Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Injector Cup Causing High Pressure Oil Leak

Jan 22, 2017

I just replaced my injector cups a month or so ago and also injectors with some lower mile injectors. but now 3 weeks later still not getting any pressure at icp. I have dead headed pump got 3k plus but when i block off ether head i get no pressure. i have pulled injectors and checked for orings and they are fine...

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Injector 5 High - Low Error After New IDM

Story starts when I was cruising down the freeway and the truck cut out, seemed like a CPS or Injector related issue - seemed like a whole cylinder bank cut out. Stopped truck on shoulder, she shuttered and died. Turned truck off and restarted, ran like a top for about 4 miles then did the same again. I restarted it again and drive it straight home, ran like it I usually did.

As soon as I arrived home I did a little research and learned to start with CPS. I replaced my grey CPS with a new, Ford grey CPS. Truck fired up, ran the same that it did before - not the best idle but at 302k I was content. Drove it for a few days and it did it again, hobbled the truck home, although it did do it a few times and the last time it did it was really hard to start.

I replaced the IDM through NAPA. She's a work truck so I wasn't going to splurge for a Swamp Unit, the NAPA one came with an 18-Month Warrenty. She started right up afterward, the smoothest idle I had ever felt and she ran great, except for an SES. I ran the code and it was an IDM code, ran a buzz test and it pulled injector #5 high/low error, but it buzzed (a bit quieter than the others).

Here's the weirdest part, when the motor is cold the SES is constant, but as it warms up it only shows under power and sometimes flashes off at certain RPMs (1700-1900 and 2100-2300) and turns off when engine braking (TC locked) returns at idle. NO engine lights with the old IDM. I've checked the wiring to the injector from the 42-pin to the outer connector. (.6-.7 ohms, what my meter reads without any loads) Injector (from outer connector) reads 3.2 ohms. UVCH is less then 2 months old (GP issues) injectors have less than 5k on them.

Why? New injector solenoid? Bad IDM? Is it possible my last one never fired #5 and it got stuck? Or did my old IDM fry #5? Also I'm going to keep driving it and maybe it'll clear up, there was one drive I took where it cleared up completely. I've done some extensive research on this an i'm stumped. With the new IDM the truck has run better then it ever has.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Code P1271 - #1 Injector High - Low Side Open

Getting DTC Code P1271 - #1 Injector High -> Low Side Open.

The code tends to show up more during cold weather start up. Using AE-AutoEngenuity KOEO - Buzz Test returns the P1271 error

Troubleshooting performed:
- 42-Pin Connector @ Driver Side Valve Cover
- 9-pin VCH on Passenger side
- IDM Module under driver side wheel well
- All of these are testing within the 2.8 - 3.2 Ohm range
- (Used the GB Reman. Tech Bulletin 103) - TB 103: 1994-03 Ford 7.3L IDM Replacement & Diagnostics)

I was going to replace the solenoid, however, with the above readings I'm not convinced it's the solenoid. Before I tear into the valve covers I was looking for some add'l thoughts from the forum. Could it be the IDM ?....

Any add'l checks to perform using AE, or the IDM, other than replacing IDM.

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: 2003 - Weak HPOP / High Pressure Oil Leak?

My 03' 6.0l hpop only makes about 1700 psi at wot, at hot idle the ipr is 25.1 and the icp is about 580. It runs pretty good but it seems the crank time to start is getting a little longer sometimes, other times it fires right up. It makes no difference if its hot or cold. Do pumps get weak or do you think I have a leak?....

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 1271 Injector Code - High Side To Low Side Open Cylinder 1

I've got a 1271 code and I can't seem to make it go away. Code definition is "High side to Low side open Cyl 1". The truck runs fine, no rough idle, no excessive smoke of any color, just the damn CEL light stays on. I check the UVCH and all the injectors ohm in at 2.7 ohms. I've already done the updated clips under the covers. I run all the buzz tests and KOEO/ KOER tests and all appears OK. My AE won't do a Cyl contribution test. All the injector data shows all 0.00. I know its not that perfect. "high to low open", does that mean I've lost a ground? If so where?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: High LPOP Pressure - 75 PSI With A Warm Engine

I noticed this evening that my low pressure oil pressure was much higher than normal. I have a LPOP gauge that typically reads 12 psi or so at idle This evening I was seeing 75psi with a warm engine. Every little acceleration pegged the gauge over 100psi.

The factory non-functioning gauge says that everything is normal.

I am about due for an oil change. I was thinking that I would change the oil and filter as soon as possible and temporarily plumb in my mechanical gauge to see if the high pressure reading is real or not. I replaced the stock LPOP about 3 years ago with a melling and everything has been golden up until now.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Testing High Pressure Oil System / Air Coming Out Of CCV

'99 7.3, 258k miles, looses oil fast, oil found in coolant (though not a lot) and the fuel bowl is full of oil.

I re-ringed the oil cooler. Most of the coolant and oil is drained. The HPOP holds its oil level and does not leak down.

Someone shared the below test. Though it says #4 ORB, the actual thread on my IPR is #8. I removed the IPR and threaded in the #8ORB to air hose adapter. I regulated the pressure to 20 psi. The air is rushing out of the CCV.

I suspect I am missing something in the below test and that I'm pushing air back through the low pressure oil pump and into the crank case.

