Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Coolant Leak From Behind Timing Cover?

Apr 14, 2017

I have a coolant leak from behind my timing cover found while doing a coolant system pressure test. I do not want to remove the engine. Looking for info on successful cover install with the engine still in the truck?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Pulling Engine To Redo Timing Cover

So I'm getting ready to pull my engine to redo my timing cover.. my engine has over 320000 miles on it and it runs strong, dyno'd 402 hp at the wheels recently.. I was considering dropping a reman in since im pulling the engine anyway... I heard you can test for blow by buy sitting your oil cap over the spout and seeing if the cap blows off.. well the engine tilts downward in the back so the cap just slides off but in the dark when i shine a flashlight you can see the fumes just billowing out... how do i know if this is too much... what else can i do EASILY to see if my engine has issues before i start taring it down?

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Coolant Leak From Timing Chain Cover Gasket?

I have 2000 V6 3.0 Ranger and it has sprung a small coolant leak from timing chain cover gasket. I think just few drips after driving a while since I don't see significant drop in coolant level (Took a month to notice level dropped in reservoir) and did not see an active leak while idling. No water in the oil.

The proper repair would be to replace the gasket, but for the age and condition of the truck, I don't think it is worth it. Searching for a cheaper solution, I found K-Seal and see lots of reviews with success. Will it damage the cooling system in anyway? I think it would be worth a try even if it doesn't fix the leak as long as it does not cause any harm.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Severe Coolant Leak - Seal Lost Behind The Pump On Timing Cover

I have an '04 Ranger Edge 3.0 with a severe coolant leak. It appears to be coming from the area where the head/water pump housing meet. I have been told I've lost the seal behind the pump on the timing cover. Is there any way to know for sure? Will I be able to tell, once the pump is out that it isn't coming from the head side? Are there any "special" instructions for re-sealing after replacing pump?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Severe Oil Leak And Coolant Disappearing

I was searching for an oil leak forever. In my search for the leak I resealed my hpop, redid oilcooler rings and last week had a friend pull my motor to redo the pan gasket. The leaks were almost down to where I thought we had them beat. Now in the last couple days I'm losing coolant and oil....bad. there is oil on the ground mostly from the cross member. Question is did my oil cooler fix not take? I have read that a nicked of ring can cause this.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Coolant Leak On Passenger Side

2003 7.3 175,000 miles...

Saw a stain in my driveway where you normally see AC drip. Opened hood and saw degas empty.

Looking around like crazy and find wet area. Where the coolant line turns down beside the passenger fender.

Looks wet near bend going toward running board. Didn't get to inspect much but I pulled back a bit of loom to inspect shape of lines and they look great.

What could be going on?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Persistent Coolant Leak At The Thermostat Outlet

The truck has been a dream for several months and I had a coolant leak at the thermostat outlet. Changed the fitting and thermostat and sealed with lots of blue monkey snot. It's been perfect for a couple months but a week ago it started leaking again. Exactly the same as last time. I cleaned the mating surface of the water pump with a plastic scraper to remove the old sealer and then finished it with fine scotch brite. I looked at several parts breakdowns and none of them showed a gasket.......

Ford - Explorer :: 2003 - Valve Cover Oil Leak / Timing Chain Rattling

My 2003' Explorer XLT (4.0L V6) has an oil leak. I tracked it down to the passenger side, rear, bolt head on the valve cover (back by firewall). I took it to a guy who replaced the valve cover gaskets, but it is still leaking. He claimed when he had the cover off he looked for any cracks on it, but did not see any at the time.

Anyways, I was searching around and found several explorers leaking in or around the same area of the valve cover. And it turned out that there issue stemmed from bad timing chain guides, causing the valve cover to crack.

I do notice that on a cold start, I hear a rattling when I first start it up. It rattles for maybe that first 1-2 seconds when starting. Is this my timing chain rattling around? If that is the case, how much this could set a guy back on repairs?

I guess I don't know whether to just replace the valve cover, or if I should dig into it to see if the real issue is the timing chain guides/tensioner. Mileage is approximately 121,000....

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Serpentine Belt Started Squealing - Coolant Leak Behind / Below Thermostat Housing

My serp belt started squealing so I pulled the thermostat housing to inspect the rubber gasket. It looked OK, but I cleaned up both surfaces and replaced with a new gasket, and put it back together. The housing was replaced just a couple months ago along with new hoses. It was not corroded and OK to reuse.

Started the truck up and saw a slowish/steady drip of red Cat ELC dripping on the driveway. Opened the hood up again and carefully inspected around the thermostat housing - no coolant is leaking there.

