as the title says, my 2010 accent is at 81,000KM and i hear a ticking sound? is it the timing belt? when driving i dont hear any ticking but once stopped or idling i hear ticking and it never stops til i accelerate.
If it is timing belt, does this mean time for replacement? or what could it be?
Had this happen to me a few times now. Driving down the highway (120kph) in 5th, revving around 3,000 or so and whenever I hit a hill and come onto the gas pedal, I hear a ticking sound coming from up front. The harder I press on the gas - the louder it gets and vice versa.
Only happens in 5th and only under load. Scanned for codes - nothing, looked under the hood - looks normal. Timing belt was done around 56,000km, car has about 67,000km now and is in fantastic shape otherwise.
Spark plugs are still original and I have a new set waiting to go in, drive belts were replaced back in the spring but the tension is correct and all pulleys were checked okay at the time.
I might buy a 2013 Accent tomorrow, but the only big question remaining is the ticking sound coming from the engine when I pop the hood.
When I hear ticking I think of valve issues, but is a ticking sound totally normal for that engine? Is it okay or should I be worried?
My engine has been making a ticking sound when it starts and when i hit the gas the ticking sounds stays there but go faster depending on my rpms and before it would go away after the engine got warm but now its here to stay. What it could it i feel like sound is hitting against the acceleration cable.

Recently, we noticed a ticking sound coming from under the hood (the rate of "ticking" was proportional to the engine speed). We took the vehicle in to the local Hyundai dealership and didn't hear anything from them until 6 hours later. The news was interesting; they were going to perform a full engine replacement after consulting with Hyundai Canada. In my experience, a resolution of this large of a magnitude usually takes weeks of kicking and screaming for any large corporation to comply, however it seems like a pretty hasty conclusion, indicating to me that Hyundai might be already aware of such an issue...
So here is my question. We requested photos from the dealership, and they were able to send two pictures of one of the camshafts (not sure if it's the intake or exhaust cams), but the only thing that I could notice was some slight abrasion/wear; certainly not enough for me to ever come to the conclusion that a full engine swap was necessary. I've attached the pictures.
MY Ls460 2010 AWD is making annoying ticking noise since I bought it 2 months ago ( 76k milage ) , it seems that the sound is mainly coming under the hood on right front fender side .
View 6 RepliesI have an 2012 Accent that is sitting at 35k miles. I just got the 30,000 service done and a few days after I started to hear this ticking sound along with a squeak. The car can be idle or moving, squeak still there. It's sporadic though. Sometimes I can go 20-30 miles without hearing it and then all of a sudden I start hearing the ticking squeak. It sounds like its coming below the front passenger side of the car. It doesn't matter how fast I'm going, it's a ticking squeak that just comes and goes, but when it comes, it usually sticks around until I turn the car off and let it cool down. If i start the car right after, the squeaking comes back, but if I let the car cool down (overnight, for example), the squeak goes away until I drive 20-30 miles. I commute to work about 40 miles each way (80 miles total) every day so I can definitely hear it and it's bothersome.
View 5 RepliesAlright so my car is up to 112k miles, other than oil change, a battery,tires, and a new ignition (tumblers fell apart somehow) its had zero maintenance really done to it. Which I know, this means its long over due for things like spark plugs, timing belt, and other mic. stuff. Its almost all highway miles, and really has no problems. I haven't put much into it because it hardly gets driven in the summer since I ride my motorcycle. The only issue is that Indiana has had a lot of rain this year so ive been driving it more.
The Problem- for months now its made a light ticking sound on start-up for about 30 seconds, and it fades away. If I rev the engine the sound gets faster, but still takes time to go away. As of Recently, the sound has gotten louder for about the first 10 seconds, and I'm worried it may become a serious issue and leave me stranded because I drive about an hour one way to work every day. So before I start throwing parts at it, where should I start?
Timing belt?
Valve Adjustment? (not sure how to do this but I'm sure there is a guide)
Plugs?
No I'm not running a FRAM Filter, its a Mobile 1, with full synthetic oil changed about every 6-7k miles. I plan to do the belt and spark plugs as soon as I get some consistent time off, but that may not be until it gets cold again.
2008 Accent. Timing belt broke. Took the head off and had valves replaced (2) and head work done. Had everything put back together. Car runs. Except it makes a slight ticking sound when warm. When it's cold it ticks a lot.