The test shared with me elsewhere:

Apparently someone named "Cody" on the forum did a test and it was labeled that way.

AIR TESTING THE HPO SYSTEM:

7.3L Powerstroke engines may experience hard start and or no start issues. In some cases the no-start issue may occur only with the engine hot. If the observed ICP pressure during cranking is less than the required 500 PSI, then the problem is in the high pressure oil system.

One of the first checks that should be made is to remove the plug from the top of the high pressure oil reservoir (in front of the fuel filter) to observe if the reservoir is full. If the oil is standing within an inch of the top of the reservoir, then the problem is in the high pressure oil system and could be caused by one of three things:

- The high pressure oil pump itself
- The IPR Valve
- A high pressure oil leak

Tools: Adaptor ORB #4, Air Compressor capable of maintaining 90-100 psig, Air Line Adaptors which will allow connection to the #4 OBR , IPR Test Harness, Grease Gun Whip or any whip with a .0625" NPT.

Remove the IPR valve and insert the ORB #4 Adaptor. Attach Shop Air and pressurize the system. Wait for approximately 30 - 60 Seconds while the air travels throughout the HPO System. Listen for air escaping through the Oil Fill Tube (cap removed).

External high pressure oil leaks would have, of course, been obvious. The primary concern is internal leaks under the valve cover(s). These could include leaking injector O-rings, or leaking injectors. Listen for any air escaping under the valve covers and correct if present.

If the center injector O-ring has failed, high pressure oil may be forced into the fuel system. Remove the fuel filter cap and observe for air bubbles in the fuel. If necessary, individual fuel lines running from the fuel filter assembly to the cylinder heads can be disconnected in order to isolate the problem to which side it is occurring.

2. 7.3L: If no air leaks are observed, the next step is to isolate whether the problem is with the IPR or the high pressure oil pump. Remove the IDM fuse or unplug the IDM or injector connectors at the valve covers to prevent starting.

3. If this test does not assist in diagnosing the issue, remove both valve covers and witness oil from the deflectors as being uniform, look closely at the injector base for any sign of air or oil escaping during test. This is an indication of a loose injector or O-Ring failure.

The same can be done at the ICP Ports (Oil Rail) on either side to determine leaking O-Rings in that Bank.

I have a High pressure oil leak somewhere, and where it can be. I tore the oil rails out and replaced the nipple cup seals last night. I got it all back together and air tested it and sure enough a leak is present. I have no problem paying for your time (I always provide good beer). I can rebuild gas motors all day long, but these diesels has me thrown for a loop. The frustration I am experiencing is crazy at this point. All the injectors are new, and the dummy plugs and standpipes were replaced as well.

Ford 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel :: Hydroboost High-pressure Line Coupling Leak - Replaced ORing?

I've been watching fluid build up on what I think is the hi-pressure line on the hydroboost. It appears to be originating at the coupling in the line because it is dry back at the unit.

Is there an o-ring or nylon washer in this fitting?

Can it be tightened?

Does the o-ring or washer need to be replaced?

Is it a sign of something else, like a build up of pressure in the line that is too high?

I currently have zero problems or noise coming from the steering or brake system.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Coolant Seen While Injector Out?

Although not certain, I *thought* I saw coolant run into the front drivers side injector hole when the injector was out and I leaned on the radiator hose. I had knowledge t pull them and changing the orings who were initially concerned then not concerned after looking closer.

Either I made a mistake in what I thought I saw on my first experience with injectors, or there really is a problem that I didn't know enough about to address at the time. So I opened this thread to get more info and stop hijacking 67speeda's thread, found here: [URL] ....

As per recommendations, I will check my coolant bottle for any fuel, oil, residue, etc. I am also going to reach out to my buddies and see if they saw a problem with coolant, too, or they realized it wasn't coolant and I didn't take note of it ...

It was a REALLY LONG day and my ability to concentrate had begun to slip quickly (health issues), so it's possible I missed something there. So IF I saw coolant going into that cylinder with the injector removed, how bad would that be? I thought it came from pretty high up and ran down where the injector sits..

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2002 - Engine Lost Power - Injector Harness?

So after hitting a pothole, it would seem like half the engine lost power, after some searching around, i found that i would most likely be the harness inside the valve cover that has lost connection.

Its the right side, so i would need to take of the turbo pipe, and probably something else to get to it.

Since i'm doing this job, what to check out along the way? I want my 7.3 to be as reliable as possible.

I will probably ask some questions along the way, it can be a challenge sometimes to own a car that not many mechanics are familiar with, but as i have read online, this should be a very straight forward fix.

Can the harness be upgraded so it doesn't happen again? Its an 02

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: 2001 - Replacing Injector?

I have an 01 F-250 Powerstroke. It has been shaking terribly at around 1500 rpms and shutters while holding the brake and increasing engine speed. I took it to the dealer and they told me that my #1 injector is bad. I decided to check around a little bit. I found a diesel service dealer that has brand new injectors. (Not rebuilts). Anyway I would like to attempt to install this injector myself.

1. Which injector is #1? (I've done a lot of mechanic work but not a whole lot on engines.)

2. What do you do with the fuel and oil that get into the cylinder? Do you have to get it sucked out?

3. Anything else that is crucial? What do you have to torque the injector bolt to?
