is 144

Triglyceride 223 > I eat a lot after Christmas (I can get like 120-140 sometimes)

HDL  35 > after Christmas (I can get 52-63)

LDL 64 >

Glucose 106

What can I do to make the itch go away. There are no blisters or anything. I am quite active, going to gym about 5 days a week for 2 hrs each. slim profile. 64kg on a 168 height. mid 40s. advise?

Statins / Lipid Lowering :: Treatment With Ezetrol Is It Safe?

I have taken Ezetrol for approximately 7 years having had considerable problems with statins and leg pain. 3 years ago I began to have sensations of heat and nerve pain in my legs . I was , a year later, sent to a neurologist but no determination of the cause was found. I also had a Doppler to assess the circulation, sent to a cardiologist who said it was normal. I thought the point of me seeing him was that the results were abnormal and were certainly very different from an earlier one at the time of the statins saga.I am now suffering pain in legs and the area of liver and a general malaise with some dizziness. This week I am to have a blood test to assess the liver function. I was never ill until the word Cholesterol came into my life and I have never been well since. There is plenty of information as time passes from Drs and other health care professionals who now seem prepared to stand and say that Cholesterol, statins and ezetimibe are not as they have been described to us. Cholesterol is necessary and statins and ezetimibe are questionable treatments.

Statins / Lipid Lowering :: Side Effects - Muscle Pains (ezetrol)

i have been taken ezetrol for a long time now and have complained about muscle pains especially in my legs and as a runner it has restricted the amount of exercise i can do. I have had blood test and the enzymes seem to be ok. I have stopped taking them and the symptoms get better and i can run for longer but have restarted taking them. Also i have been told and am in the process of trying it out that the most effective amount to take is the first 10-20 mg after that the reduction is very limited and is not worth taking any higher dose. I was on 40mg and level was 4.6 am now on 20mg and level is 4.9 but the side effects have got slightly better. Overall i feel that these drugs have had a detrimental effect on my fitness

Statins :: Depression And Lethargy

I had a TIA back in February which was terrifying.

I have been prescribed 20 mg Simvastatin daily but feel dreadful.

I am also taking an SSRI drug for anxiety & am currently unemployed so is this just depression due to circumstances or the drug?

I have been taking the statin for just over two months and am becoming increasingly lethargic, aching all over, headaches and a feeling of just wanting to go to sleep for ever..almost like I have not the energy to care anymore which is an irony as faced with the prospect of dying 2 months ago I was terrified now I don't care. My cholesterol was 5.9 which is not exactly high but in the circumstance I was advised to get it lower with meds. Is anyone else in a similar position?

Depression :: Quetiapine Worsen Your Mood?

I've been on Quetiapine for the last two weeks (as a 'booster' to the antidepressant that I'm on).  At first I felt better, however this may have been my antidepressant kicking in, but now I feel much worse.  Can Quetiapine worsen your mood?  I take 50mg twice a day.

Tramadol Withdrawal :: Severe Mood Swings, Depression, Insomnia, RLS

I suffer with Rheumatoid Arthritis and so have been on all sorts of painkillers and medicines, opiate based seem to be the only ones that genuinely work. I have struggled with addiction until finally learning my tolerances and tapering etc. etc. so I can take them safely without doing myself in.

I tried Tramadol, they stopped me sleeping and effected my mood. I am also on an SSRI, they interacted and caused weird symptoms so I have stopped them and gone back to Dihydrocodeine so physical symptoms are pretty mild.

I am however suffering severe mood swings still; depression, insomnia, RLS, muscle pain...

It has been exactly a week, does anyone know how long these issues might last? As I am struggling at the moment, struggling to keep up with work and responsibilities. I know it will end, I am positive about this, just looking for a time frame!

