Camry :: 2002 - Lurch A Bit When Driving

Feb 24, 2014

I have an '02 Camry XLE (1MZ-FE) with around 175k miles on it. I've never done any transmission maintenance on it until recently (I was one of those dopes who believed my mechanic when he told me that the fluid didn't ever need changing).

A couple weeks ago, I started noticing a bit of a lurch when I was driving. It wouldn't ever affect the RPMs or anything and it was only ever an instantaneous thing so I didn't let it bother me too much. About 3 weeks ago it started getting worse and rapidly deteriorated into a problem. The engine started doing it in idle and it would happen numerous times (sometimes, when I'm driving in the city, it happens as many as 3 times a minute or so).

I immediately attributed the problem to the transmission and did 2 drain and fills with a synthetic fluid that's rated to meet Type-IV WS standards. The problem hasn't gone away, so either the problem in the transmission is a lot worse than I'd hoped, or there's something else wrong.

I ran an OBD-II code reader on it and have been getting an O2 sensor code. I was planning on replacing both of the O2 sensors to see if that fixed the problem. I was thinking that the lurch that I was feeling was just engine misfires caused by the O2 sensors sending bad info, leading to the engine running lean (the engine hasn't been overheating).

Either way, I need to put in new O2 sensors, but yesterday while I was driving to work, the engine almost completely stopped supplying power. It kept running, but no matter how hard I pushed the pedal, the vehicle wouldn't move any faster. I pulled over, turned it off, and turned it back on, and it worked again, but the VSC and traction control lights went on.

Does this sound like a transmission problem, or is there something in the ECM that would cause these kind of things now that the O2 sensors have gotten so bad?

Toyota - Camry :: 2002 B6 - Bucking Or Lurch Forward At Low Speeds

Intermittent problem, noticed mostly at low speeds, where car will buck or lurch forward. Most noticeable when accelerating after a slowdown, i.e. applying gas after coasting. No check engine lights, oil & transmission fluid is full. Car has 105K miles, tranny & coolant flushed every 30K, oil changed every 3K, tuneup w/plugs& wires @ approx. 93K, timing belt @ 70k. This car is a gem, mostly driven on the highway that has been perfect until now. Things I've considered doing: replacing timing belt, transmission solenoid, computer sensor that controls tranny. My suspicion is its tranny related but maybe not. Is there a way to check/set the timing on this car? I remember years ago using a timing light on my chevy. This is weird, it will run perfect smooth in the morning and rough with lurching in the afternoon. Could be a total coincidence but it seems to run ok when its cool and not so when it is hotter.

Nissan - Sentra :: 1996 - Lurch After 19 Minutes Of Driving Regardless Of Speed

After driving for about 15 minutes the car starts to lurch. regardless of the speed. it gets worse if and when i accelerate. If i rev up the engine, it feels like a lose in power and also like something in the engine is skipping. I changed fuel filter under the hood and the strainer on the fuel pump (not the fuel pump) thinking they might have been clogged up and the engine wasn't getting enough fuel.

Jeep - Wrangler :: 1988 - Tach Would Drop To Zero And Whole Car Lurch While Driving At Any Speed

I still drive the '88 Wrangler I bought in Oct '87. She has 171,000 miles. Recently I had a rebuilt motor, transmission, etc... installed. I had the existing carb rebuilt. This summer, while driving at any speed, the tach would drop to zero and the whole car would lurch. Sometimes so violently my seatbelt would lock up. After a couple miles of lurching it would backfire several times. This is very scary.

Here's the really bizare issue - now that the weather is cold, the issue has substantially (not completely) diminished. On a warm day in the 50's it will act up again. I live in Watkins Glen, NY. Yes, I'm a (Indy Car) racing fan. What can I do?

Passat (B5) :: 1999 - Stuck In 1st And Then Suddenly With A Lurch Shifting Into 2nd After Few Blocks Of Driving

I posted a few days ago about my 99 Passat Wagon getting stuck in 1st and then suddenly (with a lurch) shifting into second after a few blocks of driving. After three weeks of investigation my mechanic, who is a VW certified mechanic, changed the Transmission Input Speed Sensor Assembly (automatic transmission) but a day later the problem continued.

I've now discovered that when I shake the gear shift between neutral and drive, it jumps into gear. I'm taking it back tomorrow (10-15-07). What is this?

When I called him last week after his repairs didn't work he started talking about replacing the entire transmission which scares the heck out of me. Every other gear seems fine after getting out of first and I really don't want to spend thousands of dollars because his diagnostic won't register the real problem.

