I suspect I have a turbo seal leak. My 2004 E350 6.0 smokes like crazy. The smoke is white and smells like you poured raw oil on a hot manifold. Definitely not diesel smoke. How can I tell if it's my turbo without tearing it out?
View 14 RepliesI have an '03 powerstroke 6.0, 4 inch turbo back exhaust. truck had lost boost and would cut in and out if i got on pedal and now a little bit of oil is collecting at tip, could this be because of bad turbo seals? And could the turbo still be alright? Another thing, I'm losing coolant, and I have noticed when I took the EGR out and cleaned it, the valve itself was the powdery black carbon, the cooler was wet, and I know it's not supposed to be like that. I am not thinking head gaskets yet, cause if it had a blown head gasket, I wouldn't be able to drive it. It is currently sitting, and I'm just trying to fix it. Would I be able to fix the turbo seals myself?
View 4 RepliesRecently had a rear pinion leak and replaced the seal and nut. I jacked up the truck, took off wheels and felt the drag so I could duplicate once i had the new seal as I tightened the nut. I've done this only once before on my F150 years ago, but when I put the driveshaft back on and test drove it, i had shudder when not under load. So when I let off of the accelerator, it had shudder and more the faster I was going.
Obviously thinking this is a preload issue with the rear axle but would this be caused by tightening too much or too little. I had no issues before so I would think that the driveshaft itself is not the issue. I can't confirm that I got it bolted up in the exact same manner as before in relation to the flanges but still wouldn't think that to be the issue.
I have a small oil leak that is showing up under my turbo compressor housing. It's starting to show a little in the valley. Not a big leak, just not sure were the source is and would like you opinions and recommendations. I have been cleaning it up every few days, drive it then use a mirror and rag to try and locate the source.
Here are some pics, I hope I took some that are good enough. Unfortunately I cleaned up the oil before the pics, but I circled and marked the location.
Concerned about the turbo, but I don't understand this leak since it's not coming from the center section. The turbo drain pipe is new and it does not seem to be coming from there. The leak is not enough to show a change on the dipstick the last 3-4,000 miles as far as I can tell.
no change, changed stand pipe and dummy plug on driver side, no change and guess what? Now I am stuck on the side of the road waiting to give my last $100 to a tow truck! Engine is hydrolocked, fuel pressure is low, starts off at around 20 and works up to 54 with key on engine off, and that is as much as I know from the side of the road with out my AE. Blew white smoke also. Smelled of unburnt diesel. I think it's linked to my rough running issue. Maybe a bad injector? But every time I did the click test they all passed. Idk, I'm gonna remove the glow plugs and see which hole is loaded and with what. . .
View 14 RepliesI've been getting some grayish/blueish smoke on cold starts lately and decided to do some investigation to see if there was a problem or just the cold temps.
I googled it and turbo oil seal problem was pretty common so I figured it was easiest to start there. I removed the pipe between turbo and CAC and it had quite a bit of oil it in. The pipe after the CAC had a fair amount as well. I checked the oil level in the engine and it was slightly down but I can't say how accurate the dipstick is nor it was completely full after the last oil change. Either way, not much oil is entering the intake but I would assume any is too much.
Here's my main concern - What's the likelihood of getting a runaway from this?? Is it possible for the oil seal to fail 'more' than it already has putting more oil in the intake allowing for a runaway condition?
Obviously the turbo needs replaced but is it safe to run it the way it is until it completely fails or replace immediately?
Ok, finally smelled the smoke and its fuel. Now, it only smokes when idling and in drive! If I put it in park it don't smoke! What in the world is going on?
View 11 RepliesI just picked up a 2006 F250 6.0. It was having hard starts. Anyways before I started using it I started tearing things apart cause I knew for sure the turbo was leaking so that had to be resealed. I just picked up a 2003 turbo today for it out of a used truck that had 144000 kms on it. (was in an accident). I am gonna post up a few pics here of the engine bay area, there is a huge amount of old oil I believe to be, I am wondering if it was a leak or spilled oil. I am going to be cleaning this up. Putting 03 turbo in here, doing a service and then plug my Tablet with torque pro and post up some numbers and see how healthy she is. Before I post any pics Is there a way to make these pictures clickable instead of them taking room up on the page?
View 14 RepliesI am fairly new to working on diesel engines. I was towing a camp trailer and got a P0299, Turbo Charger Underboost engine code. I never gotten any other codes other than this one when towing. I decided to pull the turbo and clean the vanes. Everything seemed to go back together good but now I hear what sounds like an air leak coming from the turbo area. The boots on the intercooler pipe are in good shape, I only loosened the clamps at the intercooler and the turbo. Left the boots on the pipe. I have tightened the clamps around the exhaust pipe connections with no change. I also seem to get a slower response from the turbo and possibly not as much psi as normal (according to dashboard gauge). I have driven the truck five or ten miles trying to work the turbo and have not gotten any engine codes to this point.
View 7 RepliesSo I started my truck this morning and it sounds like air rushing out from the driver side of the engine. I currently have my ICP unplugged due to a bad sensor, will be replacing it on Sat. Also I have been having an issue with my turbo but I don't think that it's related as I here the air rushing sound when at idle as well at when driving. It seems to be a bit louder when the engine is cold but I could also be crazy about that.