Mirtazapine :: Causing Depression After 6 Months

I've been on mirtazapine for about 6months now. 3 months at 30 mg and 3 months at 45 mg. I was put on it due to generalised anxiety and mild depression from a buildup of stresses in my life. It hasn't been plain sailing and to be honest the only thing mirtazapine has done is help me sleep. My anxiety is much reduced compared to before I went on, but I genuinely feel like I'm only as good as I am because I've done it myself with life changes etc. I've just gone back to work and it's really good for me socially. 6 months into mirtazapine and I'm starting to become upset by the constant feeling of numbness, miserable mood, irritability, and the weight gain is starting to make me miserable. I can deal with a bit of weight, as i was skinny anyway, but like all my work clothes I purchased a month ago are all now too small. It's becoming upsetting and I can feel the anxiety creeping back in. I feel like the fact the mirtazapine is making me feel miserable and low, is setting off my anxiety again, and I am wondering if anyone else has in fact felt better after stopping mirtazapine? I have a docs appointment to discuss coming off in a few weeks.

Mirtazapine - Causing More Depression - Weight Gain

I was diagnosed with depression just before christmas, I had quite a traumatic year with a series of bad events occurring, I was also getting married which I think was the only thing keeping me going, looking back now I realise I was slipping into a depressive state for about 2 months before I finally broke. I fell into quite a catatonic state being unable to function at even a basic level, it was as if my brain had just shut down.

The doc started me on sertraline but this made my anxiety so bad that I couldn't even go into my back garden, unable to leave the house or speak to anyone for a month, he then gave me citalopram, this reduced my anxiety but gave me insomnia, so I spent another month sleeping (or rather not sleeping) on my sofa and only getting a few hours of sleep here and there.

So my doc decided to try mirtazapine, my depression has reduced dramatically but I've have gained a lot of weight, which at first I thought was a welcome side effect compared to anxiety and insomnia but now this is really starting to lower my mood again,

When I was at the beginning of my illness and was unable to function, eating didn't even enter my head and I lost around a stone and a half (my usual weight sticks around 10 - 10 1/2 stone) to 9 stone, I looked really unwell at this weight, but since being on mirtazapine I have gained 2 1/2 stone in the first month (I'm into my second month now) and it's just staying there. I have tried changing my diet and exercising but I'm stuck at nearly 12 stone.

I look overweight, none of my clothes fit me and the worse part is that I look 6 months pregnant and because I am only just venturing out again after months of solitude, a lot of people think that I am pregnant and that's why they haven't seen me, I'm struggling to keep my smile and tell people I'm not as I am infertile and this has been one of the issues that led to my depression in the first place.

Contraception :: Cerazette And Low Mood/mood Changes

I had the mirena coil removed at the beginning of January this year due to bad side effects and I decided to go straight back on Cerazette which previously worked really well for me. However, whether I should have or not, I've stopped taking it. I found that it was causing me to get upset over the smallest of things and just generally feel really down quite often. Has anyone else experienced this?

I was also bleeding quite heavily every other week and I have just been bleeding constantly for nearly 3 weeks so that's another reason why I've stopped. I was also experiencing quite a few of the common side effects.

So has anyone else experienced low mood/mood changes on Cerazette before? As I don't know what to do if it doesn't resolve.

Omeprazole :: Causing Rash - Lapromazole Causing Diarrhoea

I have a horrendous rash on my feet, upper arms, back and hands. I have been taking Omeprazole for about 6 weeks, and am due to see a consultant in a few days. As no one had mentioned a rash to me, I assumed it was a heat rash, as I have a habit of warming my feet by the fire, but the rash has got much worse, and now I have ENORMOUS blisters on my big toes and small ones elsewhere on my feet and hands. I have phoned the GP surgery as I see this is listed as a possible side effect, and was told to stop taking the omeprazole which I did yesterday. So far there is no improvement, but it is only 24 hours, so I am hoping there will be some improvement very soon. I have also lost my sense of taste and smell which may be due to a bad cold, but I have a very dry mouth and a horrid taste in it when I wake up in the morning. This is also a listed side effect. The doctor I spoke to seemed to think the rash IS due to the omeprazole. Incidentally, I took lapromazole for 2 weeks previously, but it gave me dreadful diarrhoea, so the consultant changed me to omeprazole. I will post another message on here when I have seen the consultant.