Camry :: Little Lurch And Small Jump In Rpms With Heat On

I have a 2003 4 cylinder automatic Camry with around 108,000 miles. The other day, with the heating on, I felt it little lurch as well as a small jump in rpms at times while rolling on idle. This seemed to occur right after a hissing sound stopped after it sounded, pretty quietly, from the rear of the car for a couple seconds. To me it seems like the kind of a lurch I sometimes get when turning off the AC, which makes sense because the AC turning off reduces strain on the engine.

It's definitely not some really bad problem and no lights are on, but something I'm a little worried about nonetheless.

Camry :: 2002 - Hesitates And Stalls After Driving For A While

I have a 2002 Camry LE V6 which I bought a month ago from its original owner. It has 140k miles on it. Timming belt and water pump were changed at 90k, car is in very good shape, clean engine.
It has a weird issue.

In the early morning, from my house to work around 7am, I have to drive around 20 mins on freeway , I exit and drive for another 5 mins on local street which is up and downhill, at red light or when I have to turn, the car begins to hesitate like hiccup and stall on me. The car cannot start again immediately, all power is still working, the car is trying its best to turn over but it fails. However after I wait couple mins, I can restart the car. Then, the car will run just fine, absolutely fine the rest of the day.
The weird thing here is, on days I don't have to work, I start to drive it at around 10am when it's warmer and there's sunshine, and not up and downhill, it never hesitates or stalls. Even I try to drive it up a big hill near my house at noon, nothing happens. So I'm not sure if driving up and downhill playing a part in this problem.

It doesn't happen all the time when I have to drive to work in early morning, up and downhill, but more than often. The car drives great on freeway, idle excellent around 500-600 RPM. One more detail, the gas pedal kind of vibrates (very small vibration) around 1600 RPM, and it's annoying. I'm not sure if it is relating to the issue.

Here what I did to the car:

1. Clean throttle body.

2. Clean Mass Airflow Sensor. Didn't work. Then I replaced it with a used OEM one.

3. Put Techron Additive in the gas tank.

4. Replace Air Filter.

None of the above works, but I think somehow it improves a tiny little bit.

Camry :: 2002 Stalls Out While Driving When Running At Appropriate Temperature

I have a 2002 camry that stalls out while driving. The car stalls when engine is warmed up and the car is running at appropriate temperature. When this occurs no "check engine lights" stay on and the car re-starts after 15-20 minutes and runs just fine. I had the car looked at by a Toyota dealer and another independent shop and they where unable to pull any codes from the computer module. The car is up to schedule with routine maintenance items. The car is garage kept and I go to the same gas station each fill up.

Camry :: 2002 V6 Bucking / Jerking When Driving At A Constant Speed 60 Mph Or Over

I have a 2002 camry with 212000 miles on it and just lately when driving at a constant speed 60 mph or over it starts to buck or jerk a little bit and you can feel it in the seat. I've had the throttle body cleaned and put in a new mass air flow sensor and it hasn't fixed it yet. What might be causing this? It doesn't do it when accelerating or slowing down.

Camry :: 2002 LE - Loud Sound From Engine When Driving For 200 Miles Continuously

I have Camry 2002 LE which has 110000 miles on it. After last winter in Pittsburgh, first time I drove it for 200 miles continuously and all of sudden the engine started making very loud sound after 2-3 hrs drive and I had to pull it off.

When you give more gas, the sound increases even further. It is very load and unbearable. I called AAA and mechanic advised something wrong with engine and I cannot drive it anymore so have to tow it.

The sound is coming from engine and it is very very load. I will take it to mechanic tomorrow but what would have gone wrong. Is it the end of my car life?

Camry :: 2002 V6 - Check Engine Light Came On While Driving On Freeway / Code P0128

I have a 2002 v6 Camry with over 270k on it. Today the Check engine light came on while driving on the freeway. When I got home I used my scan tool and it gave me the following codes.

P0128, P0440, P0446 and P0440, P0441, P0446 pending.

I understand that the 128 has to do with coolant temp and that the other codes are evap system related.

What I'm trying to figure out is what might have caused them to all occur at the same time. I know once with my 98 Camry it threw a P0125 which had to do with coolant temp issues but it also threw several other codes for a bad 02 sensor and the 125 was just a false code (replaced the 02 sensors and they went away). If this 128 is possibly a false code or if I also have a bad thermostat/sensor on top of an evap system issue.