View 5 RepliesI bought a 2005 Hyundai Accent about 5-6 months ago, GS 2 Dr model, 52,000kms (69,000 on her now), and lately she has been making a weird ticking sound form the engine when idle, if you give her some gas it slowly goes away as your RPMS increase. I had my father look at it, he said it seems fine, i also had a garage look at it and they also said its fine, but too me the engine sounds different then it did when i got it, maybe the cold from the winter could be doing this? when the engine is heated up it still makes the noise.
View 4 RepliesCame off the highway just now and there's a tapping sound coming from the engine. It's louder than the ticking these engines make so believe me it's nothing I've heard before. No codes, no overheating and doesn't seem to be anything else wrong. I am due for an oil change soon and I'm wondering if that could be it?
The engine wasn't cold obviously. I did shut off the car and then back on and it still did it. Just want to make sure my engine isn't going to explode anytime soon!
I noticed my sound a few weeks ago but wasn't as loud as the videos I've seen. Didn't really bother me. I did notice today that the sound was a lot louder . The only thing that has changed is i had my oil changed over the weekend with mobil 1 5w-30 fully synthetic. Now I don't know if that could factor into the sound getting louder.
I am really hoping its just a cat and i can replace my headers and everything is good. i just got the car with 19k miles on it and do not have a warranty.
I have been worrying about "engine noises" for years and at this point if its something i can't fix without dumping thousands of dollars into it, then so be it. I am just going to enjoy the car too the fullest. Plus, once i get full exhaust, it will work with canceling out the ticking sound.
My elantra has around 7000 miles on the odometer. I have noticed for a while that after sitting for a few hours or over night the engine has a ticking sound to it. The noise will last for a few minutes then goes away. I figured that the cold weather might have been the cause. Not it is almost summer and the noise is continuing. Im not sure if this is normal for these engines. but any other car i have had has not had an extended tick at startup.
View 7 RepliesI have a 2012 Elantra sedan and I have a ticking noise coming from the engine.......I have had the noise since new.......but it was very faint.......it has gotten worse with time........I had mentioned this to the dealership when it was new but they said it was normal engine noise! It sounds like the older cars used to sound when there was a valve clearance problem.....but with the advent of overhead cams.....I'm not sure what the problem is.........78,000km on engine!
View 8 RepliesToday was the first time I was in my RX without the radio since I bought it. I have a 2011 RX CPO with 65000kms on the odometer.
When the vehicle is idling there is a tick-tick noise coming from the engine area that does not go away. I initially thought this noise was due to it being 0 Degree C but the noise continued for the duration of my 45 minute drive. Later in the day the noise was consistent was did not silence.
I constantly hear 'tick, tick, tick' sound from the engine at start. Once the engine gets heat up, the sound disappears. I live in canada so it is still kinda cold in the morning. I didn't have this problem in the summer. the problem started in december when it gets really cold in canada. so i thought it might be an engine oil problem. I called the dealer to ask what kind of engine oil they use for my azera, ans they said they just use a regular engine oil with viscosity of 10w-20. However when I check the manual, viscosity of 5w-30 is recommended. I know engine oil with viscosity of 5w-30 is thinner than the one with 10-20w and therefore easy for the engine to get heat up and better protection at start in the winter. What viscosity engine oil do you use for you azera? Will using synthetic engine oil useful??
View 17 RepliesI've had this truck since new and now with 98k miles I just started to hear the dreaded engine ticking. I realize that it is probably the cam phaser's. I have plans to take it to the dealer to get the plugs changed (actually not bad at $225) and now I going to add the ticking noise to the list. How bad will I get killed for two new cam phaser's? Also, since this just started, am I doing any more damage by continuing to drive it? I probably won't be able to take it it for another month.

View 6 RepliesI recently bought a 2006 Hyundai Sonata 3.3 V6. Had another issue related to the rear wheel, which I fixed. Today, I changed the oil filter on the car (along with the oil). I have heard this engine noise before, but with the cover off it appears a little louder. It’s basically a ‘ticking’ sound.
The engine uses no oil, and has no other leaks. It has some noise on startup for maybe 1-2 seconds (like a loud lifter or something, but it goes away in less than 2 seconds, and at the same time the oil light goes out). I changed the filter today because I was told that a leaky gasket could result in the Filter not retaining oil between starts, causes some minor knock for a few seconds.
But anyway, this other ticking noise seems to be regular, regardless of condition. I have heard some people say that some engine noise is normal for this engine, but how about this?