I did notice the same slow/steady drip coming from just behind and beneath the thermostat housing. See in pic, this is where it is dripping. One other question, what is this plug for on the side of the water pump?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Coolant Leak / Dripping Down Onto Passenger Side Front Leaf Spring

2003 F250 7.3... I noticed a water leak dripping down onto passenger side front leaf spring. I saw this before but attributed it to the AC (which kicks butt) but haven't used the AC. No scent to the clear fluid, temps all look good. Running fine. Where does the AC discharge go? Could AC be on (not on AC but set in blue zone on dial)? Reservoir looks ok but could e small volume of drips.

Engines - Chevrolet - Lumina :: 1999 - Leak On Timing Chain Cover / Smoke On Passenger Side

OK... I know next to nothing about cars. I have a '99 Chevy Lumina I just bought in February. It has been one problem after another. The water pump has been changed and I just got my car back on Monday because there was a leak on the timing chain cover. Now, the car is smoking on the passenger side. Its not a light smoke, but its not heavy yet. I noticed it on the way to work this morning. I opened the hood, it is coming from the left side (looking at it, so the passenger side) of the engine maybe kinda underneath it. I dunno what to do, but I'm ready to push that thing into a lake.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Timing Chain Cover Leak

My truck has had this annoying tendency to drink coolant. I believe I took care of it by replacing the thermostat gasket. Not so, it drinks about a quart every 50 miles - so quite a bit really.

Finally bit the bullet and took it to the dealer so that they could figure out where the coolant was going.

Answer I got back was - timing cover gasket, water pump, lower radiator hose.

The water pump appears to be good, its just the gasket that's bad. So my question is - how significant is the timing chain cover leak? Poking around online it appears to be reasonably common, but sounds very expensive. The dealer indicated it would be 2 days work minimum.

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2003 - Coolant Leak Slowly While Not Running And Quickly When Driving

My 2003 6.0 has a coolant leak. It leaks slowly while not running and more quickly while running. I have about an 8 mile drive to work every day, I can make it there and back without having to add coolant but I'm cutting it pretty close by the time I get home. In short I go from the max fill line to bone dry in about 24 hours.

With the truck running I can see water getting slung around all over the front of the engine but the majority of it seems to be coming from around the two larger pulleys in the middle. I've read that this can either be the crankshaft seal or the water pump, any way to know for sure? Any other possibilities?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Removing HPOP Reservoir Cover?

I need to get the HPOP reservoir top cover off so I can drill/tap a gauge probe into it.

I see torque-head bolts, and a few long bolts that go all the way down into the HPOP.

Unfortunately I cannot get two of the torque-head bolts out because they only un-thread several rotations before the heads of the bolts hit the edge of the fuel filter canister/bowl.

Any tips or tricks?

Ford - Taurus :: Serpentine Belt Squeak Due To Contamination / Timing Cover Leak

My serp belt squeaks due to contamination due to timing cover leak. I removed belt and cleaned it with mild degreaser solution and it was quiet for 1 day. If I had 100% water in cooling system, would any more leakage cause a belt squeak? I am putting off fixing timing cover gasket since it is a 5hr job. Coolant is @ 90% water concentration now.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Oil Dipstick Bolt Stuck On Valve Cover

The bolt that holds the dipstick on the valve cover. i have tried for ever to get this thing off. soaked it , got a skinny wrench on the nut underneath but think it might be stripped (1/2 inch grinded out a little). going to try and get a set of skinny wrenches tomorrow , mine bent. tried vise grips on top of the bolt and put a box wrench on the nut , and gave it my all. The damn thing won't budge.

Also, any tips on the rest of the valve cover bolts. I had to remove some from inside the fender well but barely got to them. My question is not getting these out but getting them back in. And how the heck to you torque these things??? The bolt i mentioned above is creating problem, and I only have so much time

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Oil Temp Drops Like Rock On Decel Timing Effect?

Well I just completed a complete refresh of the fuel system. New injectors, IDM , UVC and UVCH, and glow plugs. (All Ford Parts)

I had my AE software running on the last drive and noticed the oil temp is quite erratic. The odd thing was, when I left off the pedal, it would drop 100 degrees. Once I got back into the fuel, the temp came right back up where I thought it should be (140-160) puling a 7000# Enclosed 8.5wide car trailer, in 30 degree weather.

The truck ran OK but seemed down slightly on power. I know the oil temp affects SOI timing, but what degree and how often does it sample, to make timing changes? I found a new one at an Oreillys and put it in, but no change. Wires do not seem to change OHM reading when wiggling them.

I will post pics from recording as soon as my kid brings my laptop back.

Escort :: 1997 - Coolant Dripping Under Timing Cover

Recently the timing belt went on my '97 Escort. It had been dripping coolant from somewhere under the timing cover so I bought the timing belt/water pump kit thinking that this would solve the two problems. It only solved one. I'm still dripping coolant from somewhere under the timing cover.

Are there any freeze plugs or things that would leak under the cover? When I had it all apart, there were no visible leaks at least on the upper end that I could see easily.