Also. coolant level is good and I checked the gas cap and insured it was on tight, reset the codes and am waiting to see what comes back.

Toyota - Camry :: 2002 - Jerky Motion When Driving On Freeway And Check Engine Light Came On

I have 2002 camry 4 cylinders and has 175,000 miles. I was driving on the freeway and suddenly I felt a jerky motion and check engine light came on. When I stopped at light the car began to vibrate and when started driving at low speeds it got me home. Admittedly I had put lot of hard miles on the car in past 6 months and I was lazy in getting oil changed in time. It might have been 7000 miles since oil chg. I took the car to local oil change place they did not mention anything about engine but they said my transmission oil was dark and burnt. They said I should flush and replace. I agreed and tech said he had to do second flush as oil was still dark. After second flush, he said its little bit better.

I was hoping this would solve my problem but unfortunately no. Car was still vibrating and when i drove at slow speed it was driving but as soon as I tried to accelerate the car lost power. Check engine light has been on since the incident at freeway, but now check oil light and battery sign came on. The power steering lost power. I had to park the car and restarted, as long as I drove very slowly it would drive but if I tried to accelerate where the rpm went from 1 or to next level car would loose power with warning lights on. I had recently replaced fuel pump, filter and any repair which was suggested to me. Admittedly I have not done timing chain or belt.

Grand AM :: Car Lurch Forward, When Coasting To A Stop

When coasting to a stop, I have noticed when the rpms reach 1000-1100 they jump up a little bit. Sometimes you can even feel the car lurch forward just a tiny bit. Is this normal for a car downshifting??

Honda - Accord :: 1997 - Lurch Once In A While Probably Between First And Second Gear

I have a 1997 Honda Accord with 193000 miles... I'm trying to decide if I should sell it, as I'm getting concerned about it's future, especially the transmission (automatic). It seems to lurch once in a while, probably between first and second gear. I could sell it now for several thousand (ABS is out). If I keep driving it and the transmission dies, it's worthless, isn't it?. I don't know if the transmission fluid has ever been changed. When I recently got my oil changed, the mechanic said that he would leave it alone if I don't know if it's been changed before. Change the transmission fluid?

Golf VI R :: Lurch During Slow Highway Cruising?

Experience a lurch during slowish highway cruising? If I am just putting along with my foot barely on the gas sometimes the car will give a jerk or a lurch like it's trying to decide whether or not to go fast or stall. Just a really quick bit of feeback that makes me think...what was that? Here are some common elements:

-Only happens when cruising at relatively gentle speeds (100km/hr or 55mph)
-Seems to happen more often if it's windy? Has happened a few times when passing by semi trailers
-Seems to happen more frequently when there is snow on the road or blowing snow?

Could it be some sort of sensor or air filter problem? No codes have been thrown.

Prius (2010-12) :: Sudden Lurch Of Power When Engine Is On

I've notice this several times when leaving from work to go home. The first quarter mile I will be starting off nice and easy, the engine is on and then suddenly a lurch of power. Now its not giving me a wipe lash! But I can defiantly feel it and out of the corner of my eye can see my passenger's head move back slightly. So not so subtle either. It will only happen once.

It is not going from battery to gas as I mentioned engine is already on. I am in eco mode the whole time. I am not hitting the gas any harder. And I am not going into the power band all the way right of the bar. I am staying steady in the eco area.

Prius (2010-12) :: Lurch Forward And Shudder On Shutting Down

Twice today with cooling temps (45 during the day, closer to 30s on way home) while shutting down after being put in park my Prius did the "lurch forward and shudder." This is something new! Fuel has been purchased consistently from the same Shell station, she's garaged at night and MPGs are averaging 45... OK but nowhere near my great warm weather mileage. We are at close to 2200 on the odometer if my memory is working right - 2012 4 version. Happened once at the bank after work, once in the garage, level ground.

Not sure what is going on... this is new to me with a new car....

Sonata NF (2006-10) :: Rough Idle / Sputter And Lurch In Gear Only

2006 Sonata V6 with 98K miles. The car has developed a rough idle, sputter/lurch while in gear, but not park or neutral. No CEL/codes. Have already replaced the spark plugs (OE), throttle body/FI cleaned, MAF cleaned, new air filter, coil packs OK... Mechanic said no vac leaks, FI spray pattern good, good fuel pressure, etc. Vibration dampener looks ok, no separation or wobble. Another post mentioned a power steering pressure sensor, which I will have checked, but the mechanic is at a loss.