View 3 RepliesThis is is a truck I hardly know anything about. My wife bought it while I was deployed for herself and when it comes to vehicles she's an idiot. No, really she told me she bought it because at horse shows everyone else has one.
I noticed an oil leak and had a reputable shop look at it. They told me it was coming from some seals on the turbo. Long story short there is a brand new turbo on there, stock replacement. Now it seems very under powered and shifts hard. Pressing down anything more than 25% throttle will cause hard shifting or no shifting at all. It'll stay in second until I ease off the throttle.
I tried searching a few terms but I'm not sure what to look for. I don't know if someone has messed with the tuning. Broken clamp on the turbo. Replaced and everything is back to normal...
Today I drove to dinner in my 2012 6.7 with no problems then on the way home my brother said he noticed my truck was white smoking quite a bit and he said there was a very strong exhaust smell coming from my truck ( he was in his car behind me) I ran a diagnostic test and what came up was code P0401 (I believe that's right). Need to figure out what is going on with my truck before I take it to the mechanics and get charged up. The truck still has DPFs in it just has a DPF back exhaust and has a AFE cold air intake running on a stock tune. However I do have the DPF deletes and EGR delete sitting in my garage just haven't gotten them on the truck yet.
View 2 RepliesStarted smelling exhaust in the cab while idling, and at startup. After further investigating found out the EGR inlet tube is leaking at the flex joint. So my question is , is there anything that will jump at me while I'm doing this tube replacement.
View 3 RepliesI've been smelling coolant for a few weeks with no apparent leak. Walk out today, small puddle under truck. Coolant running/drip along seam of engine and trans right in front of downpipe on passenger side. Even with a mirror I can't see up far enough. Looking from top is impossible. What could be leaking up there? Turbo?
View 4 RepliesJust happened today right after I bought diesel. thought it may be water in fuel but after researching wondering if it is injector, etc. It starts every time knocks real bad sometimes for a minute, but clears up to idle ok. During idle no smoke, slightest acceleration however produces white smoke harder I accelerate more it plumes and it smells like diesel in the air.
Cannot get past 15 or so mph till switching into 2nd gear then 25mph max. Had to drive 4 miles like this I can say it cleared up and drove 1/2 mile until I had to stop at a traffic light then going from idle to acceleration again ran bad rest of way home another 2 miles.
A few years ago I did have a rough idle and accel. similar and it ended up being the broke pick-up/sending unit in tank (but of course that was when you get to around 1/4 tank of fuel and didn't run bad above that much fuel in tank), plus there was almost or more than a gallon of water in tank. I have done the mod for the fuel pickup with hoses, filter canister, etc. but wondered at first today if I had gotten bad gas or water in the tank again. Not sure how that much water got in the tank to begin with but that was bout 5 or 6 years ago.
Truck has over 200k miles and Ive had it for 11 years. In the morning will check the ICP sensor by unplugging look at fuel filter bowl, etc. A question I have is: Is water heavier than diesel, would it run thru my line first? thinking diesel is heavier than gas because of oil content....
I've thought I smelt diesel fuel on an off for a while, but never found the source.
Tonight, 17 degrees out I have fuel in the valley and it appears as if the back of the drain valve is wet.
A fuel bowl rebuild is on the short list. Is this typical, the cold weather brings the issue to light?
I have noticed a refrigerant oil smell coming out of the A/C vents when I first start my truck with the a/c on.. smells like the PAG oil in the A/C system.. I got under the truck and stuck my finger in the condensate drain and it's oily, and has the same smell.. the A/C is still blowing cold, but the smell is getting worse..

View 2 RepliesI own a e1999 Ford F350 7.3 4x4 with a Garrett GTP38R turbo. I have been having issues with very little power and pulled an CEL of P0221. I know it's for the APS and have been trying to trouble shoot it as a new APS has not fixed the problem. However, while working on that I just noticed an oil leak appear. I tracked it down and can visibly see it leaking out the top of the passenger side exhaust manifold in two places. It is seeping out the top. Is oil supposed to even be running through here like that?
I recently replaced my up pipes with the newer style bellowed ones. While I had the turbo off I replaced all the o-rings top and bottom and did the EBPV delete on the pedestal. I have been having very little power and cannot the truck over 5-10 MPH and stays at low RPM's so I originally thought it was the leaky up pipes. Those were fixed along with fuel pressure checks which came back good. I then pulled the P0221 code finally. While I had the turbo off I inspected it and it did spin freely and had no side to side play in it.
What was unusual to me was there was a small pooling of oil in the turbo when I took it off. I know the CCV goes through here so some oil is normal. Also, when I was diagnosing the up pipe leak I could see a small amount of oil spraying out the blown donut gasket along with the exhaust gases. I don't think that is normal.
Is there an internal seal in the turbo that can go bad causing oil to spill into my exhaust and possibly leak at the exhaust manifold? Or do I have an internal oil leak from somewhere else?
I have a leak between the turbo and the exhaust manifold. The golden clamp (c-clamp? v-clamp?) broke, and now there is a gap between the two. The dealership doesnt cover it under powertrain warranty (my car has passed regular warranty) but worst of all they do not sell the clamp on its own.

Took the torque converter cover off and this is what I see. Before I took it off the cover looked oily. Prev I replaced the EGR valve and some other sensors and there was oil on top of the engine. Does this look like a rear main seal or oil dripping from the top of the engine?
